Devframe migration 1a: run a Devframe hub beside oRPC - #691
First PR of the Devframe migration (design: docs/designs/devframe-migration.md on branch docs/devframe-migration). Stacked: PR 1b (widget login and the /t/<token> gate) and PR 2 (sessions group) build on this branch.
What this does
A Devframe hub runs beside oRPC inside the engine. Nothing changes for users yet.
Engine:makeApp owns the hub (packages/core/src/devframe-plane.ts), mounted at /__conciv/, with Devframe's MCP route off (mcp: false) so /api/mcp stays the only agent surface. Messages and Terminals plugins plus @devframes/service-open load by default. Login trust uses Devframe's public createInteractiveAuth with the engine's login token.
Serve:serveHono takes a claimUpgrade so the hub's WebSocket shares the engine port; claimed sockets close on shutdown.
Extension API:defineConcivFunction (zod input, coded errors that survive the wire, session: true runs inside the session scope), defineConcivPlugin (.server() / .client(), split by the extension compiler), connection helpers (nodeClient, browserClient, readSharedState, reconnect with backoff). Exported from @conciv/extension/devframe-* subpaths so the widget bundle does not pull Devframe in.
Dev servers: the hub is forwarded on the page origin for Vite, Next.js (webpack and Turbopack), webpack-dev-server and Rspack, loopback only (socket check on Vite, webpack and Rspack; Host header check on Next). The Vite plugin gains an internal surface (page or dock) that nothing flips yet.
Client:hubQueryUtils keeps oRPC query keys and swaps the call to conciv:<group>:<proc>; reachability can follow a hub connection.
Testkits:Kit.hub, serveDevframePlugin, devframe-faults (wraps hub functions to fail or count calls) and devframe-probe.
Tests:core-chat.it folded into core-api.it (all 11 cases); new core-hub.it (login refused then accepted, coded errors, shared state across tabs, streams, reconnect, no __mcp route, no WebMCP tool).
Dependencies
devframe, @devframes/hub, @devframes/agentic, @devframes/plugin-messages, @devframes/plugin-terminals, @devframes/service-open at 1.3.0 (with a minimumReleaseAgeExclude), and dev-only webpack, webpack-cli, webpack-dev-server, @rspack/core, @rspack/cli, @rspack/dev-server for the plugin tests.
Known trade-off
Devframe validates function input before our handler runs, so the client maps Devframe 1.3.0's invalid-argument message to BAD_REQUEST. A test pins that wording.
Verification
Each touched test file run alone: plugin.it 103/103, cli 284/284, core-api.it 113 passed 1 skipped, core-hub.it 15/15, conciv.browser 52/52, harness-testkit 60/60, extension-testkit 38/38, client 25/25, serve teardown 10/10. Typecheck of touched packages, oxlint, oxfmt, fallow and changeset coverage pass. Widget bundle +0.3 kB gzip.
The engine now owns one hub under /__conciv/, created by makeApp with its MCP route off, and serveHono hands hub upgrades to it through claimUpgrade while Hono keeps every other upgrade. The conciv layer lands in @conciv/extension: defineConcivFunction, defineConcivPlugin, the conciv:host service and connection helpers with reconnect. The testkits gain Kit.hub, serveDevframePlugin and the browser probe, and core-chat.it moved into core-api.it so its slot becomes the hub test file. Nothing in the widget talks to the hub yet.

…ompiler plugins
Vite mounts the hub with a real socket check on requests and upgrades, Next rewrites /__conciv/ to the engine for loopback hosts only and keeps the trailing slash redirect for everything else, and webpack-dev-server and Rspack get one proxy entry guarded with a BlockList. defineConcivPlugin now splits like defineExtension, and plugins flow through discovery beside legacy extensions. Widget paths take ClientExtension so both shapes reach the tab bar.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…e hub connection
The testkit can now fail, hold, gate and count named hub functions by wrapping them in the running hub, so these helpers work the same for Node clients and browser tabs. makeAppData takes a hub call and overlays any group listed in DEVFRAME_GROUPS, which stays empty here, and the offline logic can follow a hub connection when one is passed. The devframe entry points moved to their own subpaths so the widget bundle carries none of it.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The promise form imported for the hold test replaced the callback form another test in that file relies on, and that test hung.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The probe function now carries agent metadata, so the hub would mount its MCP route if mcp: false were dropped. A batch revert of the guards showed each check failing on its own.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The hook now keeps a mutable surface, page or dock, beside the docked
capability. load, transformIndexHtml and the widget middleware read it,
and makeWidgetInject takes a getter so a later change reaches the next
page load. It defaults to dock when Vite DevTools is present, otherwise
page, so nothing changes for users; nothing flips it yet.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The router accepted a hub call and a hub connection that nothing set,
and makeAppData took a hub only the router could pass. The browser hub
client arrives with the widget login, so the widget side waits for it;
the client package keeps hubQueryUtils and the connection-fed
reachability, which its own tests cover.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The hub rewrite needs Next's own slash redirects off, and the plugin
re-added only the strip-slash form, so an app with trailingSlash: true
lost its add-slash redirect and got the opposite one. The plugin now
re-adds whichever form the app's mode calls for, with the basePath root
case and locale-free sources Next uses, all excluding the hub path, and
adds none when the user already turned them off.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Devframe checks a function's args schema before the conciv handler runs
and sends back a bare error with only its message, so a caller saw no
code at all. The conciv client options now turn that invalid-argument
error into a ConcivError with code BAD_REQUEST, so procedure groups that
move onto the hub keep the error code their callers expect.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
After close(), ready(), calls and streams waited forever for a link that
would never come. Closing is now a connection status, and anything
waiting or arriving after it rejects with DISCONNECTED. A stream whose
link drops now returns its source iterator, and readSharedState removes
its update listener when a new client replaces the old one or when the
caller releases it.
The two-tab shared state test logged both tabs in at once with the
single one-time code, which raced; it now logs them in one after the
other.

A forged loopback Host header can let LAN clients bypass the hub’s local-only boundary when Next listens on a network interface, alongside unresolved routing and connection defects.
Introduces the first stage of the Devframe migration: a hub alongside the existing oRPC engine, with extension APIs and test infrastructure for later migrations.
Changes:
Mounts the authenticated hub at /__conciv/, shares the engine’s WebSocket port, and adds dev-server forwarding.
Adds plugin, function, connection, and query helpers while adapting widget types to accept plugin client components.
Expands integration coverage for authentication, reconnects, streams, forwarding, and shutdown; consolidates existing chat tests.

Fixed in 1903288: withConciv now refuses devframes.add with an error pointing at instrumentation, and register accepts the devframe definitions there, so nothing travels through JSON or a process global.

The Next.js loopback check trusts the Host header, unlike the other adapters.
Vite, webpack-dev-server, and Rspack check socket.remoteAddress. The Next.js rewrite can only match the Host header. If Next listens on a LAN interface, a LAN client can send Host: localhost:<port> and reach /__conciv/*.
The new Next.js test uses an honest LAN host (192.168.1.20). The Vite and dev-server tests use a forged loopback host from a real LAN socket. The Next.js suite therefore does not cover the spoofed case.
Confirm that the hub requires login for every sensitive function. Document this limit for Next.js. Consider a hub-side socket-address check, since Host filtering mainly protects against DNS rebinding.

… restart test
The restart test started the shared-state reader inside the page and returned at once, so a slow runner could restart the server before the first read arrived. That read was then lost with the old connection and only the read after the reconnect landed, leaving the test waiting for a second read until it timed out. The page now resolves only after the first read, so the restart always lands between two reads.

…lts and Next config
A link that drops while it is still opening is no longer installed; the attempt is closed and retried. A failed connection attempt now reports disconnected, so an engine that is down from the start shows as offline. Session functions take object inputs only and accept an explicit session id on strict schemas. Fault helpers resolve every named function before wrapping any. Plugin client halves no longer accept tools, which never reached the engine; plugin tools are agent functions on the server half. withConciv keeps the hub rewrite out of the basePath, adds no hub forwarding to production builds, boots the engine on the same port the rewrite forwards to, and hands devframes.add definitions to the engine in process, since the JSON environment cannot carry their setup functions.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A client-supplied token was looked up with `in` against the trusted-token
record, so a token such as constructor or __proto__ counted as a logged-in
browser. Devframe's own handshake looks tokens up the same way and marks such
a connection trusted. The browser-caller check now uses Object.hasOwn, and the
hub's authorize step refuses any session whose token is only inherited from
the object prototype, so those connections can call nothing but the anonymous
handshake.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
next.config reaches the engine as JSON, so devframe setup functions cannot
travel through withConciv. withConciv now throws a clear error when
devframes.add has entries and points at instrumentation, and register and
registerWith accept the devframe definitions there, where the functions
survive. The process-global handoff is gone.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A handler could return more than its output schema declared, and the extra
fields went to the caller, since the hub does not check results. Every
conciv function now parses its result with the output schema before it
leaves the engine, which strips undeclared fields and applies defaults, the
same as an oRPC procedure.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The Next.js hub tests ran the example app, whose next.config imports a
package outside the plugin's build graph, so on a fresh runner Next could
not load its config and the hub requests failed. They now run a small
plain-JavaScript app under the plugin's test fixtures that imports the
plugin itself, installed into the app's node_modules from the plugin's own
build, with next and react linked from the plugin's install. The tests no
longer touch the example app's build output. The app registers a devframe at
register time in instrumentation, and the login test calls it through the
page origin, covering devframes passed to register.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A listener that subscribed again while the connection was notifying, such as
a reactive wrapper recreated during render, was visited by the same pass, so
it ran twice or kept re-subscribing without end. Status and client listeners
are now notified from a copy of the set taken before the pass, so a listener
added during it waits for the next change.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A hub-backed query whose input is skipToken keeps the oRPC query function, so
an explicit refetch refuses instead of calling the hub with the token. A
plugin whose config or server half throws during setup is logged and skipped,
the same as an extension that fails to mount, so one broken plugin no longer
stops the hub from starting. serveDevframePlugin removes its state directory
and closes a partly started hub, and the connection-drop tests attach their
rejection checks before the hub closes.

Call hub.close() even when stopHubSessions throws.
close awaits stopHubSessions(hub) first. That function awaits hub.context. If hub initialisation fails, hub.context can reject. In that case close rejects and never reaches hub.close().
makeApp hits this path when hub.ready rejects. It calls dispose(), which calls devframePlane.close(). dispose() logs the error and continues. The hub then keeps whatever it opened during the failed start.
Run hub.close() in a finally block so it always executes.

to the plugin, so it no longer streams them from a CDN. The hub test checks the panel is served
without writing the CDN cache. service-open drops its roots option: the hub's workspaceRoot is
already the project folder, which is the service's default.

Review comment at @packages/core/test/core-hub.it.test.ts at line 315:
Move the enclosing describe block for the terminals panel test into an existing
core test file, and remove the newly added test file; preserve the test’s setup,
assertions, and behavior.

First PR of the Devframe migration (design:
docs/designs/devframe-migration.mdon branchdocs/devframe-migration). Stacked: PR 1b (widget login and the/t/<token>gate) and PR 2 (sessions group) build on this branch. What this does
A Devframe hub runs beside oRPC inside the engine. Nothing changes for users yet.
makeAppowns the hub (packages/core/src/devframe-plane.ts), mounted at/__conciv/, with Devframe's MCP route off (mcp: false) so/api/mcpstays the only agent surface. Messages and Terminals plugins plus@devframes/service-openload by default. Login trust uses Devframe's publiccreateInteractiveAuthwith the engine's login token.serveHonotakes aclaimUpgradeso the hub's WebSocket shares the engine port; claimed sockets close on shutdown.defineConcivFunction(zod input, coded errors that survive the wire, session: trueruns inside the session scope),defineConcivPlugin(.server()/.client(), split by the extension compiler), connection helpers (nodeClient, browserClient, readSharedState, reconnect with backoff). Exported from@conciv/extension/devframe-*subpaths so the widget bundle does not pull Devframe in.surface(pageordock) that nothing flips yet.hubQueryUtilskeeps oRPC query keys and swaps the call toconciv:<group>:<proc>; reachability can follow a hub connection.Kit.hub,serveDevframePlugin,devframe-faults(wraps hub functions to fail or count calls) anddevframe-probe.core-chat.itfolded intocore-api.it(all 11 cases); newcore-hub.it(login refused then accepted, coded errors, shared state across tabs, streams, reconnect, no__mcproute, no WebMCP tool).Dependencies
devframe,@devframes/hub,@devframes/agentic,@devframes/plugin-messages,@devframes/plugin-terminals,@devframes/service-openat 1.3.0 (with aminimumReleaseAgeExclude), and dev-only webpack, webpack-cli, webpack-dev-server, @rspack/core, @rspack/cli, @rspack/dev-server for the plugin tests.Known trade-off
Devframe validates function input before our handler runs, so the client maps Devframe 1.3.0's invalid-argument message to
BAD_REQUEST. A test pins that wording.Verification
Each touched test file run alone: plugin.it 103/103, cli 284/284, core-api.it 113 passed 1 skipped, core-hub.it 15/15, conciv.browser 52/52, harness-testkit 60/60, extension-testkit 38/38, client 25/25, serve teardown 10/10. Typecheck of touched packages, oxlint, oxfmt, fallow and changeset coverage pass. Widget bundle +0.3 kB gzip.
