fix(complete): treat completion candidates as text and keep top-level completers out of mounts - #1581
Conversation
The generated zsh script turned the extensions line into the pattern it hands `_files -g`, which zsh expands as a glob with qualifiers. Text such as `x)(e.touch\ f.` in that line therefore ran as code for every file the glob reached. The script now keeps only extensions made of letters, digits, `_`, `.`, `+` and `-`, falls back to unfiltered paths when none remain, and writes a single extension bare: `*.(toml)` was read as glob qualifiers and matched nothing. fish compared extensions with `string match "*.$extension"`, so a `*` in one widened the filter. It now tests the suffix literally. bash already compared quoted text. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A `complete` node is looked up by argument name, top level first, so an argument of a mounted command (a task, say) named `<tool>` or `<prefix>` was completed by the mounting spec's `complete "tool"`. That completer even outranked one the mounted command declared for itself. A mounted command now consults only the completers it declares, in its own `complete` nodes or inside its `arg` nodes. The host's own commands, however deeply nested, keep the top-level lookup unchanged. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The bash script `usage generate completion bash` writes passed every candidate through `compgen -W`, which expands each word as shell input. A candidate printed by a `run=` completer, such as `$(cmd)` or a backquoted command, ran at <Tab>, and `*` became the files in the working directory. The `completion-init` handler split an unquoted `$(...)`, which globbed candidates the same way. Both now read complete-word's output one line at a time into COMPREPLY. The per-binary script keeps the prefix filter `compgen` applied, as a literal string comparison. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

`Spec::for_view` moves the promoted command's own named completers, and those of the globals it carries, to the materialized spec's top level. A mounted command skips the top level when it looks up a completer, so a view whose root was a mounted command lost all of them. They now stay on the promoted command when it is mounted. Written out as KDL, both places are the same top-level `complete` nodes, so the emitted spec is unchanged. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The mounted-completers test wrote the fixture's absolute path into a KDL string. On Windows its backslashes are KDL escapes, so the spec failed to parse. The mount now reads the fixture by its file name, from the directory completion runs in. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

On the KDL round-trip point from the review summary: not changed. 🤖 Addressed by Claude Code |
When a view promotes a mounted command, the completers of the global flags it carries went into the command's own completer map. A carried `--pick <tool>` then lent the host's `tool` completer to the mounted command's `<tool>` argument, which declares none. Each carried completer now goes on its flag's argument instead. A completer the promoted command declares under the same name still wins, as it does for other views. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Completing a host global flag's value inside a mounted command, such as
ex run bare --pick <TAB>, no longer offers the host's top-level completer. The mounted-command branch ofSpec::completerreturns only the mounted command's own completers. The host completer that the carried flag needs is reached only through thefor_viewpath, andexis not a view program here. The host completer is needed for the flag value, but the positional
<tool>must not receive it. Resolve host global flag values through the host's top-level completers in the flag-value path, and leave the mounted-positional rule inSpec::completerunchanged. Add a test that completes the flag value through the canonical spec, not only throughfor_view("bare").🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

The parser still binds a flag of the mounting CLI typed inside a mounted command, as in `ex run task --pick <TAB>`. Its value was completed from the mounted command, which no longer reads the mounting spec's top-level completers, so the host's `complete "tool"` stopped answering for it. A flag the mounted program does not declare is now completed from the nearest command above the mount. Arguments of the mounted command still do not inherit the host's completers. Deciding whether a flag awaiting its value inside a mounted command was the host's compared names only. A mounted command that re-declares `--pick` has a flag of the same name as the host's `-p --pick`, so the host's `-p`, which still binds the host's flag, was completed from the mounted command without the host's completers. Ownership now follows the spellings that reach that exact declaration: the flag is the mounted program's when completion offers one of them. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Ownership of a flag awaiting its value inside a mounted command was read off its spellings: if completion offered any spelling that reached it, the flag counted as the mounted program's. A nested mounted command that declares `-p --other` still has the parser bind the host's `-p --pick`, so `ex run outer inner -p <TAB>` and `--pick <TAB>` lost the host's completer. The flag is now the mounted program's only when one of its commands, from the mount boundary down, declares exactly the flag the parser bound. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…lared Completion decided whether a flag awaiting its value inside a mounted command was the host's by matching it against declarations after the fact. The parser merges, re-declares and shadows flags on its way down, so a merged flag, such as a child's `-p --pick` folded into a mounted parent's global `--pick`, matched no declaration and was taken for the host's. The parser now records provenance as it merges each command's flags. A flag a mounted command declares, or a root flag a mount merges into the command it sits on, belongs to the mounted program. A flag built by merging a re-declaration into an inherited global belongs to whoever owned that global. `ParseOutput::is_mounted_flag` exposes this, and complete-word uses it, so ownership follows the parse for every alias, merge and shadowing case. Completion scripts generated by usage could run code taken from completion candidates, and a mounted command could pick up completers by name from the spec that mounts it. This matters for tools like mise, whose completion candidates can come from project files.
What changes
_files -gpattern, and zsh runs code in glob qualifiers. An extensions line such asx)(e.touch\ pwned.rantouch pwned. The script now builds the pattern only from plain extension names (letters, digits,_ . + -) and falls back to plain_fileswhen none remain. This also fixes a bug where a single extension produced*.(toml), which zsh read as glob qualifiers and which matched nothing; one extension is now*.toml.*in an extension no longer matches every file.usage generate completion bash): candidates were passed throughcompgen -W, which expands them as shell input, so arun=completer printing$(touch pwned)ran that command on Tab. Thecompletion-inithandler also globbed candidates through an unquoted$(…). Both now read one candidate per line as plain text. A candidate containing a space is now a single entry instead of being split in two.mountnow uses only the completers it declares itself, in its owncompletenodes or inside itsargnodes. Before, a mounted command's argument named like a top-level completer (for example<tool>) inherited that completer, even over one the mounted command declared. Specs without mounts behave as before.Compatibility
