Fluent Bit depends on native facilities that are unavailable in browsers. This PR adds an experimental Emscripten build profile and an asynchronous JavaScript SDK that run the engine in workers, ingest application logs, and export through browser Fetch.

The SDK supports start/stop/restart, bounded command admission, configuration assets, opt-in IndexedDB storage, namespace locking, checkpoint recovery, and status counters. Input acceptance is not a remote delivery acknowledgement. Persistent checkpoints require a stopped engine; failed checkpoints block restart until recovery succeeds.

Scope

  • Pin Emscripten 6.0.9 and cross-compile SHA-256-pinned Lua 5.4.9, OpenSSL 3.5.9, and libyaml 0.2.5.
  • Adapt engine lifecycle and the legacy/NG HTTP clients to Fetch, including cancellation and rejection of unsupported browser modes.
  • Add the SDK, TypeScript declarations, browser demo, lifecycle/storage/startup fault tests, and optimized/ASan CI jobs.
  • Preserve terminal SDK states when application callbacks force destruction during start/stop. Drain shutdown logs and remaining pthread workers, then explicitly close the SDK worker after its final reply.
  • Keep compact sparse Lua arrays while treating very large numeric keys as maps. A record containing {[1000000000] = 7} remains small instead of expanding into a billion-element array. Add native and browser regression coverage.

The branch is rebased onto master 6dd3c50e4. Its flb_libco, Monkey, cmetrics, cprofiles, and ctraces trees match that base exactly. The required libco/Monkey browser support is already bundled on master; only ChunkIO browser filesystem changes remain in a separate bundled-library commit. Upstream dependency references: flb_libco #14, Monkey #448, and ChunkIO #116. No Emscripten SDK sources are patched.

Verified AI review follow-up

  • Corrected the editable demo guide to match demoClient.stop() runtime reuse
and demoClient.destroy() worker release, current SDK deadlines, JSON ingestion
and the implemented asynchronous API. Kept the private/experimental/unpublished
caveat. The dependency merge-status paragraph was already accurate and retained.
  • Browser HTTP timeouts above 120 seconds are now capped to 120 instead of
rejecting the request. Negative effective timeouts still fail, zero selects the
existing 30-second default, and a smaller positive network I/O timeout wins.
  • Checkout now sets persist-credentials: false; its pinned action SHA is unchanged.

The timeout regression failed before the fix and passes afterward. All four
focused HTTP CTests and the HTTP-NG Chromium integration smoke test pass in both
optimized and ASan builds, including eight timeout cases. actionlint and full PR
commit-range lint pass. No new ASan/LeakSanitizer diagnostics were found. Valgrind
was not run because this changed adapter executes only inside browser WASM.

Exact focused commands, run once for each of release and asan:

for variant in release asan; do
  ctest --test-dir "/tmp/flb-wasm-review-20261023-$variant" -R '^flb-wasm-http(-ng|-ng-objects|-lifecycle)?$' --output-on-failure
  browser-venv/bin/python tests/wasm/browser_smoke.py --build-dir "/tmp/flb-wasm-review-20261023-$variant" --target flb-wasm-http-ng --browser /home/edsiper/.cache/ms-playwright/chromium-1234/chrome-linux64/chrome
done

Review and experimental artifacts — 2026-10-23

The branch is rebased onto master a41f6d98e. This update fixes both browser
HTTP adapters bypassing master's sticky invalid_header rejection: an ignored
failed header setter now prevents Fetch entirely. The new regression fails
without the fix and passes with it. The browser-only external crypto build is
updated to SHA-256-pinned OpenSSL 3.5.9. Bundled library sources are unchanged.

Emscripten 6.0.13 is the next toolchain candidate (stable since October 19).
The supported/CI pin remains 6.0.9: the local 6.0.11 experiment never passed
the bundled libco version guard. A newer SDK needs an explicit libco compatibility
update and full qualification; no unvalidated pin is included here.

Consumable experimental artifacts: the Browser WebAssembly workflow now runs
on every branch push, every PR update, and manual dispatch. After the optimized
build, CTests and SDK unit tests pass, it uploads
fluent-bit-browser-experimental-<source-commit> for 30 days. Download it from
the Actions run's Artifacts section (or gh run download). It contains a .tar.gz
and archive checksum; the archive includes all browser SDK/runtime assets,
TypeScript declarations, license, per-file checksums and build-info.json with
source/build commit IDs and the toolchain version. Deploy the entire extracted
directory under HTTPS with COOP/COEP. Artifacts are experimental and unsanitized;
subsequent browser checks and the ASan matrix job remain separate gates.

Fresh local verification on Linux/Emscripten 6.0.9/Chromium 151:

  • Optimized 17/17 CTests and ASan 19/19 CTests pass.
  • Real browser SDK, complete HTTPS page and pthread startup-fault suites pass in
both builds: 54 fault cases, retaining the five-second cleanup assertion.
  • 23 Node SDK tests and 15 Python browser-harness tests pass.
  • actionlint 1.7.12, full PR commit-range lint and whitespace checks pass.
  • The exact packaging script runs locally; archive/file checksums verify. The
extracted package passes create/start/push/stats/stop/destroy and worker cleanup.
  • Valgrind was not run for this browser-only update: native integration binaries
cannot execute the Emscripten adapter. Focused browser suites ran with ASan and
LeakSanitizer diagnostics checked; native paths are unchanged.

Outstanding lifecycle blocker: the hosted run of rebased head b2bddb61f
failed because an SDK worker survived the missing-WASM negative path, in addition
to the older ASan delayed-handshake failure. A full local test of the extracted
artifact also stalled on that negative path and was stopped; its separate happy
path smoke test passed. This intermittency is still unresolved despite clean
fresh build-tree runs. Artifact availability does not mean browser/ASan checks
passed or that this is production-ready.
Hosted failure.

See the review and exact verification commands
and artifact consumption instructions.

Validation — 2026-09-30

Linux, Emscripten 6.0.9, Chromium 151, and Valgrind 3.23.0. Native verification used an isolated worktree whose tracked source was checked against the final branch; native and WASM builds did not share generated headers.

  • Optimized WASM: 17/17 CTests passed. ASan WASM: 19/19 CTests passed.
  • Real Chromium SDK and full HTTPS page suites passed in both configurations, including Lua, HTTP/Loki/OTLP, lifecycle reuse, persistent recovery, and teardown.
  • Pthread startup-failure suites passed three times per configuration: 162 fault cases, including 18 delayed-handshake cases, with the original five-second worker-cleanup check retained.
  • 23 Node contract tests, TypeScript 5.9.3 strict consumer check, and 15 Python browser-harness tests passed.
  • Fresh native build: 8/8 focused CTests passed for Lua, SQL, YAML, scheduler, input chunks, engine, backlog, and lib output.
  • Native functional integration: 118 passed, including startup helpers and the new large-key Lua regressions.
  • Native strict-Valgrind integration: 112 passed: 27 Lua cases plus 85 HTTP/stdout/backlog/server cases, with strict memory checks enabled.
  • Lua and SQL unit binaries passed strict Valgrind with zero errors and no remaining allocations.
  • Full PR commit-range prefix lint and whitespace checks pass.

The ASan browser suites reject AddressSanitizer and LeakSanitizer diagnostics. Valgrind verifies native paths; it cannot instrument browser WASM. The system-library Clang job for that historical run encountered a GitHub Server Error during CMake setup, before Fluent Bit configuration.

Native verification commands, from the isolated worktree:

Build and browser commands are documented in the browser guide.

Draft / production gates

The API remains experimental and requires a secure, cross-origin-isolated browser context and trusted application configuration. Outstanding work includes backlog budgets, delivery/drop observability, crash-safe delivery semantics, real quota/eviction/corruption/upgrade tests, Firefox/WebKit/mobile and production CSP/bundler qualification, long-running pressure tests, and release/security processes. Default ASan passes; optional stack-use-after-return still has the documented toolchain cleanup limitation. This draft does not claim production readiness.

A failed SDK startup can leave pthread workers and WASM resources behind. The impact is localized and recoverable, but cleanup should be addressed as follow-up.

Explanation

The title "wasm: add experimental browser runtime and SDK" matches the main change in the changeset. The raw summary adds a browser WebAssembly build profile (FLB_WASM_BROWSER), browser HTTP and storage adaptations, and a browser SDK (sdk/browser/fluent-bit.js, fluent-bit.d.ts, worker and pthread scripts). The PR objectives describe the same experimental Emscripten build and asynchronous JavaScript SDK. The title is short, names the experimental status, and uses the wasm: prefix. It is a single sentence with no file list, emoji, or vague wording.

P1 Badge Split the bundled ChunkIO changes into a separate commit

This commit modifies the separately maintained lib/chunkio library while also adding Fluent Bit core, SDK, workflow, documentation, and test changes. Keeping the ChunkIO patch mixed into the feature commit prevents it from being reviewed, reverted, or submitted upstream independently; preserve it as a focused commit separate from the Fluent Bit integration.
