Why

When a caller connects and no agent ever joins, the sessions API now reports the session as status=failed with end_reason=agent_join_timeout, and nothing is billed. The end reason table on the conversation history page still listed it under completed.

Changes

  • agents/monitor/conversation-history.mdx: completed now means the caller and an agent were both on the call, failed means no conversation took place, including the case where the caller connected and no agent joined. On such a failed session started_at, ended_at and duration_seconds describe how long the caller waited and nothing is billed. The table moves agent_join_timeout to failed and notes that internal_error is also failed when the runtime failed before the conversation started.
  • agents/monitor/webhooks.mdx: call.ended is still delivered for a caller who connected and waited for an agent that never joined, with session.status set to failed and ended_reason set to agent_join_timeout.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified that a session is completed only when both the caller and agent participate.
    • Documented that calls where the caller connects but the agent does not join are marked failed, include the caller’s wait time in session timing, and are not billed.
    • Clarified the failure status and end reason reported for these calls, and how internal errors are classified based on when they occur.

… failed session

The sessions API reports status failed with end_reason agent_join_timeout when
the caller connected but no agent joined, and nothing is billed for it. The
end reason table said completed. Also note that internal_error can land on a
failed session when the runtime failed before the conversation started, and
that call.ended is still delivered for these sessions.

Walkthrough

The documentation now defines how caller and agent participation affects session status. It classifies agent_join_timeout as failed and describes the associated call.ended event.

### Status and end reason

`status` says whether a conversation happened: `completed` means a participant connected and the call is over (it is billed even if the runtime ended it), `failed` means nobody ever connected, `active` means it is in progress, `pending` means the session was created and no one has connected yet, and `unknown` means the platform temporarily lost track of a live call.

On a `failed` session where the caller did connect, `started_at`, `ended_at` and `duration_seconds` describe how long they waited; nothing is billed.

Use second-person voice in the new status text.

The new prose uses third-person forms such as completed means, The caller connected, and The agent runtime hit. Rewrite the explanatory text with you to follow the MDX writing standard. Keep API field names and status values unchanged.

As per coding guidelines: MDX documentation must use second-person voice (you).

List both statuses for internal_error.

The prose allows internal_error to be completed or failed, but the table lists only completed. Readers may record the wrong status when the error occurs before the conversation starts.

`ended_reason` is the same value as `session.end_reason` and uses the [sessions API vocabulary](/agents/monitor/conversation-history#status-and-end-reason): `user_hangup`, `agent_hangup`, `escalated`, `conversation_timeout`, `heartbeat_timeout`, `agent_join_timeout`, `internal_error`, or `llm_endpoint_failure`. `call.ended` is only sent for sessions in which a participant connected, so the never-connected reasons (`room_join_timeout`, `cancelled`, `dial_failed`) do not appear here; query the sessions API with `status=failed` for those. In the rare case the reason is not settled yet at delivery time, both fields are `null`. New values may be added; treat unrecognized values as informational rather than rejecting the event.

Use second-person voice in the new webhook text.

The new sentence starts with A caller who connected and describes the event in third person. Rewrite it with you to follow the MDX writing standard. Keep session.status and ended_reason unchanged.
