Add KERN — zero-trust verification gateway for Zig (Z3 proof checker + Lean 4 + contracts) - #298
newmathphys wants to merge 1 commit into
Conversation
KERN is a Zig verification toolchain: every Z3 proof DAG is re-checked inside its own kernel, counterexamples are replayed against the real function, contracts (@kern:requires/@kern:ensures) are checked in Python, Zig, C and Rust, and 42 Lean 4 theorems (0 sorry) are part of the toolchain. Placed under "Fundamentals -> Documentation and Testing" (next to the deterministic simulation testing and MCP-server entries), after sb2bg/marionette. `make all` executed as contributing.md requires: markdown-toc and prettier report README.md unchanged, awesome-lint passes (rc=0) with this entry.

its PolyForm Noncommercial license requires a separate license for commercial

- Line 124: Update the README description of KERN’s runtime confirmation to
state that counterexamples are replayed only for Python functions; do not claim
replay for Zig, C, or Rust. Keep the existing verification and
contract-annotation claims unchanged.

Disclose the commercial-use restriction.
KERN's PolyForm Noncommercial license requires a separate license for commercial use, including internal CI/CD. Add a short license note so readers can see this restriction before choosing the tool for company workflows. (github.com)

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Limit the replay claim to supported languages.
KERN's runtime confirmation returns no result for files other than .py. Zig, C, and Rust counterexamples are therefore not replayed against their functions. Replace “each counterexample” with a description of the Python-only runtime confirmation, or support replay in the other languages. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Thanks — the commercial-use restriction is now disclosed explicitly in the PR description: KERN is PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0 (source-available, not OSI), and commercial use, including internal CI/CD inside a company, requires a separate license. I also tightened the runtime-replay wording: the replay is by execution for Python and by an independent concrete evaluator for Zig/C/Rust; a compiled replay is not implemented, and when the proof checker cannot cover a Z3 certificate the verdict degrades to SKIP rather than claiming a proof. |

Adds newmathphys/kern under Fundamentals → Documentation and Testing, after
sb2bg/marionette.Why this section
There is no dedicated verification section in the list, and the closest neighbours here are already tools of this kind: deterministic simulation testing (
marionette), doctest tooling (zig-doctest) and an MCP server (zig-docs-mcp). KERN is a verification tool for Zig (and for Python/C/Rust contracts) rather than a linter or a library. If you would rather have it under Systems Programming → Kernel and Containers (it also defines a sealed.kimgcontainer format), just say so and I will move it.What it does
unsatproof DAG from Z3 is re-checked inside KERN's own Zig kernel (proof_check.zig); everysatcounterexample is re-checked before it is reported — for Python by executing the real function, for Zig/C/Rust by an independent concrete evaluator over the extracted body (same statement split, concrete computation; a disagreement would be reported as a translation bug, not as a finding). A compiled replay (zig run/cc/rustc) is not implemented. When the proof checker cannot cover a Z3 certificate, the verdict degrades toSKIPinstead of claiming a proof.Evidence on real third-party code
The repository ships
audits/— hand-written contracts over real functions fromziglang/zig(lib/std/mem.zig:4826,:4693),tigerbeetle/tigerbeetle(src/stdx/stdx.zig:67),ghostty-org/ghostty(src/renderer/size.zig:253) andandrewrk/zig-general-purpose-allocator(gpda.zig:1065), each with a control mutation. 9 functions: 3 PROVEN, 5 REFUTED (with counterexamples), 1 honest SKIP. The table is generated bymake audits, not written by hand.License (please read before adopting)
KERN is source-available, not OSI open source: PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0. Commercial use — including using it in a company's internal CI/CD — requires a separate commercial license. Personal, academic and other non-commercial use is free.
