CARD TITLE (intent, not commit subject): litellm_config: register embedding routes for OpenAI-compatible local backends (llama-cpp, and lmstudio once #3755 is on dev)

Autonomous build of board card tsk-rnf3bx.

litellm_config: register embedding routes for llama-cpp and lmstudio

  • Probe /models endpoint on llama-cpp backends for embedding models
  • Conditionally support lmstudio when added to providers.ALL_TYPES
  • Register taos-embedding-default alias with first-wins semantics
  • Add tests for llama-cpp and lmstudio embedding discovery

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added automatic embedding-model discovery for llama-cpp and LM Studio backends.
    • Registered compatible embedding models with the appropriate OpenAI-compatible model prefix.
    • Added support for the default embedding alias when supported embedding models are available.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved handling of unavailable or failed model discovery without disrupting chat model configuration.

Add embedding model discovery for OpenAI-compatible local backends (llama-cpp)
by probing the /models endpoint. The first embedding model found claims the
taos-embedding-default alias.

📝 Walkthrough

The configuration builder now discovers embedding models from llama-cpp and lmstudio through their /models endpoints. It registers matching embedding routes and a taos-embedding-default alias. Tests cover successful discovery, disabled discovery, and probe failures.

Add llama-cpp and LM Studio discovery to the gateway path.

embedding_table passes discover=False, so llama-cpp and LM Studio entries are registered only when their URLs exist in discovered. _discovered currently probes only Ollama-compatible backends. Therefore, normal gateway requests can omit the new embedding routes and taos-embedding-default alias.

Extend _discovered to probe the supported OpenAI-compatible backends concurrently through asyncio.to_thread(litellm_config._discover_openai_compatible_models, ...), merge those results into its returned mapping, and update the build_model_list documentation to describe all supported discovery paths.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Embedding entries omit the backend credentials.

The chat entry for the same backend sets api_key from api_key_secret or api_key. The new embed_params and the alias copy never set api_key. An OpenAI-compatible llama-cpp or lmstudio server that requires a key then rejects the embedding request.

The _discover_openai_compatible_models probe also sends no Authorization header. A key-protected server returns 401, and discovery yields [].

Copy the key resolution used at lines 232-235 and 310-313 into embed_params. Pass the same key to the probe if you want auth-protected servers discovered.

Lead review on 94f043c: the build_model_list change matches the card and is correct for the LiteLLM config writer (discover=True). Blocking on the two CodeRabbit findings on this head, both verified from the code:

  • Major: tinyagentos/llm_gateway/embeddings.py embedding_table() passes discover=False with a discovered map from _discovered(), which only probes ollama, rkllama and hailo-ollama. A llama-cpp or lmstudio backend therefore gets no embedding entry on the gateway request path.
  • Minor: the new embed_params and alias copy drop api_key, while the chat entry resolves api_key_secret, then api_key.

The card left the gateway path out of scope, so this is a card gap, not a build error. Fix-forward card tsk-cgocwj (BASE exec/tsk-rnf3bx, RED-FIRST). Merge order: tsk-cgocwj PR, then this PR; close tsk-rnf3bx and tsk-cgocwj by hand.

…est path

Fix-forward for jaylfc#3876 (card tsk-rnf3bx), fixing two CodeRabbit defects on the
llama-cpp/lmstudio embedding routes.

Defect A (Major): the gateway request path never discovered these models.
_discovered() only probed ollama-family backends, so build_model_list(...,
discover=False) saw an empty discovered map and emitted no embedding route.
Added _discover_openai_compatible_backends_concurrent in litellm_config.py
(mirroring _discover_ollama_backends_concurrent); _discovered() now runs both
probes via asyncio.gather, merges the results, and includes llama-cpp and
lmstudio (only when registered in ALL_TYPES) in the cache key and probe set.

Defect B (Minor): the embedding entry's litellm_params omitted api_key, so a
key-protected server rejected the call. embed_params now sets api_key with the
same precedence as the chat entry (api_key_secret first, else api_key) before
the taos-embedding-default alias copy; the alias inherits it. The ollama
block is untouched.
