test(core): capture how the serve request handler serves static files (AI-assisted) - #12858
The docusaurus serve request handler had no tests. Before changing how it serves files (aligning with GitHub Pages, Netlify and Vercel in a follow-up PR), this PR captures the current behavior of createServeRequestHandler() exhaustively. It only adds tests: no behavior change.
The handler serves a fixture static deployment that extends the one of the trailing-slash-guide: file.html, folder/index.html, both.html + both/index.html, docs/2.x/index.html, plus 404.html, assets with extensions of 1 to 11 characters (.c, .pdf, .jpeg, .woff2, .webmanifest), and file names with a space and non-ASCII characters. Each fixture file contains its own path, so the tests know which file was served.
One snapshot table per baseUrl (/, /base/) and trailingSlash (undefined, true, false), one line per request, following the redirects:
The follow-up PR can change behaviors TDD-style by editing these rows, and replace serve-handler without touching the test helpers.
Known bugs have their own tests, which assert the current buggy behavior with a TODO describing the fix. The implementation keeps the bugs for now:
Latin-1 file names like café.html crash the whole server process with ERR_INVALID_CHAR (Problems with UTF characters vercel/serve-handler#205). The test server catches the rejection, so the test can't crash Vitest.
serve-handler redirects drop the baseUrl, so /base/file.html ends up on the homepage.
serve-handler redirects drop the query string: /file.html?query=1 → /file.
Folders with a dot in their name, like the docs version docs/2.x/index.html or the blog post blog/releases/3.0/index.html, always 404: serve-handler doesn't look for the index.html of paths with an extension. Docusaurus builds these folders when trailingSlash is undefined (the default) or true. Reproduced on a real site build: trailingSlash: false builds docs/2.x.html files instead, which are served.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The pull request adds fixture-backed integration tests for serve request handling. The tests record responses and redirects for different base URLs, trailing-slash settings, and request paths. They also capture several known behaviors.

Catch rejections from the request handler in serve.ts.
A request whose path makes serve-handler reject, such as /café for a café.html build file, rejects the promise returned by the handler. http.createServer does not catch it. The process-level unhandledRejection handler in bin/docusaurus.mjs logs the error and calls process.exit(1), so one request stops the server.

Compare the base path in its encoded form before matching.
Browsers percent-encode non-ASCII paths, but req.url.startsWith(baseUrl) compares against the raw baseUrl. For /文档/, the request /%E6%96%87%E6%A1%A3/ fails this check. The redirect then sends the raw value in Location. Node rejects that header value, so the request receives no response.

Resolve the --dir mismatch between code and docs.
serve resolves --dir against the site directory. For serve docs --dir dist, it serves docs/dist. The --dir help text and website/docs/cli.mdx say the path is relative to the current workspace. This predates the PR. Correct either the docs or the resolution. A change to the resolution also affects build.

Preserve the query string on serve-handler redirects.
serveHandler drops the query string when it redirects a clean URL (/file.html?x=1 to /file) or applies trailingSlash. Pages that read window.location.search lose that state after the redirect. For example, inlineScripts.ts reads the docusaurus-theme query parameter. Add the query to the redirect target in this wrapper.

packages/docusaurus/src/commands/serve/requestHandler.ts:60-65 Minor · Functional Correctness · Heavy lift
Restore baseUrl in redirects that serveHandler emits.
For /base/file.html, serveHandler receives /file.html and returns Location: /file. Following that location is outside baseUrl, so the handler redirects to /base/, which serves index.html. Missing .html paths under a non-root baseUrl can reach the homepage the same way. Restore the baseUrl prefix on these redirects, or stop relying on serveHandler for clean-URL redirects.

Clean URLs without .html, such as /base/file, serve correctly. The defect affects .html requests under a non-root baseUrl.

Minor · Strip the query and hash before the asset check. · requestHandler.ts:18-25
packages/docusaurus/src/commands/serve/requestHandler.ts:18-25 Minor · Functional Correctness · Heavy lift
Strip the query and hash before the asset check.
The asset check runs on the full URL, so ?v=1 hides the extension. Extensions over four characters, such as .webmanifest, also fail. With a non-root baseUrl and trailingSlash: true, applyTrailingSlash then adds / before the query. The 302 target cannot be served as a file. Test the pathname only, and decide how to classify long extensions.
Correction scope
The safe fix must cover both the query-string case and long extensions. The query-only change does not fix .webmanifest or .woff2. The extension rule needs a decision, so this comment gives no edit.

Update the asset check in createServeRequestHandler to classify the URL pathname

Add a test that fails when serve starts the server before build resolves.
The --build test uses an immediate build mock and asserts only its call arguments. Removing the await before build in serve.ts leaves every test passing. The fixture build/ directory already contains servable files, so an early server still responds.
Add a deferred build mock inside a new test. Keep the override local to that test so the existing --build test still completes.
Clear recorded build calls before the new test runs. A call from an earlier test must not satisfy the check.
Make the mocked build return a promise that only the test resolves.
Start serve without awaiting it. Wait for build to be called. Then wait for the asynchronous work that follows, such as the host-port lookup. A check made immediately after the build call can run before that work reaches server creation.
After that wait, assert that http.createServer has not been called.
Resolve the deferred build in a finally block. Then await the serve promise. Close any server it created, even when an assertion fails or serve rejects. Without the release, serve stays pending.

Add a test around the `--build` behavior in `serve` that uses a locally scoped

The build test uses the default output directory. The --dir test does not enable build. A change that passes the default build directory to build() while serving a custom --dir would pass both tests. The combined case is not covered. The build mock records the call, so a test can check it directly.

The test file keeps the request paths and the test cases only.
describeServing() receives the request paths as an argument.

Motivation
The
docusaurus serverequest handler had no tests. Before changing how it serves files (aligning with GitHub Pages, Netlify and Vercel in a follow-up PR), this PR captures the current behavior ofcreateServeRequestHandler()exhaustively. It only adds tests: no behavior change. The handler serves a fixture static deployment that extends the one of the trailing-slash-guide:
file.html,folder/index.html,both.html+both/index.html,docs/2.x/index.html, plus404.html, assets with extensions of 1 to 11 characters (.c,.pdf,.jpeg,.woff2,.webmanifest), and file names with a space and non-ASCII characters. Each fixture file contains its own path, so the tests know which file was served. One snapshot table per
baseUrl(/,/base/) andtrailingSlash(undefined, true, false), one line per request, following the redirects:The follow-up PR can change behaviors TDD-style by editing these rows, and replace serve-handler without touching the test helpers.
Known bugs have their own tests, which assert the current buggy behavior with a
TODOdescribing the fix. The implementation keeps the bugs for now:café.htmlcrash the whole server process withERR_INVALID_CHAR(Problems with UTF characters vercel/serve-handler#205). The test server catches the rejection, so the test can't crash Vitest.baseUrl, so/base/file.htmlends up on the homepage./file.html?query=1→/file.docs/2.x/index.htmlor the blog postblog/releases/3.0/index.html, always 404: serve-handler doesn't look for theindex.htmlof paths with an extension. Docusaurus builds these folders whentrailingSlashisundefined(the default) ortrue. Reproduced on a real site build:trailingSlash: falsebuildsdocs/2.x.htmlfiles instead, which are served.baseUrlandtrailingSlash: true, assets with a query string (styles.css?v=1) or an extension longer than 4 characters (font.woff2,site.webmanifest) get a trailing slash and 404 (Windows serves them): thelooksLikeAssetregex misses them. Fixed by fix(core):docusaurus serveno longer adds a trailing slash to some assets under a baseUrl (AI-assisted) #12877.Other behaviors to review in the follow-up PR
.htmlfiles are redirected to their clean URL (/file.html→/file), even for routes that really end with.html./folder/index.html→/folder/index→/folder→/folder/./missing.htmlis redirected before getting a 404.trailingSlash: undefined,/file/servesfile.html./styles.css/) are served on Windows, but 404 on other platforms. The tests where it matters capture both platforms.Test Plan
