Summary

Avoid a torch.compile(fullgraph=True) failure when a data-dependent dimension provably fits in one split chunk. Preserve the existing split behavior otherwise.

Description of the change

Add a small helper used by RobustScale and RankGaussian: return the tensor as one chunk when PyTorch can prove the dimension fits; otherwise call the existing Tensor.split. This handles the bounded single-chunk case, including an empty dimension; it does not support arbitrary symbolic chunk counts.

Reproduction on Python 3.12 and PyTorch 2.14.0, CPU:

import torch

def transform(values, mask):
    selected = values[:, mask]
    torch._check(selected.size(-1) <= values.size(-1))
    return torch.cat([chunk.square() for chunk in selected.split(8, -1)], -1)

values = torch.arange(24.0).reshape(3, 8)
with torch._dynamo.config.patch(capture_dynamic_output_shape_ops=True):
    torch.compile(transform, fullgraph=True)(values, torch.arange(8) < 3)

The original split raises:

torch._dynamo.exc.UserError: Could not guard on data-dependent expression Eq(u0, 0) (unhinted: Eq(u0, 0)). (Size-like symbols: u0)

The helper avoids asking the compiler to determine the number of chunks when one chunk is already sufficient.

Validation

Strict Inductor checks passed for selected widths 0, 1, 3 and 8. The focused memory/processor suite also passed on an RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell host with PyTorch 2.14.0+cu130: 55 passed, no skips. No latency improvement is claimed.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of numerical transformations when the data fits within a single processing chunk.
    • Rank-based Gaussian and robust-scaling calculations continue to produce results using the same chunk sizes and calculations as before. This update affects how data is handled during fitting and transformation, without changing the available functionality or introducing new settings.

The change adds _split_tensor to avoid splitting tensors when the selected dimension is provably no larger than the chunk size. RankGaussian and robust scaling use the helper for their existing chunking operations.

Changes: Shape-aware tensor splitting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Add shape-aware split helper
sdm/_memory.py
_split_tensor returns the original tensor as a one-element tuple when the selected dimension is provably no larger than the chunk size. Otherwise, it returns the result of tensor.split.
Use helper in numerical preprocessing
sdm/processing/numerical/rank_gaussian.py, sdm/processing/numerical/robust_scale.py
RankGaussian uses _split_tensor when chunking columns during fitting and rows and output during transformation. Robust scaling uses it to chunk quantile input during fitting. The dimensions and chunk sizes remain unchanged.

Handle symbolic row counts before splitting.

RankGaussian._transform computes size with columns.size(-1) before calling _split_tensor. On the CPU path, split_size evaluates max(num_items, 1), so an unbacked symbolic row count can require a data-dependent guard before _split_tensor can select its single-chunk path. Boolean indexing through TableTensor can produce zero or multiple selected rows under torch.compile(fullgraph=True).

Use a symbolic-safe size calculation that preserves the minimum size of 1.

Add a fullgraph torch.compile test for _split_tensor.

The numerical tests call RobustScale and RankGaussian only in eager mode, and no test compiles _split_tensor. Replacing the helper with a plain tensor.split call would still pass these tests. A regression to the original symbolic-split failure would not be detected.

Add a test that compiles a masked column selection followed by _split_tensor. Cover widths 0, 1, 3, and 8 with size=8. Compare each compiled chunk with its eager result.
