Summary

  • Add roxie update command that downloads and installs the latest release from GitHub, replacing the current binary in-place
  • Uses creativeprojects/go-selfupdate with SHA-256 checksum verification against checksums.txt
  • Guards against running on dev builds

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an update command to check for and install the latest available release.
    • The command verifies the release before installation and reports when the current version is already up to date.
    • Development builds cannot be updated with this command.

Walkthrough

The root Cobra command now registers an update command. The command checks for a newer GitHub release, validates it with checksums.txt, and updates the current executable when needed.

Changes: Release update

Layer / File(s) Summary
Register and run the update command
go.mod, cmd/main.go, cmd/update.go
The root command registers update. The command rejects development builds, checks the latest release and its checksum, and skips installation when the release is not newer. Otherwise, it updates the current executable. Errors include context.

Updating certain builds can fail, and updating through a symlink can leave the installed target unchanged. These are bounded cases, but both should be fixed before relying on self-update in those installations.

Reject non-semver build versions before calling LessOrEqual.

Release.LessOrEqual calls semver.MustParse(other). A non-"dev" version that is not valid semver can therefore panic at the comparison instead of returning a clear error. Makefile can pass raw git describe --tags --always --dirty output to version.

Resolve symlinks before you replace the executable.

os.Executable() can return the symlink path on some operating systems. The Go documentation states this. If the user starts roxie through a symlink, UpdateTo can replace the symlink with a regular file. The real binary stays old. A package-manager-managed install can break.

Resolve the path with filepath.EvalSymlinks before the call to UpdateTo. Add path/filepath to the imports.
