fix(store, cache, ratelimit): an in-memory map keeps its own copy of every key it stores, so a retried Idempotency-Key replays on epoll and io_uring (celeris#719) - #917

Fixes #719.

Release note: a store.KV implementation that keeps the keys it is given must keep its own copy of each one. On epoll, io_uring and Adaptive the keys the middleware passes (an Idempotency-Key header, a session ID, a rate key from a header) are request strings: views of the connection's receive buffer, valid only during the call. A backend that keeps such a key as given reproduces #719: a retried Idempotency-Key runs a non-idempotent handler again. MemoryKV and the cache's MemoryStore now copy. A backend that writes the key out before it returns (the Redis, Memcached and Postgres adapters) is unaffected. The contract is in the store.KV doc (kv.go).

What was wrong

On epoll and io_uring (and Adaptive, which runs them), request strings are views of the connection's receive buffer. The engine reuses that buffer for the connection's next request, and once the connection closes it pools the buffer for another connection. A map that keeps such a string as a key keeps a key whose bytes change while its hash does not: later lookups with the original key miss, and the entry can no longer be found or deleted.

Three in-memory maps kept the caller's key. Lines are at the branch's base c88d843. The lane built this PR on 2ca5d72; between the two, only middleware/compress/go.{mod,sum} differ, so middleware/ is byte-identical:

  • store.MemoryKV, the default store of idempotency, session and csrf. Set (new key, memory.go:146), SetNX (:239) and Increment (:295) inserted with s.items[key] = .... idempotency.New passes c.Header("idempotency-key") (idempotency.go:77, :133). So a retried Idempotency-Key from another connection, sent after the first connection's next request, did not find its entry and ran the non-idempotent handler again (3 runs instead of 2 below).
  • One more case in the same code: a Go map assignment to a key that is already present replaces the stored key with the one given. Increment re-assigned on every call and SetNX re-assigned an expired entry, so even a key stored as an owned copy was swapped for the caller's view. (Probe: m["key-aaaa"]=1; m[view]=2; overwrite view leaves the map's key reading the new bytes.)
  • cache.MemoryStore (cache/store.go:154-155) kept the key in its map and in its LRU node. The default key is a fresh string, but a KeyGenerator may return c.Path() or a header. The repeat request then missed, and the eviction deleted by a key that no longer matched, so the evicted entry stayed in the map.
  • ratelimit's dynamic-limiter map (with RateFunc): the hit path already cloned (ratelimit.go:125), but the insert of a new limiter (:162) and the double-check re-assignment (:142) used the rate string as given. A rate read from a header got a fresh full-budget limiter each time the key's bytes had changed, and the map filled towards MaxDynamicLimiters.

The fix

site change cost
MemoryKV.Set, SetNX, Increment a new key is stored as strings.Clone(key); an existing entry (live or expired) is updated in place, never re-assigned one copy of the key, once per new key; reads, deletes, updates and contended SetNX copy nothing
cache.MemoryStore.Set the map and the LRU node keep the same copy of a new key once per new key
ratelimit dynamic limiters the insert and the double-check re-assignment clone the rate string, like the hit path once per new limiter (the double-check path only under a race)
store.KV contract (kv.go) documents that keys are borrowed for the call: a backend that keeps a key keeps its own copy, and why (including the map-assignment trap). This is #741 item 1, which the 2026-10-02 consolidation moved into #719 docs

The driver-backed stores (session, csrf and ratelimit adapters for Redis, Memcached and Postgres) write the key to the wire inside the call: driver/redis encodes it in exec2/exec3 before returning (conn.go:531-588), driver/memcached in execText (conn.go:334-360), and the Postgres store passes it as a query argument to ExecContext. They keep nothing, and are unchanged.

Audit: every map keyed by a request string

Tests and controls

The runs below are on the branch as first built on 2ca5d72 (test 9e048c1, fix 1af46a7, CI 60a99a4). It was then rebased onto c88d843 (#823, middleware/compress/go.{mod,sum} only, a separate module); git range-diff shows every patch identical (logs/rebase-c88d843.txt), and the rebased head builds and vets on linux amd64 and arm64 (logs/xcompile-rebased.txt).

Docker golang:1.27 linux/arm64, --cpus 4, seccomp=unconfined, memlock 8 MiB (io_uring runs one worker, the CI shape), kernel 7.0.12-linuxkit, go test -race -v -count=1, CELERIS_REQUIRE_IOURING_WORKERS=1, through the laptop lock. Tallies come from --- PASS/FAIL/SKIP: lines only. Engine tests run std, and epoll, io_uring and Adaptive with sync and async handlers.

test what it does
TestMemoryKVKeepsItsOwnKeys (store, unit) 7 cases store under a view (unsafe.String), overwrite its bytes, then need the entry under the original key and Scan to report it: Set/SetNX/Increment on a new key, SetNX and Increment over an expired key, Increment of an existing owned key, and Set of an existing key as the control
TestMemoryStoreKeepsItsOwnKeys (cache, unit) the same for MemoryStore, plus an eviction that must remove the evicted key from the map
TestRetriedIdempotencyKeyReplays (idempotency) conn A sends k-aaaa then k-bbbb (same layout); conn B retries k-aaaa: must replay, 2 handler runs
TestCustomKeyStillHitsAfterNextRequest (cache) KeyGenerator: c.Path(); conn A /c/aaaa then /c/bbbb; conn B /c/aaaa must HIT
TestDynamicLimiterFoundAfterNextRequest (ratelimit) RateFunc from a header; conn A 3-M then 4-M; conn B 3-M must draw on the first limiter (remaining 1)
control tree result log
failing-first test commit 9e048c1 on main's code 0 of 5 tests pass. Unit: 6 of 7 MemoryKV cases fail (the update-path control passes), MemoryStore fails both checks. Engine: 18 of 18 native arms fail, 3 std arms pass. Native: idempotency 3 handler runs, cache MISS + 3 runs, ratelimit remaining=2; std: 2 runs, HIT, remaining=1 logs/b-ff1.log
head fix 1af46a7 5 of 5 tests, 28 of 28 subtests and arms pass, 0 SKIP logs/b-head1.log
negative control head with the three fix files cp'd back to 2ca5d72 (sha256 proved), then restored by cp (sha256 proved) reverted: the failing-first result again (0 of 5, 18 native arms fail); restored: 5 of 5, 28 of 28 logs/b-neg-reverted.{cp.txt,log}, logs/b-neg-restored.{cp.txt,log}
mutants 9 mutants, each putting the caller's key back into one insert or re-assignment, injected and restored by cp with sha256 proofs 9 of 9 killed: each unit mutant fails exactly its own case; the engine mutants (SetNX insert via idempotency, MemoryStore via cache, the limiter insert) fail all 6 native arms with std passing logs/b-mutants.log

Not covered by a test: the ratelimit double-check re-assignment (:142), which runs only when another goroutine creates the same limiter between the read and the write lock.

Host, before the container runs (deterministic, no engine): the two unit tests on main's code fail the same 6+1 cases (logs/b-unit-ff-host.log).

Whole-package suites at head (-race -v): store 25, cache 18, ratelimit 85, idempotency 9, session 156, csrf 87 top-level PASS, 0 FAIL, 0 SKIP (logs/b-suites.log). GOOS=linux amd64 and arm64 build + vet of the touched packages: 0 failures (logs/xcompile-B.txt). golangci-lint v2.13.2 (GOOS=linux, the changed packages) and actionlint v1.7.12: 0 issues (logs/lint1.log).

CI. A new Unit step runs the five tests by name with CELERIS_REQUIRE_IOURING_WORKERS=1 and an exact tally: 5 top-level PASS, the 21 engine arms PASS (6 io_uring, 6 Adaptive), no SKIP line, every go test exits 0. The tally was run on the head log (passes) and the failing-first log (fails, exit 1) from the step's own script (logs/ci-tally-proof-ab.txt).

Cost

Interleaved base / head, 8 rounds, one container, under the laptop's exclusive timing lock (logs/bench1.log, summary logs/bench1.summary.txt, script scripts/bench-summary.py). B/op and allocs/op are exact; ns/op is from a laptop, the median of the per-round differences.

benchmark base ns Δ ns (range) B/op allocs/op
MemoryKVSetNXAcquire (new key each time) 42.1 +10.8 (−14.8..+23.0) 33 → 34 2 → 3
MemoryKVGetAndDelete (Set of a new key + GetAndDelete) 49.8 +14.2 (−12.0..+25.6) 34 → 35 3 → 4
MemoryStoreSetFresh (new key each time) 97.9 +16.3 (−1.1..+31.1) 80 → 80 2 → 3
MemoryKVSet (update of an existing key) 9.3 −0.2 (−5.9..+2.6) 0 0
MemoryKVGet 12.2 +0.2 (−3.2..+1.7) 1 1
MemoryKVSetNXContended 7.6 +0.2 (−5.5..+2.4) 0 0
MemoryStoreSetReplace 49.8 −0.0 (−4.0..+2.0) 0 0

The copy is one allocation of the key's length, paid once per new key (a new session, a new idempotency key, a cache miss stored). Reads, updates and contended SetNX are unchanged. The benchmarks' key is 1 byte; a 36-byte key copies 36 bytes in the same one allocation.

Overlap

git merge-tree of this branch with every open PR that touches a file it touches is clean: only .github/workflows/ci.yml is shared (with #907), in a different hunk (logs/overlap-1.txt). This PR's CI step sits after the #731 step; the other two lane MW PRs add theirs elsewhere, and all three merge with each other cleanly.

Review round 1

Approved, with one NIT. With RateFunc, each hit re-assigns the value-typed map entry to move lastUsed, so it clones the rate string on every hit (ratelimit.go:125 at this head), and the double-check re-assign needs the clone at :142 too. A map of *stoppableLimiter, updated in place, would drop both. That change goes beyond this PR's fix, so it is an item in #888, next to the lane's existing hit-path item there (comment). No code changes in round 1. The head stays c4f60cc, which merges cleanly with main at 609a015 and with #920's and #918's round-1 heads (fix-r1/logs/overlap-r1b.txt).

Review round 2

The correctness lens approved, and the performance/API/security lens approved with one MINOR and one NIT, both fixed in this body, with no code change:

The head stays c4f60cc. It merges with main at 56a6c1e and with the round-2 heads of #920 and #918 without a conflict (fix-r2/scripts/overlap.sh, fix-r2/logs/overlap-r2.txt). Since main moved under it (#906 changed engine/epoll, engine/iouring, internal/conn and protocol/h2, which the engine tests run through), this head's tests and suites ran again on the merged tree, main 56a6c1e plus the round-2 heads of #920 and #918 and this head (fix-r2/scripts/merged-snap.sh): 5 of 5 tests, 28 of 28 subtests and arms, no SKIP, no data race (fix-r2/logs/m-b2.log); suites store 25, cache 23, ratelimit 85, idempotency 9, session 156, csrf 87 top-level PASS, 0 FAIL, 0 SKIP (fix-r2/logs/m-suites-b2.log).

CI at c4f60cc stays green (19 pass, arm64 CodSpeed skips).

Evidence root: evidence/lanes-20261003/MW/ (scripts in scripts/, logs in logs/; round 2 in fix-r2/).

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested labels: breaking

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c4f60

The fix for retained request keys looks sound. One regression test waits on a short sleep for an entry to expire, which could occasionally cause a flaky failure, and is worth tidying.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c4f60

The changes strengthen stored-key identity without adding request authority or production entrypoints. Reviewed updates preserve locking, expiry, and cleanup behavior. Compatibility still depends on custom stores copying inputs they retain after a call.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported exposure is request-influenced identity within a configured in-memory store or middleware instance. Request paths, idempotency headers, and application-provided rate strings can influence retained keys. The reviewed changes alter memory ownership, not tenant authorization or credential authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The pre-existing failure path is request-buffer reuse changing a retained key, followed by a retry missing the original state and potentially executing a non-idempotent handler again. The reviewed copies and in-place updates address this path; the inspected replay regression test asserts that a retry from another connection does not add a handler execution.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inspected cache and idempotency server helpers reside in test files and bind ephemeral loopback listeners with cancellation-based shutdown. Their server-start calls do not introduce production network entrypoints.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Inspected regression tests mutate backing buffers across new, existing, and expired MemoryKV entries; check cache eviction retains its capacity bound; and assert cache hits, idempotent replay, and dynamic limiter reuse after subsequent requests. These are source-level assertions, not evidence of successful execution in this review.

46-48: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

The expired-key cases use a sleep for synchronisation.

Lines 47-48 and 66-67 set a 1ns TTL. They then sleep 1ms and assume that the entry has expired. The margin is wide, so this case rarely fails. The path instruction still forbids "sleep used as synchronisation". The test can instead poll Get(orig) until it returns ErrNotFound, with a generous deadline. It can also poll time.Now().UnixNano() until the clock passes the stored expiry. Note that Get deletes an expired entry, so polling Get would turn the "SetNX over an expired key" case into the new-key case. Polling the clock keeps the expired entry in the map and keeps the in-place path under test.

Proposed fix
