feat(ui-kit-system): warm tooltip group and squish switch - #651
A toolbar of icon buttons showed one tooltip after another with no relation between them, and the kit switch slid its thumb with a plain transition. This ports two React Bits pieces into the kit so every toolbar and switch in conciv gets them: WarmTooltip (reactbits.dev/micro/warm-tooltip) and SquishSwitch.
What changed
Tooltip.Group (packages/ui-kit-system/src/tooltip-group.tsx): members keep their Ark state machine but render no content of their own; the group owns one role="tooltip" label that pops in on the first trigger (160ms, scale .94, 4px rise, blur), then glides and resizes to the next trigger over 320ms while the text crossfades in the travel direction. A hover within 300ms of a close opens with no delay. Optional lean (box tilts with live velocity through a single rAF loop) and fuse (a 2px line fills over the open delay). Keyboard focus opens instantly; blur, Escape, mouse down, outside pointer down and a hidden document close. Touch opens after a 500ms hold. Reduced motion drops pop, glide, swap and lean.
Ungrouped Tooltip.Content gets the same pop (Web Animations API, no new dependency, no persisting fill).
TooltipIconButton and TooltipIconButtonSlot accept shortcut, rendered as a keycap.
Adoption: chat action bar, composer and composer actions, terminal actions, whiteboard thread header.
Switch: the thumb travels on a spring (170/21.5/0.9), squishes along the travel axis from its velocity through a second spring, swells 1.035 on hover, and can be dragged with pointer capture, committing through Ark past the midpoint; a tap toggles, cancel restores. The squish threshold scales with the thumb's travel so it reads at the kit's 32×18 size. Reduced motion jumps. Spring and frame-loop helpers live in src/motion.ts.
Storybook: one theme axis combining scheme and skin (the two withThemeByClassName decorators shared one global and crashed on any toolbar pick).
Tests
Storybook play functions only, behaviour only: the Toolbar story asserts one role="tooltip" element, reuse of it across a hover glide, aria-describedby on the hovered button, a no-delay reopen inside the warm window, and the label text after three quick hovers. The Switch story asserts click toggles, a drag past the midpoint toggles, a drag released before it does not.
Verification
@conciv/ui-kit-system: typecheck, lint, build clean; 239 tests. Storybook plays 439/439. fallow audit 0 findings. Adopting packages typecheck and lint clean.
Driven headless with motion on: pop, glide, swap and exit timing match the reference; switch squish peaks at scaleX 1.12 on a click.
Deviations from the reference
The group label renders inline with fixed positioning rather than portaled, so skin CSS variables resolve.
Ungrouped exit is instant: Ark waits only on CSS animations before hiding content.
Touch long press opens the group label directly, so aria-describedby is absent on touch.
Nested groups are out of scope; the composer row and its actions act as two groups.
New dependency in ui-kit-system: @solid-primitives/resize-observer (already used by ui-kit-chat), to re-measure the label when its text changes while open.
- Tooltip.Group shares one label across a toolbar: pops in cold, glides and
resizes between triggers, crossfades the text, leans with travel
- members keep Ark's machine; warm window opens neighbours with no delay
- ungrouped Tooltip.Content pops in with WAAPI instead of anim-combo
- TooltipIconButton and Slot take a shortcut rendered as a keycap
- Toolbar story with play checks

- action bar, composer actions, composer row, terminal actions and the
whiteboard thread header wrap their buttons in Tooltip.Group

…rom live velocity
- group label: 12.5px medium text, 10x6 padding, 8px radius, reference shadow, no border, 2px-radius arrow
- keycap sits 7px from the label as in the reference
- lean follows the label's measured velocity each frame through the reference spring, so a re-hover mid-glide keeps the tilt
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- addon-themes keeps one theme global, so two class-name decorators read each other's
selection and crashed on any pick; one decorator now carries scheme and skin together
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- thumb springs between ends, squishes along travel from its velocity and swells on hover
- drag on the control follows the pointer, commits through Ark at the midpoint, cancel restores
- the click after a drag is swallowed once; a tap still toggles through the label
- hidden input carries role switch
- spring, settle and frame loop helpers move to motion.ts, shared with the tooltip lean
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- stretch threshold is the reference speed scaled by measured thumb travel over the reference's 42px,
so the kit-size thumb squishes as much as the reference

Walkthrough
The UI kit adds grouped tooltips, tooltip shortcuts, and animated switch interactions. Chat, terminal, and whiteboard controls use grouped tooltips. Storybook now provides six theme options in one decorator.
Adds reduced-motion detection, spring calculations, value clamping, and an animation-frame loop.
Switch motion and dragging packages/ui-kit-system/src/switch.tsx, packages/ui-kit-system/src/switch.stories.tsx, .changeset/ui-kit-warm-tooltip.md
The switch animates thumb position, stretch, and hover scale. Dragging updates checked state, while cancellation restores the state recorded at press. The story test covers click and drag interactions.
Tooltip animation and geometry packages/ui-kit-system/src/tooltip-motion.ts
Adds placement parsing, pop and swap animations, viewport-clamped label geometry, and lean calculations.
Grouped tooltip state and rendering packages/ui-kit-system/src/tooltip-group.tsx, packages/ui-kit-system/package.json
Adds group state, label measurement and positioning, transitions, and close handling for Escape, focus changes, outside presses, and document hiding.
Tooltip API and shortcuts packages/ui-kit-system/src/tooltip.tsx, packages/ui-kit-system/src/tooltip-icon-button.tsx, packages/ui-kit-system/src/index.tsx, packages/ui-kit-system/src/tooltip.stories.tsx
Adds grouped and plain tooltip behavior, exports group support, and adds optional shortcut keycaps to tooltip icon buttons. The Toolbar story checks tooltip interactions.

Two small reduced-motion defects remain: dragging a switch can leave the thumb visibly offset, and the optional tooltip fuse animation still plays. Neither blocks normal use; fix them as follow-ups or before merge.

Explanation
The title "feat(ui-kit-system): warm tooltip group and squish switch" names the two main changes. The changeset adds a shared warm tooltip group (Tooltip.Group, TooltipGroup) and a spring-driven switch with squish motion. The title is specific and concise, and it follows a conventional commit format. It omits the tooltip shortcut keycap and the adoption in chat, terminal, and whiteboard, but those are secondary to the main change.

Unresolved regressions affect switch dragging and consumer callbacks, while tooltips lose caller refs and mishandle positioning, scrolling, or registration near viewport edges, in ShadowRoots and popup windows, and within transformed ancestors.

Fixed in 0de3c72: every instanceof in the tooltip files is replaced by nodeType-based checks (src/realm.ts), and focus checks, listeners, computed styles and viewport bounds come from the trigger's own window.

🟡 Changes recommended
Unresolved regressions can prevent switch dragging from toggling, render tooltips off-screen, expose stale labels to assistive technology, and overwrite consumer event handlers or refs.
- pointer, hover and click handlers passed to Switch.Control run first, then the drag and swell
- a caller that prevents the press skips the drag for that gesture
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…tted state
- Ark applies setChecked in a microtask, so the drag passes the new state instead of reading the stale data-state
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- the label takes the opposite side when its preferred side has no room, then stays inside the viewport margin on both axes
- arrow, origin and data-placement follow the side it lands on
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- a fixed probe beside the label reads the containing block origin, so a transformed ancestor such as the
whiteboard thread popover no longer offsets the label or the fuse
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- scroll events in a shadow tree are not composed, so the label also listens on the trigger's shadow root
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- node checks use nodeType instead of opener-realm instanceof, so popup-window triggers register
- focus, listeners, computed styles and viewport bounds come from the trigger's own window
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- a text layer is aria-hidden from the moment it starts its exit, so a glide describes the button by the new label only
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- the pop also runs when the content element mounts while open, so lazyMount and unmountOnExit tooltips animate
- persistent content keeps popping from the open notification; the pop cancels a running one so it never doubles

🔵 Needs a closer look
Unresolved issues allow disabled tooltips to open, prevent touch-trigger dismissal, skip tooltip animations, expose stale accessible labels, and let read-only switches change through dragging.
A read-only switch can still be dragged: press checks only disabled, and move changes the value through the programmatic setChecked API, bypassing Ark's read-only interaction handling. Include readOnly in the press guard so dragging cannot change a switch rendered with readOnly.
Dismiss tooltip on pointerdown of the same trigger
After a touch hold, fireHold() opens the group directly while the member's Ark machine remains closed. A subsequent press on that same trigger is excluded here, and its pointerdown handler does not close the group either, so the tooltip remains visible when the icon is pressed. Handle same-trigger pointerdown as a dismissal too, rather than relying on an Ark open-state transition.
Prevent touch-hold tooltips from opening when the group is disabled
packages/ui-kit-system/src/tooltip.tsx:129
An enabled trigger inside a grouped <Tooltip.Root disabled> still opens its tooltip after a touch hold because the hold handler bypasses Ark's disabled check. Guard both hold start and completion with the tooltip's disabled state, and cancel any pending hold when it becomes disabled.

🔵 Needs a closer look
Human assessment is needed to evaluate interacting gesture and tooltip lifecycle edge cases affecting read-only and disabled behavior, context-menu suppression, and animation and content cleanup.
