test(vectors): vendor file-backend.json 1.2.0 and python-frame.json (LAB-8444) - #158
Conversation
Re-vendor protocol's file-backend.json (1.1.0 -> 1.2.0) byte for byte and run its 12 vectors through read_entry, probe_header and, for the five a version-1 writer can produce, write_entry. The new expired entries with an unknown flag or reserved value read as a miss and stay byte-identical. Vendor python-frame.json for the first time. Every CK-prefixed vector is refused by both decoders and by get and interop_get. The bare ByteStorage envelope is one well-formed MessagePack document and decodes; the test records that outcome instead of asserting a refusal no structural check can make.

Summary by CodeRabbit
WalkthroughThe pull request updates File backend protocol vectors to version 1.2.0 and adds Python frame vectors. It adds tests for File backend vector handling and for CK frame, bare-envelope, and deserialiser behaviour across both cache read methods. ChangesFile backend vectors

- Line 303: Clarify the release scope of the decoding guarantees in the README
paragraph: state that version 0.10.0 ignores trailing bytes in auto-mode reads,
while trailing-byte rejection and the stated CK-frame refusal behavior require
an unreleased version. Keep the existing guarantees otherwise unchanged.

…ad helper Move read_every_path and decode_both into tests/common so the decode-bounds and python-frame tests drive the same paths, interop_get_swr included. The CK-frame sweep now requires the trailing-bytes refusal on the auto-mode paths and the CK-frame refusal on the interop paths, for all 16 frames, replacing the single named-vector test. The bare-envelope test also pins that the envelope does not decode as the value it wraps, and that a target shaped like the envelope does. README scopes the CK-frame claim to a client without encryption and names the File backend's read paths.

Vendors two protocol fixtures from

The newunknown_flag_expiredandreserved_nonzero_expiredentries read as a miss on both paths and the file stays byte-identical, becauseparse_headerchecks reserved and flags before expiry. A new test also writes the five vectors a version-1 writer can produce (no flag, reserved 0) throughwrite_entryand checks the file name and every byte, sobinary_payloadandempty_payloadpin the writer as well as the reader.python-frame.json(first vendor)sha256

Each case runs through both decoders (serializer::deserialize,interop::deserialize) and every client read (get,interop_get,interop_get_swr) on a client without encryption, via aread_every_pathhelper now shared withdecode_bounds_tests.rsintests/common.ck_frame_fed_to_interop_readeramong them, are refused on every path for the right reason: the auto-mode paths by the trailing bytes, the interop paths by naming the CK frame. An encrypting client refuses them earlier, at decrypt; these vectors do not exercise that.bare_envelope_fed_to_frame_readeris not refused. A bare ByteStorage envelope is one well-formed MessagePack document, so no structural check can refuse it, and this reader decodes it intoIgnoredAny. The test records that, and pins what callers rely on: the envelope does not decode as the value it wraps ({user_id, name, active}). It also pins the edge: rmp-serde decodes by position, so a target whose four elements line up with the envelope's does read it.plain_msgpack_fed_to_frame_readeris this SDK's own storage format, so it is not driven here.Release status of the auto-mode refusal: no published release has it. crates.io
cachekit-rs0.10.0 ignores trailing bytes in auto mode, so 0.10.0'sgetreads a CK frame as the integer 67. The refusal is onmainfrom cachekit-io/cachekit-rs#140, and the open release PR cachekit-io/cachekit-rs#144 would ship it in 0.11.0. Interop mode refuses a CK frame in 0.10.0 too.Temporal sentinels:
wire-format.jsonnot vendoredcachekit-rs revives no temporal sentinel, in 0.10.0 or on
main. The onlywire-format.jsongroup that binds this SDK istemporal_sentinel_vectors, and here it could run only as an expected failure. Vendoring the 122 KB file for that would pin nothing this SDK implements. It would also make the protocol coverage report show the temporal rule as partly covered for an SDK that does not meet it. The protocol's feature matrix keeps that row as ❌. Vendor the file when revival lands.Verification
cargo fmt --check,cargo clippy --all-targets(CI feature set,-D warnings) andcargo test(CI feature set) pass locally. Mutation checks: with the trailing-bytes check disabled, the CK-frame sweep fails in auto mode; with the interop CK-prefix check disabled, it fails on the interop paths (wrong reason); with expiry checked before flags, both file-backend vector tests fail on the new expired entries.
