fix(usersrole): raise the gateway body limit for icon uploads - #321
Conversation
NGINX Gateway Fabric leaves nginx's own client_max_body_size default in place and offers no per-route override through the HTTPRoute, so the gateway rejected every profile icon over 1MB with a 413 the service never saw. Reproduced against the non environment: a 1.5MB POST returned 413 while a 100KB POST reached the app and returned 401. The 413 carries no CORS headers, which is why the browser reported it as a network failure and the upload appeared to fail for no stated reason. 4m sits above the service's own 4MB max-request-size so the service stays the binding limit. The policy lives in this chart rather than in common because this is the only service here that accepts uploads, and NGF only honours a policy in the same namespace as its target. Gateway-level limit that covers this route.

In non, profile-service's HTTPRoute takes /api/profiles, icon uploads included, away from usersrole's catch-all on the shared host. NGF applies the policy attached to the route that matched, so the usersrole policy never reached those requests. An icon over 1MB still got a 413 at the gateway. maxBodySize sits in the base values so prd picks it up the moment its ingress turns on, and prd renders no policy until then. The size is checked at render time against the CRD's own pattern so a bad value fails here rather than at sync. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
NGF's Size accepts up to four digits with an optional k, m or g suffix. A value like 4MB renders cleanly and is then refused by the API server at sync, far from the change that caused it. The template now fails the render instead. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.Move the size-format check into chart schemas.
Both chart templates implement the same
failcheck. Define the constraint in each chart’svalues.schema.jsonand keep the templates focused on rendering. Helm applies chart schemas duringlintandtemplate; this also avoids maintaining two copies of the check. Preserve the currently accepted numeric values when defining the schema. (docs.helm.sh)Based on learnings: “In Helm charts, prefer declarative input validation via values.schema.json … over imperative checks with {{ fail ... }} in templates.”

The policy was gated on maxBodySize being truthy, and a numeric 0 is falsy. To NGF, 0 means "no limit", so setting it silently left the gateway at its 1m default. Both templates now test whether the value is set. An unset, null or empty value still renders no policy. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Why
NGINX Gateway Fabric keeps nginx's 1m
client_max_body_sizedefault and an HTTPRoute can't override it. So any profile icon over 1MB gets a 413 at the gateway and never reaches usersrole. That 413 has no CORS headers, so the browser shows it as a network error. This adds aClientSettingsPolicyon the usersrole HTTPRoute that raises the body limit to4m(ingress.maxBodySize). The paired service change in jdwlabs/apps#261 raises Spring'smax-request-sizeto 4MB, so the service stays the limit that actually applies.Cherry-picked from
d59c431. TheChart.yamlconflict came from appVersion moving to 1.3.7 on main, and I resolved it toversion: 0.12.0. That's a minor bump because the chart now ships a new resource kind, the same precedent as6c0ece0.Needs attention
charts/profile-service/values-non.yaml(cutover step 1) gives profile-service its own HTTPRoute onusersrole.non.jdwlabs.comwithPathPrefix /api/profiles, which wins/api/profiles/{id}/icon. A policy on the usersrole route never reaches those requests, socharts/profile-servicenow ships its ownClientSettingsPolicy(maxBodySize: 4min base values, chart 0.2.0 -> 0.3.0). prd renders none until its profile-service ingress turns on.apps/backend/profile-service/handlers.gowraps the whole body inhttp.MaxBytesReader(maxUploadBytes = 2 << 20). That's the same file-equals-request ceiling apps#261 fixes in the JVM, so in non a file close to 2MB will still be refused by the service itself (not by the gateway).maxBodySizematches NGF'sSizepattern^\d{1,4}(k|m|g)?$.Risk / rollout
Adds one namespaced
gateway.nginx.org/v1alpha1resource per env. The NGF CRD must already exist on the cluster, which I didn't check against live state. Rollback is a revert.Verified
