feat(providers): add local lmstudio backend type (#3381) - #3755
Adds a locallmstudio backend type, so workers can advertise an LM Studio
server on the LAN.
Today lmstudio cannot be carried as openai=http://<lan>:1234, because in taOS openai means cloud OpenAI: it sits in CLOUD_TYPES, maps to CloudAPIAdapter,
and is outside NEEDS_API_BASE_TYPES, so litellm_config.py never passes its URL
as api_base. Routing a LAN server through that would demand an API key and drop
the base URL.
providers/__init__.py — added to ALL_TYPES (making it local, hence in NEEDS_API_BASE_TYPES and given an api_base) and BACKEND_TYPE_MAP["lmstudio"] = "openai" as the LiteLLM prefix
backend_adapters.py — keyless OpenAI-compatible local adapter, health-checks /v1/models
worker/agent.py — added to _PROBEABLE_TYPES
Tests — catalog, provider, adapter, litellm api_base, and a worker probe of lmstudio=http://127.0.0.1:1234

Summary
Backend registration and capabilities tinyagentos/providers/__init__.py, tinyagentos/scheduler/backend_catalog.py, tests/test_providers.py, tests/test_backend_catalog_lifecycle.py, changelog.d/3755-lmstudio-backend-type.md, tests/worker/test_agent_extra_backends.py
Adds lmstudio to the provider types and maps it to LiteLLM’s openai provider. The catalog assigns llm-chat and embedding capabilities. The extra-backend test uses iopaint as its invalid probed type.
Inference URL handling and model routing tinyagentos/providers/__init__.py, tinyagentos/litellm_config.py, tests/test_providers.py, tests/test_litellm_config.py
Adds idempotent /v1 handling for LM Studio URLs. LiteLLM model entries and embedding discovery use the computed inference URL.
Worker discovery and adapter health check tinyagentos/worker/agent.py, tinyagentos/backend_adapters.py, tests/test_worker.py, tests/test_backend_adapters.py
Adds the default probe endpoint and /v1/models health checks. The adapter returns model IDs and timing on success, or an error result on failure.

LM Studio serves an OpenAI-compatible API on :1234. Add a new
'lmstudio' backend type so workers can advertise LM Studio as a local
backend. The type is registered in the backend catalog with llm-chat
and embedding capabilities, maps to the openai LiteLLM prefix, and is
given an api_base so litellm_config routes to the LAN URL. A dedicated
adapter health-checks /v1/models, and the worker probe detects LM
Studio on localhost:1234.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Route a discovered LM Studio model ID instead of default.
With the test’s backend configuration, build_model_list creates openai/default. The gateway forwards default as the upstream model, even when /v1/models reports qwen2.5-7b-instruct. LM Studio’s OpenAI-compatible requests use the model identifier, so this default entry does not select the discovered model. Register a route for each discovered model, or resolve the default alias to a real model ID, and assert that ID in this test. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Add /v1 to the LM Studio inference base.
For a backend URL of http://localhost:1234, build_model_list retains that URL as api_base. The gateway’s openai path then requests /chat/completions, while LM Studio serves /v1/chat/completions. Chat requests therefore reach the wrong endpoint. Normalize the LM Studio inference base to include /v1; keep the worker’s /v1/models probe on the unversioned server URL. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

…type
Three review findings, each verified against current code.
1. api_base must carry /v1 for the lmstudio type. LiteLLM's openai provider
appends /chat/completions to whatever api_base it is given, so a bare
http://host:1234 produced POST /chat/completions. Measured against a live
LM Studio on 🔢 that path answers HTTP 200 with
{"error":"Unexpected endpoint or method. (POST /chat/completions)"} while
/v1/chat/completions is the real endpoint (400 "No models loaded" with
nothing resident). A bare base therefore failed *silently* -- a 200 the
gateway would treat as success -- rather than 404ing. The rule now lives
in one place, providers.inference_api_base, and is idempotent so a URL
that already ends in /v1 is untouched. The worker's probe URL stays
unversioned; it builds /v1/models itself.
2. lmstudio was missing from _PROBEABLE_TYPES, so
TAOS_EXTRA_BACKENDS=lmstudio=http://<lan>:1234 and manifest candidates
were rejected -- only the localhost:1234 default candidate worked, which
contradicts the PR description's claim that this was added. Added there
and to _OPENAI_MODELS_TYPES, which the design doc
(docs/design/cluster-speech-routing.md 6) requires for both: the type is
detected by /v1/models alone, exactly like llama-cpp/vllm, so it must
take part in the llama-swap duplicate suppression.
3. Changelog fragment renamed 3381- -> 3755- to match the documented
<pr-number>-<slug> pattern. The gate passed either way because its regex
is only \d+-, so this was convention, not enforcement.
Not changed: the upstream model name stays the "default" alias. That is the
repo-wide convention for every local backend (llama-cpp, vllm, exo, mlx) and
is what the taOS gateway serves clients under; making lmstudio alone resolve
to a discovered model id would diverge from all of them. Flagged on the PR
for review rather than changed unilaterally.
Tests: 124 passed (providers, litellm_config, backend_adapters,
backend_catalog_lifecycle) + 41 passed (worker).
Addressed three of the four findings in 134e11a; the fourth I left alone deliberately.
Fixed
_PROBEABLE_TYPES (worker/agent.py) - you were right, and the PR description was wrong: it claimed this was added, but lmstudio was never in the set. Only the localhost:1234 default candidate worked; TAOS_EXTRA_BACKENDS=lmstudio=http://<lan>:1234 and manifest candidates were rejected. Added there, and to _OPENAI_MODELS_TYPES as well - the design doc (docs/design/cluster-speech-routing.md section 6) requires both, since the type is detected by /v1/models alone and must take part in the llama-swap duplicate suppression.
/v1 on the inference base - confirmed against a live LM Studio on :1234:
POST /chat/completions -> HTTP 200{"error":"Unexpected endpoint or method. (POST /chat/completions)"}
POST /v1/chat/completions -> 400{"error":{"message":"No models loaded..."}}
So the bare base did not 404, it returned 200 with an error body - a failure the gateway would read as success. Fixed via a single rule, providers.inference_api_base, applied everywhere api_base is set in litellm_config (default, per-model cloud, and local-manifest entries). It is idempotent, so a URL already ending in /v1 is untouched. The worker's probe URL stays unversioned - it builds /v1/models itself.
Changelog fragment renamed 3381- -> 3755-lmstudio-backend-type.md. Worth noting the gate passed either way: its regex is only \d+-, so the name was never enforced - this is convention, not a failing check.
Not changed: the default upstream model name
Registering per-discovered-model routes would make lmstudio the only local backend that does so. default is the repo-wide convention for every local type (llama-cpp, llama-swap, vllm, exo, mlx) and is the alias taOS serves clients under, so changing it for this one type is a routing-contract decision rather than a bug fix in this PR's scope. Two things worth knowing before deciding:
LM Studio returns the same "No models loaded" error for model=default and for a deliberately nonexistent id, so the server does not appear to validate the field when nothing is resident. Settling it needs a model loaded, which I have not done here.
The gateway forwards upstream_model verbatim (forward.py), so whatever build_model_list emits is what LM Studio receives.
Happy to add per-model registration in a follow-up if you want that divergence; I would rather do it knowingly than as a side effect of this review.
tests/worker/test_agent_extra_backends.py listed lmstudio as a bad
TAOS_EXTRA_BACKENDS entry ("not in the catalog"). This PR adds lmstudio
to _PROBEABLE_TYPES, _OPENAI_MODELS_TYPES and _DEFAULT_PROBE_CANDIDATES,
so the entry is now valid and the assertion fails on shard 4.
Replace that case with iopaint, a catalog type that is still not probed,
so the bad-entry coverage is unchanged.
bot-review-gate is BLOCKED at the fork-PR verdict (EXIT_FORK_UNREVIEWED, exit 3). Needs a lead action, not a code change.
The only failing check on this PR is bot-review-gate. Its verdict is the fork path, not the CodeRabbit path:
FAIL: fork PR requires lead review (no maintainer approval on head sha, no lead-reviewed label) (exit 3)
This PR comes from a fork, and per the gate contract (scripts/check_bot_review.py) fork PRs receive no automated CodeRabbit review, so the bot verdict is ignored entirely. A fork PR clears the gate only when either:
a maintainer has an APPROVED review on the current head SHA (6ae67cf743c160f9496750d2a8df0c132e0456b9), or
the lead-reviewed label is applied.
Note: the bot-review-allow label does not clear this. It waives stub-shaped bot output, and a fork PR has no bot output to waive.
Secondary: the gate also fails to self-heal its own check run. On a fork PR the workflow's GITHUB_TOKEN is read-only, so its attempt to POST the check run returns 403 Forbidden, and the check stays FAILURE (mergeStateStatus stays BLOCKED rather than UNSTABLE).
Everything else is green on this head (30 pass / 3 skip). Could a maintainer apply lead-reviewed, or approve on 6ae67cf743c1?
This is the same single blocker as the rest of the set: #3237, #3337, #3351.
Lead review on head 6ae67cf. The three fixes from 134e11a are all on this head and read correctly: inference_api_base is idempotent and applied at all three api_base sites, lmstudio is in both _PROBEABLE_TYPES and _OPENAI_MODELS_TYPES, fragment renamed. Thanks for measuring the 200-with-error-body case, that was the important one.
One thing left before I label it lead-reviewed: the default upstream name. I agree that changing the routing contract for one type is out of scope. But whether this backend works at all depends on it, so it needs a measurement, not a deferral. With a model actually loaded in LM Studio, please run:
POST /v1/chat/completions with "model": "default"
the same request with the loaded model's real id
and paste both status codes and the first line of each body here. If LM Studio serves default (it routes to the single loaded model), this merges as is. If it 400s/404s, then every chat routed through this backend fails while the worker advertises it as healthy, which is a bug in this PR. In that case the smallest fix is to emit the discovered model ids for lmstudio (the health adapter already returns them), with a test.
The fork-gate point is noted: I apply lead-reviewed myself once that measurement is in. #3237/#3337/#3351 are in my queue next.
Measurement: does LM Studio serve model: "default"? Yes, it does — 200 OK, routed to the single loaded model. So no code change is needed and this merges as is.
LM Studio version: not obtainable over HTTP.GET /api/v1/health, /api/v1/system, /api/v1/info, /lmstudio, /api/v0/version are all 404 (or return the generic {"error":"Unexpected endpoint or method..."} body), and neither /api/v1/models nor /v1/models carries a version field or a version response header. The v1 REST surface that is present (POST /api/v1/models/load taking model; GET /api/v1/models reporting loaded_instances[].config.speculative_draft_mtp) is the current-generation API, but I cannot put a number on it.
Nothing was loaded when I arrived: every entry in /api/v1/models reported "loaded_instances": []. I loaded exactly one small model, via the REST load endpoint:
Loaded model id (exact): qwen_qwen3.5-4b (Q8_0, 4B). loaded_instances[0].id, the /v1/models id, and the model field in the completion response are all the identical string qwen_qwen3.5-4b.
Both bodies carry "completion_tokens_details": {"reasoning_tokens": 5} with "finish_reason": "length", i.e. the 5-token budget was spent inside the model's reasoning block before any content was emitted. That is a property of qwen_qwen3.5-4b (a reasoning model) and the tiny max_tokens, not of either model name. The request was accepted and served in both cases.
I repeated the default request twice more afterwards to check determinism:
default works: LM Studio routes it to the single loaded model, exactly as you described. No 400, no 404, at any of the 3 attempts. Therefore I am not changing any code: emitting the discovered model ids for lmstudio would alter the shared default routing contract that build_model_list uses for every local backend (model_name = backend.get("model", "default") -> openai/default against the backend's api_base), and you already ruled that out of scope.
No code, test, or changelog changes in this round; the branch head is unchanged at 6ae67cf743c160f9496750d2a8df0c132e0456b9.
Lead review of head 6ae67cf (branch now updated onto current dev, CI re-running): code reads correct. lmstudio is registered consistently across ALL_TYPES, BACKEND_TYPE_MAP, catalog capabilities, the worker probe candidates and _OPENAI_MODELS_TYPES, and inference_api_base keeps the probe URL unversioned while api_base carries /v1, matching the live measurement. Two non-blocking notes: (1) the LMStudioAdapter docstring has an em dash ("directly — a 200"), please swap it for a colon; (2) inference_api_base now rstrips "/" for every backend type and turns a None url into "" in build_model_list, a small behaviour change for all types, fine as long as it is intended. Merge after green CI on the updated head plus a CodeRabbit pass on it.

Normalize an already-versioned LM Studio URL.
When LMStudioAdapter.health receives a URL ending in /v1, it can request /v1/v1/models and report the server as unavailable. inference_api_base already accepts this URL form. Remove the existing /v1 suffix before constructing the health-check path.

Lead adjudication of the CodeRabbit pass on 6b9c5c8:
backend_adapters.py:191, /v1 suffix in LMStudioAdapter.health: valid, please fix before merge. Controller-configured backends reach health(url) with the stored URL as-is (the worker path strips to origin, the catalog/config path does not). inference_api_base is deliberately idempotent for a .../v1 URL, and http://host:1234/v1 is the form LM Studio itself shows users, so a working server entered that way would probe /v1/v1/models and show as down while inference works. Strip a trailing /v1 before building the probe path (e.g. base = url.rstrip("/").removesuffix("/v1")), plus one test with a /v1 URL that fails before the change.
backend_catalog.py:44, embedding capability without an LM Studio embedding route: non-blocking for this PR.llama-cpp and openai already advertise embedding with no discovery route in litellm_config.py, so lmstudio follows the existing pattern. I will card the whole class as a follow-up rather than fix one type here.
The em dash in the LMStudioAdapter docstring ("directly — a 200") is still there; please swap it for a colon in the same push.

One more integration point for the same push, now that #3876 is on dev: build_model_list registers lmstudio embedding routes with "api_base": url (litellm_config.py, the llama-cpp/lmstudio discovery branch), so after this PR lands an LM Studio embedding call would go to /embeddings instead of /v1/embeddings. When you merge dev in, please route that branch through inference_api_base(backend_type, url) like the chat entry, with one test that a bare http://host:1234 lmstudio backend gets an embedding api_base ending in /v1. Still owed from the 10-21 adjudication: the health() trailing-/v1 strip with its failing-first test, and the docstring em dash.
Lead review items on jaylfc#3755:
- LMStudioAdapter.health strips a trailing /v1, so the URL form LM Studio
shows users no longer probes /v1/v1/models and reads as down.
- Embedding routes go through inference_api_base, so a bare
http://host:1234 reaches /v1/embeddings.
- Docstring em dash replaced with a colon.
Also fixes the discovery those routes depend on. Live LM Studio answers
GET /models with HTTP 200 and {"error":"Unexpected endpoint or method"},
so probing a bare URL found no models and no embedding route was ever
registered. Both discovery paths now probe through inference_api_base;
the result stays keyed by the configured URL.

Skip LM Studio backends with an empty URL instead of emitting a route.
build_model_list emits a route for an LM Studio backend with an empty url. The route gets api_base/v1, which is a relative path and cannot reach a server. This predates the change: the base already set api_base to an empty string for the same input. The change only alters that value. The empty-URL check at line 269 only logs a warning for cloud types.

Review comment at @tinyagentos/providers/__init__.py around lines 85 - 86:
Update build_model_list to skip LM Studio backends whose url is empty, rather
than passing the empty base through suffix handling and emitting a route.
Preserve existing behavior for backends with a configured URL and for other
backend types.
The mock_get helper returns the 200 response for any URL that contains 1234, so the test does not check the path. The assertions check the backend count, URL, name, and capabilities, but not the requested probe URL. A change that probes http://localhost:1234/models instead of /v1/models would still pass this test. Asserting the requested URL closes that gap.

Update the LM Studio test using mock_get to assert that the mocked HTTP client
was called with the exact probe URL http://localhost:1234/v1/models; keep the
existing backend assertions intact.

LMStudioAdapter.health strips a trailing /v1, with a failing-first test on both /v1 and /v1/.
The embedding routes in build_model_list go through inference_api_base, with a test that a bare http://host:1234 gets an api_base ending in /v1.
The docstring em dash is now a colon.
One addition you didn't ask for. Item 2 alone would never have fired, because the discovery probe had the same problem. Live LM Studio answers GET /models with HTTP 200 and {"error":"Unexpected endpoint or method. (GET /models)"}, so a bare URL discovered no models and registered no embedding route. Both discovery paths now probe through inference_api_base, and the result stays keyed by the configured URL. I also rewrote test_lmstudio_not_in_all_types_no_embedding_discovery to remove lmstudio from ALL_TYPES itself, since this PR makes it a real type.
Checked against a live LM Studio on the rig: discovery found 52 models and health returned ok, for both http://host:1234 and http://host:1234/v1. I did not run a live embedding call.
CI is green except bot-review-gate, the fork path that needs your review or lead-reviewed. Per your 10-21 note it still needs a CodeRabbit pass on this head.

Authenticate probes for token-protected LM Studio servers.
If LM Studio requires an API token, this request has no Authorization header and reports a working configured backend as unavailable. The provider route cannot recover: its authenticated model-list retry applies only to cloud types after a successful health check. The worker’s LM Studio model probe is also keyless, so it drops a token-protected LAN server. Pass resolved credentials through these probe paths before treating the server as down. LM Studio requires a token on requests when authentication is enabled. (lmstudio.ai)

Update the LM Studio probe request in the backend adapter and the worker’s LM
Studio model probe to include the resolved API token in the Authorization header
when configured, while preserving keyless requests when no token is set. Use
these authenticated probes before marking the backend unavailable.

Not valid on this head, no change needed:
Changelog fragment name: it is already changelog.d/3755-lmstudio-backend-type.md.
lmstudio missing from _PROBEABLE_TYPES: it is there (worker/agent.py:207), so TAOS_EXTRA_BACKENDS=lmstudio=... parses.
Missing /v1 on the inference base: inference_api_base() adds it, and test_lmstudio_uses_openai_prefix pins .../1234/v1.
No embedding route: the llama-cpp/lmstudio branch in build_model_list registers the discovered embedding models and the taos-embedding-default alias.
Open, one question for you:
The chat entry is openai/default. Does LM Studio answer model: "default" with the loaded model, or does it need a real model id (e.g. with JIT loading on, or with two models loaded)? You measured the /v1 behaviour live, so if you can run one POST /v1/chat/completions with "model": "default" against your LM Studio and paste the status and the first line of the reply, that settles it. If it refuses, please register a chat route per discovered model id (the same way the embedding loop does) and assert that id in the test.
Follow-up, not blocking this PR:
The health and model probes send no Authorization header, so an LM Studio with authentication enabled reads as down. LM Studio ships with auth off, so I will card this separately after merge.
The merge itself stays with Jay (needs-jay).

Closes #3381.
What
Adds a local
lmstudiobackend type, so workers can advertise an LM Studioserver on the LAN.
Today
lmstudiocannot be carried asopenai=http://<lan>:1234, because in taOSopenaimeans cloud OpenAI: it sits inCLOUD_TYPES, maps toCloudAPIAdapter, and is outside
NEEDS_API_BASE_TYPES, solitellm_config.pynever passes its URLas
api_base. Routing a LAN server through that would demand an API key and dropthe base URL.
Changes, following the issue's proposal:
scheduler/backend_catalog.py—BACKEND_CAPABILITIES["lmstudio"] = {"llm-chat", "embedding"}providers/__init__.py— added toALL_TYPES(making it local, hence inNEEDS_API_BASE_TYPESand given anapi_base) andBACKEND_TYPE_MAP["lmstudio"] = "openai"as the LiteLLM prefixbackend_adapters.py— keyless OpenAI-compatible local adapter, health-checks/v1/modelsworker/agent.py— added to_PROBEABLE_TYPESapi_base, and a worker probe oflmstudio=http://127.0.0.1:1234Tests
