Keep a user's submodule and signing config out of worktree prep - #1921
A hosted agent could not start in a repository with a submodule once the user had submodule.recurse=true: the worktree's reset --hard HEAD recursed into a submodule whose linked-worktree gitdir is only a stub, and failed the launch. Worktree prep now overrides the user's config for every git call it makes that such a setting can break. The worktree reset and the borrowed snapshot's checkout never recurse into submodules, the review fetch never fetches them, and the standalone snapshot's bookkeeping commit is never signed.
The standalone snapshot also keeps the bytes it copied:
the user's core.autocrlf/core.safecrlf are pinned off;
the user's attributes file is replaced by the snapshot's own, which holds * !text !eol (both reset to unspecified, since git resolves each attribute on its own; -text would mark every path binary and void a project rule that sets only eol). Git ranks that file above the machine's attributes and below the project's .gitattributes, so the agent's later git commands still convert only what the project asks for (.git/info/attributes would outrank the project);
the snapshot's own add, diff and commit also run with GIT_ATTR_NOSYSTEM=1
Where to look
The review fetch failed even with no user config: fetching a head that moves a submodule fetches that submodule from its own remote by default, and an unreachable or credentialed remote failed the launch
kcap-cli#1793 edits the same reset --hard HEAD call, so it will need a trivial rebase
Submodule contents are still not populated in the worktree, as before
Verification
Test
Red, without the overrides
Green
Worktree in a repo with a submodule, global submodule.recurse=true
git reset --hard HEAD failed: fatal: gitfile does not point to a valid repository
passes
Borrowed snapshot, global submodule.recurse=true and submodule.active=.
git checkout --detach HEAD failed, same error
passes
Standalone snapshot, global commit.gpgsign=true with an unrunnable gpg.program
Worktree and borrowed-snapshot creation now succeeds with Git settings that enable recursive submodules, including when a submodule remote is unavailable.
Standalone snapshots preserve applicable user and project attribute rules, including filter rules, and maintain file line endings across a wider range of Git configurations while excluding machine-level attribute rules.
Snapshot creation succeeds when user settings enable commit signing or strict line-ending conversion.
A fetch of a head that moves a submodule fails without any user config too: git fetches the
submodule from its own remote by default, and a review launch has no business reaching it

It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Git worktree operations now disable submodule recursion. Standalone snapshots preserve user attribute rules while controlling text and EOL attributes, line-ending conversion, system attributes, and commit signing. Git command helpers accept environment overrides.

Fetch and checkout commands disable submodule recursion. Tests cover user settings that enable recursion and worktree creation after a submodule remote becomes unavailable.
Control standalone snapshot Git settings src/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon/Services/WorktreeManager.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon.Tests.Unit/Services/WorktreeManagerUserGitConfigTests.cs
Standalone snapshots preserve user attribute rules while resetting text and EOL attributes. Staging and the initial commit use overrides for system attributes and line-ending conversion; the initial commit also disables signing. Capture helpers pass environment overrides to Git. Tests cover attribute precedence, line endings, system attributes, and signing settings.
Standalone snapshots can silently change committed file bytes under reachable Git attribute configuration, so these configuration paths should be corrected before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to a3a8e
The changes limit unintended submodule access and signing during workspace preparation without adding production entrypoints or privileges. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Residual uncertainty concerns ambient attributes outside line-ending settings and recovery from interrupted preparation.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed operations remain scoped to the selected source repository and its prepared worktrees or snapshots under the existing daemon process identity. Disabling recursive fetch removes preparation-time contact with submodule remotes; the existing fetch from the configured origin remains.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Git overrides use the existing configuration transport and are appended after inherited configuration entries. Filter inventory failures reject materialization rather than allowing unknown drivers. The new environment forwarding applies GIT_ATTR_NOSYSTEM directly to the relevant child processes.
inferred — The attributes policy is not complete isolation from host attributes. It copies the effective user attributes file and resets only text and eol, intentionally preserving other rules. Attribute-file lookup does not exclude system configuration. Consequently, the inspected implementation supports a line-ending policy, not an unconditional byte-preservation guarantee for every ambient attribute.

Explanation
The title "Keep a user's submodule and signing config out of worktree prep" matches the main change. The PR stops user Git config (submodule recursion, commit signing, and line-ending/attribute settings) from affecting worktree preparation and snapshot creation in WorktreeManager. The title names two of the main config areas. It omits the line-ending and attribute work, but it does not mislead and it does not describe anything absent from the changeset.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs
Evidence
The non-empty guard discards a successful empty result, after which the method looks up the default
path. CreateSnapshotAttributesFile copies whichever path the method returns.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
A successful lookup of an explicitly empty core.attributesFile falls through to the default global attributes path, allowing rules the user disabled to be copied into the snapshot.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon/Services/WorktreeManager.cs[543-553]
## Recommended Fix
Distinguish a missing config entry from a successful lookup with an empty value. Return no user attributes file for the explicitly empty value, and test the case with a default global attributes file present.

2. Paths with spaces lose attribute rules✗ Dismissed
Description
UserAttributesFileAsync calls Trim() on the path returned by Git before using it to locate the
user's attributes file. When a configured path begins or ends with a space, the lookup targets a
different file and the snapshot silently omits the user's rules.
ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs
Evidence
Both Git path results are trimmed before use; the resulting path is checked for existence and, if
found, its contents become the snapshot's configured attributes file.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
Git can return an attributes-file path whose filename begins or ends with spaces, but trimming the whole output changes that path before the file is copied.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon/Services/WorktreeManager.cs[543-549]
## Recommended Fix
Remove only the line terminator from Git's output, preserving path whitespace, for both the configured path and the reported default. Add coverage using an attributes-file name with a leading or trailing space.

3. Git tests can oversubscribe subprocesses 📘 Rule violation▣ Testability
Description
WorktreeManagerUserGitConfigTests is marked only with bare [NotInParallel] and lacks
[ParallelLimiter<SubprocessLimit>]. Its tests create repositories and invoke git repeatedly, so
the suite bypasses the shared subprocess limit and can run heavy child processes at full
parallelism.
ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs
Evidence
The new test class performs real repository and git-process operations but declares only
[NotInParallel]; the checklist requires classes that spawn real subprocesses to use
[ParallelLimiter<SubprocessLimit>] rather than relying on [NotInParallel].
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
`WorktreeManagerUserGitConfigTests` starts many real git subprocesses but uses only `[NotInParallel]`, so it does not participate in the test assembly's shared subprocess limit.
## Fix Focus Areas
- test/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon.Tests.Unit/Services/WorktreeManagerUserGitConfigTests.cs[12-13]
## Recommended Fix
Add `[ParallelLimiter<SubprocessLimit>]` to the test class so all real git subprocesses share the global limiter. Retain the bare `[NotInParallel]` attribute if needed to isolate the process-wide `GIT_CONFIG_GLOBAL` environment changes.

Reset working-tree-encoding in the generated attributes file.
A reachable standalone snapshot copies the configured user or machine core.attributesFile, then appends only * !text !eol. A rule such as * working-tree-encoding=UTF-16 therefore remains active. During git add -A, Git can re-encode working-tree bytes before storing them in the snapshot index, even with core.autocrlf=false.
Append !working-tree-encoding with the existing resets. Project .gitattributes rules still take precedence.

Exclude system Git configuration while resolving the user attributes file.
When the system Git config sets core.attributesFile and the user config does not, UserAttributesFileAsync selects that system path. CreateSnapshotAttributesFile copies its rules into the private snapshot file. The later GIT_ATTR_NOSYSTEM=1 override cannot remove those copied rules because it only affects Git’s system attributes lookup. A copied working-tree-encoding rule can therefore change the bytes staged by git add -A, violating the snapshot contract.
Use GIT_CONFIG_NOSYSTEM=1 for both lookup commands. This is separate from resetting working-tree-encoding: the lookup must not import system rules at all.
