Closes #1782 — AI-4148

What & why

Deleting the AppImage left the daemon's systemd user unit, the local server, the kcap link (now dangling, so every harness hook failed), the harness integrations and ~/.config/kcap behind. On Linux the app now offers Uninstall kcap… in the in-window menu at the foot of the rail, beside Settings, and runs the same flow as macOS:

  • confirm with the same facts;
  • relaunch the image in uninstall mode;
  • run kcap uninstall, which already removes systemd units, the local server, harness entries, links to itself and the config directory;
  • then remove what only the app knows about: links into the CLI it copied out of the mount, the copy itself (~/.local/share/kcap/desktop), and the image, which goes to the freedesktop.org home Trash

Windows keeps its installer hook and never gets the item.

Where to look

  • LinuxAppRemoval.TrashBundleAsync claims the .trashinfo name with CreateNew before moving the image, so two removals never take one name. An image on a different filesystem from the Trash stays where it is: the window then opens its folder and says to move it to the Trash by hand
  • IAppRemoval.FinishByHand lets each platform word that last step

Verification

Run Result
Mutant: in-window button always visible Rail_help_carries_the_app_menu… fails (both rows)
Mutant: .trashinfo opened with Create the collision test fails
LinuxAppRemovalTests + UninstallModeTests + UninstallRunViewModelTests + MainWindowSmokeTests + AppMenuBarTests + AppImageInstallTests + ButtonAutomationNameTests + UninstallConfirmationTests + UninstallFactsSourceTests 127/127 pass on macOS

Not run on Linux: no live AppImage uninstall, and the symlink test is excluded on Windows

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Supported Linux AppImage installations can now be uninstalled from the app’s help menu.
    • Uninstalling removes related support files and links, then moves the AppImage to the Trash. If removal cannot be completed, the app provides instructions for finishing manually.
  • Documentation
    • Updated uninstall instructions to describe the Linux menu location and cleanup steps.

The image goes to the freedesktop.org home Trash; one on another filesystem stays put and the folder holding it is opened instead

Walkthrough

The app adds an in-window uninstall path for detected Linux AppImages. Linux-specific removal logic handles staged CLI files, links, and moving the AppImage to the user’s Trash. Tests cover removal behavior, menu visibility, and uninstall-run creation.

Changes: Linux AppImage uninstall

Layer / File(s) Summary
Linux removal and Trash handling
src/Capacitor.App/Platform/Linux/AppImageInstall.cs, src/Capacitor.App/Platform/Linux/LinuxAppRemoval.cs, src/Capacitor.App/Services/IAppRemoval.cs, test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/LinuxAppRemovalTests.cs
Staging path helpers are shared with removal logic. Linux removal attempts to remove links to the staged CLI, deletes staged support files, and moves an existing AppImage to Trash with .trashinfo metadata. Tests cover cleanup, naming collisions, permissions, failures, and revealing the image folder.
Uninstall run and app entry point

Merge Risk: Low · up to de131

A narrow race can leave uninstall incomplete, but users can run kcap uninstall manually.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to de131

The new uninstall action retains confirmation, ordered cleanup, and protections against overwriting existing Trash entries. No exploitable security boundary bypass was established. Risk remains low rather than minimal because cleanup is not fully transactional and live Linux uninstall behavior has not been verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The intended scope exceeds one AppImage: confirmation describes stopping every kcap background service, removing user-level integrations, settings and sign-in, and permanently deleting local-server sessions when present. The CLI invocation uses force and yes flags, making the preceding desktop confirmation the interactive consent control.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The Linux link-removal path delegates to a helper that checks resolved symlink targets and rechecks before deletion. Remaining owned links stop image removal. The Linux implementation does not invoke the macOS administrator-removal mechanism.
  • observed — Trash metadata is claimed with CreateNew before moving the image. Destination replacement is prohibited by the native move implementation, and cross-filesystem failure leaves the image in place rather than copying and deleting it.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Interruption between the fallback link and unlink calls can leave both the original image and a Trash hard link. Repetition can allocate another Trash name. This weakens exactly-once cleanup but does not itself demonstrate image loss, overwrite, or increased authority.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue #1782 is open, so its coding requirements apply. The PR meets them as follows.

[#1782] Daemon, local server, harness, PATH link, and config cleanup: UninstallMode.BuildAppImageRun starts an UninstallRunViewModel that runs the existing kcap uninstall flow. UninstallConfirmation.Build adds the local-server warning ("will be removed and every session recorded on it permanently deleted") when LocalServerUrl is set, and passes the purge argument in that case. LinuxAppRemoval.RemoveLinksAsync removes kcap links into the staged CLI through KcapLinkRemover. The systemd unit, harness entries, and ~/.config/kcap removal rely on existing kcap uninstall behavior, which the PR description and the macOS flow described in the issue both state. This review did not re-read that CLI code.

[#1782] App-owned leftovers and the image: LinuxAppRemoval.DeleteSupportFiles deletes the staged copy under ~/.local/share/kcap/desktop. LinuxAppRemoval.TrashBundleAsync moves the AppImage to the freedesktop home Trash. It claims the .trashinfo name with CreateNew before the move, and it uses a no-replace move. An image on another filesystem stays in place, and FinishByHand tells the user to move it by hand.

[#1782] Entry point: the in-window item is bound through SessionRailView, AppMenu, and MainWindowViewModel.ShowsUninstall. It appears only when BuildAppImageRun returns a run, which requires an existing AppImage. Windows is not changed.

Tests cover the removal logic, trash naming, cross-filesystem handling, and UI visibility. Live AppImage uninstall and the Linux-only renameat2 path were not run on Linux. These are verification gaps, not missing requirements.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Each changed area supports the Linux uninstall path for #1782.

  • LinuxAppRemoval.cs, AppImageInstall.cs (StagedRoot, StagedCliDirectory, DataHome): removal logic and path helpers.
  • UninstallMode.cs, App.axaml.cs: build the AppImage run and pass the action to the window. The unsupported-install error text now names the AppImage. This is part of the same flow.
  • IAppRemoval.cs, UninstallRunViewModel.cs: FinishByHand lets each platform word the last step. The default text keeps the macOS wording.
  • MainWindowViewModel.cs, AppMenu.cs, SessionRailView.axaml: menu item plumbing for the in-window entry point.
  • Test files and README.md: cover the new behavior and document the Linux location.

No change adds unrelated product behavior. The Windows installer hook is not modified.

1. A compatibility note describes history 📘 Rule violation ⚙ Maintainability
Description
MoveWithoutReplacing includes an added comment saying the fallback handles a libc that predates
the wrapper. That historical wording describes how the implementation evolved rather than the
current fallback rationale, so future readers receive change-history instead of a stable
explanation.
Code

2. An old data directory survives uninstall 🐞 Bug ≡ Correctness
Description
LinuxAppRemoval recomputes the staged root from the current XDG_DATA_HOME rather than
identifying the directory used when the CLI link was installed. If that variable changed between
launches, removal targets the new root and cannot remove the earlier staged CLI or its link, while
CLI uninstall deliberately keeps path links for app-side cleanup.
Code

+               Path.Combine(AppImageInstall.DataHome(getEnv, home), "Trash"), time) { }
Relevance

●●● Strong

Recent Linux staging precedents prioritize preserving stable paths and cleaning persistent
installation state.

PR-#1541

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
Staging selects its root from the environment of that launch; the new removal constructor selects
its root afresh, and both link matching and deletion are confined to that selected root. CLI
uninstall does not provide a second path-link cleanup in this flow.

3. Uninstall succeeds with the CLI copy left 🐞 Bug ≡ Correctness
Description
LinuxAppRemoval.DeleteSupportFiles catches a failure to delete the staged directory and returns
normally. If permissions or an I/O error prevent deletion, UninstallRunViewModel still moves the
AppImage to the Trash and reports success while the copied CLI and plugin remain.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Platform/Linux/LinuxAppRemoval.cs[R51-54]

+            if (Directory.Exists(_stagedRoot)) Directory.Delete(_stagedRoot, recursive: true);

●●● Strong

Swallowing support-file deletion errors can falsely report successful uninstall; this is a

PR-#1541

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence

deletion to trashing and then the finished state without checking whether that directory was
removed.

4. A concurrent image replacement can be lost 🐞 Bug ☼ Reliability
Description
MoveWithoutReplacing falls back to link(from, to) followed by unlink(from), without checking
that from still names the inode it linked. On a system lacking the renameat2 operation,
replacement of the AppImage at that path between those calls makes uninstall delete the replacement
file rather than the image placed in the Trash.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Platform/Linux/LinuxAppRemoval.cs[R147-148]

+        if (LinkNative(from, to) != 0) return Marshal.GetLastPInvokeError();

fallback hardening is required.

PR-#1541

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The fallback is selected when the native no-replace rename is unavailable or returns a designated
unsupported error. Its separate pathname-based link and unlink calls provide no guarantee that the
source pathname still refers to the linked image.

Informational

5. Links made while the CLI ran from the mount survive uninstall 🐞 Bug ≡ Correctness
Description
LinuxAppRemoval.RemoveLinksAsync checks only for kcap links resolving to
<stagedRoot>/bin/kcap, although TakeCliOutOfMount can fall back to the CLI inside the AppImage
mount when copying it fails. In that fallback case, setup can create a PATH link into
/tmp/.mount_*; app-driven CLI uninstall preserves PATH links, and removal trashes the image
without finding the mount-backed link, leaving it dangling and causing harness hooks to report
“command not found.”
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Platform/Linux/LinuxAppRemoval.cs[R42-46]

+    public Task<IReadOnlyList<string>> RemoveLinksAsync(CancellationToken ct) {
+        var remover = new KcapLinkRemover(_linkFolders, Path.Combine(AppImageInstall.StagedCliDirectory(_stagedRoot), "kcap"));
+        foreach (var failure in remover.Remove()) Console.Error.WriteLine($"kcap: could not remove {failure.Path}: {failure.Reason}");
+
+        return Task.FromResult(remover.Find());
Relevance

●●● Strong

Fallback-mounted CLI links are a concrete uninstall leak matching recent Linux cleanup reliability
concerns.

PR-#1541

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
TakeCliOutOfMount returns the mounted CLI directory if staging fails, and setup creates its shim
using the returned directory. App-driven CLI uninstall uses --keep-path-links, while
LinuxAppRemoval supplies only the staged CLI path to KcapLinkRemover; because the remover
compares fully resolved targets, it misses a link into the mount, including one whose target has
disappeared, and image removal can proceed after a zero-result scan.

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/UninstallRunViewModel.cs[90-123]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
When AppImage CLI staging fails, setup can create a persistent `kcap` link into the temporary mount. Linux uninstall checks only the staged CLI target, preserves PATH links during CLI uninstall, and can trash the image while leaving the mount-backed link dangling.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Platform/Linux/LinuxAppRemoval.cs[40-47]
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Setup/KcapLinkRemover.cs[1-56]
- src/Capacitor.App/Platform/Linux/AppImageInstall.cs[29-46]

## Recommended Fix
Make uninstall identify and remove links created for the AppImage mount as well as the staged CLI, including links whose mount has disappeared. Inspect the symlink’s raw target so a dangling link can still be matched, and retain the check that protects links owned by other CLI installations. Log removal failures as the existing loop does. Alternatively, prevent setup from installing a persistent link to the temporary mount.

MoveWithoutReplacing includes an added comment saying the fallback handles a libc that predates
the wrapper. That historical wording describes how the implementation evolved rather than the
current fallback rationale, so future readers receive change-history instead of a stable
explanation.
Agent Prompt
## Issue description
The comment near the libc fallback refers to a library that predates the wrapper, which is historical change narration rather than a description of current behavior.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Platform/Linux/LinuxAppRemoval.cs[143-145]

## Recommended Fix
Replace the historical wording with a stable explanation that the fallback is used when `renameat2` is unavailable or unsupported, without describing how the wrapper evolved.

2. An old data directory survives uninstall 🐞 Bug ≡ Correctness

Agent Prompt
## Issue description
A change to `XDG_DATA_HOME` makes uninstall inspect and delete a different staged root from the one an earlier launch used, leaving that root and its command link behind.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Platform/Linux/LinuxAppRemoval.cs[21-23]
- src/Capacitor.App/Platform/Linux/LinuxAppRemoval.cs[42-55]
- src/Capacitor.App/Platform/Linux/AppImageInstall.cs[15-24]

## Recommended Fix
Retain enough installation ownership information to locate previously staged roots and their links across data-home changes. Remove only roots and links verified as belonging to this AppImage installation, while preserving links to unrelated CLI installations.

3. Uninstall succeeds with the cli copy left 🐞 Bug ≡ Correctness

Agent Prompt
## Issue description
A staged-directory deletion failure is logged but does not affect uninstall status, so the AppImage can be trashed while its copied CLI remains.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Platform/Linux/LinuxAppRemoval.cs[49-55]
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/UninstallRunViewModel.cs[101-108]

## Recommended Fix
Make failure to delete the staged root visible to the uninstall runner and stop before trashing the image. Present the remaining path and a retry or manual-cleanup instruction rather than reporting the uninstall as complete.

4. A concurrent image replacement can be lost 🐞 Bug ☼ Reliability

Agent Prompt
## Issue description
The link-and-unlink fallback can unlink a different file if the AppImage path changes between its two operations.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Platform/Linux/LinuxAppRemoval.cs[139-153]

## Recommended Fix
Do not unlink the source through a pathname after a separate link operation. If a no-replace atomic move is unavailable, leave the image in place and use the existing manual-Trash completion path rather than risking deletion of a replacement.

5. Links made while the cli ran from the mount survive uninstall 🐞 Bug ≡ Correctness

Agent Prompt
## Issue description

Ensure the uninstall relaunch uses a persistent executable.

RelaunchForUninstallAsync registers Process.Start(start) on desktop.Exit, while DesktopHost.NewCopy uses Executable as the launch path. If Executable points into the AppImage FUSE mount, the relaunch can lose its executable and assemblies when the original process exits. The uninstall process can then fail before RunUninstallMode completes.

Use a persistent executable path for the Linux AppImage relaunch, or otherwise preserve the AppImage before shutdown.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Clean up the claimed .trashinfo when the move throws a non-I/O exception.

TrashBundleAsync catches only IOException and UnauthorizedAccessException. The _move delegate calls LibraryImport P/Invokes. A DllNotFoundException or other runtime exception from these calls skips the cleanup in the catch block. The claimed info/<name>.trashinfo file then stays in the Trash and names a file that does not exist. The view model catches the exception and shows a failure line, so the orphan entry is the only lasting effect.

Track the move result and delete the claimed info file in a finally block. The TryDelete call is idempotent, so the existing cleanup on the errno path stays safe.

Keep the window open when the AppImage is unavailable.

The Linux menu checks APPIMAGE only during window setup. If the image is moved or deleted later, the action still calls RelaunchForUninstallAsync, registers an exit handler, and shuts down the current process. NewCopy then targets the stale AppImage path. The child cannot build the uninstall run, so the uninstall does not run and the failure is reported only on stderr.

Check the AppImage when the menu action runs. Keep the window open and provide manual guidance when it is missing.
