iouring: serverFDFor matches both ends of the dialed connection (Refs #1081) - #1083
Conversation
… socket another test left open is not taken for the engine's (Refs #1081) TestShutdownEndsOwedOpsBeforeClosing found each server-side descriptor by its peer alone. A socket an earlier test in the binary left open can name the same peer: its peer port is free for connect(2) again once its listener is gone, and the client is given it. /proc/self/fd lists names in lexical order, so that socket was taken whenever its number sorted first, and the check after shutdown found it still open. serverFDFor now also requires the descriptor's own address to be the server's; the shutdown test fails at once if the descriptor it found closes as it is found.

Register cleanup after stray is dialed.
If the port-reuse dial skips, or any earlier operation fails before dupAbove, stray remains open. Closing strayAccepted and lnX does not close the client socket. Register cleanup immediately after net.Dial succeeds.

Merging with every required check green (Build, Conformance, Driver Conformance, Lint, Unit, Vulnerability Check). The advisory items are not code results: "CodSpeed Macro Runners" reports action_required because the org's 600 Macro Runner minutes are used up until 2026-10-31, and the "Benchmarks (arm64 macro runner)" job has no runner. Neither is a required check. |
…1081) (#1083) * iouring: serverFDFor matches both ends of the dialed connection, so a socket another test left open is not taken for the engine's (Refs #1081) TestShutdownEndsOwedOpsBeforeClosing found each server-side descriptor by its peer alone. * iouring: the serverFDFor and #1081 test comments say the stray CI met was a server side another test kept (Refs #1081)
Refs #1081
What failed
TestShutdownEndsOwedOpsBeforeClosingfailed twice in the Unit steps job: once on PR #1058 (attempt 1) and once on PR #1080 (attempt 1). Both failures saidleft_open=1. Those are 2 of about 374 attempts since 2026-10-13. Every other failed Unit steps job in that window failed for a different reason.Cause: the test picked the wrong descriptor; the engine does not leak
serverFDFortook the first descriptor in/proc/self/fdwhose peer was the test client's address. Earlier tests in the binary leave server-side sockets open. The census in a scratch copy found these strays at the package's c-file to d-file boundary:
closing_kernel_progress_884_linux_test.go). Each one keeps the duplicated server descriptor it gives a hand-built worker. A forced GC does not close it.connect(2)hands a port out again once the client that had it is gone. So a stray can name the new test client's address as its peer./proc/self/fdlists names in lexical order. A stray at "1xx" is therefore found before the engine's socket at "2x". The stray belongs to no engine, so it is still open after shutdown. That fits the rest of the failure line:close_fd_forced=0and a shutdown of about 270 µs.Shutdown closes every fd in
liveConns, plus everypendingReleaseentry that holds its descriptor. The fixed shutdown test still catches a real engine leak, because it now checks the engine's own descriptor.Fix
serverFDFor(local, server)also requires the descriptor's own address to equal the server's.Evidence
TestServerFDForIsTheServerSideOfTheDialedConn1081is deterministic. It forces the collision with a stray of the other kind, a client whose peer port is then given to client B. The stray's peer is client B's address, and it sits at a number that sorts before the real descriptor (stray at "1xx", A's server side at "2xx", B's at "9xxx"). It passes with the fix.go test -race ./internal/engine/iouring/passes at 8 MiB memlock (885 RUN lines, the 9 skips CI allows).go vetpasses, with and without-tags validation. golangci-lint v2.14 reports 0 issues, with and without-tags validation. Not reproduced
The CI failure itself was not reproduced:
Because it could not be reproduced, bisecting by failure rate was not possible. The cause is in the test helper, which has been there since #793.
