Summary

Ports the Mac's provider-status poller. With Settings › General › Refreshing › Check provider status on (the default), each provider refresh also polls that provider's public status page. The results show in three places:

  • a 6px dot beside each provider in the Settings sidebar;
  • a secondary incident line in the tray panel menu;
  • one line per incident in the tray icon tooltip.

Turning the switch off clears every status, and the sidebar goes back to the fetch-status dots.

Behaviour by part, with the Mac source

Part Windows Mac citation (0.70.0 source)
1. Setting status_checks_enabled defaults to true through a serde default, so legacy files load as on. It is in preferences export and import. SettingsStore.swift:737 (statusChecksEnabled default true)
2. Poller status_poller::spawn_poll runs from do_refresh_providers_with_policy, so it polls on the same cadence as the refresh. It runs on the tokio runtime, never the UI thread. Each source has a 15 s timeout (POLL_TIMEOUT) and HTTP has its own 10 s timeout. A ticket per provider stops a stale poll from overwriting a newer one. Results go to AppState and the shell emits provider-statuses-updated. A failed fetch keeps the last good status, or stays unknown, and only a success retires older polls still in flight, as on the Mac (UsageStore+ProviderStatus.swift:28-36). An unforced refresh (timer tick, surface mount) skips a provider whose last poll started under 30 s ago (UNFORCED_POLL_SPACING). Forced refreshes (manual, menu open, switch on) always poll. The Codex auto-resume probe never polls. Turning the switch off drops polls still in flight. Each poll is a detached tauri::async_runtime::spawn task (status_poller.rs:198-222). It holds the AppState lock only before and after the network wait, and nothing joins it, so it never holds up app exit. The timeouts bound how long a task can live. Logs go through tracing with no URLs or bodies. UsageStore.swift:842 (status refresh inside the provider refresh), UsageStore+Accessors.swift:193-196 (status(for:) is nil when off)
3. Switch General › Refreshing has "Check provider status" with the Mac subtitle, translated into all 10 locales. PreferencesGeneralPane.swift:162-166
4. Sidebar dot The dot is 6px. Colours: operational green, minor yellow, major orange, critical red, maintenance or unknown gray. Its tooltip reads "Provider service status: ". When the switch is off, or the provider has no status page, the existing fetch-status dot stays. PreferencesSidebar.swift:197-203 (dot), :233-235 (label), :236-244 (colours)
5a. Menu or card The tray panel footer shows the target provider's incident as a secondary line above the app rows. The text is the trimmed description, else the indicator label, then " — " and the update time. Operational shows no line. The target is the selected provider, or the first enabled provider on Overview. MenuDescriptor.swift:611-612 (the line after the Status Page action), :645-657 (statusLine)
5b. Icon The Windows tray icon gets no pixel overlay. Instead, each enabled provider with an incident adds a ": " line under "CodexBar" in the icon tooltip. StatusItemController+Animation.swift:343, :1466-1477 and IconRenderer.swift:1057-1100 (incident badge drawn on the menu bar icon)
6. Bridge ProviderStatusEntry and ProviderServiceStatus in commands/bridge.rs match types/bridge.ts, where the indicator is the ServiceStatusIndicator union of upstream raw values and updatedAt is Unix milliseconds. The settings snapshot field statusChecksEnabled and the optional update patch field are mirrored too. get_provider_statuses is the reader. n/a

Status sources come from rust/src/status/, which is reworked to match upstream ProviderStatus.swift and ProviderStatusFetcher.swift. A table maps each provider to a statuspage.io page or the Google Workspace product. Shared code never branches on a provider, and a provider's status only ever shows on that provider's own row.

Where Windows differs

  • Tray icon. A Windows tray icon is 16px and already carries the usage bars, so an incident badge would be unreadable there. Incidents go into the tooltip instead. The native context menu is unchanged.
  • Status line time. The status line uses the Windows relative-time strings ("5 minutes ago"). The Mac uses UsageFormatter.updatedString, which reads "Updated 5m ago" and switches to an absolute date after 24h.
  • Providers without a status page. These keep the fetch-status dot, as the brief asks. The Mac shows gray for them.
  • Skipped. The incident.io proxy, summary.json component parsing and the Mac's components submenu are not ported.

Tests added

  • Rust rust/src/status/tests.rs, 8 tests with literal asserts. Statuspage tests cover the indicator, description and date, the raw-value mapping including unknown values, and a bad date failing the feed. Google Workspace tests cover the worst active incident winning, resolved incidents being ignored, and currently_affected_products with the severity fallback. Two more cover the per-provider source table and the summary fallback to the CLI label.

  • Rust rust/src/settings/tests.rs. The default is true, a legacy file without the key loads as true, and an explicit false holds.

  • Rust preferences_document/tests.rs. status_checks_enabled: false survives export and import.

  • Rust status_poller.rs, 8 tests with a fake fetcher.

    • Switch off polls nothing.
    • Switch on polls each source once.
    • A failed fetch keeps the last good status or stays unknown.
    • Turning off mid-poll drops the results.
    • An older poll can't overwrite a newer result.
    • A provider disabled mid-poll is dropped.
    • Incidents become tooltip lines under the title.
    • A hung fetch times out without blocking the other sources.
  • Vitest GeneralTab.test.tsx, 2 tests. On by default with its subtitle, toggling saves { statusChecksEnabled: false }. Saved off renders unchecked, and toggling saves { statusChecksEnabled: true }.

  • Vitest ProvidersSidebar.test.tsx, 2 tests. Rows get literal classes such as providers-sidebar__service--minor and --critical, plus the Mac tooltip. A provider without a status page (Zai) keeps providers-sidebar__status--error. The stylesheet assertions check a 6px dot, gray as the base colour and the Mac system colour variables in light and dark.

  • Vitest serviceStatus.test.ts. Literal status-line strings.

  • Vitest TrayPanel.test.tsx. The footer note shows "Elevated error rates — 5 minutes ago" in DOM order. It disappears for an operational provider and clears on [].

  • Rust status_poller.rs, validation additions. unforced_polls_within_thirty_seconds_skip_the_page_and_forced_ones_do_not and newer_failure_does_not_retire_an_older_success_still_in_flight.

  • Rust commands/providers.rs. Auto-resume refreshes skip the status poll.

  • Rust rust/src/cli/usage_tests.rs. The legacy status.level values, including minor read as degraded.

  • Rust rust/src/locale/tests.rs. "Provider service status:" stays English in every locale, as on the Mac.

  • Vitest useProviderStatuses.test.ts, 3 tests. The listener is registered before the snapshot read, so an event that lands in between is kept.

Commands run on the PR head

All of these ran on head 38f426c1a, with CARGO_TARGET_DIR set outside the worktree and CI not set.

Command Result
cargo fmt --all -- --check pass
cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml 4139 passed, 0 failed, 1 ignored
cargo clippy --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml --all-targets -- -D warnings pass, no lint warnings*
cargo test --manifest-path apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/Cargo.toml 706 passed, 0 failed
cargo clippy --manifest-path apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/Cargo.toml --all-targets -- -D warnings pass, no lint warnings*
pnpm --config.verify-deps-before-run=false test 122 files, 1105 tests passed
pnpm exec tsc --noEmit pass, no output
pnpm run build pass
CircleCI ci/circleci: pr-check on 38f426c1a pass

* Both clippy runs print Cargo's existing notice that profiles for the non-root package are ignored. That notice is not a lint.

Proof

The proof ran a debug build of the PR head 38f426c1a with the rig's reqwest proof shim, which sends every non-loopback request to a localhost mock. No real status page was contacted. The run used an isolated home and synthetic feeds, with the window parked on the secondary monitor. Input came from CDP trusted mouse events, and the screenshots are real pixels from cua-driver. The foreground window was unchanged in all three scenarios. Proof files live outside the repo in W:/mac-parity/report/q4-status/validate/final/, which holds proof.json, the screenshots and the mock routes and logs under runs/. The script is W:/mac-parity/report/q4-status/validate/tools/prove_status.py, and the check logs are in validate/logs-final/.

Mock feeds.

Provider Feed Mock state
Claude statuspage none
Codex statuspage minor, "Elevated error rates for Codex", 20 min old
Copilot statuspage major, 40 min old
Cursor statuspage maintenance
Gemini Google Workspace active SERVICE_OUTAGE incident
z.ai none no status page

Settings, General (win-settings-1-switch-on.png, -2-switch-off.png, -3-switch-on-again.png)

Step Switch Saved status_checks_enabled Sidebar dots (class, computed colour)
Launch from a seed without the key on key absent, loads as true codex --minor rgb(255,214,10); claude --none rgb(48,209,88); cursor --maintenance rgb(142,142,147); gemini --critical rgb(255,69,58); copilot --major rgb(255,159,10); zai fetch dot providers-sidebar__status--error. Every dot is 6x6 px.
Click off off false (decrypted from the isolated DPAPI file) get_provider_statuses returns []. All six rows fall back to the fetch dot providers-sidebar__status--error. The mock got 0 status requests.
Click on on true Same as the first row. Turning on ran one status-only poll, so the mock got exactly 5 status requests.

Each launch starts with a fresh mock log, so the counts cover one launch only. Startup made exactly 5 status requests in every scenario, one poll of 5 feeds. The shell still runs two provider refreshes at startup (each provider's usage fetch is logged twice in runs/*/launch.log), but the second refresh comes within 30 s and is not forced, so it skips the status pages. The settings scenario totals 10 status requests: 5 at startup, 0 while off, then 5 after the switch went back on. The build before the validation fixes (7dd48a7b1) made 10 at startup and 15 in total.

View Footer line
Overview "Elevated error rates for Codex — 20 minutes ago", above Refresh
Copilot "Copilot is unavailable — 40 minutes ago", after Usage Dashboard and Status Page, as on the Mac
Claude (operational) no line

Mac reference. W:/mac-parity/shots/settings/0.70.0/general-part1.png shows the same switch, title and subtitle under Refreshing, plus sidebar dots (green for providers with a status page, gray for OpenRouter). The side-by-side sheet is W:/mac-parity/report/settings-sheets/general.png. No Mac capture of an incident in the menu exists.

Not covered in the real window. The tray icon tooltip lines and the native tray menu are covered by unit tests only, because the proof rules forbid clicking the taskbar.

Open questions and the defaults chosen

  1. Switch on. Turning the switch on runs a status-only poll, not a full usage refresh. The Mac is silent here, so this is the smallest change.
  2. Icon. Incidents go into the tooltip lines rather than a pixel badge (see "Where Windows differs").
  3. Before the first poll. The sidebar dot is gray (unknown) until the first poll lands.
  4. CLI JSON. status.level keeps the legacy values (operational, degraded, major, unknown). The only change is that a raw minor indicator now reads degraded instead of unknown, which is noted in the CHANGELOG. The Mac CLI has no level field.
  5. Sidebar tooltip language. "Provider service status: …" is English in every locale, because the Mac string isn't localized either.
  6. No status page. These providers keep the fetch dot, as the brief asks, where the Mac would show gray.
  7. Time format. The status line uses the Windows relative time rather than the Mac's "Updated 5m ago" and absolute date after 24h.
  8. Overview target. On Overview the status line targets the first enabled provider, matching the Mac's enabledFirstPartyProviders().first.
  9. Not ported. The incident.io proxy, summary.json components and the components submenu.

Validation commits

  • d0a36a44f Skip status polls on auto-resume refreshes
  • 4065cd89d Keep the legacy CLI status level values
  • 14fe5ef25 Replace status feed parse errors with a fixed string

  • f2624ac7a Register the status listener before reading the snapshot
  • 46535e500 Space unforced status polls and keep older results after a failure
  • ee07e8490 Pin the English provider service status label
  • 1fd93d937 Fix the tray panel status line prop indentation
  • 38f426c1a Note provider status checks in the changelog

The merge a4b5f40ca brings in origin/main 27434ca21.

Replace the CLI-only StatusLevel with upstream's ProviderStatusIndicator, add the typed status-source table (11 upstream providers, including the Google Workspace incidents feed for Gemini and Antigravity), and port parseStatuspageStatus and parseGoogleWorkspaceStatus with upstream fixtures. The CLI now fetches by ProviderId; its JSON status level uses upstream raw indicator values.
Upstream SettingsStore.swift:737 reads statusChecksEnabled ?? true. Legacy files without the key load as true, and the key travels in preferences export and import.

Full details: Provider Data Stays Siloed

Explanation

The pull request adds cross-provider branching in shared code. In rust/src/status/mod.rs, status_source(provider: ProviderId) matches specific providers (Claude, Codex | OpenAIApi, Copilot, Cursor, Factory, Augment, HuggingFace, ZoomMate, and Gemini | Antigravity) to status sources. This file is outside the allowed rust/src/providers/<name>/ and rust/src/core/provider_factory.rs paths. This matches the explicit failure condition.

Resolution

Move provider-specific status-source selection into the allowed provider-specific modules or rust/src/core/provider_factory.rs. Keep shared status code generic and pass a provider-owned status source or strategy into it. Do not match specific ProviderId variants from rust/src/status/mod.rs.

Full details: Ui Changes Include Windows Proof

Explanation

The pull request changes visible Windows UI, including the tray panel, Settings sidebar dots, provider settings, and styling. The available description context reports unit tests and a build, but it does not clearly state that the build was fresh and Windows-specific, and it says the tray UI had no real-window proof. The authored description is truncated, and the full description is not available in repository metadata. The omitted text could contain the required screenshots or proof note.
