External devnet tools currently need separate setup or changes to core commands. This adds an experimental local plugin path: explicitly link a prepared package, then invoke its command through offckb with a versioned devnet context and foreground process cleanup.

Changes

  • Add plugin link/list/unlink, static package declarations, Node compatibility checks, and core-command priority with collision diagnostics.
  • Keep plugin arguments opaque, define --json ownership, export temporary context/script files, and propagate child exit status while cleaning up owned processes. Local list-hashes failures yield unknown chain identity and a sanitized diagnostic so chain-independent tools can continue.
  • Include a context probe and a repository-only adapter for Devnet Explorer, pinned to upstream commit 477af4400a716353d140fc1a5b8fee8175f74fed.
  • Document the protocol, usage, design tradeoffs and limits; include a minor changeset.

Validation

  • pnpm test --runInBand tests/plugins.test.ts tests/plugin-run.test.ts tests/cli-errors.test.ts: all 29 tests passed, including metadata failure fallback and repeated CLI registration. The initial full-suite run passed 59 suites / 579 tests with 7 skipped; the final changes were checked with the focused run.
  • pnpm typecheck, pnpm build, pnpm lint, formatting checks and git diff --check passed. Lint retains the existing src/node/install.ts warning.
  • Ran the opt-in smoke test against the production ncc bundle, official CKB 0.208.0 and the prepared real Explorer runtime on macOS: exact argv, single JSON result, offline help, continued probe execution after a real list-hashes failure, Explorer page/API, chain reset/restart, unknown-fork rejection, unlink protection and signal cleanup all passed. The independently running CKB remained available.

Current limits

This is the first protocol/adapter stage. Registry downloads, plugin add, background plugins and Fiber migration are deferred. Linked code runs with the user's permissions.

The Explorer adapter requires Node 22+ and an ordinary initialized devnet; it uses pinned private upstream imports and is not published. Formal distribution is gated on a named maintainer plus either released public APIs covered by semver or exclusive public-CLI integration with a pinned version and contract tests. A formal-distribution PR retaining source replacements, private imports, tsx export-map inspection or the prototype-only source override must not merge.

Windows immediately uses taskkill /T /F; process-tree cleanup and interrupt status still need native verification. The signal test skips Windows, so the ordinary three-platform CI pass does not close that gap. Crash recovery is manual for stale locks and temporary context files; a stored PID alone is insufficient for safe automatic lease reclamation. Custom-binary chain discovery also remains deferred. Downloaded sources, binaries and runtime dependencies are excluded from the PR.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added experimental local plugin support, including commands to link, list, and unlink plugins, and to run linked tools through the CLI.
    • Plugins can receive devnet context and forward their output through the CLI. A prototype Explorer adapter and context-probe example are available.
  • Documentation
    • Added setup guidance, usage instructions, and limitations for local plugins and the Explorer prototype.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved plugin command argument handling and shutdown cleanup.

The CLI adds local plugin linking, listing, discovery, and foreground execution. It validates plugin metadata, provides a versioned invocation context, and manages plugin process shutdown. An Explorer adapter and an opt-in smoke test demonstrate the plugin interface. Registry installation and background plugins remain deferred.

Changes: Local plugin system

Layer / File(s) Summary
Plugin contracts and lifecycle
src/plugins/manifest.ts, src/plugins/store.ts, src/plugins/context.ts, src/scripts/private.ts, tests/plugins.test.ts
The plugin system validates package metadata and Node compatibility, stores links with locking and run leases, and writes temporary context files. Tests cover manifest, registry, and context behavior.
Command dispatch and child execution
src/cli.ts, src/plugins/cli.ts, src/plugins/run.ts, tests/cli-errors.test.ts, tests/plugin-run.test.ts, tests/plugins.test.ts
The CLI registers plugin management commands and delegates linked plugin commands. The runner starts a child process, forwards shutdown signals, and releases its lease. Tests cover argument forwarding, JSON handling, exit status, and cleanup.
Explorer adapter experiment
examples/plugins/*, scripts/prepare-explorer-prototype.mjs, scripts/plugin-smoke.mjs, .gitignore
The Explorer adapter validates devnet context and RPC identity before starting the loopback server. The preparation script adapts a pinned checkout, and the smoke test exercises plugin and Explorer startup and cleanup.
Plugin documentation and release note
README.md, docs/plugins.md, docs/plugin-system-proposal.md, .changeset/plugin-system-proposal.md
The documentation describes local plugin commands, protocol details, the Explorer experiment, and deferred features. The changeset declares a minor CLI release.

Plugin shutdown may require manual lease recovery, and Explorer preparation does not yet ensure the documented source revision. Address these before relying on the experimental workflow.

Verify the Git revision and working tree before writing the marker.

The script checks only package metadata. It copies source/src and writes a marker with the pinned commit. A same-name/version checkout at another commit, or a checkout at the pinned HEAD with local changes to src/server.ts or imported files, can therefore be marked as pinned and executed.

The documentation requires source at the pinned revision and describes the imports as pinned. Reject non-Git sources, mismatched HEAD, and any dirty working tree, including untracked files, before copying.

Do not rethrow group-kill errors from signalChild.

On POSIX, process.kill(-child.pid, signal) can fail with an error other than ESRCH, for example EPERM. The code then rethrows from signalChild. Two callers are affected:

  • Signal listener (line 59): The exception escapes the listener and becomes an uncaught exception. The CLI stops without waiting for the child.
  • finally block (line 82): The exception skips context?.dispose() and lease.release(). The <command>.running lease stays on disk. Later unlink, link and run commands then fail until someone removes the file by hand.

Fall back to child.kill(signal) and keep the cleanup path non-throwing.
