Problem

getTrustedCertificatesForVerification() only calls getX509CertsByUrl() for non-attestation client auth. If the configured TRUST_LIST_URL is unreachable or misconfigured (common in local/dev/e2e), the entire flow fails even if the caller has already explicitly trusted a certificate via POST /x509/trusted.

This blocked mdoc issuance/verification flows that create and trust certificates dynamically in tests.

Solution

  • Import X509ModuleConfig.
  • In the NoAuth branch, try getX509CertsByUrl() first (preserve existing behaviour).
  • On error, resolve X509ModuleConfig from the agentContext and return trustedCertificates if non-empty. These are the certificates added via X509ModuleConfig / addTrustedCertificate() (e.g. POST /x509/trusted).
  • If there are no fallback certificates, re-throw the original error so remote trust list failures still surface in environments that expect them.

Attestation-based auth (clientAuthentication === 'client_attestation') is unchanged.

Verification

  • npx tsc --noEmit -p tsconfig.build.json passes.
  • Enables the mdoc e2e flow to trust on-the-fly issuer certificates without a live trust list.
  • Diff scoped to src/cliAgent.ts only.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved certificate verification for connections that do not require client authentication.
    • If the standard trust-list cannot be reached, verification now falls back to configured trusted certificates when available.
    • When neither source is available, the original trust-list error is preserved and reported.

…okup fails

When client authentication is not attestation-based, getTrustedCertificatesForVerification
currently only fetches certificates from the static TRUST_LIST_URL. In local/dev and
e2e environments that URL is often unreachable or misconfigured, which causes
verification/issuance flows to fail even if certificates were explicitly trusted.

Add a try/catch around getX509CertsByUrl(): on failure, resolve X509ModuleConfig from
the agent context and return any certificates already added via POST /x509/trusted
(addTrustedCertificate). If none exist, rethrow the original error so remote trust
list failures are still surfaced in non-test environments.

📝 Walkthrough

For NoAuth, certificate lookup falls back to configured agent trusted certificates when the static trust-list request fails. If no configured certificates are present, the code rethrows the fetch error. ClientAuth behavior is unchanged.

When the trust list cannot be fetched, certificate verification now falls back to issuer certificates the operator added locally, as intended. If the trust-list service hangs rather than failing, however, verification can still stall for minutes before that fallback runs. Adding a short request timeout is a small follow-up, and the change is otherwise reasonable to merge.

I agree, this auto configuration is required for automated testcases & even dev testing. One suggestion, can we make it configurable in such a way that it only works for dev/ testing not for agent configured for production env.
