Summary

A go.mod lists the modules of a build, but not which module imports which. vet needs those edges to say that no code imports a Go module (unused), to show "imported via X", and to check that no other module can call a vulnerable one before not-called. Today vet has no graph for Go, so each of these stops at no-graph.

The new package modgraph builds the graph from the code on the disk. It runs no go command, opens no network connection and builds with CGO_ENABLED=0.

  • modgraph.Build reads the import blocks of the Go files with go/parser in ImportsOnly mode. It starts at the packages of the main module, its tests too, and reads each package that an import reaches, as go list -deps does.
  • modgraph.Discover finds each source as the go command builds it: vendor at the version of go.mod, then a local replace directory inside LocalRoot, then the module cache, then the .mod file of the cache.
  • Graph.Path and Graph.Reaches answer "can one of these modules reach that one".
  • examples/modgraph prints the graph of a module. docs/modgraph.md holds the rules.

The rule

The graph may hold an edge that a build does not have. It never misses an edge that a build has, for any platform or tag set. A module whose imports Build cannot read is open: it can import any module.

  • A file counts unless its build constraint can never hold, with every tag free except ignore. The constraint is read as go/build reads it.
  • The resolver tests the modules whose path is a prefix of an import, longest first. A module with no source may hold the package, so it gets an edge too. A module path is tested before the standard library.
  • A module with only a .mod file is open. A dependency's go.mod need not list each module that its code imports, because the main go.mod can give it as // indirect. So a .mod file is evidence of an edge, never of its absence. Only source on the disk supports unused and not-called, which is why vet will tell users to run go mod download first.
  • A module with no data, an import that no module holds, a file that does not parse and the end of the file budget make a module open. Once a reached node is open, each node is reached.
  • A main go.mod before go 1.17 gives ErrUnpruned.

The cache keeps the imports of each package of the module cache in the store, by the module that the source holds, its version, the directory and the go.sum hash. It never keeps a package that Build could not read in full.

Verification

TestBuildHoldsEachEdgeOfGoList runs go list -deps -test for linux/amd64, darwin/arm64, windows/amd64 and js/wasm. It checks that the graph holds each module edge, or that the edge leaves an open node. It sets GOPROXY=off and skips with no go command or module cache.

Project go list edges (linux/amd64) All in the graph Reached open nodes Cold Build
safedep/code 105 yes 0 0.37 s
safedep/vet 693 yes 0 1.2 s
safedep/vet, vendored 693 yes 0
safedep/control-tower 103 yes some, from an incomplete local module cache 0.8 s

A graph with the golang.org/x edges removed fails the oracle with 630 errors.

Two Fable sub-agent reviews ran: one on the plan and one on the code. The second proved five inputs that missed an edge in the first commit: a link to a file, a link to a directory, a 64 KiB head cut inside the import block, // +build after a block comment, and a cache key shared by a fork and the original. The second commit fixes each one, and each one has a test.

One review item is left as it is: plugin/indexer/gounit.go keeps its own file rule. The indexer rule drops tag-only files and the cmd tree of the standard library, while the graph keeps more files on purpose, so one shared helper would mix two rules.

go test ./..., go vet and golangci-lint run ./... pass.

Next

The vet pull request after this one merges: discover the sources at import level, convert the graph to model.Graph with open nodes, save it in the scan file, check the reach rules, add corpus and acceptance cases, and document go mod download before a scan.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a way to build and inspect Go module dependency graphs, including text or JSON output and module reachability paths.
    • Module sources can be discovered from local files and caches without running Go commands or downloading modules. Graphs may include extra edges when imports cannot be resolved.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on graph behavior, source discovery, limitations, and build constraints.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for graph construction, source discovery, output formats, and comparisons with Go’s dependency listings.

A go.mod lists the modules of a build, but not which module imports
which. Without the edges, a caller such as vet cannot tell that no code
imports a module, or that no other module can call a vulnerable one.

modgraph.Build reads the import blocks of the Go files on the disk, with
go/parser in ImportsOnly mode. It starts at the packages of the main
module, its tests too, and reads each package that an import reaches, as
go list -deps does. It runs no go command, opens no network connection
and needs no CGO.

The graph may hold an edge that a build does not have, and it never
misses one that a build has:

- A file counts unless its build constraint can never hold, with every
  tag free except ignore.
- The resolver tests the modules whose path is a prefix of an import,
longest first. A module with no source may hold the package, so it
gets an edge too. A module path is tested before the standard library.
- A module with no source and only a go.mod is open, because its go.mod
need not list each module that its code imports. Its require lines
  stay as evidence.
- A module with no source and no go.mod, an import that no module holds,
a file that does not parse and the end of the file budget make a
module open. Once a reached node is open, each node is reached.
- A main go.mod before go 1.17 gives ErrUnpruned.

modgraph.Discover finds each source as the go command builds it: a
replace target, then vendor at the version of go.mod, then the module
cache, then the .mod file of the cache. It reads a local replacement
only inside LocalRoot. Build caches the imports of each package of the
module cache in the store, by module, version, directory and go.sum
hash, and never caches a package that it could not read in full.

TestBuildHoldsEachEdgeOfGoList runs go list -deps -test for four
platforms and checks that the graph holds each module edge. On this
repository and on safedep/vet, with and without vendor, the graph holds
each edge and no reached node is open. A graph with the golang.org/x
edges removed fails it with 630 errors. examples/modgraph prints the
graph of a module, and docs/modgraph.md describes the rules.

A Fable review proved five inputs where Build missed an edge of a real
build, and left the node at imports. Each one now has a test.

- A link to a .go file did not count. The go command reads it. Build
now reads a link to a regular file as a file of its package.
- A package of the main module behind a link to a directory was
dropped, because the walk of the main module does not follow links
and enqueue refused each main package. The walk now marks the
packages that it read, and an import queues any other one.
- A 64 KiB head that ends inside a comment between two imports, or
inside the word import, parsed and was taken as the whole import
block. Build now takes a head only when a token that is not import
ends inside it after the last import. Else it reads the whole file.
- A // +build line after a /* */ comment excluded a file that the go
command builds. excluded is now go/build parseFileHeader and
shouldBuild. A //go:build line in the doc comment now counts, as it
  does for the go command.
- The cache keyed a package by the build list module, so a fork that
replaces a module could read the imports of the original. The key
is now Source.Origin, the module that the source holds, and Discover
  sets it.

Other changes from the review:

- An import of a testdata, _ or . directory reaches a package, as the
go command builds it. Only vendor and a nested module are refused.
- Discover reads vendor before a local replacement, as vendor mode
does, and resolves links before it checks LocalRoot.
- Node.Walked is new. Graph.Path and Graph.Reaches take a set of start
modules, treat a module that Build did not walk as open, and share
  one index.
- Stats.Packages counts only directories with a Go file. The evidence
of an edge that a test file gave first moves to the import that
clears TestOnly. IsStdPath comes from projectgraph/modules.
- The oracle test requires the node of each edge of go list.

With the head check, a cold Build reads safedep/vet in 1.2 s, as
before. The oracle still finds each edge of go list on this
repository, safedep/vet and safedep/control-tower.

The graph can miss dependencies in supported edge cases, and local replacements can read beyond the configured root through links. Constraint evaluation can also become expensive. Resolve these issues before merging; the example and validation tests need smaller corrections as well.

The resolver took a module whose package directory had no Go file. The
go command takes the next shorter prefix in that case. The resolver now
needs an entry that ends in .go and is a file or a link to a file, as
IsDirWithGoFiles does.

An open node can import any package of the build list. Build now reads
each package of each module with source once a reached node is open.
Before this, a module with one read package hid the edges of its other
packages. The sweep skips a package that does not parse or that imports
a module outside the build list, because no build of the project reads
it.

The resolver looks up the prefixes of the import path in a map. Build of
vet takes 0.9 s, down from 1.7 s.

Assert reachability for the edge source.

The oracle checks to.Reached, but it does not check from.Reached. A traversal regression can leave the source unreached while another path reaches the destination. The oracle can then pass.

Reject a main module path of std in Build.

Build accepts a main go.mod that declares module std. When a file in the main module imports a standard-library package such as fmt, link calls stdNode. stdNode then writes b.byPath[StdPath], which replaces the main module entry that newBuilder stored under the same key.

As a result:

  • Graph.Nodes has no node for the main module. The synthetic standard-library node takes its place under the path std.
  • Graph.Main.Path is std.
  • The graph gets a self-loop edge std -> std.
  • If the main module becomes open, that state is not written to Graph.Nodes.

newBuilder rejects StdPath for build list entries. Build does not apply the same rule to the main module path.

A link inside a local replacement could lead Build out of LocalRoot.
Each read of a local replacement now resolves its links again. A link
that leads out of LocalRoot makes the module open.

A dependency of many files with unsatisfiable constraints of 16 tags
cost 2^16 tests per file. One Build now tests at most 4,194,304 tag
sets. Past that, each constraint counts as one that can hold.

The oracle test now fails when an edge of go list leaves a module with
no source, and when go list resolves no module for an import of this
repository. Both cases let the test pass with nothing compared.

The docs example checks each error.

A cache entry of {} decoded as a package with no imports, so Build
skipped the source and lost its edges. An entry with no imports field is
now a miss, and Build writes [] for a package with no imports.

A main module with the path std took the key of the standard library
node. Build now refuses it, as it refuses std in the build list.

The oracle test also checks that the module that an edge leaves is
reached, and that the cache gives the same nodes. The example test
decodes the JSON graph.

* [FOU-586] Read the Go module graph of a go.mod from the code on the disk

A go.mod lists the modules of a build, but not which module imports
which. So each Go vulnerability finding of a module that the code does
not import stayed unknown with the cause no-graph. vet could not say
unused or imported via X, and could not prove not-called.

The codeusage enricher now builds the graph of each go.mod with
safedep/code modgraph. modgraph reads the import blocks of the Go files
of the main module and of each module of the build list in vendor, in a
local replacement inside the target or in the module cache. It runs no
go command and downloads nothing. The engine asks a new
plugin.Grapher for the graph of a manifest with none, during the
extraction, and stores it with the manifest.

A module with no source on the disk is open: it may import any module.
model.Graph keeps the open nodes, and the scan file stores them. The
reach rules read them: a path of known edges gives imported via X, a
path that only an open module gives is unknown with the cause
no-dependency-source, and no path is unused. One diagnostic counts the
open modules and says to run go mod download.

Scalibr lists the target of a replace directive in place of the module.
The go.mod extractor now records the module that it replaces, as
Package.Replaces. The code usage and the graph map a replaced module by
it, so its imports count.

vet builds no graph for a module that a go.work uses, or for a go.mod
below go 1.17. Its findings keep no-graph.

* [FOU-586] Take imports from the roots of the Go module graph

A review of the Go module graph found false unused results. The reach
rules took the imported packages from the code usage, which covers the
whole target and skips the build, target and dist directories. So a
module that only a skipped directory imports read as unused. A module
that only another go.mod of the target imports gave paths into this
go.mod. The standard library has no import path, so it read as unused.

The module graph of a go.mod now marks itself as a graph of imports, and
the scan file keeps the mark. For such a graph the reach rules take the
imported packages from its roots, which are the imports of the code of
that module. The standard library is always imported.

A reached module that maps to no package of the manifest hid its
imports, for example when two replace directives name one target. Now
that module gives no graph. vet also reads GOWORK as the go command
does.

* [FOU-586] Resolve links in GOWORK and refuse a relative GOWORK

A review found two inputs that gave a module graph for a module of a
workspace. vet compared a use path in the spelling of GOWORK with the
canonical scan root, so a GOWORK through a link never matched the module.
On macOS each target under /tmp or /var is such a link. vet also read a
relative GOWORK from its own directory, but the go command refuses a
relative GOWORK.

vet now resolves the links of both paths before it compares them. A
relative GOWORK counts as a workspace that holds the module, so the
module gets no graph. The docs say that vet does not read a GOWORK
that go env -w sets.

* [FOU-586] Find a go.work above the scan root and bump codeusage

The search for a go.work stopped at the scan root. The go command
searches each parent directory, so a scan of one module of a workspace
missed the workspace and built a graph from go.mod alone. That graph can
give a false unused. The search now goes up to the root of the file
system. A go.work outside the scan root is named by its full path.

The mapping of a replaced Go module changed the data of the codeusage
enricher, so its Version goes from 11 to 12.

* [FOU-586] docs: Say that the module graph runs no build

The doc comment of Graph said that it runs no go command. To find the
module cache, vet can run go env once for each process. The comment now
says that the graph runs no build and downloads nothing, as
docs/output.md says.

* [FOU-588] Build the Go module graph of a go.work workspace (#843)

* [FOU-588] Build the Go module graph of a go.work workspace

vet built no module graph for a module that a go.work workspace uses,
because the go command builds such a module with the build list of the
workspace, and no single go.mod holds it. So each Go finding of a
workspace stayed unknown with no graph. vet itself is such a workspace.

vet now passes the go.work that it finds to modgraph, which gives the
build list of the workspace. Another module of the workspace is local
code, so it passes its imports on. A module that only the workspace adds
is no package of this go.mod, and it passes its imports on too. A
reached module that go.mod requires and that maps to no package still
gives no graph. A relative GOWORK gives no graph, because the go command
refuses it.

* [FOU-588] Pin safedep/code to the fixed head of claude/go-work-graph

A review of safedep/code#56 found six inputs where the build list of a
workspace differed from the go command. The fixed head follows
readModGraph and the vendor rules of the go command.

* [FOU-588] Pin safedep/code to the head of main

* [FOU-588] Add an acceptance script for a workspace with no graph

docs/output.md says that vet builds no module graph for a workspace
whose build list it cannot know, and that its findings keep unknown with
the cause no-graph. No acceptance script held that guarantee. The new
script covers a go.mod of the build list that is not on the disk, a
workspace module outside the target, and an exclude directive.
