Request changes for one confirmed P2 correctness defect; the fix is needed and its general producer/consumer design is sound.
Reviewed 0e61b954b493488865e153a44889d6090aa4beef against main at 02f0bf7b21fd98da0d6f6935d3c49503d6978738 (nine files). On that target, AddEventDirect releases a full-queue event without metric/profile accounting. Existing worker-channel overflow handling establishes the intended count-and-mark-partial behavior; increasing queue capacity would only postpone the problem.
The inline finding describes a registration/abandonment interleaving that defeats the new pending-marker guarantee and can leave an affected profile Full. Both independent correctness and architecture reviews identified it. Ordinary aggregation, empty-container handling, mutex-protected draining and deduplication look consistent; no new dependencies, configuration or persisted formats are introduced. Shutdown accounting remains explicitly best-effort for in-flight tracer callbacks, and terminal profile snapshots retain the pre-existing asynchronous-finalization limitation; these are not additional change-related blockers.
History: #219 and #327 established drop handling; #818 added the OTEL counter. #762 includes a maintainer request to retain dropped-event checks and was ultimately approved/merged. #924 fixes syscall fetch/termination loss, while #918 explicitly excludes ordered-queue overflow from its reproduction. Neither supersedes this fix. Closed #525 was explicitly superseded by #533 after worker-pool discussion, not rejected; this PR preserves that callback architecture. Closed #603 questions whether batch removal is still needed, with no explicit rejection decision; this PR does not remove batching. Closed #100 records memory/pool experiments, not rejection of drop accounting.
All-state indexed PR/issue searches used ordered queue, ordered_event_queue, ReportDroppedEvent, events_dropped, dropped events, queue full and partial profile, plus closed/unmerged dropped/queue searches, capped at 100 results per query. No duplicate/superseding fix found; indexed text searches do not cover every diff or unlinked effort.
Validation: gofmt -l was clean for all nine files. In a network-isolated bubblewrap environment without credentials/host home, go test -v -count=1 ./... on a minimal extracted-routine harness fails the controlled missing→insert→abandon→retry regression and passes an ordinary pending-drop control. The harness retains the relevant PR routines, stubs logging/data types and adds scheduling hooks; this is an algorithm reproduction, not a full-package test. Full package tests, race detection, vet/build and the author's reported standalone-test failure were not independently verified: preparing the credential-free Go 1.27 Docker environment failed with Docker storage no space left on device. DCO, GitGuardian and CodeRabbit passed; test CI, component tests and benchmarks await approval. CI availability is not the reason for this verdict. Earlier bot findings are addressed in current code apart from the newly identified retry gap.

[P2] Preserve the drop if registration disappears before the retry
A valid interleaving loses the only marker: (1) the initial lookup finds no entry; (2) registration inserts clean entry A; (3) recordDropForUnregisteredContainer sees A and returns false; (4) registration fails and abandonEntry removes A before this lookup; (5) this lookup returns ErrContainerNotFound and returns without recording anything. Since A never received the drop, abandonment carries nothing forward. A replayed registration can then create clean entry B and save a Full profile despite the reported loss.
A deterministic extracted-routine test reproduces this; the existing two-actor tests cover registration and abandonment separately. Retry the mark-or-record operation until the drop is applied or retained, or synchronize it with entry removal. Add a controlled regression covering insertion and abandonment between the lookups.

@matthyx I’ve pushed a retry fix and added a deterministic regression test for the insert–abandon–retry sequence
…ueue When the ordered event queue was full, AddEventDirect released the event and signalled the alert channel but never counted the drop. The node_agent.ebpf.events_dropped.total metric was undercounted and the affected container profile could still be reported as Complete. Record the drop (event type and container ID) under the queue mutex that the callback already holds, and apply it from the existing processing loop: add the count to the dropped-events metric with reason="ordered_queue_full" and call ReportDroppedEvent once per affected container. Events without a container ID are only counted in the metric. No per-container lock, metric or profile work happens in the eBPF callback. Signed-off-by: Vanshika <pahalvanshikaa@gmail.com>
… drain on shutdown A drop reported for a container whose profile entry was not registered yet was discarded, so the profile could later be saved as Complete. ReportDroppedEvent now keeps a bounded, expiring pending marker for such a container and addContainerEntryIfAbsent applies it when the entry is inserted, atomically under containersMu. Stop() could also return before the last ordered-queue drops were accounted for. The event-processing loop now signals when it exits, and Stop() waits for it, after the tracers are stopped, before a final accountQueueDrops(). Drops already drained are not counted again. Signed-off-by: Vanshika <pahalvanshikaa@gmail.com>
…oned registrations A drop recorded on a container entry that was later abandoned was lost with it, so a replayed registration started from a clean entry and its profile could be saved as Complete. abandonEntry now re-records the drop for the container when it removes the entry, and clears the entry's data under its lock so a concurrent report falls through to the not-found path instead of being applied to the discarded entry. ReportDroppedEvent also ignores an empty container ID instead of storing a pending marker for it; callers still count such drops in the dropped-events metric. Correct the shutdown comments: tracer Stop only cancels the gadget context and does not wait for in-flight callbacks, so drops recorded after the final drain are not accounted. Signed-off-by: Vanshika <pahalvanshikaa@gmail.com>
… drop markers overflow When pendingDrops is full, the marker for a new container was logged and discarded, so that container could later register and be saved as Complete. Record when the overflow happened and mark any container registered within MaxWaitForSharedContainerData of it as partial. The pending set stays bounded, and the fallback expires on its own because an unregistered container cannot register after that window. Signed-off-by: Vanshika <pahalvanshikaa@gmail.com>
…gistration is abandoned mid-report ReportDroppedEvent returned on ErrContainerNotFound after the pending-marker check had declined because an entry existed. If that registration was abandoned before the next lookup, the drop was neither applied nor retained and a replayed registration could be saved as Full. Loop back to the record step so the drop is always applied to a live entry or kept as a pending marker, and cover the interleaving with a deterministic test. Re-reviewed 58f81052751323d9ff5855e23a512b63634288fc against main at 395a222540f18977b5b584906839439cc1b381bd. Request changes for one new P2 test failure.
The original registration/abandonment race is resolved: the loop retries until the drop is applied or retained, and my controlled extracted-routine reproduction now passes. The new regression then dereferences the abandoned entry's cleared data and panics before verifying the pending marker and replacement Partial profile; details and a focused remedy are inline. Both independent review lanes confirmed this. No other new blockers found; the retry/test seam introduces no lock-order concern.
The ordered-queue accounting remains needed and unchanged. I inspected target movement, including the separate io_uring fix and cache/CI changes; those do not supersede the overflow fix. Refreshed all-state ordered queue and ReportDroppedEvent searches (100-result caps) found no superseding PR. Related decisions and bounded-search limitations remain in the original review: #219/#327/#818 establish drop handling/metrics, #924 addresses a separate syscall-loss path, #525 was superseded rather than rejected, and closed #603 supplies no explicit rejection. Earlier bot concerns remain addressed; existing finalization/shutdown limitations are not new blockers.
Fresh validation: formatting is clean for all nine changed Go files. go test -v -count=1 ./... in a credential-free, network-isolated bubblewrap harness using extracted latest PR routines passes the production retry scenario and reproduces the new test's nil-pointer panic. This stubs logging/data types and is not execution of the complete repository test. Full package/race tests, build and vet were not run this turn. DCO, GitGuardian and CodeRabbit passed; Go CI, component tests and benchmarks await approval. Missing CI is not the reason for requesting changes.
Immediately before submission, confirmed unchanged head/base, open/non-draft/mergeable state and no duplicate/new findings.

[P2] Avoid reading the abandoned entry's cleared data
The new regression deterministically panics here. Its hook calls abandonEntry("c1", entryA) at line 301, which sets entryA.data = nil (container_operations.go:218). dropped(entryA) then dereferences e.data.droppedEvents in the helper at line 30. Consequently this test cannot reach the pending-marker and replacement-profile assertions.
Replace this assertion with require.Nil(t, entryA.data). If checking that A never received the drop is useful, assert require.False(t, dropped(entryA)) immediately before the hook abandons A. Keep the later marker/Partial assertions and rerun this regression. The production retry fix itself resolves the previously reported race.
When the ordered event queue was full,
AddEventDirectreleased the event and signalled the alert channel without accounting for the dropped event. This causednode_agent.ebpf.events_dropped.totalto undercount drops and could leave an affected container profile marked asComplete. This change records dropped events by event type and container ID under the queue mutex, then accounts for them in the existing processing loop. The metric is updated with
reason="ordered_queue_full", andReportDroppedEventis called once per affected container per drain. Events without a container ID are counted in the metric but are not reported to the profile manager.Overview
