Why

The Max plan's $100 monthly API credit expires every cycle and the Console is the only place its spend shows. This service turns Anthropic's cost report into jdwlabs_anthropic_* Prometheus series so the platform can chart and alert on it. Deployment, alerts and dashboard follow in a platform PR. Ticket: JDWLABS-783.

Needs attention

  • apps/backend/anthropic-spend-exporter/main.go: a refresh is whole-or-nothing; a failed page keeps the old view and does not move the last-refresh timestamp, so the staleness alert can fire.
  • anthropic.go: amounts arrive in cents as strings; NaN, Inf and non-USD are rejected; 50-page and 8 MiB caps.
  • Needs an Admin API key, which individual Console orgs do not offer, so this is not deployable for the current org yet.

Verified

  • go vet, go test -race for the module
  • nx build, lint, test, format:check
  • End-to-end run against a fake Anthropic server: /metrics shows the expected series

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Anthropic spend reporting, with costs grouped by workspace, model, service tier, and cost type.
    • Added Prometheus metrics for spend, budget, billing-cycle dates, and refresh status, along with health checks.
    • Added settings for the billing-cycle day, budget, API credentials, and refresh interval.
    • Added container image builds for the exporter.
  • Reliability
    • Failed cost reports preserve the last successful metrics, and workspace names are retained when a workspace lookup fails.

Refresh Failure Handling

The refresh logic in refreshOnce function (lines 83-110) handles failures in workspace listing gracefully by keeping the previous names map, but it does not update the last refresh timestamp when a failure occurs. This could cause staleness alerts to incorrectly fire because the timestamp remains unchanged even though the refresh cycle encountered an error. The issue is specifically in the handling of refreshesFailed increment and the lastRefreshUnix update, which only happens on successful refreshes.

if err != nil {
	r.view.refreshesFailed.Add(1)
	r.log.Error("refresh failed", "err", err)
	return
}

costs := make(map[costSeries]float64, len(byID))
for series, usd := range byID {
	series.workspace = r.workspaceLabel(series.workspace)
	// += because two workspaces can share a display name.
	costs[series] += usd
}
r.view.replace(costs, start, end)
r.view.refreshesOK.Add(1)
r.view.lastRefreshUnix.Store(r.now().Unix())

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds a Go exporter that retrieves Anthropic workspace and cost data, refreshes spend metrics, and serves health and Prometheus endpoints. It also adds billing-cycle calculations, tests, Docker build files, and Nx build and release configuration.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 43e21

No blocking exporter issue is established. Deployment still requires an Anthropic Admin API key, which the current organization does not offer.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2fd26

The exporter introduces a privileged credential and unauthenticated billing metrics. Collection failures preserve the previous view, and no exploitable security condition was established. Deployment access restrictions remain unverified, so the assessment does not establish production isolation.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A caller that can reach metrics can read the collected organization billing breakdown, including workspace labels. Process compromise could expose the Admin key and its granted authority; the actual credential scopes and network-reachable audience were not supplied.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — External response fields become metric labels, with escaping for backslashes, quotes, and newlines. Collection rejects non-USD and nonfinite amounts, limits each response to 8 MiB, and limits each listing to 50 pages. These are finite collection bounds, not an aggregate memory or series-cardinality budget.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Refresh failures do not advance the success timestamp, allowing consumers to detect stale data independently of process health. Deployment and alert rules are deferred, so the effectiveness of that downstream detection remains unverified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before deployment, restrict metrics access to authorized monitoring clients and document where transport protection and access control are enforced.
  • proposed — Constrain the credential-bearing client to the intended HTTPS origin and reject redirects, or explicitly enforce equivalent destination controls. The current operator-configured base and default redirect policy do not themselves establish an attacker-controlled credential leak.

Comment thread apps/backend/anthropic-spend-exporter/main.go
The refresh timestamp was stored after the view lock was released, so a
scrape could pair the new costs with the previous refresh time. It now
lives under the same lock as the costs and cycle window.
