What

After assembly, a joint's physical center can differ from the midpoint of its safe limits, and the two hand servos can be connected to opposite PCA9685 channels. Previously, the firmware always derived each center from min/max and range calibration was only available in setup AP mode.

  • Add persistent per-joint servo_centers. Normalized poses map min → calibrated center → max, preserving each joint's endpoints. Missing or invalid saved centers fall back to the midpoint of the saved limits for compatibility.
  • Let the Servo control page save the selected joint's min/max and center outside setup AP. Validate the range, show any midpoint fallback before saving, preserve other joints' calibration, and update the slider only after a successful save. Clamp active motion targets when limits change so moves can finish.
  • Add swap_hands in Config and the setup wizard to select left=2/right=3 or left=3/right=2. Apply the mapping after reboot to every PWM write, including setup moves and output release.
  • Preserve centers and hand assignment across factory reset, and keep the API reference and user/developer guides in sync.

Related to the calibration workflow introduced in #25.

Compatibility: existing HTTP routes, pin assignments, NVS keys, and stock servo ranges are unchanged. This adds settings and permits saving existing range fields outside setup AP.

Checks

  • Title follows type(scope): summary.
  • Breaking changes reviewed: none under the repository's definition.
  • Firmware build: pio run.
  • Settings validation and motion helpers: pio test -e native — 58 tests passed. On this macOS host, run with DEVELOPER_DIR=/Library/Developer/CommandLineTools.
  • UI: npm run lint --prefix ui and npm test --prefix ui — 52 tests passed.
  • Additional host check: active servo targets terminate after narrowing limits; completed setup electrical moves remain parked outside the saved band.
  • Browser: desktop and mobile checks against a simulated robot, including save behavior, slider updates, and overflow.
  • HTTP docs: web UI API reference, docs/api.md, README, and docs/hardware/testing.md updated together.
  • Settings layers updated; logs report only whether the access token is set.
  • Stock servo ranges are unchanged; movements remain clamped to the saved limits.
  • Hardware tested: the contributor has manually tested the changes on a physical robot.
  • No .env, tokens, Wi-Fi passwords, or generated firmware artifacts included.

Packages, CAD, pinout, and PCB files are unchanged; their change-specific checks do not apply.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Calibrate and save individual servo centers and safe movement limits from Servo control; updates apply immediately.
    • Assign the left and right hands to servo channels 2 and 3. Changes take effect after a restart.
    • Servo movement now maps around each joint’s saved center and stays within its configured limits.
  • Documentation
    • Updated setup, settings, and API guides to explain servo calibration, hand assignment, and which settings are preserved after a factory reset.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds persisted servo centers and configurable hand-channel swapping. It updates normalized motion mapping, channel selection, settings validation and API responses, and adds Servo Control and setup workflows. Servo limits and centers can be saved outside setup AP. Hand-channel changes take effect after reboot.

Changes: Servo calibration and hand-channel settings

Layer / File(s) Summary
Settings validation, persistence, and API
src/settings/*, src/http/settings_handlers.cpp, docs/api.md, docs/settings.md, docs/hardware/testing.md, test/test_settings_validate/*
Settings now store servo centers and hand-channel assignment. Validation checks centers against the resulting servo ranges. Missing or invalid stored centers default to range midpoints, and range updates fit centers to the new ranges. The settings API accepts and returns the new values.
Calibrated motion and channel output
include/servos.h, src/hardware/*, test/test_servo_norm/*, docs/hardware/servos.md, docs/robot-movement.md, docs/api.md
Normalized motion maps through each servo’s saved center. Servo output uses configured channels, and active targets are clamped to current limits. Tests cover center conversion, saturation, and hand-channel mapping.
Calibration and hand-assignment workflows
ui/src/api/types.ts, ui/src/components/*, ui/src/config/*, ui/src/setup/*, ui/src/views/*, ui/src/servos.ts, ui/src/style.css, ui/test/*, README.md, docs/hardware/testing.md, docs/settings.md
Servo Control and the setup wizard can edit and save servo centers and limits. Config and the setup wizard can save hand-channel assignments. UI tests cover validation, save failures, and reboot notices. The documentation describes these settings and their persistence behavior.

Clamp angle_ before re-enabling servo output.

When saved limits shrink below the current angle_, update() can reclamp target_ and return without changing angle_. After release, ensureServoOutput() can then emit a PWM pulse for the stale, out-of-range angle_. The later clamp in writeAngle() is too late because output is enabled first.

Suggested fix
-  const uint16_t pulse = angleToPulse(angle_);
+  angle_ = clampServoAngle(index_, angle_);
+  const uint16_t pulse = angleToPulse(angle_);

Thanks for the careful work on centers, limits outside AP, and docs. Before we add more permanent calibration state, I want to check whether we’re matching the failure modes we actually see on the bench.

Assembly procedure already centers at 90° before seating parts (docs/3d/assembly.md §2a, repeated per joint). §20 then sends people into the wizard mainly to mark safe min/max. It does not teach “set the real visual center first, then choose limits symmetrically around it,” and it doesn’t explain when animation zero should differ from (min+max)/2.

If builders follow that procedure (center at attach, re-check center and tweak after assembly, set min/max as travel about that pose) center and midpoint stay the same by construction. In that world, persistent asymmetric servo_centers plus min→center→max mapping is a lot of settings/UI/firmware surface for a problem we might fix more cheaply by tightening the guide and a guided wizard, for example:

  1. Body / neck / head: set the intended center pose → move to one safe extreme → set the other extreme symmetrically about center (with a short/clamp escape if a cable hits first).
  2. Hands: different: drive both to full down (electrical max on left, min on right), then both to full up; rest lives at the endpoints, so a separate center matters little.

That keeps firmware mid as animation zero and avoids a second permanent calibration axis unless we have a clear bench case where safe stops are necessarily unequal distances from the true neutral even when the horn was seated correctly.

On swap_hands: the real footgun is the three similar leads out of Belly (left / neck / right) and easy L↔R swaps at the labeled sockets (§8 / §15). I’d rather not paper over wrong plugs in NVS. Prefer a stronger pretest while the desk is still open (§15, before Chair screws / BottomCover): move each logical joint and confirm the correct part moves; if not, power down and reseat the connector. Expect correct channels as the norm; software remap is optional later only if support still sees closed-desk mistakes.

Ask: Are we solving “asymmetric safe band vs true neutral” as a common hardware reality, or “people skip 90° seating / set one-sided limits / mix Belly cables”? If the latter, I’d rather invest this energy in assembly §20 + a step-by-step wizard (and a channel smoke-test) than ship servo_centers + swap_hands as the default model. Happy to align either way... I just want complexity to track the real failure mode.
