Why

After the user-read cutover to identity-service the body has profileId, not profile. The usersui admin page showed "Add Profile" for users who have one, with no addresses and undefined address/icon action targets, and the delete dialog showed no profile.

Needs attention

  • users.service.ts withProfile/getUserWithProfile: settle the profile on the user (embedded kept; null profileId skips the request; a hung lookup is dropped after 10s, a constant local to this service because the repo has no timeout convention). Builds on getUserProfile from the account-menu change.
  • user.component.ts:62, users-actions-button-cell-renderer.component.ts deleteUser: use them. Admin reads of other users' profiles pass RuleAdminOrSelfByUserID (rules.go:163).
  • Write paths (delete address/icon, edit navigation) took ids from user.profile; fixed by the same hydration. Create/update forms already use ProfilesService.

Risk / rollout

Frontend only; needs a usersui release. JVM path adds no request.

Verified

  • nx affected --uncommitted -t lint test build: pass
  • nx format:check: clean
  • New Go-shaped specs failed before the fix

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • User details and delete confirmations now include profile information even when a user record contains only a profile ID.
    • If a profile cannot be found or its lookup takes too long, user details still load with an empty profile.

PR Reviewer Guide 🔍

Here are some key observations to aid the review process:

⏱️ Estimated effort to review: 3 🔵🔵🔵⚪⚪
🧪 PR contains tests
🔒 No security concerns identified
⚡ Recommended focus areas for review

Potential Race Condition

The getUserProfile method in UsersService returns a provisional null value using startWith(null) while the HTTP request is in flight. This could lead to a brief flicker or incorrect UI state if the calling component renders based on the intermediate null value before receiving the actual profile data. While the comment indicates this is intentional for "slow or hung profile service", it's worth verifying that the UI components properly handle this case.

  return of(SIGNED_OUT_VIEW);
}
return this.usersService
Profile Fetching Logic

The getUserProfile method fetches the profile via /api/profiles/by-user/{userId}. If the userId in the user object is incorrect or the user doesn't exist, this could result in an unexpected error or failure to load the profile. Ensure that the userId used in the request matches the expected user ID from the data source.

  `${this.environment.AUTH_BASE_URL}/api/profiles/by-user/${user.id}`,
  { headers: headers },
)
Data Consistency

In the deleteUser method, this.usersService.withProfile(this.params.data) is called to ensure the user object has the profile data before opening the dialog. However, if the profile fetching fails or times out, the dialog might still display stale or incomplete data. Consider adding error handling or a timeout mechanism to prevent hanging or displaying invalid data.

this.usersService.withProfile(this.params.data).subscribe((user) => {
  const dialogRef = this.dialog.open(UserDialogComponent, {
    data: {
      title: 'Delete User',
      type: 'readonly',
      action: 'delete',
      ...user,
    },
    minWidth: '50%',
  });
  dialogRef.afterClosed().subscribe((result: User) => {
    if (result) {
      this.usersService.deleteUser(result.id).subscribe();
    }
  });
});

📝 Walkthrough

UsersService adds methods that return users with resolved profiles, using a 10-second timeout and a null profile fallback. UserComponent uses the new lookup when loading a user. The delete action resolves profile data before opening its dialog. Tests cover successful lookups, timeouts, 404 responses, embedded profiles, navigation, and dialog data.

withProfile returns the user with the final profile lookup result. A timeout after 10 seconds or a 404 produces profile: null. getUserWithProfile fetches a user and resolves its profile. Tests cover successful lookup, timeout, and 404.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 71668

A stalled profile lookup now falls back to a user with no profile after ten seconds, allowing the detail page and delete dialog to continue. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains from the reviewed change.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 71668

The profile lookup remains protected by server-side admin/self authorization, and hydration preserves the user identity used for deletion. No material security risk was found to be introduced or worsened by this change.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The added read is user-scoped rather than a bulk profile read. An administrator can resolve other users' profiles; a non-admin must match the authenticated user identity. Client manipulation of the route or grid-row user id does not remove that server-side restriction.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The browser sends its existing bearer token to the profile endpoint. Authorization binds the requested user to the authenticated principal or admin authority before storage access. Hydration preserves User.id, and the delete consumer continues using that id rather than deriving identity from profile data.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The misleading Add Profile fallback does not itself authorize creation or overwrite an existing profile. The inspected create handler independently authorizes the body userId and returns a conflict when the store detects an existing profile. This is an existing control, not a claim that concurrent creation is universally safe.

PR Code Suggestions ✨

Explore these optional code suggestions:

CategorySuggestion                                                                                                                                    Impact
General
Optimize HTTP requests for user and profile data

The current implementation makes two separate HTTP requests to fetch user data and
profile data. This can be optimized by using a single request that includes the
profile information when available, reducing latency and network overhead.

libs/frontend/container/feature/core/src/lib/main/main.component.ts [86-95]

       return this.usersService
-        .getUser(userId)
-        .pipe(
-          switchMap((user) =>
-            this.usersService
-              .getUserProfile(user)
-              .pipe(map((profile) => accountViewOf(user, profile))),
-          ),
-        );
+        .getUserWithProfile(userId)
+        .pipe(map((user) => accountViewOf(user, user.profile)));
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 8

__

Why: The suggestion correctly identifies that making two separate HTTP requests can be optimized by using a single request via getUserWithProfile. This improves performance by reducing latency and network overhead, which is a significant functional improvement.

Medium
Improve handling of undefined profile IDs

The getUserProfile method currently returns a null value when a profile is not
found, but it doesn't handle the case where the user has no profile ID. This could
lead to unnecessary API calls or inconsistent behavior. Consider explicitly handling
the case where profileId is undefined or null.

libs/frontend/shared/data-access/src/lib/users/users.service.ts [67-87]

   getUserProfile(user: User): Observable<Profile | null> {
     if (user.profile !== undefined) {
       return of(user.profile);
     }
-    if (user.profileId === null) {
+    if (user.profileId === null || user.profileId === undefined) {
       return of(null);
     }
     const token = this.authService.getToken();
     const headers = new HttpHeaders({ Authorization: `Bearer ${token}` });

     return this.http
       .get<Profile>(
         `${this.environment.AUTH_BASE_URL}/api/profiles/by-user/${user.id}`,
         { headers: headers },
       )
       .pipe(
         catchError(() => of(null)),
         startWith(null),
         distinctUntilChanged(),
       );
   }
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 6

__

Why: The suggestion enhances robustness by explicitly checking for undefined profile IDs in addition to null, preventing potential edge-case issues. However, the existing code already handles null and undefined in a similar way through the condition user.profileId === null || user.profileId === undefined, so the improvement is modest.

Comment thread libs/frontend/shared/data-access/src/lib/users/users.service.ts
The admin user page and the delete-user dialog read the embedded user.profile
for the profile form, the addresses and the address/icon action targets.
identity-service returns profileId instead, so on that backend the page offered
Add Profile for users that have one and the action targets were undefined. They
now load the profile through UsersService.withProfile, which keeps using an
embedded profile and skips the lookup when profileId is null. Admins may read
any user's profile through the admin-or-self rule. A lookup left pending is
abandoned after 10s so the page still renders.

Reviewed: the admin user page and delete dialog load the profile through the profile service when the user body carries only profileId, keep the embedded profile when present, and give up on a hung lookup after 10 seconds. Checks green, thread resolved.
