Closes #1720 — AI-4066

What & why

"Allow always" on a Claude permission card allowed only that one call: the daemon's hook response put the card's toolAlwaysAllow entry under applyPermissions, a field Claude's PermissionRequest decision does not have, so no rule was saved and the next identical call prompted again. The response now carries it as updatedPermissions: the rules Claude itself suggested in the hook's permission_suggestions for the call's own tool, or a session rule for that tool when it suggested none. An answer naming another tool saves nothing. The card, the server and stored responses keep the toolAlwaysAllow entry, so older servers still work and the hub is untouched. Twin of kurrent-io/kcap-server#2659, which fixes the same response on the server's hook route

Where to look

ClaudePermissions.UpdatesFor. Only suggested addRules updates with behavior: allow, cut to the rules for the call's tool, pass through. Removes, replaces, deny and ask rules, mode and directory changes, and rules for other tools are dropped, so a localSettings rule Claude suggested for that tool is still saved where Claude would save it

Verification

Test Broken to see it red First failing line
Allow always saves the rules Claude suggested, or a session rule for the tool UpdatesFor returning nothing both rows fail
the bridge sends updatedPermissions and no applyPermissions, with suggestions and without the old builder Expected to be false but found True
a mixed-tool suggestion list keeps only the approved tool's rules, and a mismatched toolAlwaysAllow saves nothing suggestions passed through whole, tool not checked both rows fail
a remove, replace, deny or ask suggestion is not saved, and the tool gets its session rule any rule-bearing suggestion kept four rows fail

The bridge's Claude tests asserted the applyPermissions they now refuse; they are reshaped to the real toolAlwaysAllow entry. PermissionIpcTests pass. Not yet checked against a live Claude Code: Allow always, then the same command, expecting no card

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Permission Handling
    • When you choose “always allow,” the approved tool’s suggested permission rules are saved, while suggestions for other tools are excluded.
    • If no eligible rules were suggested for the approved tool, a session-scoped allow rule is saved instead.
    • Suggestions that do not grant permission are not saved. Responses that do not approve a tool for always-allow do not save suggested rules.
    • Other permission decisions continue to follow their existing behavior.

The card, server and stored responses keep their toolAlwaysAllow entry, which older servers still
send, so it is translated only where the hook response is built.

Walkthrough

Claude always-allow decisions now use matching permission suggestions to build updatedPermissions. If no suggestions match the approved tool, the response contains a session-scoped rule. The bridge passes permission suggestions and the tool name into Claude response construction.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to be78c

Allow-always responses now exclude replacement rules and provide the intended permission update or session fallback. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to be78c

The change requires an explicit always-allow approval and restricts saved rules to the approved tool. No introduced permission bypass was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns how the external permission engine applies and retains rules after interrupted delivery, repeated requests, or rollback.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The authorization scope is the selected tool’s retained rules at their supplied destination, not necessarily one command or path. When suggestions do not qualify, the generated rule names only the tool and is intended to authorize that whole tool for the session. The external engine determines the effective scope of persistent destinations.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Hook requests are admitted through a loopback listener with live-token and vendor checks. Request-supplied suggestions alone cannot create saved rules: response construction additionally requires an allow decision and an exact approval-marker/tool-name match.
  • observed — Existing pre-tool processing is counterevidence against saved native allow rules bypassing configured approval-policy restrictions. Rendered sessions evaluate in tighten-only mode, which still returns matching deny or ask outcomes, and the hook emits those decisions before constructing a server client. This does not verify external hook execution or rule precedence at runtime.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing broker settles each pending request once under a shared lock. Shutdown claims a denial unless another settlement already won; late server decisions cannot replace that winner. Response writes have a bounded timeout and abort on failure. These controls protect local settlement ordering, but do not establish exactly-once external permission persistence or recovery after partial delivery.

Explanation

Issue #1720 requires Claude’s “Allow always” decision to save a rule for the call’s tool. ClaudePermissions.UpdatesFor accepts only a matching toolAlwaysAllow entry, keeps matching addRules entries with behavior: allow, and creates a session rule when no eligible suggestion exists. LocalPermissionBridge sends these entries as updatedPermissions and omits applyPermissions for Claude allow responses. Unit tests cover suggested rules, tool filtering, fallback rules, rejected rule types, mismatched tools, and response fields. The issue’s web path is described as probable, so the unchanged hub is not an unmet requirement.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The production changes are limited to the #1720 Claude permission response path. ClaudePermissions.cs translates the existing toolAlwaysAllow approval into Claude permission updates. LocalPermissionBridge.cs passes suggestions and the tool name into that translation. The test changes verify the new behavior and update assertions for updatedPermissions. No unrelated production change is demonstrated.

Persist Claude Allow always decisions with updatedPermissions

AI Description

• Translate Allow always decisions into Claude’s supported updatedPermissions field so rules
 persist.
• Reuse Claude’s suggested rules, falling back to a session rule when none are supplied.
• Preserve the existing card and server format; test both response paths.

High-Level Assessment

Translate at the hook-response boundary. This fixes Claude’s contract without changing the card, stored decision, or server-facing format used by older servers. Moving the translation upstream would expand the compatibility surface without a clear benefit.

Remediation recommended

1. JSON type checks ignore shared helpers ✓ Resolved
Description
UpdatesFor and Text compare JsonElement.ValueKind directly instead of using the available
type-check helpers. Array, object, and string inputs reaching these paths use the modified
permission translation logic and bypass the repository's shared JSON shape-checking convention.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The modified UpdatesFor method uses a ValueKind pattern and direct object comparison, and the
modified Text helper directly compares ValueKind to JsonValueKind.String. These are new or
modified direct JSON shape checks covered by the checklist rule.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The changed Claude permission parsing code performs direct `JsonElement.ValueKind` checks, contrary to the shared JSON helper convention.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/ClaudePermissions.cs[23-26]
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/ClaudePermissions.cs[46-47]

## Recommended Fix
Replace the direct array, object, and string `ValueKind` checks with the corresponding `JsonElementExtensions` methods, such as `IsArray()`, `IsObject()`, and `IsString()`, while preserving the existing parsing behavior.
