Summary

  • Allow callers to choose an scrypt cost when persisting a new masterkey file. This is the cryptolib prerequisite for Cryptomator issue #4087.
  • Preserve the existing persist overloads and their 2^15 default.

Changes

  • Add persistWithScryptCost(...), accepting powers of two from the current default, 2^15, through the default masterkey-file validator limit, 2^20; keep the block size at 8.
  • Validate the cost before file creation. If derivation, writing, or moving fails, clean up only the temporary file created by this call while preserving the original exception.
  • Test custom-cost round trips, both bounds, rejection below the minimum, retry after failure, preservation of pre-existing temporary files, and retention of a non-default cost on password change.

Test plan

  • ./mvnw -B --no-transfer-progress verify — 886 tests, 0 failures, 0 errors, 4 skipped (JDK 26 in a local development container).
  • git diff --check and a redacted local gitleaks scan passed.

The new method does not raise the default for existing callers or update existing vaults. The desktop UI and its chosen default belong in a separate change. Release-age verification of the resolved Maven dependencies remains outstanding.

Walkthrough

Adds persistWithScryptCost to persist a masterkey with a caller-specified scrypt cost and the default block size of 8. The method rejects costs that are not powers of two between 2 and the configured maximum. Tests cover persistence and loading, invalid costs, and passphrase changes that retain the custom cost.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to e8e47

The new custom scrypt cost API looks sound. If a write fails midway, a leftover temporary file could block a retry of vault creation until it is removed. This is a minor, low-likelihood issue and does not block merging.

@overheadhunter The cryptolib API change is ready for maintainer review when you have time. Both earlier inline findings were addressed, and the final head is tested (886 tests, 0 failures, 4 skipped). I am working on getting the commits signed to satisfy the merge rule; no merge requested yet.

Expose a validated creation-time cost without changing existing defaults. Cover file contents, load, invalid costs, and passphrase changes.

Remove temporary files after failed writes so callers can retry without losing the original error. Require the OWASP scrypt minimum of 2^17 for new custom-cost masterkey files while preserving legacy defaults.

Allow 2^15 as the lowest custom cost without changing the existing default or the upper bound. Test creation and loading at the boundary and reject values below it.

Once this is completed, I will then work on the may repo to add the KDF cost option in the desktop GUI.
