Summary

CLI and web now load cert-pins.json from the vault directory, probe wss relays, and enforce that pin on the live handshake. Strict pinning stays off unless the CLI config sets strict_cert_pinning or KEEP_STRICT_CERT_PINNING is 1 or true. The web co-signer reads only that environment variable. A missing file is a first run. A corrupt or unreadable store refuses to connect instead of trusting the next certificate.

keep-agent is unchanged and still CA-only. The web keep-state replication socket is also unpinned: that relay is an operator-set local or mesh address, and the pinning transport refuses a private address on wss, which would stop replication to the on-box relay. A cleartext relay still connects when strict mode is off, which is what local ws:// testing uses. Strict mode refuses it before dialing.

Test plan

  • Pin store: missing file, round trip, corrupt JSON, malformed pin, and strict refusal of ws:// before any dial
  • CLI config: strict_cert_pinning defaults off and parses on
  • keep serve against a local relay completes a NIP-46 connect and a signature that verifies
  • Software DKG ceremony over a local relay
  • Wallet sign with a co-signer over a local relay
  • Live public-relay check: a pin learned by the probe is enforced on the next handshake, a mismatched pin blocks the socket, and the handshake does not record a pin

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security
    • Relay connections used by the CLI and web co-signer now support certificate pinning, with pins stored in the vault.
    • Strict certificate pinning can be enabled in the CLI configuration or with an environment variable; the web co-signer uses the environment variable.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Duress alerts continue retrying relay connections until connected, helping ensure alerts are broadcast after temporary connection failures.
  • Documentation
    • Updated security guidance to explain where pinning applies and how to enable strict mode.

Walkthrough

The change adds a vault-backed relay certificate pin store and strict-pinning controls. CLI and web co-signer relay connections use pin-aware helpers. The CLI also retries duress relay setup until it connects. The security documentation describes the pinning coverage and exclusions.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pin store and transport behavior
keep-frost-net/src/lib.rs, keep-frost-net/src/pin_store.rs, keep-frost-net/src/pinned_transport.rs, docs/SECURITY.md
Adds persistent relay pins, strict-mode handling, and TLS pinning integration. The security documentation describes covered and unpinned sockets.
CLI pinning configuration and helpers
keep-cli/src/config.rs, keep-cli/src/pinning.rs, keep-cli/src/main.rs
Adds the CLI strict-pinning option and helpers for pin-aware client, node, signer, and server configuration setup.
CLI FROST network workflows
keep-cli/src/commands/frost_network/*, keep-cli/src/commands/secret.rs
Routes FROST relay connections through pinning helpers and passes vault paths into those flows. Duress relay setup retries connection attempts until successful.
CLI server and wallet connections
keep-cli/src/commands/serve.rs, keep-cli/src/commands/wallet.rs
Pins bunker relays before server construction. Wallet FROST and NIP-46 signer connections use pin-aware helpers.
Web co-signer relay connections
keep-web/src/bunker.rs, keep-web/src/main.rs
Probes FROST and bunker relays and supplies pinning configuration during network-FROST and single-key startup.

Resolve concurrent pin-store writes before merging: they can corrupt the store or lose certificate pins when the CLI and web co-signer share a vault. The duress relay loop should also back off on repeated connection failures.

A rabbit checks the relay’s light,
And stores its pin before the night.
The CLI connects with care,
The web co-signer joins it there.
Through vault and socket, pins hold tight,
While carrots celebrate the rite.
