I'm a full-stack software engineer in Portland, OR. I build web apps, APIs, and the cloud infrastructure they run on. At OHSU's Knight Cancer Institute that means distributed task-execution systems for genomic research; on my own time it's browser-based tools, websites, and small experiments.
What I work on
- 🧬 Funnel (Go): lead developer and maintainer of a GA4GH Task Execution API server that runs containerized tasks on Kubernetes, AWS Batch, and HPC (Slurm)
- 🔌 nf-ga4gh (Groovy): Nextflow plugin that runs existing pipelines on any TES backend without code changes
- 🐍 py-tes (Python): Python client for the GA4GH TES API
- 📦 DRS Downloader (Go): parallel downloader for GA4GH DRS data on NIH AnVIL / Terra
- ☸️ Kubernetes, Helm, and Terraform for a cancer research data commons across AWS, Azure, and OpenStack
On the web side
- 🖥️ demonic-web + demonic-server (JavaScript): an in-browser terminal that lets visitors try command-line programs live over WebSockets
- 🧫 convida (Rust → WebAssembly): Conway's Game of Life running in the browser
- 🌐 liambeckman.com (Astro): my personal site and blog
Tools I use most
- Backend: Go · Python · gRPC/REST · PostgreSQL · Elasticsearch
- Frontend: TypeScript · JavaScript · HTML/CSS · Astro · WebAssembly
- Platform: Kubernetes · Helm · Terraform · AWS · Docker · GitHub Actions
- Also: Java · Rust · Nextflow · HL7 FHIR
Writing & talks
