Stacked on #3237: this branch is feat/mlx-serve, built on feat/mlx-installer
(head 98dd3c2, still open), because MLXInstaller only exists there. Until
#3237 merges, the diff below also shows its three commits; the reviewable delta
from this slice is the single commit on top, 7754c32. I have not pushed to or
reopened #3237, and I will rebase this onto dev (dropping the duplicated
commits) as soon as #3237 lands.

What this does

#3237 stopped reporting an MLX endpoint because nothing served one. This slice
ships the serving half, so install() can report an endpoint again — this time
only when it actually answers.

Design decision: one launchd agent pinning one model (not a per-model spawn)

mlx_lm.server has no router mode: one process serves exactly one model, and
--model takes that model's directory (no --models-dir analogue). Two shapes
were possible; this PR takes the second:

  1. LLM proxy spawns a server per model on demand. Rejected for this slice.
    llm_proxy.py manages the LiteLLM process and generates its config from a
    static backend list; per-model spawn means adding process lifecycle, a
    model→process map, lazy load/unload and unified-memory eviction to the proxy.
    That is a real piece of work, and it is not needed for the installer
    contract.
  2. A launchd agent pins a single model (this PR). It mirrors llama.cpp's
    managed unit, gives a service that survives re-login and crashes
    (RunAtLoad + KeepAlive), and lets the installer health-gate before
    reporting anything.

Consequences, stated plainly:

  • One MLX model is served at a time: the newest MLX install re-points the
    agent at its own model directory (last install wins). Serving several MLX
    models at once stays the proxy slice above.
  • An MLX install now loads the model into unified memory (that is what
    "managed service" means here, same as rkllamacpp_installer.py and
    ollama_installer.py). KeepAlive costs the resident model for as long as
    the agent is loaded.
  • Uninstalling the served model unloads the agent with it; otherwise launchd
    would relaunch a server against a directory that no longer exists, forever.

Pieces

  • scripts/install-mlx-server.sh (new): writes
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.taos.mlx-server.plist running
    <mlx-venv>/bin/mlx_lm.server --model <model dir> --host 127.0.0.1 --port 7837, launchctl bootout (stale agent) → bootstrap → enable →
    kickstart -k, then health-gates on GET /v1/models (90 s) and exits
    non-zero with the log path if nothing answers. It refuses a host that is not
    Apple Silicon + Metal (device probe, same anchored system_profiler match as
    install-worker.sh) and refuses to run without the pinned runtime venv. It
    owns the plist, so there is exactly one source of truth for the service.
    --uninstall --model <dir> removes the agent only when it pins that model.
  • tinyagentos/installers/mlx_installer.py: _serve_model() runs the script
    for the directory the downloader reported (validated to be inside the mlx
    backend root, the same boundary rule the download and delete already use) and
    re-probes with mlx_server_is_running() — the same function the setup
    checklist uses, so "the install reported an endpoint" and "the checklist sees
    a backend" cannot disagree. Only then does the result carry endpoint and
    runtime_location; otherwise it carries mlx_serving: false plus
    mlx_serving_error and the weights stay on disk. uninstall() unloads the
    agent as described above. mlx_server_is_running() gained an optional port
    (default unchanged: TAOS_MLX_PORT, else 7837).
  • tinyagentos/routes/setup.py: the Apple Silicon step (accel == "metal") is
    now satisfied by either local backend, llama.cpp (/health) or MLX
    (/v1/models), TTL-cached like the other probes, with the same shape as the
    rkllama/rk-llama.cpp pair. A Mac that installed only an MLX model no longer
    reads as "default backend not running". No request/response field changes;
    the route needs a Docs-Reviewed: [routes] trailer because it is a
    tinyagentos/routes/*.py modification.

One claim in the card corrected

The card (and #3237's module docstring) says mlx_lm.server has no /health.
Against the pinned wheel it does: mlx-lm==0.31.3 answers GET /health with
{"status": "ok"} and /v1/models. The probe stays on /v1/models
deliberately — that is the surface the mlx backend adapter and the OpenAI SDK
call, so a 200 there proves more than a liveness ping. Verified by unpacking
mlx_lm-0.31.3-py3-none-any.whl (mlx_lm/server.py: "/v1/completions",
"/v1/chat/completions", self.path.startswith("/v1/models"),
elif self.path == "/health"), and the console script mlx_lm.server = mlx_lm.server:main is what the plist's ProgramArguments invokes.

Review fixes folded on this branch

  • CodeRabbit (pass 1): the agent is pinned to the resolved model path
    (_contained()'s return value), so the plist and the later --uninstall
    argument name the same directory on a host whose models root is a symlink
    (/var -> /private/var on macOS, or a symlinked TAOS_MODELS_ROOT).
    Regression test installs and uninstalls through a symlinked root and asserts
    both commands carry the identical path.
  • CodeRabbit (pass 2): every value interpolated into the plist goes through
    xml_escape(), and --uninstall compares against the same escaped form, so a
    model directory such as Models & Data yields a plist launchd can load and
    can still be unloaded afterwards.
  • Kilo (pass 2): --uninstall now exits 3 when it deliberately leaves an
    agent running for a different model; _unload_agent() maps that to
    unloaded / left-running / failed, and uninstall() reports
    mlx_agent_state with mlx_agent_unloaded true only when the agent is
    actually gone (failures keep their message in mlx_agent_error).

Verification

Red-first against 98dd3c2 with only the new/changed test files copied in
(/tmp/red6e13030e, PYTHONPATH override):

  • tests/test_install_mlx_server.py — 18 tests, all fail pre-change (the
    shipped script does not exist yet: install-mlx-server.sh() not found).
  • tests/installers/test_mlx_installer.py::TestMLXServing — 8 tests,
    AttributeError: <class 'MLXInstaller'> does not have the attribute '_serve_model'; the install-level test also shows the pre-change result
    invoking the downloader and no serving command
    (assert 0 == 1 where 0 = len([])).
  • test_server_probe_follows_the_port_it_is_given —
    TypeError: mlx_server_is_running() got an unexpected keyword argument 'port'.
  • tests/test_routes_setup.py (2 new metal/cuda cases) —
    AttributeError: module 'tinyagentos.routes.setup' has no attribute '_mlx_probe_cache'.

Green on the branch (this host, PYTHONPATH=$(pwd) over the repo venv):

  • tests/test_install_mlx_server.py 18 passed.
  • tests/installers/test_mlx_installer.py 40 passed.
  • tests/test_routes_setup.py 45 passed (584 s — the file's per-test app
    setup dominates, not this change).
  • Wider focused gate (tests/installers/, test_hardware.py,
    test_scheduler_discovery.py, test_cluster_s2_24_fix.py,
    routes/test_store_install_v2.py, test_install_mlx_server.py,
    test_routes_a2a_gpu_lease.py, test_routes_setup.py) with -n 8:
    473 passed in 764 s (exit 0).

The launchd half is exercised on the (Linux) CI runner by extracting the
production shell functions from the shipped script, stubbing uname,
system_profiler, launchctl, curl and sleep as shell functions, and
pointing HOME at a throwaway directory — the same technique
tests/test_install_worker_macos.py uses. The plist is parsed with
xml.etree.ElementTree (plutil is macOS-only), including the
--model/--host/--port ProgramArguments, RunAtLoad/KeepAlive and the
log paths.

Refs #329 (the umbrella "per-backend installers" issue; other backends still
pending). Does not reopen #3237.

Follow-ups (deliberately not in this PR): per-model spawn + lazy load/unload in
llm_proxy.py if several MLX models must be servable at once; a Store
type: service manifest for the MLX server if a one-tap install is wanted
without a model (scripts/install-mlx-server.sh --model <dir> is already the
entry point for it).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added MLX model installation and serving on Apple Silicon. The runtime installs on demand, and models are served locally at http://127.0.0.1:7837/v1 after the server passes a health check. Only one model runs at a time; the newest installation takes precedence.
    • Added Metal GPU detection and resource reporting for Apple Silicon.
    • Setup checks recognize a running MLX server as a valid Apple Silicon backend.
  • Bug Fixes

    • GPU leases without a specified resource now resolve against the target worker’s available GPU. Releases no longer select an arbitrary lease when multiple matches exist.

A model install on the `mlx` backend used the generic download fallback:
the weights landed as opaque files the MLX runtime cannot load, and nothing
installed or checked the runtime itself. `_BACKEND_TO_METHOD["mlx"]` now
routes to a purpose-built MLXInstaller which:

- gates on Apple Silicon (darwin/arm64) and fails with a clear message
  elsewhere instead of "succeeding" with an unusable download;
- installs the `mlx-lm` runtime in the serving interpreter on demand
  (`TAOS_MLX_PYTHON` override) and only when it is genuinely missing;
- pulls the model into the shared layout at
  `~/models/mlx/<family>/<manifest_id>/` by delegating to the existing
  HFMultiInstaller (repo of safetensors + config + tokenizer) or
  DownloadInstaller (single file). Variant field `mlx_repo` wins over
  `hf_repo` so one variant can point MLX at a pre-quantised mlx-community
  repo while keeping its GGUF source for other backends;
- reports the OpenAI-compatible endpoint the `mlx` backend adapter talks to
  (port 7837, now reserved alongside 7833-7836).

Apple Silicon also gets its own scheduler resource name: discovery registers
`gpu-metal` (docs/design/resource-scheduler.md) rather than the CUDA-indexed
`gpu-cuda-0`, the worker advertises the same name so lease ids and worker
inventories agree, and the legacy worker-resource grammar accepts it. The A2A
GPU lease default (`routes/a2a_gpu_lease.py`) resolves from the target worker's
advertised inventory — falling back to this host's own probe only for a node
the cluster does not know — so a claim that names no resource still resolves on
a Mac worker, and an unnamed release finds the actor's single lease on the node
instead of an exact resource lookup an updated inventory would miss.

Docs-Reviewed: [routes] the store_install.py change is one dispatch-table
entry (mlx -> mlx) plus its comment; no route, request/response shape or
agent-facing surface changed, so docs/agent-coordination.md is untouched.
…fc#329)

Supply chain: the runtime no longer arrives from an unpinned
`pip install mlx-lm` in the controller's interpreter. mlx-lm and mlx are
pinned (MLX_LM_VERSION / MLX_VERSION), the whole closure ships as
hash-pinned locks (mlx_lm_requirements_py311|312|313.txt, regenerate with
scripts/gen-mlx-lock.py) and pip installs them with
`--require-hashes --only-binary=:all:` into a venv of its own
(<install root>/apps/mlx-runtime/venv, TAOS_MLX_VENV). A package whose
digest is not in the lock fails the install, and re-installing a model
cannot move the runtime under a running server.

Endpoint: install() reported http://127.0.0.1:7837 while nothing started
mlx_lm.server. One process serves one model, so the managed service belongs
to the backend-activation slice, not to a model install: the result now
reports the runtime interpreter and the pinned version instead of an
endpoint. 7837 stays reserved, and mlx_server_is_running() (a /v1/models
probe, mirroring llamacpp_is_running) is the health check that slice and
the setup checklist will use.

Metal detection: METAL_RESOURCE_NAME and metal_available() move from
installers/mlx_installer.py to hardware.py, so the worker and the scheduler
no longer pull the installers package in for a hardware fact, and
metal_available() probes the device (system_profiler's Metal Support line,
memoised, failing open only when the probe cannot run) instead of assuming
every arm64 macOS host has a GPU. An arm64 VM with no Metal device no
longer registers gpu-metal, or a GPU resource at all.

Docs and style: the module docstring, the README table and the changelog
fragment now say where the weights actually land
(<models root>/mlx/<family>/<id>, i.e. TAOS_MODELS_ROOT or the install
root's models/), and no added line carries an em dash.

Rebased onto current dev: jaylfc#3238 owns worker/agent.py's resources block,
which now feeds METAL_RESOURCE_NAME into _collect_resources, and this
branch drops its own resources hunk. Ports 7837 (ours) and 7838 (the LLM
gateway agent listener) are both reserved.

Red-first: against the pre-fix head, the "no endpoint" result assertions,
the own-venv/--require-hashes pip command and the Metal-less arm64 answers
all fail.

Docs-Reviewed: [routes] the route hunks are the mlx dispatch-table entry in
store_install.py (mlx -> mlx, commented in place) and the lease default's
import site in a2a_gpu_lease.py; no endpoint, request/response shape or
agent-facing surface changed, so docs/agent-coordination.md is untouched.
The installers rule is satisfied by the README.md edit in this same commit.
jaylfc#3238 landed `_collect_resources()` in worker/agent.py with the "gpu-metal"
literal; taOS jaylfc#329's review asked for the worker to feed
`METAL_RESOURCE_NAME` from hardware.py instead, so lease ids, worker
inventories and the controller's discovery cannot drift apart. The new test
covers the Mac case, the CUDA control and the Intel-Mac CPU fallback.

Refs jaylfc#329
CodeRabbit's only finding on the review head: `gen-mlx-lock.py` ran
`pip download` with no timeout, so a stalled index hangs lock regeneration
forever. Pass `timeout=1800` and turn `TimeoutExpired` into a one-line exit
instead of a traceback.

Re-ran the script end to end afterwards: it regenerated all three locks and
only `filelock` moved (4.0.7 -> 4.0.8, a transitive dep released since the
locks were written), which is left out of this commit so the vendored locks
stay reviewed as-is.

… endpoint

MLXInstaller now finishes the job it starts: after the weights land it pins
the model in a user launchd agent (scripts/install-mlx-server.sh writes
~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.taos.mlx-server.plist) running
<mlx-venv>/bin/mlx_lm.server --model <model dir> --host 127.0.0.1 --port 7837,
health-gates on GET /v1/models and only then reports endpoint /
runtime_location in the install result. An install whose server does not come
up keeps the downloaded weights, reports no endpoint at all and carries
mlx_serving_error, which is the rule the taOS jaylfc#329 lead review asked for: never
advertise a service nothing runs.

mlx_lm.server has no router mode (one process serves exactly one model), so the
shape here is a single-model launchd agent mirroring llama.cpp's unit: the
newest MLX install re-points the agent, and serving several MLX models at once
stays the LLM proxy's per-model-spawn slice. Uninstalling the served model
unloads the agent with it, since launchd's KeepAlive would otherwise relaunch a
server against a directory that no longer exists.

The setup checklist's Apple Silicon step accepts either local backend now:
accel == "metal" probes llama.cpp (/health) or the MLX server (/v1/models), so a
Mac that installed only an MLX model stops reading as "backend missing".

Tests: tests/test_install_mlx_server.py runs the shipped shell functions in a
simulated macOS host (stubbed host commands, throwaway $HOME) and validates the
plist with ElementTree, so the launchd half is covered on the Linux runner;
tests/installers/test_mlx_installer.py pins the endpoint contract, the
probe-driven health gate and the agent teardown on uninstall.

Docs-Reviewed: [routes] the setup checklist's metal step additionally accepts the MLX server; the route's request/response fields are unchanged

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds an MLX installer and per-user model server for Apple Silicon. It adds pinned runtime requirements and Metal capability detection. GPU discovery and lease selection use Metal resources, and setup checks recognize a running MLX server.

Changes: Apple Silicon MLX and Metal support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Metal discovery and GPU resource selection
tinyagentos/hardware.py, tinyagentos/scheduler/discovery.py, tinyagentos/worker/agent.py, tinyagentos/routes/a2a_gpu_lease.py, tests/test_hardware.py, tests/test_scheduler_discovery.py, tests/test_routes_a2a_gpu_lease.py, tests/test_cluster_s2_24_fix.py
Metal availability determines whether Apple Silicon GPU resources are registered as gpu-metal. GPU lease defaults use the target worker’s advertised GPU resource when available. Resource-unspecified releases select a lease only when exactly one actor-owned lease matches on the node.
MLX runtime and model installation
scripts/gen-mlx-lock.py, tinyagentos/installers/mlx_lm_requirements_*.txt, tinyagentos/installers/mlx_installer.py, tinyagentos/installers/base.py, tinyagentos/routes/store_install.py, tests/installers/test_mlx_installer.py, tests/routes/test_store_install_v2.py, changelog.d/tsk-17b59c19-mlx-installer.md
A lock generator and hash-pinned requirements support CPython 3.11–3.13 on macOS arm64. MLXInstaller provisions a separate runtime, validates model paths, and downloads repository or single-file models. Store installation requests route the mlx backend to MLXInstaller.
Launchd serving and health checks
scripts/install-mlx-server.sh, tinyagentos/installers/mlx_installer.py, tinyagentos/installers/port_allocator.py, tests/test_install_mlx_server.py, tests/installers/test_mlx_installer.py, tests/installers/test_port_allocator.py, README.md, changelog.d/tsk-6e13030e-mlx-serving.md
The installer script manages a per-user launchd agent and polls /v1/models for health. MLXInstaller reports an endpoint only after a successful probe and handles agent state during uninstall. Port 7837 is reserved.
Apple Silicon setup status
tinyagentos/routes/setup.py, tests/test_routes_setup.py
On Apple Silicon, setup status accepts either a running llama.cpp server or a running MLX server.

Loading
Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 2a766

The MLX serving changes appear mergeable after normal checks. Startup is health-gated, and uninstall distinguishes confirmed removal from failure; native macOS validation remains advisable.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 2a766

The default network exposure is narrow, but interrupted replacement and failed removal can leave persistent running state inconsistent with the requested configuration. Ownership and recovery guarantees need strengthening.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · architecture · inferred: Replacement overwrites the shared plist before stopping the existing service. Interruption between those steps can leave the plist naming a new model while the loaded process still belongs to the previous model; model-aware cleanup then uses the wrong ownership record. Failed readiness also leaves the replacement registered without restoring the previous service. This is a new persistent-state ownership and rollback risk, not merely the documented last-install-wins behavior.
  • Medium · reliability · observed: Uninstall removes the model directory before confirming service shutdown. If unloading fails, deletion remains successful while the persistent service is still registered or its state is unconfirmed. A retry returns immediately because the directory is absent and never retries service cleanup. The explicit unload-error fields prevent a false “unloaded” claim, but do not restore cleanup idempotency or contain the surviving KeepAlive service.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly evidenced scope is the invoking user’s host, selected model, persistent service label, and local endpoint. A direct operator-supplied non-loopback bind address can extend reachability to the attached network, but the normal installer does not supply that override. No cross-tenant, data-store, IAM, or elevated system authority expansion was established by the inspected path.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A bounded failure path is interruption after rewriting the plist for model B but before unloading model A. Cleanup of A can then interpret the plist as belonging to B and leave A’s loaded service untouched. This demonstrates a persistent ownership-reconciliation risk; it does not establish an unauthorized remote attack or verified dependency vulnerability.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Catalog-derived paths are checked before runtime provisioning, and downloader-reported paths are resolved and checked again before becoming persistent server arguments. Uninstall uses the same resolved backend-root containment boundary. These controls constrain model selection and recursive deletion, but do not reconcile the plist’s ownership record with the currently loaded service.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — KeepAlive makes service cleanup independent of model-file deletion. The script correctly refuses to claim confirmed shutdown after ambiguous inspection, but the installer deletes first and skips service cleanup when the target is already absent. Consequently, an unload failure is reported yet is not recoverable through an ordinary uninstall retry.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use a serialized, recoverable replacement transition: stage the candidate configuration, preserve the prior ownership record, confirm the loaded generation and model before publishing readiness, and define cleanup or restoration after interruption and failed startup.
  • proposed — Make service reconciliation independent of model-directory existence, confirm shutdown before destructive deletion, and retain a retryable lifecycle-failure result. Treat non-loopback serving as an explicit exposure mode whose authentication requirements are verified before deployment.

Comment thread tinyagentos/installers/mlx_installer.py Resolved
… the plist

CodeRabbit review on jaylfc#3337: install() validated the downloader's target against
the mlx backend root with _contained() but then pinned the *unresolved* string
in the launchd agent, while uninstall() passes the resolved path to
install-mlx-server.sh --uninstall. The script decides whether to unload by
grepping the plist for the directory it is given, so on a host with a symlinked
models root (macOS /var -> /private/var, or a symlinked TAOS_MODELS_ROOT) the
two strings differ, the agent is left loaded and launchd KeepAlive keeps
restarting a server against a directory that no longer exists.

Keep the resolved path from _contained() (rejection behaviour unchanged) and
report it as mlx_model_dir, so the plist and the uninstall argument name the
same directory. New test covers the symlinked-root case end to end: the path in
the install command equals the path in the uninstall command.

Escape values at the launchd plist boundary.

write_launchd_plist() inserts model, venv, and log paths directly into XML. A valid path such as Models & Data produces malformed XML, so launchctl bootstrap can reject the plist before the health check. If generation is escaped without changing uninstall_mlx_agent(), its raw-text comparison will not match &amp; and will leave the served agent running. Use one XML encoder for both operations.

WARNING: mlx_agent_unloaded is set to True even when the agent is NOT unloaded

The shell script returns exit 0 in three cases: (1) agent successfully unloaded, (2) plist pins another model, (3) no plist exists. This Python code treats all three as success, so mlx_agent_unloaded is True even when the agent was deliberately left running because it serves a different model.

Consider distinguishing case (2) in the script (e.g., distinct exit code or stdout marker) and reflecting it here so callers can tell whether the agent was actually unloaded.

…eal state

Two review findings on jaylfc#3337.

CodeRabbit: write_launchd_plist() interpolated the model directory, runtime path
and log paths into XML raw, so a perfectly legal directory such as
"Models & Data" produced malformed XML that launchctl refuses to bootstrap; and
escaping only the write side would have broken uninstall, whose raw-text grep
decides whether the agent it is looking at pins this model. Both sides now go
through xml_escape().

Kilo: install-mlx-server.sh --uninstall exits 0 both when the agent was unloaded
and when it was deliberately left running for a different model, so
uninstall()'s mlx_agent_unloaded was True in cases where nothing was unloaded.
The script now exits 3 for the left-running case, _unload_agent() maps the exit
code to unloaded / left-running / failed, and uninstall() reports
mlx_agent_state with mlx_agent_unloaded true only when the agent is really gone
(a failed unload keeps its message in mlx_agent_error).

Tests: the plist escapes "&" and its decoded --model argument is still the real
path; uninstall matches the escaped path it wrote; the left-running and failed
unload states.

Bot-cycle follow-up on b5e14a1 (head). Two findings, both folded:

CodeRabbit (Minor) - escape the plist values. write_launchd_plist() interpolated the model/runtime/log paths into XML raw: a legal directory such as Models & Data produced malformed XML and launchctl bootstrap would refuse it. Fixed with a single xml_escape() used for every interpolated value and for the --uninstall path comparison, so the two sides cannot disagree (a raw-text grep against an escaped plist would have left the agent loaded). New tests: the plist escapes & while its decoded --model argument is still the real path, and --uninstall matches the escaped path it wrote.

Kilo (WARNING) - mlx_agent_unloaded was true when nothing was unloaded. The script exits 0 in three situations (unloaded / pins another model / no plist), so the boolean lied for the middle one. install-mlx-server.sh --uninstall now exits 3 when it deliberately leaves an agent running for a different model; _unload_agent() maps that to unloaded / left-running / failed, and uninstall() reports mlx_agent_state with mlx_agent_unloaded true only when the agent is really gone (a failure keeps its message in mlx_agent_error). The script's exit-code contract is documented in its header and in the installer constant.

Also folded earlier in this branch, from CodeRabbit's first pass: the agent is pinned to the resolved model path so the plist and the later --uninstall argument name the same directory on a host with a symlinked models root (/var -> /private/var on macOS), with a symlinked-root test.

Gates re-run locally: invariants, diff-gate --base 98dd3c26 and check_changelog_fragment clean; tests/installers/ + tests/test_install_mlx_server.py + test_port_allocator.py 82 passed, and the wider focused set (tests/installers/, test_hardware.py, test_scheduler_discovery.py, test_cluster_s2_24_fix.py, routes/test_store_install_v2.py, test_routes_a2a_gpu_lease.py, test_install_mlx_server.py) 429 passed with -n 8 before this last commit, plus 82 passed on the fixed files after it.

…st really removed

CodeRabbit review (third pass) on jaylfc#3337:

- `uninstall_mlx_agent()` ignored a failing `launchctl bootout` outright, which
  is right when the agent was never loaded but wrong when the label is still
  registered: launchd's KeepAlive would keep restarting the server, and
  MLXInstaller would record "unloaded" anyway. The function now confirms the
  real state with `launchctl print` and fails (exit 1, plist untouched) if the
  label is still loaded.
- The plist removal was unchecked. `set -e` is suspended both by the caller's
  `uninstall_mlx_agent || rc=$?` and by an if/|| context, so a failed `rm -f`
  was reported as a successful unload. It now warns and returns 1.

Tests: a still-loaded agent (launchctl print succeeds) and a failing `rm` both
exit non-zero and keep the plist, the latter verified through `main --uninstall`
so the failure survives main's exit code; the happy path asserts the bootout is
followed by the confirming `print`.

Third pass folded on d2007ea (head). CodeRabbit's two findings were both about the uninstall path telling the truth:

  1. launchctl bootout failure was ignored unconditionally. Correct when the agent was never loaded, wrong when the label is still registered: launchd's KeepAlive keeps restarting the server, and MLXInstaller would still record unloaded. uninstall_mlx_agent() now confirms the bootout with launchctl print and returns 1 (plist untouched, warning on stderr) if the label is still loaded.
  2. The plist removal was unchecked. set -e is suspended inside the caller's uninstall_mlx_agent || rc=$? and by the if ! context, so a failed rm -f was reported as a successful unload. It now warns and returns 1.

Tests, as the review asked: a still-loaded agent (launchctl print succeeds) exits 1 and keeps the plist; a failing rm exits 1 through main --uninstall (so the failure survives main's exit code) and keeps the plist; the happy path asserts the bootout is followed by the confirming print. Gates re-run clean (invariants, diff-gate --base 98dd3c26, check_changelog_fragment); tests/test_install_mlx_server.py + tests/installers/ 265 passed.

Do not treat every launchctl print error as agent absence.

launchctl print returns nonzero when the inspection command fails. It does not define every nonzero result as “unknown service.” A permission or namespace error can occur while the agent remains registered. This path then removes the plist and returns 0, so MLXInstaller sets mlx_agent_unloaded=true while KeepAlive can continue restarting the registered agent.

Handle only the platform-defined unknown-service result as absence. Return the uninstall error status for other inspection failures. Do not hard-code a numeric result because the documented launchctl contract does not provide one universal absence code.

…LX agent is gone

CodeRabbit review (fourth pass) on jaylfc#3337: the bootout confirmation added in the
previous commit read any failing `launchctl print` as "the agent is absent".
A permission or session error also fails while the agent stays registered, and
this path would then remove the plist and report success - exactly the
KeepAlive-restarts-a-deleted-model failure the check was added to prevent.

The probe now reads launchctl's output: only its unknown-service answer
(`Could not find service ... in domain ...`, or a "not found" variant) confirms
absence; any other failure leaves the unload unconfirmed and returns the
uninstall error status without touching the plist. No numeric exit code is
assumed, per the review.

Tests: the launchctl stand-in distinguishes unknown-service, still-loaded and
other-error answers; new case asserts an inconclusive inspection keeps the plist
and exits non-zero.

Fourth pass folded on 2a7662e (head): launchctl print failing was read as "agent absent", but a permission/session error fails the same way while the agent stays registered. The probe now reads launchctl's output: only its unknown-service answer (Could not find service ... in domain ..., or a not-found variant) confirms absence and lets the plist be removed; any other failure returns the uninstall error status with the plist left in place, so MLXInstaller can never record unloaded for an agent it could not confirm gone. No numeric exit code is assumed. The launchctl stand-in in the tests now distinguishes all three answers and a new case covers the inconclusive inspection. Gates clean; tests/test_install_mlx_server.py + tests/installers/ 266 passed.

Follow-up slice for taOS #329 is up: #3351 (branch feat/mlx-multi-model-serving, head 9fba141), stacked on this PR — until #3337 merges its diff also shows these commits, my delta is the one commit on top. It extends the serving half to one launchd agent + one port per model (com.taos.mlx-server-<app_id>), so installing a second MLX model no longer re-points/evicts the first; the first model keeps the reserved 7837 (so the setup Metal probe is unchanged) and further models take a non-reserved free port. An upgrade retires the legacy com.taos.mlx-server agent only when it pins the same model. Rebased onto dev once this lands.

hognek added a commit to hognek/tinyagentos that referenced this pull request Oct 1, 2026
… each

mlx_lm.server serves one model per process, so taOS jaylfc#3337's single launchd agent
meant installing a second MLX model re-pointed (and silently stopped) the first:
the last install won. Each model now gets its own agent, labelled
com.taos.mlx-server-<app_id> (derived from the model directory's name, so N
installs collide neither in label nor in plist), and its own port. The reserved
default 7837 is kept whenever no other agent's plist claims it, so the setup
checklist's Metal probe still finds the backend; any further model gets a
deterministic free port from port_allocator.allocate_host_port(), excluding the
ports other agents' plists already name (an agent loading a model holds no
socket yet, so a bound-port probe cannot see it). A model whose agent already
exists keeps the port written in its plist, so a re-install never moves a
running server.

Installing model B therefore no longer evicts model A. Uninstall unloads only
the agents that pin the removed model (its per-model label, or the legacy
com.taos.mlx-server plist an upgrade left behind) and leaves every other model's
agent alone. An install retires the legacy single agent only when it pins the
same model, freeing 7837 for the new per-model agent.

Review findings folded in (Kilo + CodeRabbit on jaylfc#3351):
- _serve_port no longer falls through to a fresh allocation when this model's
  own agent has an unreadable port (Kilo CRITICAL);
- mlx_server_is_running narrows its except to the failures that mean "no valid
  200 came back" (OSError, BadStatusLine, IncompleteRead, ValueError) instead of
  every Exception, so a half-up server still reads as "not running" while an
  unrelated programming error surfaces (Kilo WARNING, two rounds);
- the setup checklist's metal probe fails closed instead of 500-ing the route
  when a probe raises (Kilo WARNING), with a test;
- the success summary names each agent's own log file, not the legacy shared
  name, and jaylfc#3337's changelog fragment no longer claims single-model serving
  (CodeRabbit);
- port selection and registration are serialized under a per-event-loop lock, so
  two Store installs awaited together cannot both claim the default port and
  report an endpoint for the other model's server (CodeRabbit).

Concurrency red-first: with the lock removed, two installs gathered together
both chose 7837 ("both installs claimed the same port: [7837, 7837]"); with it,
the second install sees the first model's agent and allocates a free port
(tests/installers/test_mlx_installer.py::TestMLXMultiModelServing).

Red-first (verified at 2a7662e, the parent commit):
- two installs left a single com.taos.mlx-server.plist (the second model took the
  first one's server down) and both were pinned to --port 7837;
- the installer regression test asserts a distinct port for the second model and
  fails there with "assert 7837 != 7837" (tests/installers/test_mlx_installer.py).

Task: t_d81f80ac
Tests: 280 focused (tests/installers/ + tests/test_install_mlx_server.py) pass.

Docs-Reviewed: [installers, routes] README documents one agent/port per MLX model; the setup metal probe now fails closed instead of raising

bot-review-gate is BLOCKED at the fork-PR verdict (EXIT_FORK_UNREVIEWED, exit 3). Needs a lead action, not a code change.

The only failing check on this PR is bot-review-gate. Its verdict is the fork path, not the CodeRabbit path:

This PR comes from a fork, and per the gate contract (scripts/check_bot_review.py) fork PRs receive no automated CodeRabbit review, so the bot verdict is ignored entirely. A fork PR clears the gate only when either:

  1. a maintainer has an APPROVED review on the current head SHA (4036b15fff49bf93c957e0a6a71c86268786330e), or
  2. the lead-reviewed label is applied.

Note: the bot-review-allow label does not clear this. It waives stub-shaped bot output, and a fork PR has no bot output to waive.

Secondary: the gate also fails to self-heal its own check run. On a fork PR the workflow's GITHUB_TOKEN is read-only, so its attempt to POST the check run returns 403 Forbidden, and the check stays FAILURE (mergeStateStatus stays BLOCKED rather than UNSTABLE).

Everything else is green on this head (30 pass / 3 skip). Could a maintainer apply lead-reviewed, or approve on 4036b15fff49?

This is the same single blocker as the rest of the set: #3237, #3351, #3755.
