Summary

  • A pin mismatch on one relay stayed invisible, because the pool stays up when any other relay connects.
  • The live handshake reports that transition once, until a later handshake for that host succeeds. The node stores an authenticated audit entry and emits RelayPinRejected.
  • Desktop event log, CLI serve, and the web activity stream and signing log show it. The phone logs it.

Test plan

  • Pin mismatch and strict-missing are reported once, and a later successful handshake arms the report again
  • A certificate that fails ordinary validation is not reported as a pin failure
  • A rejection that happens before anyone is subscribed is audited and delivered once
  • Web activity mapping test
  • cargo clippy on the changed packages with the CI feature set, warnings denied

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The Signing Log now shows relay certificate pin rejections, including the relay host and rejection details. These records are included in signing-log exports and verification.
    • Relay pin rejections are retained separately from signing entries, so they do not reduce the available signing-log capacity.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Application logs now report relay pin rejections with the host and reason, and clarify when a rejected relay remains disconnected.

Walkthrough

The change reports TLS relay pin rejections. The verifier classifies pin mismatches and strict-mode missing pins and can invoke a callback. Nodes audit and publish reports. Application surfaces log or display rejection details.

Changes

Relay Pin Rejection Reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pin rejection classification and callback
keep-frost-net/src/pinning.rs, keep-frost-net/src/pinned_transport.rs, keep-frost-net/src/lib.rs
The verifier classifies pin mismatches and strict-mode missing pins. It reports each host and reason once until a successful handshake clears the refusal state. TLS setup attaches the optional callback when configured.
Node reporting and authenticated audit records
keep-frost-net/src/node/*, keep-frost-net/src/audit.rs, keep-frost-net/src/lib.rs
Nodes retain reports until event subscribers are available, audit accepted relay hosts in a separate capped ring, and publish rejection events. Audit verification includes pin-rejection records.
Application and activity-log reporting
keep-cli/src/commands/frost_network/mod.rs, keep-desktop/src/frost.rs, keep-mobile/src/lib.rs, keep-web/src/bunker.rs
The CLI, desktop, and mobile listeners log relay pin rejections. Web bunker event conversion creates failed Frost activity logs with the relay host and rejection explanation.
Web signing-log response and display
keep-web/src/api.rs, keep-web/ui/src/lib/api.ts, keep-web/ui/src/App.svelte
The API returns pin-rejection records newest first. The web interface loads and exports the records and displays their relay hosts and details.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 94f86

Pin failures can produce duplicate CLI errors or be reported again without a successful handshake. The pending-report queue can also grow while no listener is present. These are bounded merge risks that should be fixed or explicitly accepted.

Bound the pending queue.

When no receiver exists, PinReports::report appends every new rejection to pending. Failure deduplication does not bound this queue because a successful handshake clears the failure state and allows a later failure to report again. Reconnect is enabled with a 10-second retry interval, so alternating successful and failing handshakes can retain entries indefinitely while subscribers are absent. The normal desktop path subscribes soon after construction, but delayed or absent subscribers remain supported states.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clear pin-refusal state only after the transport handshake succeeds.

verify_server_cert clears the refusal state before rustls verifies the server’s handshake signature. A pinned certificate with an invalid CertificateVerify signature therefore clears the state even though client_async_tls_with_config returns an error. Because reconnect is enabled, a later pin mismatch can emit a duplicate rejection for the same refusal transition.

Move the reset to the successful return path of the pinned transport. Retain the verifier handle so the transport can clear the host only after the TLS/WebSocket handshake returns Ok.

Drop the duplicate error record for relay pin rejections.

The verifier already logs the first refusal for each host and reason at error level. The RelayPinRejected listeners then log the same refusal again. Each refusal therefore produces two error records. Remove the log from both listeners and keep the verifier record. The commit message says a rejection is logged once.

The listener at line 1606 is the one this comment cites. The listener at line 745 has the same log and the same duplicate.
