What

Several named browser profiles, each with its own sign-ins, and attaching to a browser you already run (Brave, Chrome or Edge started with --remote-debugging-port), limited to this computer.

Engine

  • browser.profiles (name -> {kind: launch|attach, engine, endpoint, notes}). default always exists and stays a launch profile. A launch profile lives in ~/.sentient/browser/profiles/<name>; the old ~/.sentient/browser/profile moves to profiles/default on first use (if it can't be moved, it keeps being used).
  • One profile is open at a time. Switching closes the current one cleanly (same _life_lock / _lock semantics), except a window the user opened to sign in: then the call returns an error asking them to close it first.
  • Which profile a call uses: ctx.extra["browser_profile"] (set from the task's browser_profile when a run starts, replaced by a skill's browser_profile when skill_view reads it, and by a profile argument on browser_open / browser_tabs; latest wins for the rest of that turn or run), else default, switching if another profile is open. Profiles are signed in as different people, so a later chat never silently keeps using a task's profile.
  • attach profiles: connect_over_cdp to a loopback DevTools endpoint only (localhost, 127.0.0.0/8, ::1). Anything else is refused with a plain message, and so is a DevTools port whose webSocketDebuggerUrl points somewhere else. Sentient works in a tab of its own, follows only popups from that tab, and never closes the user's browser: close, idle, switching and deleting only disconnect. browser_switch_tab refuses a tab on a blocked site without touching it.
  • All existing safety is unchanged and covered in the attached browser too (approvals, purchase checks, sensitive field refusals, untrusted-content tagging and URL gating, allow/block lists, Stop everything).
  • REST: GET/POST /api/browser/profiles, PATCH/DELETE /api/browser/profiles/{name} (rename moves the folder and the tasks that use it; delete removes a launch profile's folder), POST /api/browser/open {url?, profile?}, status gains profile and attached.
  • Tasks: browser_profile column, on create and PATCH (400 for an unknown name), copied on rerun. Skills: optional browser_profile: frontmatter, kept on edit and on assistant patches, returned by skill_view and the Skill API.

Desktop

  • Settings > Browser: a Profiles card to add, edit (rename, notes, browser, address), delete, and "Open to sign in" / "Connect". The add dialog explains how to start Brave/Chrome/Edge with --remote-debugging-port and a separate --user-data-dir, and warns that any local program can then control that browser.
  • Task details: a "Browser profile" picker once there is more than one profile.
  • Browser panel: pick the profile to open for signing in; footer shows the profile and "Disconnect" while attached.

Docs: docs/API.md (sections 4, 8, 12), docs/PRIVACY.md, CHANGELOG.

How to test

.venv/Scripts/python.exe -m pytest -q tests/browser # offline + live (live skips without Edge/Chrome)
.venv/Scripts/python.exe -m pytest -q
.venv/Scripts/ruff.exe check sentient tests packaging
cd desktop && npm run typecheck && npm run build

New tests:

  • tests/browser/test_profiles.py (no browser): endpoint normalization and loopback refusal, a DevTools port pointing elsewhere is refused, attach to another computer refused before connecting, unknown profile error, profile names and folders, old folder migration, config keeps default, profile routes (create, duplicate, attach refused for non-loopback, rename moves the folder, default protected, delete removes the folder), tools stay visible with only an attach profile, task default profile reaches the tools in a real run, rename follows tasks, skill frontmatter profile (kept on edit and patch), no switch under a sign-in window.
  • tests/browser/test_profiles_live.py (real headless Edge/Chrome on local pages, skipped when none can start): two profiles keep separate cookies and localStorage, switching back and forth, a task default profile is used and an explicit argument wins, a chat after a task on another profile uses default, attach to a locally launched browser with --remote-debugging-port=0 on a throwaway folder (safety still applies), and detaching (and switching away) leaves it running with Sentient's tab still open.

Manual: Settings > Browser > Add profile > "A browser I started", start a browser on a throwaway folder with --remote-debugging-port=9333 --user-data-dir=<folder>, then Connect.

Notes

  • PR Issue 87 browser downloads #202 (browser downloads) also touches service.py; the launch code moved into _launch_persistent, so a small merge there is expected.
  • A skill that names a deleted profile, or a task whose profile was deleted, gets a plain error from the browser tools listing the profiles.
  • Renaming a profile updates the tasks that use it, but not skills that name it in their frontmatter (left for later); such a skill gets the same plain error until its frontmatter is edited.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds named launch and attach browser profiles. Profiles can be managed and selected for browser sessions, tasks, and skills. The desktop and API expose profile controls, and attached sessions connect to browsers through validated local DevTools endpoints.

Merge Risk

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f9d04

Minor desktop UI gaps remain: the task profile picker is missing in compact layouts, and a failed profile deletion may close its confirmation dialog. Neither blocks the core profile and attach behavior.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to f9d04

Tasks displayed as using Default can instead inherit another open, signed-in browser profile. Attachment also automatically handles dialogs from unrelated user tabs. These gaps cross account and tab-ownership boundaries despite authenticated access and local-only connections.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: Default task selection does not pin the default browser account. The UI sends null, task normalization also converts explicit default to null, and both execution paths omit the profile context key for that value. Browser routing consequently uses whichever profile is already open. A task represented as Default can therefore read or act through a work or attached profile's sign-ins. The base had only one managed profile; this cross-profile exposure is new. Explicit named selection works, but action approval and URL checks do not enforce the task's expected account identity.
  • Medium · security · observed: Attachment wires the shared dialog handler to every existing and newly opened context tab, not just the assistant's tab or its popups. Dialog messages from unselected user tabs enter subsequent tool responses, and those tabs' dialogs are automatically accepted or dismissed. A session-wide confirmation flag can also accept an unrelated tab's confirmation while an approved click is executing. The handler predates the PR, but attachment newly extends it to user-owned tabs; popup-following restrictions and blocked-tab selection checks do not constrain this event path.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Profile rename moves the launch folder and saves configuration before awaiting a separate task-reference update. The folder/configuration rollback does not cover failure or interruption during that callback, and task writes do not share the browser mutation lock. Tasks can be left referencing the removed name, while retrying the original rename cannot complete normally. Missing-name validation fails closed, so this is a durable identity-reference and recovery gap, not evidence of automatic redirection to another account.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Effective authority extends to the signed-in sites reachable through configured profiles and the attached browser context. Attachment enumerates all context tabs and permits explicit selection of unblocked tabs. The reviewed code does not establish a separate tenant or per-tab credential boundary; exposure depends on which local browser accounts are connected.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A previously opened work or attached profile can become the ambient account for a task displayed as Default. Its browser calls need no explicit profile override to inherit that account. This supports a wrong-account read/action concern, not a demonstrated remote authentication bypass.
  • observed — Page-controlled dialog messages from unrelated attached tabs reach the shared result queue without tab selection or domain validation. The handler also automatically responds to those dialogs. Untrusted-output tagging limits how returned text should be trusted, but does not prevent its collection or the automatic tab interaction.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Controls include gateway token authentication, loopback validation before CDP connection, sensitive-field typing refusals, live action-risk checks, untrusted browser output, and rejection of blocked HTTP(S) tabs before selection. These controls constrain callers, destinations and actions, but do not bind Default tasks to an account or constrain the shared dialog handler to owned tabs.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Lifecycle code separates attached connection closure from managed context closure and clears active-page, snapshot and focus state in a finally block. Automatic switching refuses an open user sign-in window. The live attachment test asserts that disconnect and switching leave the user's browser listening; it was inspected, not executed. Rename recovery remains separate from these lifecycle controls.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Resolve task Default to an explicit default profile in both execution paths. If inheriting the currently open account is desired, expose it as a distinct choice rather than representing it as Default.
  • proposed — Track attached-tab ownership and bind dialog collection and confirmation authority to the originating page and action. Leave unrelated user-tab dialogs untouched and clear queued dialog state when changing profiles.
  • proposed — Give profile rename an explicit cross-store recovery protocol, with durable reconciliation or stable profile identifiers, so interruption and concurrent task writes cannot strand identity references after configuration commits.

Refresh browser profiles after reconnect.

If a profile changes while the socket is disconnected, the reconnect handler refreshes browser status but not browser profiles. An open Settings or task view can keep showing the old profile list. Add browserKeys.profiles to this invalidation list.

Several browser profiles, each with its own sign-ins, under
~/.sentient/browser/profiles/<name> (the old profile folder moves to
"default"). A task can set a default profile, a skill can name one in
its frontmatter, and browser_open/browser_tabs take an optional profile.
One profile is open at a time; switching closes the current one.

An "attach" profile connects over CDP to a Brave, Chrome or Edge the
user started with --remote-debugging-port, on loopback only. Sentient
works in its own tab and only disconnects, never closing the browser.
All browser safety rules apply unchanged.

Settings > Browser manages profiles (add, edit, delete, open to sign
in), task details pick one, and the browser panel shows which is open.

Skip a rename when the profile name does not change.

If old == new, this method updates every matching task row and publishes task.updated for each task. Return before the query and write when the names match.

Based on learnings, rename operations should check for an unchanged value to avoid unnecessary writes and events.
