feat(assessment): Implement single response call - #1329
A single row sent to POST /assessments now runs as a response call. The pre-filter and the assessment run straight away, and the result is POSTed to callback_url. Lists of rows still run as a batch.
POST /assessments
input.data = [ {row}, {row} ] -> batch (unchanged)
- input.data = {row} -> 501 Not Implemented+ input.data = {row} + callback_url -> response call, result POSTed to callback_url
Runtime flow of a response call:
submission.submit
validate row against input_schema # same as a batch row
_start_response
create assessment (method=RESPONSE)
create assessment_run (total_items=1, _initial_state)
_enqueue run_assessment_response
run_response_assessment
get_config_blob
_assess
for each pre-filter: _run_stage # build_stage_requests -> provider client -> parse_one
failed call -> fail open, record error
gate verdict false -> skip assessment
assessment: _run_stage
_finish # status + state["result"] saved on the run
deliver -> callback_url
The callback adds an error field to each pre-filter result:
"pre_filter": { "topic_relevance": {
"verdict": true,
"reasoning": "…",
+ "error": null // set when the pre-filter call failed (assessment still runs, like batch)
} }
Rows written for each response call:
+ assessment 1 row (method=RESPONSE, the submitted row)+ assessment_run 1 row (config id + version, stage state, error, result)
batch_job / job / llm_call nothing written

End to end on a scratch DB (real providers, real HTTPS callbacks, 2xx each): gate passed, gate failed, pre-filter call failed (COMPLETED_WITH_ERRORS), assessment call failed (FAILED), config version gone (FAILED). Each call wrote one assessment and one assessment_run row.
Tests: 555 assessment tests pass; full backend suite was 4216 passed before the last commit. Pre-commit passes.
Merge Danger
Door: two-way. No migration; reverting brings back the 501.
Blast Radius: assessment API.
batch.py is refactored but batch behaviour is unchanged; its tests pass apart from renames.
A body whose data is an object used to be a 422; it is now a response call and needs callback_url.
Batch callbacks also gain pre_filter.<name>.error: null (additive).
A worker lost mid-run leaves the call PROCESSING; if the callback fails after 4 retries the result is lost, and the run's saved result is the only copy.
Vertex video over a plain https URL (not gs://) is rejected by Vertex; this comes from the shared request builder.
A single row object in `input.data` now runs as RESPONSE; a list of rows stays BATCH.
The pre-filter gate and the assessment run as direct provider calls in one Celery task,
on the batch request builders, the param mappers and the llm-call clients, and the
result (or failure) is delivered by `callback_url`, which is required for RESPONSE.
Batch request building and stage completion helpers are shared with the new path.
The API now accepts single-row RESPONSE inputs and runs them in a Celery task. The runner executes configured pre-filters and assessment stages, records outcomes, and delivers results or failures through a required callback. BATCH submission remains supported.
A single-row data object selects RESPONSE, which requires callback_url. Submission validates the row, creates an assessment and execution, and dispatches the RESPONSE task. BATCH inputs continue through the BATCH path.
Shared pipeline and result handling backend/app/crud/assessment/api.py, backend/app/services/assessment/api/batch.py, backend/app/services/assessment/api/results.py, backend/app/services/assessment/utils/parsing.py, backend/app/tests/assessment/test_api_batch.py, backend/app/tests/assessment/test_result_files.py
The batch pipeline now provides shared request-building and stage helpers. Config retrieval and input-column mapping use shared helpers. Stage references use PipelineStage, and result parsing uses parse_assessment_text.
RESPONSE execution and callback delivery backend/app/celery/tasks/job_execution.py, backend/app/services/assessment/api/response.py, backend/app/services/assessment/api/callbacks.py, docs/wiki/modules/assessment.md
The Celery task runs the single-row pipeline. The runner records stage state, applies gate and error outcomes, updates run status, and delivers the result or failure through the callback.

Explanation
The title "feat(assessment): Implement single response call" names the main change. The PR adds a response-call path to POST /assessments. A single row in input.data now runs the pre-filter and assessment synchronously and delivers the result to callback_url. The title is specific and conventional. It does not mention the callback delivery or the batch-compatibility refactor, which is acceptable.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1327 requirements are implemented. AssessmentInput selects RESPONSE for one object and BATCH for a list. AssessmentCreate requires callback_url for RESPONSE. submit validates response rows against input_schema, including URL-only attachment values, then creates one RESPONSE assessment and one run. run_assessment_response executes pre-filters and assessment in one Celery task, uses shared batch request builders and provider clients, records stage state and errors, and delivers the result or failure through the callback.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within Issue #1327. The batch refactor supports shared request construction, the response path, and preserved batch behavior. Model changes expose response errors, and the tests and documentation cover the new API contract. No unrelated feature work is demonstrated.

Explanation
The PR description is directly related to the changeset. It explains that a single row sent to POST /assessments now runs as a response call with the result delivered to callback_url, and it lists the affected files (response.py, batch.py, submission.py, callbacks.py, assessment_api.py, job_execution.py), the database rows written, the tests run, and the known risks. This matches the file-level summaries and the linked objectives.

…1327)
RESPONSE now creates an assessment_run row holding the config id and version, the stage
state, any errors and the delivered result. It is seeded by the same state helper as
BATCH, and the Celery task takes the run id.
A failed pre-filter call still fails open as in BATCH, but its error is set on the
pre-filter object in the callback and recorded in stage_errors, and the run ends
COMPLETED_WITH_ERRORS. A failure before any stage started leaves stage_status PENDING.
Wiki and API docs updated, including the callback retry wording.

feat(assessment): Add callback delivery method
feat(assessment): Implement single response call
Nov 3, 2026
Add a route-level test for object-valued assessment input.
A POST /assessments request with an object input.data dispatches run_assessment_response through submit, _start_response, and _enqueue. No test covers this path. The existing route test at backend/app/tests/assessment/test_api_submission.py:503-512 posts list input and patches only run_assessment_api_batch.
Add a route test that posts an object input.data, patches app.celery.tasks.job_execution.run_assessment_response, and asserts that its delay is called. A later change that dispatches the wrong task for object input would then fail the test.

A redelivered message can start while the first run is still active. The status check at response.py:245 is not atomic, so both runs call the providers and send callbacks. Let a redelivery take over a claim left by a dead worker.
Why the claim must allow takeover
A worker death requeues the message. A claim that is never released would block that redelivery and leave the run in PROCESSING.

Persist RESPONSE delivery state so a failed callback can be retried or recovered.
The run becomes terminal before deliver runs (response.py:265-266). If send_callback exhausts its retries, its False result is discarded. A redelivered task after a worker loss returns early (response.py:245-246). No endpoint returns RESPONSE results. Add durable delivery state with a retry or recovery path.

Return free-text assessments as strings, not parsed objects.
parse_assessment_text returns a dict for any JSON-object text, regardless of config type. A free-text config whose model returns JSON therefore sends an object, but the documented contract is a raw string. The RESPONSE path (response.py:184) and the BATCH path (results.py:116) both use this parser. Pass the config's output mode to the parser and return the raw text for free-text configs.
