Part of #838. goceleris/probatorium#485 fixes the rest: probatorium's CONTRIBUTING.md:7. #838 needs both PRs: once both have merged, close it by hand.

Defect

mage Tools can end with an h2spec that is not 2.6.0, and it still exits 0 without saying which version it installed. Line numbers are at 2ca5d72, unchanged at c88d843, this PR's base.

  • The fallback installs an older h2spec. go install github.com/summerwind/h2spec/cmd/h2spec@latest (magefile.go:93 and :108) resolves to v2.2.1+incompatible. That build reports Version: 2.0.0 and has 146 test cases. The v2.6.0 release has 147.
  • The download path ignores the host architecture. It fetches h2spec_<goos>_amd64.tar.gz on every architecture (goarch := "amd64", magefile.go:89).
    • On an arm64 Mac without Rosetta, mage tools exits 0 and leaves an x86_64 binary that fails with Bad CPU type in executable (rc 126).
    • On linux/arm64 the binary does not run at all.
    • In both cases TestH2Spec then finds an h2spec that cannot run.
  • Any h2spec already on PATH is accepted ("already installed", magefile.go:83). That includes the 2.0.0 that an earlier fallback left behind.
  • The related developer hints the issue lists also float:
    • CONTRIBUTING.md:19 says mage@latest, while CI installs v1.17.2.
    • CONTRIBUTING.md:21 says golangci-lint "v2.9+", while CI runs v2.13.
    • .github/scripts/bench-ab.sh:41,50 uses benchstat@latest.

Mechanism

  • Why @latest lands on v2.2.1. h2spec's tags after v2.2.1 carry a go.mod without the /v2 suffix. The module proxy therefore has no version for them:
    • go install .../h2spec@v2.6.0 and @v2.6.0+incompatible are both refused with "module contains a go.mod file, so module path must match major version".
    • @latest gets v2.2.1+incompatible.
    • That module has no go.mod, so its dependencies float to whatever is newest (cobra v1.10.2 and x/net v0.59.0 today).
  • The v2.6.0 code is still reachable by commit. The v2.6.0 tag's commit, 70ac229, resolves through the proxy as the pseudo-version v1.5.1-0.20200804131034-70ac22940108, with its own go.mod pins.
  • Where the version string comes from. h2spec's Makefile stamps it with -ldflags "-X main.VERSION=2.6.0 -X main.COMMIT=<sha>". So the string says 2.6.0 for any code built with that stamp.

Fix

h2spec (magefile.go)

  • Tools builds that commit with the same ldflags: go install -ldflags=... github.com/summerwind/h2spec/cmd/h2spec@v1.5.1-0.20200804131034-70ac22940108.
    • This is one path for every GOOS/GOARCH.
    • The Go checksum database verifies it.
    • The curl | tar path, which had no checksum, is gone.
  • After the install, Tools checks three things:
    • the installed binary reports 2.6.0;
    • its build info records github.com/summerwind/h2spec@v1.5.1-0.20200804131034-70ac22940108 (round 1);
    • the h2spec that PATH resolves reports 2.6.0.
  • The version string is only the stamp Tools applies, so the build-info check is what proves the code. An edit back to @latest now fails the first mage tools after it, which names the module version it found. Before, it printed 2.6.0.
    • That refusal holds for one run only (round 2 review). The refused build stays in GOBIN, and the "already installed" check at the top of Tools reads only the version string. So a second mage tools on the same machine accepts the build. The fix changes how Tools behaves, so it is an item on v1.6.0 polish: CI and tests #890 rather than a change here.
  • If any check fails, Tools fails and names the binary and the release URL. That covers:
    • an older h2spec shadowing ours;
    • GOBIN missing from PATH, so TestH2Spec would skip;
    • a failed install;
    • a build of another commit.
  • It prints h2spec: 2.6.0 at <path> (built from github.com/summerwind/h2spec@v1.5.1-0.20200804131034-70ac22940108).
  • An h2spec already on PATH is kept only if it reports 2.6.0.
  • FullCompliance changes too. must(Tools()) (mage_compliance.go:74) now stops FullCompliance whenever Tools refuses. Before, on linux/arm64 it got an amd64 binary that cannot run, and the spec-test failure was "tolerated" (:76-78). That is the intended fix.

The other hints

  • CONTRIBUTING pins mage to v1.17.2, the version CI installs, and names golangci-lint v2.13.
  • bench-ab.sh runs the benchstat that .github/tools/go.mod pins, so there is nothing to install.
    • It runs it with GOWORK=off go tool -modfile=... (round 1).
    • go refuses -modfile in workspace mode, and .gitignore:27-28 lists go.work. Without GOWORK=off, round 0's script stopped with "cannot build benchstat" for a contributor who has one.
  • Dependabot does not bump benchstat. Round 0 said it does. That was wrong (fix-r1/scripts/dependabot-xperf.sh, log fix-r1/logs/dependabot-xperf.log):
    • golang.org/x/perf has no tagged release. Its proxy version list is empty, and @latest is a pseudo-version.
    • Dependabot's Go updater takes its candidates from go list -m -versions, which lists tags only, and keeps the current pseudo-version as the floor.
    • No Dependabot PR in the four repositories has ever moved a v0.0.0- pseudo-version.
    • The tools go.mod and dependabot.yml now say that the pin moves by hand, with GOWORK=off go -C .github/tools get golang.org/x/perf@latest. That command is a no-op today.
    • The allow entry for golang.org/x/perf stays, because dependabot.yml's own rule says a new tool directive needs its module listed. The v1.6.0 polish: CI and tests #890 item for a Lint check compares those two lists. The entry starts working if x/perf ever tags a release.
  • Adding x/perf moved no existing requirement: go mod tidy is a no-op, and govulncheck is still v1.8.0.
  • Hunks and open ci: check the exported API against golden files in api/, so every API change shows in review (celeris#443) #914. Round 1 kept main's header lines of .github/tools/go.mod and put the benchstat note below them. ci: check the exported API against golden files in api/, so every API change shows in review (celeris#443) #914 also edits that header.

Checked and left alone: README.md:60, loadgen's README.md:55 and docs' getting-started.md all use @latest to install celeris or loadgen itself, which is correct for users. loadgen has no @latest tool hint. Its CONTRIBUTING.md:12 says golangci-lint "v2.13+ (the CI pin)", the open-ended form this PR replaces in celeris's CONTRIBUTING. It matches loadgen's CI today (ci.yml:25, version: v2.13), so it is left as it is (round 2 review).

The test and the controls

CI does not run mage Tools. Magefiles also cannot be tested in the root package, because the root package is celeris and the magefiles are main. So the regression test is a black-box Go test in the lane evidence.

The test is fix-r1/tests/magetools/magetools_test.go, under the lane evidence dir lanes-20261003/CI1/. It runs the real mage tools (mage v1.17.2) of a tree with a private GOBIN, GOPATH and PATH, then checks what PATH ends up resolving. It has six scenarios:

  • S1: the release download fails (a stub curl that exits 22).
  • S2: a fresh install.
  • S3a: a stale 2.0.0 later on PATH.
  • S3b: a stale 2.0.0 earlier on PATH than GOBIN.
  • S4: 2.6.0 already installed.
  • S5 (round 1): go install delivers another commit with the 2.6.0 stamp.
    • A stand-in go, first on PATH, installs @latest whenever it is asked for h2spec.
    • mage tools must fail and name the module version it found.
    • The test also asserts that the stand-in really ran and left a 2.6.0-stamped v2.2.1 build in GOBIN. So a failure for any other reason, such as the network, cannot pass it.

Every installing scenario checks go version -m itself, so a 2.6.0 stamp on another commit cannot pass. Since round 1 it also checks that the printed line names the pinned module.

  • No test was skipped in any arm.
  • Every injection was grep-asserted, and every restore was cmp-checked.
  • C0 is the failing-first arm for round 1's defect. Round 0's magefile passes S3b and S4, and fails S5 because it accepts the stamped v2.2.1 build. Its other three failures are the new printed-line assertion.
  • D2 keeps the test honest. With Tools' own check switched off, the test's go version -m check still catches the wrong commit, so it has not gone vacuous behind the new check.

Other checks (fix-r1/scripts/celeris-910-checks-r1.sh, log fix-r1/logs/celeris-910-checks-r1.log, run in a private clone at fe509c8):

  • The root build and go vet . pass for GOOS=linux amd64 and arm64.
  • govulncheck v1.8.0 and benchstat build from the tools module.
  • go mod tidy there is a no-op, and so is the documented x/perf bump.
  • shellcheck and bash -n pass on bench-ab.sh.
  • No @latest tool install is left. The same grep finds the 5 sites on origin/main.
  • The only -modfile lines a contributor runs are bench-ab.sh's two, both with GOWORK=off.

Cost

  • No library code, no hot path, nothing CI runs.
  • mage tools now compiles h2spec instead of downloading a tarball. These are the TestTools* durations in the B logs. Each covers a whole mage tools run, including mage's own compile. Script fix-r1/scripts/cost-838-r1.sh, log fix-r1/logs/cost-838-r1.log:

    • The other five scenarios, with the module cache warm: 0.26 s to 0.95 s on darwin/arm64, 0.06 s to 0.43 s on linux/arm64, and 0.53 s to 2.25 s on linux/amd64.
  • The build-info check reads one file.
  • .github/tools gains two modules in go.sum (golang.org/x/perf and github.com/aclements/go-moremath). No other requirement moved.

Round 1

Every review finding was handled. The ones that changed code:

  • the build-info check;
  • GOWORK=off in bench-ab.sh, and the same fix in probatorium#485;
  • the Dependabot claim, corrected.

The rest:

Review (round 2)

Two reviews of fe509c8 found no blocker or major. The correctness review re-ran the test on darwin/arm64, linux/arm64 and linux/amd64 with its own mage and module cache, against main 874ebf4 (whose magefile.go is c88d843's). It got the same results on all three: base 0 pass / 6 FAIL, this branch 6 PASS / 0, and the cp negative control 0 / 6 FAIL. Its own second controls were caught: goBinDir ignoring GOBIN gave 0 / 2, and dropping the stamp gave 0 / 1. Logs: review-correctness-r1/r1x-logs/838-{host,linux-arm64,linux-amd64}-summary.log, under the lane evidence dir.

The head is still fe509c8. This round changes only this text.

finding what was done
MINOR: the build-info refusal does not stick. A second mage tools accepts the stamped build the first run refused, because the early return reads only --version. The review's TestReviewerRefusalIsSticky FAILs at fe509c8 on all three platforms (lane evidence review-correctness-r1/r1x-logs/838-*-P-probe-sticky-head.log). The fix changes how Tools behaves, so under the polish rule it is an item on #890, with that test as its failing test. The Fix section above now says the refusal holds for one run.
NIT: the same early return trusts the version string. The same #890 item.
NIT: "loadgen has no other tool hints". Corrected above. loadgen's golangci-lint hint is "v2.13+", which is CI's pin today.

The fork-claim audit for #864 in this round also found celeris's .coderabbit.yaml:184, which says fork code never runs on a self-hosted or macro runner. That is a second #890 item. Neither item is part of this PR.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change pins benchstat in the repository tools module and updates its benchmark script. Mage now installs and validates h2spec 2.6.0. CONTRIBUTING.md updates the documented versions of Mage, golangci-lint, and h2spec.

Changes

Pinned benchstat workflow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pin and invoke benchstat
.github/tools/go.mod, .github/dependabot.yml, .github/scripts/bench-ab.sh
The tools module declares benchstat and its dependencies. Dependabot allows updates to golang.org/x/perf, which has no tagged release. bench-ab.sh invokes the pinned tool through go tool with workspace mode disabled.

Pinned h2spec installation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Install and validate h2spec
magefile.go, CONTRIBUTING.md
Mage accepts an existing h2spec binary only if its version is 2.6.0. Otherwise, it installs the pinned module and checks the binary's version, build metadata, and PATH resolution. CONTRIBUTING.md documents h2spec 2.6.0, Mage v1.17.2, and golangci-lint v2.13.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to fe509

A previously installed h2spec binary can be accepted without confirming its pinned build. That limitation is documented and deferred; the tooling change is mergeable with owner awareness.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to fe509

The reviewed changes improve dependency pinning and installation checks. No material security regression was established. Tool execution still trusts the invoking developer’s environment, and h2spec validation does not provide transactional installation or authenticate every executable selected through PATH.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is the invoking account’s tool-execution authority, Go installation directory, and benchmark/compliance runs. Confirmed relationships do not establish propagation into deployed server requests, tenant data, or additional service privileges; external automation remains unassessed.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — benchstat selection now trusts the checked-out repository’s explicit tools module rather than an ambient global executable. GOWORK=off prevents workspace substitution for that invocation, and committed module checksums support normal Go dependency verification.
  • inferred — h2spec version probing executes the selected binary as the caller and is not authentication or sandboxing. Controlling that caller’s PATH executable remains a trusted-environment dependency, not a demonstrated new remote attack boundary; the base already accepted such executables for later compliance use.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Current-run installation validation fails closed, but rejection is not persistent: a rejected artifact that later appears first on PATH and reports 2.6.0 can pass the next invocation’s version-only check. Concurrent replacement and interruption safety are delegated to Go and the filesystem rather than enforced by Tools.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If authenticated, identity-bound compliance tooling becomes a requirement, validate or explicitly trust the actual selected executable on every invocation and stage installation before publishing it. This would strengthen the current developer-environment trust model rather than remediate an established PR-introduced vulnerability.

Codecov Report

📢 Thoughts on this report? Let us know!

…he version it ended with; pin the mage and benchstat hints (celeris#838)

mage Tools fell back to `go install .../h2spec@latest`, which resolves to
v2.2.1+incompatible (it reports Version: 2.0.0, one test case fewer), and
its download path fetched the amd64 tarball on every architecture, so an
arm64 Mac or Linux host got a binary that cannot run, with rc=0. It also
accepted any h2spec already on PATH.

Tools now builds the commit the v2.6.0 tag points at, as a pseudo-version
the module proxy serves, with the -ldflags of h2spec's own Makefile, on
every GOOS/GOARCH. It checks the version the result reports and the one
PATH resolves, fails with the release URL when either is not 2.6.0, and
prints the version and path it ended with.

CONTRIBUTING pins mage to v1.17.2 (what CI installs) and names CI's
golangci-lint v2.13; bench-ab.sh runs the benchstat that .github/tools
pins with `go tool`, and Dependabot bumps it there.
… pinned module version; bench-ab.sh runs benchstat with GOWORK=off (celeris#838)

The 2.6.0 version string is the -ldflags stamp Tools itself applies, so it
said 2.6.0 for any code. Tools now reads the installed binary's build info
and requires github.com/summerwind/h2spec@v1.5.1-0.20200804131034-70ac22940108,
and prints the module it was built from.

go refuses -modfile in workspace mode, so bench-ab.sh stopped for a
contributor with a go.work; both go tool calls now run with GOWORK=off.

golang.org/x/perf has no tagged release and Dependabot's version updates
propose tagged versions only: the tools go.mod and dependabot.yml now say
the benchstat pin moves by hand.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Early return trusts the version string only.

Line 108 accepts any PATH h2spec whose --version prints 2.6.0. The -ldflags stamp sets that string for any code. A wrong-commit build passes on the next mage tools run, as the PR notes. The comment on Lines 90-92 says build info is what proves the code, but this path skips that check.

Call h2specBuiltFrom(path) before the early return. Compare it to h2specMod + "@" + h2specModVersion. Binaries not built with go install of the pinned module, such as the release amd64 binary, may report a different Main.Version. If so, they fall through to the reinstall. If the PR defers this to #890, keep the deferral. Then update the comment on Lines 90-92 so it does not claim a check that this path skips.

+ "@" + h2specModVersion before returning. Let binaries that fail either check
fall through to the existing reinstall path.

After applying the fix, consider running `coderabbit review --agent` for local

…(celeris#838) (#485)

CONTRIBUTING.md now installs mage from the CI tools module (go run -modfile=.github/tools/go.mod), the same pinned version CI uses, instead of mage@latest. This is the probatorium part of goceleris/celeris#838; the celeris part is goceleris/celeris#910.
