Collect code coverage in parallel workers, and split the scenarios across machines - #420
Code coverage no longer forces the Behat tests to run one scenario at a time, and the scenarios can now be split across several machines. In wp-cli/wp-cli this brought the coverage job from 45–48 min down to 3–4 min, with 4 runners of 4 workers each, using PCOV. That took the whole Testing workflow from ~49 min down to ~6 min.
Changes
Coverage in parallel workers. Each worker writes its coverage data to a directory of its own and merges only that into its own build/logs/behat-coverage-<id>.xml. Before, every worker would have merged, and deleted, the data of all the others.
WP_CLI_TEST_SHARD=<index>/<total> runs only that share of the scenarios. The split is by expected cost and depends only on the scenarios, so every machine computes the same one, and together they run every scenario once. Scenarios that use shared resources are spread over the shards too, as every shard has a machine of its own. Selecting scenarios by path or name ignores the shard.
Phar builds in wp-cli-bundle. With coverage, building a Phar of the bundle rewrites its Composer autoloader while the build runs. Those scenarios now run one after the other on the first worker.
Testing
New TestBehatParallel tests run the runner over feature files in a temporary project:
the shards together cover every scenario exactly once;
the most expensive scenarios end up on different shards;
a shard without scenarios succeeds;
an invalid shard value runs everything, with a warning;
paths ignore the shard.
With the shard selection deliberately broken, 3 of the 5 tests fail.
CI in wp-cli/wp-cli, pinned to this branch: all 55 jobs green, and Codecov's feature coverage at 64.97% against 65.13% before. The 18 lines of difference are global statements, which Xdebug counts and PCOV doesn't, plus two paths that were only covered by chance. wp-cli/wp-cli gets dedicated tests for those.
phpcs and PHPStan pass.
The matching workflow change in wp-cli/.github still works with versions of this package that can't shard: there, the first coverage runner runs every scenario and the others skip.

Walkthrough
The Behat runner now supports cost-balanced scenario shards and parallel coverage runs. Worker-specific coverage IDs separate source files and reports. The README documents shard configuration and the conditions that still require sequential execution.

Summary
Shard selection and execution utils/behat-parallel.php, tests/tests/TestBehatParallel.php
The runner parses shard settings and distributes scenarios by expected cost. Shard runs execute only their assigned scenarios, including successful runs with no assigned scenarios. Integration tests cover distribution, invalid settings, and explicit scenario selection.
Runner entry and shard documentation bin/run-behat-tests, README.md
The test entry point starts the parallel runner when sharding is configured. The README documents shard configuration and scenario selection.
Coverage IDs select worker-specific source directories and report filenames. Child processes receive the ID, and the report generator uses the corresponding destination directory. The README describes parallel coverage behavior.
Shard-only coverage runs can overwrite one another’s reports, and an earlier worker report can remain after a run with no coverage data. Resolve these reporting risks before merging.

Remove a stale report when this worker collected no coverage.
If a worker produced a report in an earlier run but has no .cov directory in the next run, this return leaves its old XML report in build/logs. A coverage collector can then treat old results as current. Remove the matching $report when $source_dir is absent. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Set a coverage ID for single-worker shards.
When WP_CLI_TEST_SHARD is set and the worker count is one, this branch starts Behat before the worker loop assigns WP_CLI_TEST_COVERAGE_ID. Coverage therefore goes to behat-coverage.xml, not a shard-specific report. Set the ID before this invocation so shard-only coverage runs produce distinct reports. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
