Limit the guarantee to writes made while closing.
If a SEND is already in flight when UnregisterConn runs, it can still complete. The statement that “no further bytes are sent” promises that earlier accepted writes also stop. State instead that Write rejects new data once the connection is closing. (man7.org)

Merging with every required check green (Build, Conformance, Driver Conformance, Lint, Unit, Vulnerability Check). The advisory items are not code results: "CodSpeed Macro Runners" reports action_required because the org's 600 Macro Runner minutes are used up until 2026-10-31, and the "Benchmarks (arm64 macro runner)" job has no runner. Neither is a required check. |

io_uring
Worker.Writeon a closing driver conn returnsengine.ErrUnknownFD, as epoll does, andWorkerLoop.Writesays so (v1.6.0 polish item). A behaviour change (the maintainer adopted it on 2026-10-19); separate from the other io_uring driver items on purpose. Linux only for the test (build tag linux);provider.gois documentation.Refs #884 item 54 (
Worker.Write, thedc.closingbranch returns nil and drops the bytes; unchecked-box count, the convention of #1056)Decision
Decided by the maintainer on 2026-10-19: adopt
ErrUnknownFD(parity with epoll). #884 item 54 asked whether aWriteon a closing io_uring driver conn should returnErrUnknownFDor a closing error, or whether to state "nil, bytes dropped" in the doc; the answer isErrUnknownFD, with no separate closing error. The in-tree callers mostly treat any Write error as a failed write: redisexec/exec2/exec3close the conn with the error, memcached'swriteAndEnqueueand postgres'swriteRawreturn it. Two places readErrUnknownFDas teardown, the direction this change takes:driver/postgres/conn.go(Close) swallows it from the Terminate write and fromUnregisterConn(celeris#887), anddriver/redis/pubsub.gomaps it toErrPubSubConnDown. That is what they already get from epoll and the standalone loop.User-visible change (release note)
On the io_uring engine, a driver
Writeon a conn that is closing (afterUnregisterConn, or after the conn failed) now returnsErrUnknownFDinstead of nil. redisexec/exec2/exec3and memcachedwriteAndEnqueue, which used to get nil and then waited for onClose or the context, now get the error and close the conn with it (better than the hang).redisConn.closeWithErrstores its error unconditionally (the last write wins), so a later command can reportErrUnknownFDin place of the original failure cause. epoll already behaves this way, so this is parity, not a regression. For driver authors (contract)
WorkerLoop.Writehas one answer for a conn that is gone or going, on every engine worker:engine.ErrUnknownFD, for an fd that is not registered on the worker, or is registered but closing (afterUnregisterConn, or after the conn failed). No further bytes are sent for it. Before this PR the io_uring worker returned nil and dropped the bytes in the closing window; epoll already returnedErrUnknownFD. The standalone driver loop answersErrLoopClosedonce the loop itself is closed, andErrUnknownFDfor a closing conn. A driver that races its own close should treatErrUnknownFDfromWriteas "the conn is closed" (not as a bug, not as a retryable error) and not wait on onClose for a write it was told failed. A Write that returns nil is still not a delivery guarantee: it only means the bytes were queued. The contract is stated in theWorkerLoop.Writegodoc and in theErrUnknownFDdoc ininternal/engine/provider.go.What changed
internal/engine/iouring/driver.go: inWorker.Write, thedc.closingbranch returnsengine.ErrUnknownFDinstead of nil. Before: success reported, bytes dropped (the SEND uses the engine's dup, so the bytes could not reach another socket: this is a semantic gap, not a redis: a PubSub control write that races PubSub.Close goes by descriptor number to the conn that has taken the closed descriptor #929-class hazard). The branch covers the window between the unregister or the failure andfinalizeDriver;finalizeDriverdeletes the conn from the map before the engine's descriptor is closed and before onClose runs (celeris#763 item 2: onClose is no longer tied to the map removal), so a Write after that misses the lookup and gets the same answer. The same window means a newRegisterConnon the same number can succeed before the old onClose fires; that was already so.. Only the return value of that branch changes; the enqueue path below it is untouched.internal/engine/provider.go: theWorkerLoop.Writedoc says it returnsErrUnknownFDfor an fd not registered on the worker or already closing (afterUnregisterConnor after the conn failed), on the engines' workers (the standalone driver loop answersErrLoopClosedonce it is closed). Two stale comments indriver.go(retire, shutdownDrivers) that said a later Write is a no-op now say it fails withErrUnknownFD. Read-only check of epoll: itsLoop.WritereturnsErrUnknownFDwhendc.closed, whichUnregisterConnand both error paths set.TestDriverWriteAfterUnregisterReturnsErrUnknownFD884(new filedriver_write_closing_884_linux_test.go; named in thenewlist of ci.yml's 'celeris#691 io_uring driver tests' step, with its prose): the worker is parked, soUnregisterConnis queued and the conn is still in the map, in its closing state, whenWriteis called;Writemust returnErrUnknownFD; after the release the peer reads EOF (the refused bytes were not sent) and a Write on the finalized number also returnsErrUnknownFD.Evidence after the rebase onto main aa93b61 (head 9f8543e; arm64 linux, golang:1.27.2 in Docker,

Resolved by taking main's three lines and appendingTestDriverWriteAfterUnregisterReturnsErrUnknownFD884tonew; the prose count there now says 20 innew. The Go files auto-merged and were re-read:finalizeDriverstill deletes the conn from the map before the descriptor close and onClose, and every epoll path that closes a driver conn still setsdc.closed, so the docs stay true.Write on a closing conn = <nil>, want engine.ErrUnknownFD(failing-first-main.log).ctl-revert-to-nil.log,ctl-drop-the-check.log).-race -count=5, andgo vetof./internal/engine/ ./internal/engine/iouring/ ./internal/engine/epoll/ ./driver/internal/eventloop/ ./internal/adaptive/is clean (fixed-test.log).ci-step-x5.log).go test -race -count=1of./internal/engine/ ./internal/engine/iouring/ ./driver/internal/eventloop/: all ok (pkgs.log)../internal/engine/... ./driver/internal/eventloop/): 0 new issues against origin/main (--new-from-rev); three errcheck hits sit in eventloop test files this PR does not touch.Evidence before the rebase (head 8ed0b06 on main a1fcd97; lane dir

It is an HTTP handoff load test that does not call driver Write; 8 of 8 passes afterwards on this branch and 8 of 8 on main (logs/flake-handoff-wt2.log,logs/flake-handoff-wt-main.log). Not the memlock signature of the v1.6.0 polish: CI and tests #890 item on that test. Flagged for the orchestrator, not fixed here.RULE 74
No HTTP hot path is touched, and no benchmark of
internal/engine/iouringdrivesWorker.Write(the Write benchmarks underdriver/internal/eventloopare the standalone loop's). The change is the return value of the closing branch; the enqueue path (lock, cap check, append, action) is byte-for-byte the same, so no A/B was run; if you want one, it needs a new io_uringWritebenchmark first. amd64 native timing is OWED either way.Open points
Worker.Write(no io_uring Write benchmark exists; the only changed instruction is the return value of the closing branch, which the normal path never takes, but that is an argument, not a measurement).TestShutdownEndsOwedOpsBeforeClosing(fd_lifetime_close_test.go:304, 1 of 8 server-side descriptors still open after shutdown), an HTTP descriptor-lifetime test that does not call driver Write; 60 of 60 passes of it under-raceon this branch and on main aa93b61 in the arm64 container (logs/flake-branch.log,logs/flake-main.log), and it passed on attempt 2. Flagged as a flake for the orchestrator, not fixed here. The earlier heads 54ac82c, 97ff862 and 8ed0b06 were green before the rebase.ErrUnknownFDvar, epollLoop.Write, the standalone loop'sworker.Write) that now say what Write returns on a closing conn; no behaviour change in it.
