Release note (label bug, security): on epoll, io_uring and adaptive, a detached connection (SSE, WebSocket) whose peer takes none of the bytes queued for it for WriteTimeout is now closed. WriteTimeout defaults to 60 s, so this applies to every WebSocket and SSE server on the native engines by default, server-wide; WriteTimeout: -1 is the only opt-out. A WebSocket client that applied backpressure by not reading used to be held for ever and is closed now.

What this changes

A detached connection (WebSocket, SSE) on epoll and io_uring was exempt from WriteTimeout: checkTimeouts skipped it (epoll/loop.go if snap.detached {, iouring/worker.go if h1Detached {, both at 7b02cae), and a write on a native engine only queues, so a client that stayed connected and read nothing held its stream for ever (a 4 KiB receive buffer, events sent: OnDisconnect never ran in 6 to 7 s on any native cell of the new test, while std ends at WriteTimeout: 1.01 to 1.02 s with 1 s, 2.49 s with 2 s, final/red-sse.out).

Now a truly-detached conn that has bytes queued for its peer, and whose peer takes none of them for WriteTimeout, is closed. "Takes none" is evidence from the socket and the engine, never lastActivity (the last read: an SSE client's request, a WebSocket peer's pings):

  • epoll: the clock is closeSince (a detached conn is never in the closing state that uses it, closeWhenFlushed closes it at once), started by the first sweep that finds snap.writePending, restarted when noteClosingAcked finds the peer's acknowledged byte count (tcp_info) moved (a sample every quarter of the bound, none before the first quarter has passed), ended by the sweep that finds nothing queued. It runs in both continue-branches of the detached case (idle deadline unset, and idle deadline pushed into the future, which is what a WebSocket peer that sends pings does); the deadline-expired path and its 1 s drain grace are unchanged. A socket that reports no acknowledged count is not bounded (as before).
  • io_uring: stallSince (next to lastActivity, worker-thread-only), started by the first sweep that finds connSendPending (read in its own look, detachedSendPending, under detachMu with TryLock; it is not in snapshotH1Deadlines, which the recv and dispatch paths share), restamped by completeSend when a SEND took bytes and by the sweep's tcp_info sample (the stream goroutine's inline writes are seen that way), cleared by completeSend when everything is sent and by the sweep that finds nothing queued.
  • io_uring, every SEND of a truly-detached conn is marked as one the worker must not wait for with no timeout (watchesStall in markLongSend, the remainderWatch/sendWatch marks of v1.6.0 polish: io_uring engine #884 items 62 and 64), whatever its size. Review round 1 found that the leftover of the stream's inline write, a SEND under longSendBytes (64 KiB), was not marked, so a producer that went quiet after it left the worker in its untimed wait (mode 3a) with no sweep to run: the client was held for ever on io_uring (a quiet stream, HeartbeatInterval -1). See Review round 1 below.
  • Bound: Config.WriteTimeout when it is above 0; -1 (resolved to 0) is no bound, unlike a closing conn's closingDrainFloor.
  • The close is the engine's ordinary close of a detached conn (closeConn): OnDetachClose runs, so the SSE middleware cancels Client.Context() through SetWSDetachClose and OnDisconnect runs; the WebSocket middleware's next write returns websocket: write on closed connection. No middleware change.
  • WebSocket peers get the same bound (USER DECISION in the plan). The known-gap paragraph of middleware/sse/doc.go is replaced, and the Config.WriteTimeout doc of the root package and of middleware/websocket say what the native engines do now. The docs repo text is docs: the native engines close a detached connection whose peer takes none of its queued bytes for WriteTimeout docs#101 (draft; it describes v1.6.0, merge after the release).

Tests

Test commit c5289d3 alone, then the fix commit 9915418, then follow-ups (6f1374f: lint unparam on noteClosingAcked, and the small-events policy above; 2fe07dd: the early-drop count is reported from the test goroutine; ce4706d: the iouring sweep benchmark; 55279c7: a neighbour, below; 7672253: the sweep's send-state look, RULE 74 below; a06580e: a test comment; then review round 1: 7c6fead, fdfc9f8, e314576, a7700fe, f417d89, fe43272, see "Review round 1"). Runs in golang:1.27.2 linux/arm64 containers (linuxkit 7.0.12, io_uring tier "optional", so adaptive runs on epoll), outputs under lanes-20261009/SSENONREAD/final/ and final2/:

Test main 7b02cae + the test files with the fix
TestNonReadingClientEndsStream888 (SSE, 4 KiB receive buffer that reads nothing, MaxQueueDepth 4 with ClientPolicyClose; epoll, io_uring, adaptive, each async and sync; 4 producers: one 8 MiB event then a 1 KB trickle every 5 ms, the same then one event every 300 ms, 4 KiB events every 0.5 ms with no burst then every 300 ms, and the last with ReadHeaderTimeout -1 (no epoll timerfd)) final test file on main 7b02cae: 20 of 20 native cells FAIL (epoll, io_uring and adaptive; OnDisconnect never ran in 6 to 9 s), std 4 of 4 and the 5 slow-reader cells PASS (the reviewer's run, review-r1-correctness/logs/basetests-sse.log; the lane's own run, final2/final-test-base-sse.out, counted the 16 epoll and io_uring cells; the first test commit's run had 20 of 20 native cells FAIL, final/red-sse.out) 24 of 24 cells PASS including std (final2/green-sse-head.out, head 7672253): OnDisconnect 1.00 to 1.12 s after connect with WriteTimeout 1 s, 2.44 to 2.57 s with 2 s (asserted not before WriteTimeout on the native engines, so neither the 64 MiB cap nor a policy close ends it). Also green under -race on all seven packages below and in the CI Coverage job
TestSlowReadingClientKeepsStream888 (a client reading ~100 KB/s of a 400 KB/s stream with a multi-MB backlog queued for 5 WriteTimeouts) PASS (control: no bound at all) PASS
TestNonReadingPeerEndsConn888 (WebSocket peer that sends a ping every 100 ms and reads nothing, IdleTimeout 1 h) epoll, io_uring FAIL (not closed in 7 s; final/red-ws.out) PASS: the handler's write fails 1.29 / 1.42 s after connect
epoll detach_stall_888_linux_test.go, io_uring detach_stall_888_linux_test.go (loopback TCP pair, checkTimeouts driven directly): peer takes nothing closed after the bound; idle deadline pushed out still closed; peer that reads kept; WriteTimeout 0 never; clock ends with the queue the first two (and epoll's clock test) FAIL; the rest PASS all PASS

Negative controls, same tests, both mutants rebuilt from the head 7672253 (final2/head-control-mut1-*.out, final2/head-control-mut2-*.out; SSE runs of the earlier head: final2/final-test-*-sse.out):

  1. mut1, the two unfixed checkTimeouts files copied over the fixed tree (compiles): 16 of 16 non-reading SSE cells FAIL, the WebSocket test and the in-package non-reader tests FAIL; the slow-reader tests stay PASS (as on main).
  2. mut2, a different mutant, the stall clock keyed on lastActivity (mutate.py): TestSlowReadingClientKeepsStream888 goes red on epoll and io_uring (4 of 4 cells; the closed client was reading), as do the in-package reading-peer tests; TestNonReadingPeerEndsConn888 goes red (the pings keep lastActivity fresh) and so does the in-package non-reader test. The non-reading SSE cells stay green under mut2 (the request is old, so the mutant closes them too): they do not detect it, the slow-reader test does.

Also run on the fix: go vet ./... linux/arm64 and linux/amd64 clean, GOOS=darwin go build ./..., go test -c of the touched packages for amd64; the packages internal/engine/epoll, internal/engine/iouring, internal/adaptive, middleware/sse, middleware/websocket, test/server and the root, whole, under -race (final/race_*.out, tree of 6f1374f) and without it (final/full_*.out, tree of 2fe07dd); the last two commits touch iouring worker.go (7672253) and one test file (55279c7), so at the head the iouring package was run whole under -race (final2/race-iouring-head.out), the SSE tests without it (final2/green-sse-head.out), the WebSocket test under -race (final2/race-ws-head.out) and TestChunked*1029 (final2/chunked1029.out).

CI, read from the job logs (kept under final2/ci/ and r2/ci/): every job (28 pass, 1 skipping) is green on the head fe43272 (run 39138955949: Unit steps job 117709194146, Lint 117709194032, Adaptive 117709194223; run 39138955998: Coverage job 117709193968; the Unit steps log has TestQuietNonReadingClientEndsStream888 25 of 25 PASS on the runner, 1.3 to 1.9 s for the closing epoll and io_uring cells, r2/ci/job-117709194146-fe43272.log), and was green on a06580e (run 39130674214 / 39130674215) and on 55279c7. The run on a7700fe (run 39136848318) failed Lint only: unconvert, one conversion in the new unit test, fixed in f417d89. Failures on the way:

  • Lint at 9915418 (run 39120213948, job 117654118543): unparam, noteClosingAcked result never used; fixed in 6f1374f.
  • Coverage (go test -race -covermode=atomic) at 9915418 (run 39120214112, job 117654118987): the small-events cells of TestNonReadingClientEndsStream888 ended 0.52 to 0.71 s after connect on every native cell, before the bound; the cause was not logged then, and the 8 to 39 early drops counted at 2fe07dd (above) show the queue overflow; fixed in 6f1374f (test only).
  • Unit steps at 2fe07dd (run 39124102290, job 117665508440) and at ce4706d (run 39125806713, job 117670563208): TestChunkedAsyncRoute1029/io_uring failed both times with io_uring_setup: cannot allocate memory (the runner's 8 MiB memlock; its server start had no ENOMEM retry), fixed in 55279c7. Why it started to fail on this branch is not established: it passed on main's CI runs, and a package of this branch (middleware/sse) holds io_uring rings for tens of seconds while the Unit steps job runs packages in parallel, which is a candidate, not a finding.
  • Coverage at ce4706d (run 39125806725, job 117670563070): TestStreamedResponseIsDelivered/adaptive/async-route/close received 2 681 685 of 8 388 608 body bytes, then EOF, 0.12 s in. That is a non-detached Connection: close StreamWriter response, and the new code of epoll is under snap.detached; not reproduced in 40 -race runs per tree (7b02cae and ce4706d) on arm64 (final2/streamed-flake-*.out); the Coverage job passed the same test at 9915418 and at 55279c7. Appended to v1.6.0 polish: CI and tests #890.

Review round 1

The reviewers' major and minors, each with what was done. Logs are under lanes-20261009/SSENONREAD/r2/; every log there begins with the SHA of the tree and its status (run.sh and container-run.sh now write them in: the logs of the first round (final/, final2/) have head= empty, because the worktree's .git points outside the container). The -race runs and the controls below are on a7700fe. The head fe43272 differs from it in three files (git diff --stat a7700fe9..HEAD): config.go and middleware/sse/doc.go (comments), and detach_stall_round2_888_linux_test.go (the unconvert fix that the Lint run on a7700fe asked for, and TestStalledCloseSkipsTheClosingDrain888 extended: the closing sample of a silent peer must not give the stalled conn a fresh drain, and a peer that reads restamps it; green at fe43272, r2/green-iouring-unit-head.out, and red without the set-back drain clock, r2/control-mut3c2-iouring-unit.out). The benchmarks are on e314576; git diff --stat e314576..HEAD -- ':!*_test.go' shows the later commits touch only comments in config.go and middleware/sse/doc.go.

Major: a quiet stream on io_uring was never bounded. A non-reading client, and a producer that sends one event of the socket's capacity plus a few KiB and then nothing (heartbeat off): the inline write left a SEND of under 64 KiB, which markLongSend did not mark, so the worker waited for it with no timeout, no iteration ran, and no sweep reached sweepDetachedStall. The reviewer's mechanism was right, and so was the 64 KiB threshold. Fix: markLongSend marks every SEND of a truly-detached conn when WriteTimeout > 0 (watchesStall: a detach mutex, WriteTimeout above 0, h1State.Detached; async-mode conns that are not detached are not marked). The new test TestQuietNonReadingClientEndsStream888 (middleware/sse/sse_quiet_888_linux_test.go): one event of measured capacity plus 4 KiB, 40 KiB or 256 KiB, then silence, SocketSendBuf 64 KiB, 4 KiB client receive buffer that reads nothing, HeartbeatInterval -1, WriteTimeout 1 s, with and without the header timer (4 KiB), epoll, io_uring, adaptive, each async and sync; and capacity minus 2 KiB as the control (the event fits, nothing is queued, not closed in 3 s).

a06580e + the new test a7700fe
TestQuietNonReadingClientEndsStream888 6 of 25 subtests FAIL: io_uring async and sync at 4 KiB, 4 KiB without the header timer and 40 KiB (OnDisconnect never ran in 8.3 s); epoll, adaptive (on epoll here) and the 256 KiB and control cells PASS (red-sse-quiet.out) 25 of 25 PASS under -race (race-sse.out): OnDisconnect 1.00 to 1.09 s on epoll, 1.00 to 1.15 s on adaptive (epoll), 1.35 to 1.91 s on io_uring after connect, never before WriteTimeout; the control cells are not closed
unit tests TestDetachedSendOfAnySizeIsWatched888, TestDetachedSparseSweepsGiveAReadingPeerABound888, TestStalledCloseSkipsTheClosingDrain888, TestStallLookRateLimit888 the first three FAIL (red-iouring-unit.out: tree r2base = a06580e plus the two new test files; the rate-limit test is left out and the lastStallLook resets removed from the copy, since they need the new symbols) PASS in the whole internal/engine/iouring package under -race (race-iouring-pkg.out)

Single-revert controls on a7700fe (control-mut3*.out, controls.sh): without || w.watchesStall(cs), the quiet io_uring cells at 4 KiB (with and without the header timer) and 40 KiB FAIL, async and sync (6 cells; the 256 KiB and control cells PASS), and TestDetachedSendOfAnySizeIsWatched888 FAILs on 2 cases; without the first-sample restamp the sparse-sweep test FAILs (both of its cases); without the drain clock set back TestStalledCloseSkipsTheClosingDrain888 FAILs; without the rate limit TestStallLookRateLimit888 FAILs. mut2 (stall clock keyed on lastActivity) and mut1 (main's loop.go and worker.go over the head; the iouring package tests do not compile against it, since they call the head's methods) were rebuilt from a7700fe: the slow-reader SSE test FAILs on epoll and io_uring under mut2 (control-mut2-sse.out), the WebSocket test FAILs under both (control-mut1-ws.out, control-mut2-ws.out), the epoll package's in-package tests FAIL under both, io_uring's under mut2, and, under mut1, 8 of 8 async non-reading SSE cells and 8 of 8 async quiet closing cells (epoll and io_uring) FAIL (control-mut1-sse.out); the non-reading and quiet SSE cells stay green under mut2 (the request is old, so the mutant closes them too: the slow-reader, WebSocket and in-package tests are what catch it).

What "about WriteTimeout" means. The peer's progress is sampled every quarter of WriteTimeout (tcp_info acknowledged bytes; a SEND completion restarts the clock at once), the first sample of a stall is a baseline, so the close comes between about 3/4 and 5/4 of WriteTimeout after the peer last took a byte (a peer that took bytes only in the first quarter is closed up to a quarter early; one the sample sees progress from, up to a quarter late), plus the engine's sweep interval: up to about 0.1 s on epoll, up to 2 s on io_uring (the sweep while a SEND is outstanding comes every 1 to 2 s, sweepWatchDue). The logged values for a peer that never reads: 1.00 to 1.15 s on epoll and adaptive (epoll), 1.35 to 1.91 s on io_uring, with WriteTimeout 1 s. When sweeps are further apart than WriteTimeout (a WriteTimeout under about 2 s on an idle io_uring worker) the first sample of a stall is met after the bound and the conn is given one more bound, so the close can come at up to about twice WriteTimeout. The earlier claim that it was "about WriteTimeout on all native engines" is replaced by this in Config.WriteTimeout, middleware/sse/doc.go and docs#101. The tests assert the lower bound (not before WriteTimeout, for a peer that never reads) and a 6 s slack; none pins the 3/4 and 5/4 for a peer that reads and then stops.

Finding What was done
minor: io_uring sampleDetachedAcked lacked the first-sample grace restamped when the first sample is met after the bound, as noteClosingAcked does; TestDetachedSparseSweepsGiveAReadingPeerABound888 (sweeps 1.5 x WriteTimeout apart: the reading peer is kept, the silent one closed at the sample after)
minor: sse doc.go said ClientPolicyClose is not what ends the stream reworded in doc.go and docs#101: it ends it earlier when the queue overflows, WriteTimeout is the bound when it does not
minor: per-core cost priced at the idle cadence rate limit stallLookDue and WriteTimeout <= 0 skips the look (the bench ran at 0 and measured the wasted path); figures restated in Cost
minor: a stall close waited for its queue to drain for another bound closeStalled sets the drain clock back, so the next sweep reaps the conn unless the peer's acknowledged bytes moved again; the conn holds its descriptor, queue and kernel buffer for about one bound plus a sweep, not two (epoll closes at once). Behaviour change on the stall path only, TestStalledCloseSkipsTheClosingDrain888
minor: release note labels bug, security, engine/epoll, engine/iouring; the note is at the top. Not labelled breaking: the orchestrator can decide
minor: stale item numbers #888 items 38 and 39, #884 item 69 in the source comments, the exported godoc, this body and docs#101. The old commit messages keep the old numbers (pushed; the squash uses this PR's title). The numbers are positions in the checklist as of 2026-10-18 and have moved before
minor: provenance logs carry head, tree status and a diff hash; the benchmark's PROVENANCE names the SHAs
minor: docs claimed "on every engine" HTTP/1.1 on every engine; an h2c stream is not covered yet, and there is no minimum rate (docs#101, config.go, doc.go); the gaps are #884 item 79. Non-TCP does not apply (TCP listeners only). Fixed-file conns: dev-only, in item 79
nit: stale benchmark comments, "kernel before 4.1" comments, "16 of 16" rewritten; the red row says 20 of 20 native cells
nit: completeSend stored on every all-sent completion store only if stallSince is set
nit: a peer opening its window by a few bytes keeps 64 MiB per conn stated in the docs and in #884 item 79; a minimum rate would be a behaviour change

Also run at a7700fe under -race in the arm64 container: middleware/sse (the non-reading, slow-reader and quiet tests; race-sse.out), middleware/websocket TestNonReadingPeerEndsConn888 (race-ws.out), and the packages internal/engine/epoll, internal/engine/iouring and internal/adaptive, whole (race-epoll-pkg.out, race-iouring-pkg.out, race-adaptive-pkg.out). Not rerun after the round: test/server and the root package (the round touches neither, except comments in config.go).

Cost (RULE 74)

arm64 only: golang:1.27.2 linux/arm64 container on this laptop (linuxkit, 8 CPUs) under the exclusive timing lock; three binaries per package, built from 7b02cae plus the benchmark files (old), a byte-identical copy of it (oldtwin, the A/A twin) and the head e314576 (fixed, no code change since; bench2/PROVENANCE-r2-arm64.txt has the SHAs and the tree status, the benchmark files are in bench2/r2-benchfiles/), 24 rounds, the order rotating each round, 300 ms per sample (bench2-arm64-r2.out, bench2-arm64-r2.summary by summarize-bench2.py; the figures of the first round of this PR, taken before the rate limit and with WriteTimeout 0, are in bench2-arm64.summary and superseded). The benchmark now runs with WriteTimeout 60 s, the default, which is the configuration that pays (with WriteTimeout -1 the look is skipped). A delta inside the A/A floor is inconclusive, not zero. Medians; the A/A floor is one twin pair, and the epoll rows show it understates the spread (those rows have no code change on their path, and read +1.2 to +4.7 % against a floor of -2.9 to +1.3 %):

Benchmark A/A floor A/B fixed vs old
epoll CheckTimeouts865 async/256, async/4096, sync/256, sync/4096 (no code change on this path) -2.9, +1.3, -0.1, +1.2 % +4.7, +2.0, +3.1, +1.2 %
iouring CheckTimeouts888 attached/256, attached/4096 (the sweep over ordinary conns) +2.9, +1.5 % +4.9, +2.7 % (minima: +1.2 and +2.5 %, floors -3.4 and +1.3 %)
iouring CheckTimeouts888 detached-idle/256, detached-idle/4096 (streams with nothing queued, the look due on every sweep) +1.7, +2.2 % +82.6, +74.2 %: +5.2 and +6.3 ns per detached conn per look (1 601 to 2 923 ns, 34 872 to 60 755 ns)
iouring CheckTimeouts888 detached-idle-limited/256, /4096 (the same, sweeps back to back, so the rate limit lets almost none take the look) -0.7, -1.6 % +0.0, +0.1 %
iouring CompleteSend888 (all-sent path of an ordinary conn) +2.4 % +0.5 % (minima: +5.3 % against a floor of +3.0 %)
iouring MarkLongSend888 inline / async / detached (a 512-byte SEND, on every SEND's path) +0.1 / 0.0 / +0.1 % 0.24 to 0.55 / 0.69 / 1.00 ns: +0.31, +0.45 and +0.76 ns per SEND (the last is the marked case, which counts the conn)

All zero allocs/op. The ordinary-conn deltas are 1 to 5 %, of the size the epoll rows show on an unchanged path: I do not call them zero or measured. Cost per core of the detached look. It is rate limited (stallLookDue): at most one look per sixteenth of WriteTimeout, clamped to 25 ms to 250 ms (the io_uring sweep has no wall-clock floor: it runs every 32 iterations while a conn is detached, hundreds of times a second on a busy worker, which the first version of this PR priced as if it ran every 50 to 100 ms). At 10 000 detached conns and 6.3 ns each, one look is 63 us: 4 looks a second at the default WriteTimeout of 60 s (the 250 ms cap) is 0.025 % of a core, 16 a second at 1 s is 0.1 %, and 40 a second at the 25 ms floor (WriteTimeout 400 ms or less) is 0.25 %. Servers with WriteTimeout -1 skip it. These are products of the measured ns and the rate, not a measurement of a loaded worker.

What marking every SEND of a detached conn costs the run loop. A marked SEND takes the worker out of its untimed wait (mode 3a, no ext_arg) for the timed one (mode 3b) while it is outstanding, and sendWatch adds a clock read every 8th iteration. That would matter if detached conns submitted ring SENDs routinely. They do not: the stream's goroutine writes inline when no SEND is outstanding and the socket takes the bytes, and only the leftover, or a write behind a backlog, goes to the ring. Counted with a scratch counter in markLongSend (a copy of e314576 with three atomic counters, never committed; r2/count-ws.out, r2/count-sse.out, linuxkit loopback): a WebSocket echo of 3 000 messages of 100 B to 256 KiB (218 MiB), async and sync, and an SSE stream to a client that reads steadily (1 KiB every 2 ms, 64 KiB every 2 ms, 1 MiB every 50 ms; 3 s each; async and sync): 0 markLongSend calls on any of them. The positive control, an SSE client with a 4 KiB receive buffer that reads nothing and 256 KiB events, counted 1 call, a detached conn's SEND under longSendBytes (async and sync). So the timed wait is entered while a detached peer is not taking bytes, which is the case the bound is for. Loopback only: a slow real link makes the socket refuse more often, and the count there is not measured.

iouring.connState grows from 688 to 696 bytes (unchanged by the round: final2/size.out). completeSend pays a load and a branch on cs.stallSince per SEND completion, and a store only when the clock is set (the first version stored on every all-sent completion).

OWED, not run: amd64 timing (this Mac runs amd64 under emulation, which is not a measurement; the amd64 binaries of the first round are built, bench2/*-amd64.test, and are of the first head), a quiet native amd64 window, and the 6.x kernels of the CI runners for the benchmarks. RULE 74 asks for the amd64 A/B before the lane is called done: this lane is not done until it is run.

Findings, not fixed here

  • On main, an 8 MiB event followed by a 1 KB event every 5 ms ended the stream of a non-reading client 57 to 92 ms after connect on io_uring and on adaptive over epoll (superseded-nosettle-red-main.out), and on the CI runner 4 KiB events every 0.5 ms overflow the 4-slot queue on every native engine: a policy close while the drain goroutine lags, not the engine's bound. Appended to v1.6.0 polish: io_uring engine #884 as a new item (RULE 92 search of celeris, probatorium, docs and loadgen by mechanism found no tracker).
  • TestStreamedResponseIsDelivered/adaptive/async-route/close failed once in CI (above): appended to v1.6.0 polish: CI and tests #890.
  • #884 item 67 (WriteTimeout does not bound a stalled keep-alive HTTP/1.1 response on io_uring) is a different path (a response that is not detached) and is untouched.
  • h2c SSE is not covered and was not tested here: an HTTP/2 conn is never detached, so this bound does not apply to it (its queued bytes are limited by the flow-control windows and the 64 MiB cap of epoll, iouring: deterministic tests of the H2 64 MiB cap, the pendingBytes resync and the refused-write close (v1.6.0 polish item) #1066). Appended with the other known gaps (a fixed-file io_uring conn, and the absence of a minimum rate: a peer that opens its window by a few bytes every WriteTimeout/4 keeps up to 64 MiB of queue per conn) as v1.6.0 polish: io_uring engine #884 item 79. A non-TCP socket (epoll fails open on it) does not apply to a served conn: the listener is TCP (Config.Addr).
  • v1.6.0 polish: io_uring engine #884 item 74 (a small SEND into an already full socket on an otherwise idle worker is still waited for with no timeout, for conns that are not detached) is a different path and is untouched; this PR closes it for truly-detached conns only.

Neighbours fixed in this PR

  • noteClosingAcked (epoll) returned a result nobody used (unparam in CI): it returns nothing now.
  • server1029 (test/server, TestChunkedAsyncRoute1029) started its server without the io_uring ENOMEM retry the other servers of the package use; it uses startServerConfig761 now (v1.6.0 polish: CI and tests #890 item 55 is the memlock class of failure).

Not run, owed

  • amd64 native timing (RULE 74, above), real CI kernels for the benchmarks, the cluster.
  • io_uring fixed-file conns (ACCEPT_DIRECT): their evidence is completeSend only (no tcp_info, no inline writes); no test drives one.
  • A socket without tcp_info on io_uring keeps completeSend as its only evidence; on epoll it is not bounded (not reachable on a served conn: the listeners are TCP).
  • Review: the two Opus lenses (correctness/locking and hot-path cost) were not run as separate agents by this session (no subagent tool); advisor (Opus) consultations stood in for them, and their findings (SSE control pattern ran no tests; sparse small-event and no-timerfd cells; the first-sample getsockopt on every episode; non-TCP sockets; the early-drop panic hazard; stale red evidence; the benchmark of the sweep itself) are in the history of this branch.

Open question

The plan's USER DECISION (WebSocket peers get the same bound) is implemented as the default; no WebSocket-specific knob. If a deployment wants a read-only WebSocket peer to be exempt, WriteTimeout: -1 is the only switch, and it is server wide.

…takes none of its queued bytes (v1.6.0 polish items)

An SSE client and a WebSocket peer that read nothing, on epoll, io_uring and
adaptive (std as the control), a client that reads slowly, and the sweep of
each engine against a loopback TCP pair. The non-reading cases fail on main: a
detached conn is exempt from WriteTimeout.

…ytes for WriteTimeout is closed (v1.6.0 polish items)

A truly-detached conn (WebSocket, SSE) was exempt from WriteTimeout, and a
write on a native engine only queues, so a client that stayed connected and
read nothing held its stream for ever (the SSE queue never filled, so
ClientPolicyClose was never reached). The sweep now closes a detached conn
that has bytes queued and whose peer took none for WriteTimeout, measured on
the bytes the peer acknowledges and the SENDs that completed, never on the
last read of the connection. The close reaches the middleware as any engine
close does, so an SSE stream's context ends and OnDisconnect runs.

📝 Walkthrough

Native engines now close detached connections when queued writes make no progress for WriteTimeout. The change adds stall tracking and timeout checks, updates timeout documentation, and adds Linux tests for stalled and progressing SSE, WebSocket, and socket peers.

Changes: Detached connection write-stall handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Timeout contract and stall state
config.go, internal/engine/epoll/conn.go, internal/engine/iouring/conn.go, middleware/sse/doc.go, middleware/websocket/config.go
Documentation describes detached-stream WriteTimeout behavior, including progress sampling and exclusions. io_uring connection state adds a stall timestamp and resets it when connection state is released.
epoll stall checks and tests
internal/engine/epoll/loop.go, internal/engine/epoll/conn.go, internal/engine/epoll/detach_stall_*_888_linux_test.go
epoll checks queued writes during timeout sweeps and uses acknowledged TCP bytes to detect progress. Tests cover silent peers, progressing peers, zero timeout, drained queues, and non-TCP sockets.
io_uring stall checks and validation
internal/engine/iouring/worker.go, internal/engine/iouring/conn.go, internal/engine/iouring/detach_stall*_888_linux_test.go, internal/engine/iouring/*_bench_888_linux_test.go
io_uring tracks detached sends, samples acknowledged bytes, paces stall checks, and closes stalled connections. Tests cover timeout handling, progress, clock resets, and send-size cases; benchmarks measure timeout sweeps, send completion, and send marking.
SSE and WebSocket regression tests
middleware/sse/*_888_linux_test.go, middleware/sse/sse_disconnect_linux_test.go, middleware/websocket/*_888_linux_test.go, middleware/websocket/engine_linux_test.go
Linux tests cover non-reading and slow-reading SSE clients and non-reading WebSocket peers. Test helpers now accept complete server configurations.

Server test startup helper

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared test server startup
test/server/chunked_split_1029_linux_test.go
The chunked upload test uses startServerConfig761 to start the server and register its upload routes.

Result: NO regression on all 10 cells. rps ratio of this PR to main is 0.992 to 1.003 across cells, against an A/A twin spread of at most 0.013 (0.004 on most); p99 ratio 0.976 to 1.007 against a twin spread of at most 0.037; SSE and WebSocket cells also checked on SUT CPU (ratio 0.986 to 0.998, twin 0.022 at most) and errors. Throughput medians are identical to three digits on the post-4k cells (280k).

Not covered by this run: package micro-benchmarks on amd64 (the workflow has no package-benchmark mode); the arm64 numbers in the PR body stand (BenchmarkCheckTimeouts888 and the detached-sweep cost).

Invalidate the acknowledgement baseline when TCP_INFO sampling fails.

When GetsockoptTCPInfo fails after closeAckedKnown is established, noteClosingAcked leaves the old baseline valid. If that failed sample occurs after WriteTimeout, detachedStalled skips its no-evidence guard and closes the connection. The peer may have acknowledged bytes since the previous successful sample.

The tcp_wmem skip removes both regression tests, and CI does not notice it.

burstFor888 runs at the top of TestNonReadingClientEndsStream888 (when the prods slice is built) and of each subtest of TestSlowReadingClientKeepsStream888. If a runner's tcp_wmem max is over 12 MiB, the burst exceeds 24 MiB and t.Skipf fires. The skip removes every cell: epoll, io_uring, adaptive and std. The job still reports green, but the celeris#888 regression did not run. The path instructions require a CELERIS_REQUIRE_* switch, or a tally, for a skip like this one. Make the skip fail when a require variable is set, or cap the burst and keep the test.

Set the variable in the Linux CI job.

As per path instructions: "A SKIP is never a PASS. A test that can skip in CI ... needs a CELERIS_REQUIRE_* switch or a CI tally that fails when it does not run."

An SSE client and a WebSocket peer that read nothing, on epoll, io_uring and

each engine against a loopback TCP pair. The non-reading cases fail on main: a
detached conn is exempt from WriteTimeout.

* epoll, iouring: a detached conn whose peer takes none of its queued bytes for WriteTimeout is closed (v1.6.0 polish items)

* iouring: a benchmark of the checkTimeouts sweep, attached and detached-idle conns (RULE 74 for the detached stall bound)

Refs #884 item 66
Refs #888 items 36, 37

* test/server: server1029 starts through the io_uring-ENOMEM retry (the Unit job's 8 MiB memlock, held by another package's rings) (v1.6.0 polish items)

Refs #890 item 55
Refs #884 item 66

* iouring: the sweep reads a detached conn's send state in its own look, not in the snapshot the recv and dispatch paths share (RULE 74; v1.6.0 polish items)

Refs #884 item 66
Refs #888 items 36, 37

* test/server: server1029's comment says only what the CI log shows (v1.6.0 polish items)

Refs #890 item 55

* iouring: every SEND of a truly-detached conn is watched, the first stall sample met late is a baseline, a stall close skips the closing drain, the stall look has a rate limit (review round 1 of #1077; Refs #888 items 38, 39; Refs #884 item 69)

* epoll, sse, websocket: checklist item numbers, ClientPolicyClose can end a stalled stream earlier, no minimum rate, h2c not covered yet, tcp_info comments (review round 1 of #1077; Refs #888 items 38, 39; Refs #884 item 69)

* iouring: a benchmark of markLongSend on the send path; the completeSend benchmark's comment says a load and a branch (review round 1 of #1077; Refs #888 items 38, 39)

* config, sse: the disconnect comes WriteTimeout after the last byte the client took, plus the engine's sweep interval (review round 1 of #1077; Refs #888 items 38, 39)

* iouring: the drain-clock test compares closingDrainBound as it is (unconvert; review round 1 of #1077)

* config, sse, iouring: the stall close comes between 3/4 and 5/4 of WriteTimeout after the last byte plus the sweep interval; a stalled conn's closing sample keeps the stall's baseline (review round 1 of #1077; Refs #888 items 38, 39)
