feat(assessment): Make pre-filter and assessment optional in the config - #1333
Stacked on #1329 (base: feat/assessment-response-mode).
Summary
An ASSESSMENT config can now hold only a pre-filter, only an assessment, or both. At least one is required. BATCH and RESPONSE both run only the stages the config declares.
AssessmentConfigBlob
input_schema (required)
pre_filters (optional)
- assessment (required)+ assessment (optional)+ at least one of pre_filters / assessment, else 422 at config save
-build_pipeline(pre_filters)+build_pipeline(blob)
topic_relevance (GATE / PASS_THROUGH)
- assessment (always)+ assessment (only if the config has it)
BATCH _finalize
- stage = "assessment"+ stage = last stage of the pipeline
RESPONSE _assess
pre-filters
- assessment (always)+ assessment (only if the config has it)
The run's provider and model come from the last stage (the assessment when present), so existing configs behave as before.
A pre-filter-only run ends on its pre-filter and returns the verdicts with output.assessment = null. A failed pre-filter call there is reported as a row error (COMPLETED_WITH_ERRORS / FAILED) instead of being lost. stop_on_fail has no effect, since nothing follows.
Saved config versions always have assessment, so they stay valid. No migration.
Evidence
Before: a config without assessment was rejected (assessment: Field required). After:
Config

RESPONSE

pipeline [topic_relevance], finalizes with assessment = null
one pre-filter call, no assessment call, assessment = null

Tests: 5-case config test, pipeline/finalize/error-surfacing tests for BATCH, and test_api_response.py covering the three RESPONSE cases. Assessment and config suites: 648 passed.
Merge Danger
Door: two-way. No migration; a revert restores the old rule.
Blast Radius: assessment config save, BATCH submit/finalize, RESPONSE stage loop. Existing configs and runs are unaffected.
ASSESSMENT configurations can omit the assessment stage when a topic-relevance pre-filter is configured. Submission, batch processing, result reporting, and RESPONSE processing use the configured stages.
The config model accepts a topic-relevance pre-filter, an assessment stage, or both, and rejects configurations with neither. Completion validation skips a missing assessment. API documentation and tests cover the stage requirements. The wiki clarifies that extra InputColumn fields are rejected.
Build and finalize configured batch stages backend/app/services/assessment/api/{batch,submission,results}.py, backend/app/tests/assessment/test_api_{batch,submission,read}.py
Submission and batch processing build pipelines from the full config and include configured stages. Finalization and result reporting use the pipeline’s last stage. Tests cover pre-filter-only runs, output, counts, and errors.
Run RESPONSE with configured stages backend/app/services/assessment/api/response.py, backend/app/tests/assessment/test_api_response.py
The RESPONSE runner skips assessment when no assessment block exists. Tests cover pre-filter-only, assessment-only, and combined configurations, including verdicts and errors.
Optional-stage execution is mergeable with bounded follow-up. Correct the stop_on_fail documentation and address the narrow case where an unreadable provider error file can leave rows without verdicts while reporting completion.

Explanation
[#1326] All four coding requirements have evidence at the reviewed head.
(1) Both stages optional, at least one required: In backend/app/models/config/assessment_blob.py, AssessmentConfigBlob.assessment is AssessmentCompletionConfig | None. The _require_a_stage validator raises ValueError when no pre_filters.topic_relevance and no assessment is set. Config route tests cover pre-filter only, assessment only, both, and neither (422).
(2) Pre-filter-only output: In backend/app/services/assessment/api/response.py, _assess returns AssessmentOutput(pre_filter=...) with no assessment when blob.assessment is None. A failed pre-filter call writes stage_errors, and _outcome returns COMPLETED_WITH_ERRORS. For BATCH, build_pipeline(blob) in batch.py ends on the pre-filter when no assessment exists. The change summary states that finalization records the last pipeline stage, and tests cover pre-filter-only finalization and row errors. The _finalize body in batch.py and results.py were not read directly; the output was truncated and the inspection budget was used. This point rests on the change summary and the listed tests.
(3) Pipeline, finalize, provider/model checks: build_pipeline(blob) adds the assessment stage only when blob.assessment is not None. _assessment_config raises ValueError when the block is absent. stage_provider_model reads the pre-filter provider and model for the pre-filter stage and the assessment provider and model otherwise. The change summary states that submission.py resolves provider and model from the last pipeline stage.
(4) Compatibility: assessment remains accepted when present, so saved versions that include it stay valid. The change summary states that no migration is needed.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The code and test changes map to #1326. assessment_blob.py, config.py, and model_config.py make assessment optional and enforce the at-least-one rule. batch.py, submission.py, and results.py make the pipeline, finalization, and provider/model resolution follow the declared stages. response.py skips assessment when it is absent. The API docs in create.md and create_version.md describe the new rule. The tests cover the required combinations.
The docs/wiki/modules/assessment.md edit describes InputColumn rejecting undeclared keys (extra=forbid). The model in assessment_blob.py has this behavior. The edit changes no runtime behavior. It does not map directly to #1326. It is documentation of an existing model setting, so it is not treated as unrelated code. Whether the extra=forbid setting was introduced by this pull request or an earlier change is not established. The earlier review described this doc edit differently, so the description is not fully consistent.

The new sentence says pre_filters alone satisfies the requirement. The validator counts only a topic_relevance filter, so pre_filters: {} with no assessment returns 422. Clients that follow the sentence will send this input and get an error. Name pre_filters.topic_relevance in the sentence so it matches the validator.

Read row errors from every pipeline stage in build_result.
In a pre-filter-only run, build_result reads row errors only from the assessment stage. A pre-filter row error is stored under stage_errors["topic_relevance"] and never reaches the item. _finalize then counts zero errors and sets COMPLETED. The row shows a passing topic_relevance verdict.

Update build_result to collect row errors from every pipeline stage, including
topic_relevance, rather than reading only assessment-stage errors. Ensure
pre-filter errors are attached to the item so _finalize counts them and does not
report the row as passing.

A `submission_doc_id` is resolved at submit: its rows are read, projected onto the schema's columns (a sheet column `input_schema` does not name is dropped, so the schema is the selection and the console need only declare the `@`-referenced columns), validated against `input_schema` like inline ones, and copied into that run's own `submission.jsonl`, so downstream stays one code path and the run keeps an immutable snapshot if the submission file is later replaced. `assessment.submission_id` records which submission it came from, so the provenance survives the copy and `delete_submission` refuses while a BATCH run still points at it. That column is set by RUN and by a `submission_doc_id` BATCH alike; it stays NULL only when BATCH sent rows inline. Legacy RUN runtime lives in `assessment_run.execution` (`RunExecution`).

Legacy RUN runtime lives in `assessment_run.execution` (`RunExecution`).
Correct the wiki: referenced BATCH rows are not copied into a per-run submission.jsonl.
Line 20 of the module wiki says a submission_doc_id BATCH copies its rows into the run's own submission.jsonl and keeps an immutable snapshot. The code does not do this. A referenced run stores only submission_id and streams the uploaded submission's rows. Line 36 of the same page describes that behavior correctly, so the page contradicts itself. Rewrite the line 20 clause so it says a referenced run reads the uploaded submission directly, and state that assessment.submission_id provides the provenance. Remove the "immutable snapshot" wording from that clause.

Correct the `submission_doc_id` clause in the module wiki: say that referenced
BATCH runs read rows directly from the uploaded submission and that
`assessment.submission_id` records their provenance. Remove the claims that rows
are copied into a per-run `submission.jsonl` or retained as an immutable
snapshot.

Add a run_batch_stage test for a failed pre-filter row.
The new error test seeds bag["stage_errors"] directly and calls _finalize. It does not run the writer at backend/app/services/assessment/api/batch.py:1124-1129, which stores provider row errors. The existing run_batch_stage tests use completed results without error rows. A regression in that writer can leave the error-surfacing tests passing.
Add a test that runs run_batch_stage on a pre-filter-only config with one errored row. Assert the stored stage_errors entry for the last stage and the resulting assessment status.

Add a RESPONSE test where a pre-filter call returns an error.
TestOptionalStages mocks only successful stage output. A change that drops the pre-filter error from stage_errors would still pass every case, because the final status would stay COMPLETED. Add a pre-filter-only case where the topic_relevance call returns an error. Assert COMPLETED_WITH_ERRORS.

Config version (tag=ASSESSMENT, `models/config/assessment_blob.py`) owns system / pre-filters / params / schemas: `input_schema` is a **top-level** field on the blob (sibling of `pre_filters`/`assessment`, **mandatory, non-empty** per-column spec `{type, format}` for the BATCH `data` rows — `type` is required per column; `strict: true` means the column must be present and non-blank in every submission row; it is **off by default** because the console declares every sheet column (the backend rejects undeclared ones) and real sheets have blanks — a blank on a non-strict column passes and `build_rows` fills omitted keys with `""` so the placeholder still resolves; note the config store persists the validated blob *with defaults*, so a saved version pins the default in force at save time; `InputColumn` is `extra=forbid`, so a misspelt flag fails at config save; attachment columns (`image`/`pdf`/`video`/`audio`) are url-format only, and `video`/`audio` are Google-only (AI Studio + GCP share `build_google_jsonl`) — a config whose assessment or pre-filter provider is `openai`/`anthropic` is rejected at save when `input_schema` declares one (`UNSUPPORTED_COLUMN_TYPES_BY_PROVIDER`), so no run reaches the builders with such a column) — it describes the shared input rows once, so both the pre-filter and assessment consumers read the same schema. `submission` (the per-row prompt template with `{column}` placeholders — **mandatory** on `assessment.params`, optional on each pre-filter's `params`; every `{placeholder}` is validated at config save against the top-level `input_schema` keys, and an unknown placeholder rejects the save). `json_output_schema` stays in `assessment.params` (assessment-specific, object-typed structured-output schema, omit for free text). The only API-client pre-filter is `topic_relevance` (duplicate_detection was removed from the API-client pipeline; it survives only in the legacy RUN pipeline); it carries its own `provider` (default `openai`) + `params` (TextLLMParams: model, temperature, ...) and runs its own llm call; its criteria live in `params.instructions` (a **mandatory** field, same shape as the assessment call — pre-filters no longer have a top-level `prompt`/`content`) and it may carry its own `params.submission` template. The prompt template lives on the config, not the request. Strict input types `ResponseInput` (RESPONSE, `{data: <one row>}`) / `BatchInput` (BATCH) carry no `query`; they discriminate on the type of `data` (an object ⇒ RESPONSE, a list or a `submission_doc_id` ⇒ BATCH) with `extra=forbid` rejecting a stray `query` — no `mode` tag (`models/assessment/assessment_api.py`). `BatchInput` takes the rows **either** inline as `data` (a list of submission rows, each a flat column→string map, an attachment column's value being a url string) **or** by reference as `submission_doc_id` (an `assessment_submission` id); a `model_validator` requires exactly one, so both-or-neither is a 422. `assessment` and `pre_filters` are both optional but at least one is required (`_require_a_stage`, 422 at save): the pipeline (`build_pipeline(..., with_assessment=...)`) holds only the present stages, a pre-filter-only run finalizes on its last stage and returns `output.assessment = null`, and the run's provider/model come from its last stage. Legacy RUN runtime lives in `assessment_run.execution` (`RunExecution`).

Correct the build_pipeline call in the assessment wiki.
The paragraph documents build_pipeline(..., with_assessment=...). No build_pipeline in the repository accepts with_assessment. The API-client builder in api/batch.py takes only blob, and it selects stages from blob.pre_filters and blob.assessment. Replace the call with build_pipeline(blob) and state that presence of each stage in the config selects it.

Update the assessment wiki’s build_pipeline reference to use
build_pipeline(blob), which accepts only blob. Clarify that the configured
presence of pre_filters and assessment determines which stages are included.

Record the _run_stage calls in the optional-stage test.
test_runs_only_the_configured_stages checks only the persisted counter keys. The runner writes one key per stage, so a repeated stage call leaves those keys unchanged. An extra assessment call whose result is discarded also leaves the output unchanged. The test can pass for an implementation that makes unneeded provider calls. Record the stage argument of each _run_stage call and compare the recorded list with called.

Assert that the pre-filter stays in the pre-filter-only version.
The 201 branch checks only that assessment is None. A regression that drops pre_filters during version creation would still pass this test. Add an assertion that the stored topic_relevance pre-filter is present.

Record an error for each submitted row that has no provider result.
In a pre-filter-only batch, a row that the provider omits from both the output file and the error file gets no verdict and no error. build_result returns that row with pre_filter null and error null, and _finalize can mark the run COMPLETED. The stage completion path should compare the parsed rows with the rows submitted for the stage and record a row error for each missing row.

An ASSESSMENT config now needs at least one of pre_filters or assessment. A pre-filter-only run returns the verdicts with output.assessment null; existing configs are unchanged.
199-199: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Low value
Use a non-default model in the pre-filter-only test.
This test builds its pre-filter-only config with the helper's default model, gpt-4o, and asserts gpt-4o. A submission path that hard-codes gpt-4o for the pre-filter stage would also pass. Pass a different model and assert it, so the test confirms that the configured pre-filter model is recorded.

Issue
Closes #1326
Stacked on #1329 (base:
feat/assessment-response-mode).Summary
An ASSESSMENT config can now hold only a pre-filter, only an assessment, or both. At least one is required. BATCH and RESPONSE both run only the stages the config declares.
output.assessment = null. A failed pre-filter call there is reported as a row error (COMPLETED_WITH_ERRORS / FAILED) instead of being lost.stop_on_failhas no effect, since nothing follows.assessment, so they stay valid. No migration.Evidence
assessmentwas rejected (assessment: Field required).After:
[topic_relevance], finalizes withassessment = nullassessment = null[assessment][topic_relevance, assessment]test_api_response.pycovering the three RESPONSE cases. Assessment and config suites: 648 passed.Merge Danger
Door: two-way. No migration; a revert restores the old rule.
Blast Radius: assessment config save, BATCH submit/finalize, RESPONSE stage loop. Existing configs and runs are unaffected.
