perf(macos): filter exact font identities before reading font files - #633
Opening a known font identity on macOS enumerates candidates and reads unrelated font files before rejecting their identities. Large font collections can make this work visible as evaluator/UI stalls.
Add an identity-specific candidate lookup to the backend interface. Before reading a font file, CoreText retains only candidates whose file path can produce the requested stable key, or whose native key matches it. The complete stable key still determines the result after resolving the collection face and variations. Caller PostScript names are diagnostic metadata: a different or absent name must not hide the same file identity. Other backends retain their existing enumeration behavior.
Regressions cover misses without reading unrelated files, exact matches despite different or absent PostScript metadata, full-key rejection after prefiltering, and resolver dispatch through the identity-specific method for both family and global discovery.
Validation on macOS with quick/O1 builds:
The new differing-PostScript-metadata regression fails against the original prefilter (0 matches instead of 1).
All 34 resolver/CoreText tests pass after the fix, including cached observation, catalog invalidation, identity-specific dispatch, unrelated-file exclusion, and native fallback with an opaque URL.
Formatting and diff checks pass. Tests were run on the local integration branch; the PR contains only the font lookup changes.
The font resolver now requests candidates by exact identity. The macOS backend prefilters candidates using file-path stable keys or CoreText native identity, then checks exact identity equality. Tests cover lookup behavior, file access, stable keys, and cached observations.
FontBackend adds a default method that filters candidates by exact resolved identity. FontResolver::observe_exact_font calls the identity-specific method. Resolver tests cover supported scopes and cached observations.
eval-exec/neomacs#622: Uses the exact-font identity contract to rasterize glyphs from pinned font bytes and select a PostScript face without family substitution.

The CoreText fixture calls CoreTextBackend::list_candidates_for_identity directly. Existing resolver tests use backends that inherit the default identity lookup, which delegates to list_candidates. Therefore, those tests would still pass if observe_exact_font regressed to call list_candidates. Add a test double that records or rejects ordinary enumeration, then call FontResolver::observe_exact_font and assert that only the identity-specific method runs.

An unresolved moderate finding shows the PostScript-name prefilter can drop the real candidate when CoreText and fontdb report differing names for faces sharing a stable_key, silently losing native metrics unless the invariant is confirmed or bounded.
This PR addresses a macOS responsiveness issue where opening an already-known font identity forces CoreText to enumerate candidates and read unrelated font files (to establish their durable identities) before rejecting them. On large font collections, that file I/O is visible as evaluator/UI stalls.
It adds an list_candidates_for_identity hook to the FontBackend trait. The CoreText backend overrides it to pre-filter candidates by the already-known PostScript name before touching font files, then still verifies the full identity. Other backends inherit a default implementation that preserves the existing enumerate-then-filter behavior.
Changes:
Added FontBackend::list_candidates_for_identity with a default (enumerate + identity filter) implementation.
Implemented a CoreText-specific override that prunes catalog entries by PostScript name before reading files (via a new shared candidates_with_postscript_name helper), refactoring the existing trait methods accordingly.
Switched the resolver's exact-identity observation path (observe_exact_font) to the new method and added CoreText fixture regression tests (miss / exact match / wrong durable key).
CoreText override that PostScript-name-prefilters before file reads; refactors shared logic into candidates_with_postscript_name and relocates existing trait methods.
New CoreText regression tests for missing name (no file reads), exact match, and mismatched durable key.
I filed one correctness concern (in macos/mod.rs): the PostScript-name prefilter introduces a matching precondition on a field (postscript_name) that ResolvedFontIdentity equality treats as non-authoritative (equality is stable_key-only). Because identities reaching this path can be built from fontdb metadata whose PostScript string is sourced independently of CoreText, a divergence for a shared stable_key could silently drop a previously-successful native observation. The refactor itself is otherwise behavior-preserving and well-tested.

Approving after re-review of ab0859e6ac.
The new prefilter is derived from stable-key semantics instead of the caller's diagnostic PostScript name: file identities keep only candidates whose path prefixes the requested stable key, and native identities compare the candidate's constructed coretext:{ps}#0@variations key. This fixes the regression I reproduced on the previous head. For a fontdb-derived identity on /System/Library/Fonts/Supplemental/Skia.ttf (ps=Skia-Regular, key .../Skia.ttf#0), CoreText exposes the same face as Skia-Regular_Extended, so the old name filter lost it after a normal catalog enumeration. With this commit, observe_exact_font returns the match again for both family="Skia" and family="".
Verified on the PR merged with current main (8d694eb1dd, clean merge):
36/36 changed-path tests pass: 3 CoreText tests (including the two new ones), 32 resolver tests (including exact_observation_dispatches_identity_lookup_for_both_scopes, which panics if ordinary enumeration is used), and font_metrics_match_the_selected_core_text_face.
Warm differential: 0/516 mismatches against the pre-PR list_candidates + stable-key filter, including fontdb-style simulated identities.
File-read cost: old path 94.8 ms / 206 files opened; exact hit 30.3 ms / 1 file; exact miss 28.2 ms / 0 files.
cargo fmt --check and git diff --check pass.
The five shaping tests that matched my filter failed only on pinned-fixture downloads (Noto Color Emoji timing out from raw.githubusercontent.com); they use the Fontconfig-kind fixture catalog, so they do not exercise this override.
One residual, non-blocking note: a cold-cache differential (both sides starting with an empty file_faces cache) still differs for 26/516 native-keyed identities of variable-font named instances. Those native identities are themselves artifacts of a prior warm enumeration, the new result is deterministic, and it never returns a wrong candidate. The reachable effect is limited to font_has_char_in_identity for a stored native identity after advance_catalog_generation clears file_faces. Root cause is the pre-existing single-face name-map behavior in file_face_index_for_postscript_name; worth a follow-up issue, not part of this change.
