test(ui-kit-chat): deep jump test acts like a reader, drop the geometry coverage case - #647
CI run 41129152287 failed virtual-scroll-coverage.browser.test.tsx > a deep jump re-windows onto the target turn within the overscan on a not.toHaveAttribute('data-at-bottom') timeout. About ninety local runs, including CPU throttling up to 30x, never reproduced it, so this PR fixes the defects that are provable in the test itself and leaves the product alone.
What the test got wrong
settledThread() was not a settle point: it returned before the virtualizer had measured the mounted turns, so the first scroll could race the initial window.
The assertion read data-at-bottom, an attribute that mirrors the follow machine's internal state, instead of what a reader sees. A flipped flag under load fails the test while the thread is visibly correct.
The deep jump wrote scrollTop = 0 programmatically. The follow machine owns scrollTop and reverts foreign writes, so the test fought the component it was testing.
What changed
File renamed to packages/ui-kit-chat/test/virtual-scroll.browser.test.tsx; two tests remain.
The deep jump is one userEvent.wheel on the log with a huge negative delta, then a visible-turn assertion: question 0 visible, last turn gone. No attribute reads, no scroll writes.
The ResizeObserver loop test sweeps a fixed wheel count derived from the turn count and an estimated turn height, then asserts the first turn is visible. The hand-rolled poll loop is gone.
The geometry coverage test (overscan measured through getBoundingClientRect and scrollHeight) and its helpers are deleted per the repo rule against geometry and CSS assertions in tests.
Verification
File run 3/3 and a repeat 5/5 locally; @conciv/ui-kit-chat package suite 451/451.
tsc, oxlint, oxfmt clean; fallow audit reports only the rename as a non-blocking note.
No changeset: test-only change in a published package, no src/ or config edit.
Not done
Two product-side mechanisms stay unproven and untouched: a stale virtualizer offset overwriting a wheel during a size adjustment, and wheel/scroll event reordering under load. Either needs a CI failure screenshot before the follow machine is changed.
Updated browser coverage for long conversations with mixed message content, including scrolling through the thread and jumping to its beginning.
Added checks for viewport behavior and browser resize-observer errors during virtualized chat scrolling. These changes update automated verification; they do not change visible app behavior.
… turns
The deep-jump and ResizeObserver-loop cases escaped follow mode with a 200px
wheel gated on the data-at-bottom attribute, then jumped with a programmatic
scrollTop write. Both now wheel the log to the first turn and wait for
question 0 to be visible, so no assertion keys on a scroll-position proxy.

Remove the geometry coverage test and its measurement helpers. sweepUpwards
now wheels the log in steps until question 0 is visible. The file no longer
measures coverage, so it is renamed to virtual-scroll.browser.test.tsx.

sweepUpwards wheels enough steps to pass the top of the thread for any step
size, then asserts question 0 is visible once.

Walkthrough
The pull request replaces a virtual-scroll browser test file. The new tests seed varied chat turns, check for ResizeObserver loop errors during scrolling, and verify that the last answer is absent after jumping to the first turn.
The new tests seed 80 alternating user and assistant turns with varied text and tool-call content. They check for ResizeObserver loop errors during scrolling and verify that the last answer is absent after jumping to the first turn. The deleted tests also checked viewport coverage during upward scrolling.
The browser test may pass without proving that scrolling reached the intended endpoint; tighten the assertions before merging.

Assert that the turn intersects the viewport.
toBeVisible() also passes for an offscreen turn mounted in overscan. The test can pass with question 0 outside the scroll viewport and the last turn already evicted. Use toBeInViewport() here and for the endpoint checks in sweepUpwards() and lastTurnVisible(). (raw.githubusercontent.com)
