Summary

offckb node stop (and every other caller of verifyDaemonIdentity: daemon start de-duplication, fiber stop/status) refused to recognize a live offckb daemon when the offckb CLI entry path contains a space, e.g. on macOS under ~/Library/Application Support/...:

Process 237585 does not appear to be the offckb daemon. Refusing to send signals to avoid killing an unrelated process. ...

Found by @RetricSu during the review of #531 (no separate issue).

Root cause

When no exact argv is available (macOS always; Linux when /proc/<pid>/cmdline is unreadable), verifyDaemonIdentity reads the flat command line from ps -o args= and tokenized it with splitCommandLine. ps joins argv with single spaces and never quotes, so

/usr/bin/node /Users/me/Library/Application Support/offckb/build/index.js node

split into /usr/bin/node, /Users/me/Library/Application, Support/offckb/build/index.js, ... The "script" token never matched the CLI entry, and the identity check failed closed.

Fix

src/util/daemon.ts:

  • Replace the tokenizer with commandLineRunsScript(cmdline, expectedScript). It does not guess token boundaries. It tries every space as the executable/script boundary and every later space (or the end) as the end of the script. It matches only when the executable is a Node runtime (exact process.execPath, or exact node/nodejs/node.exe basename) and the script resolves to exactly this installation's CLI entry. Comparison is realpath-normalized as before; it is case-insensitive on Windows and also accepts a quoted executable/script (Windows CommandLine).
  • The search is bounded to 64 split points.
  • Strictness is unchanged:
    • a different script, a script path that only shares a prefix, or a non-Node host is still rejected;
    • the exact-argv path (/proc) and the start-time (PID-reuse) check are unchanged.

Tests:

  • tests/daemon-command-line.test.ts (new): POSIX and Windows command lines with spaced script and Node paths, quoted and unquoted. Negative cases: foreign script, .bak/-other suffixes, truncated path, bash/cmd.exe hosts, empty line.
  • tests/daemon-locale.test.ts: end-to-end verifyDaemonIdentity through the ps path with an unquoted spaced CLI path (accepts), plus a sibling -other script (rejects). This test fails on develop.

Changeset: .changeset/daemon-stop-spaced-path.md (patch).

Before / after

Live, with the built CLI copied into a directory with a space (/tmp/offckb develop/ vs /tmp/offckb fixed/), node --daemon started, then node stop. The box is Linux, so the stop process was run with a --require preload that makes /proc/<pid>/cmdline unreadable. That forces the same ps -o args= path macOS always takes.

-- ps -o args= of the daemon:
/usr/bin/node /tmp/offckb develop/build/index.js node

develop: Process 237585 does not appear to be the offckb daemon. Refusing to send signals ...
(daemon, ckb run, ckb miner all still running)

this PR: Stopping CKB devnet daemon (PID 238732)...
           CKB devnet daemon stopped.
           (no processes left)

Still strict (live): with the same ps path, the fixed install's node stop still refuses a daemon started by the other install. The default Linux /proc path also still stops the daemon cleanly.

Verification

  • pnpm typecheck, pnpm build: pass. pnpm fmt leaves no diff.
  • pnpm lint: 0 errors (1 pre-existing warning in src/node/install.ts).
  • pnpm test:ci: 54/55 suites, 534 passed. The only failures are the 2 known isStoreLockHeld › with lsof cases in tests/fiber-lifecycle.test.ts that also fail on develop in this Linux environment (no usable lsof).
  • Windows was not run live; Windows command lines are covered by the unit tests above.

verifyDaemonIdentity tokenized the flat command line from 'ps -o args='
(macOS, or Linux without a readable /proc) with a quote-aware splitter.
ps never quotes, so a CLI entry under a path with spaces (macOS
~/Library/Application Support/...) was cut at the first space, the script
token never matched and 'offckb node stop' refused to stop a live daemon.

Match the command line instead: try every space as the executable/script
boundary and every later space (or the end) as the script end, accepting
only a Node executable followed by exactly this installation's CLI entry
(realpath-normalized, case-insensitive on Windows, quoted or not). The
exact-argv path (/proc) and the start-time check are unchanged.

Found during the review of #531.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Fixed offckb node stop so it correctly identifies the daemon when the CLI or Node executable path contains spaces.
    • Improved process matching across Windows and POSIX systems to avoid matching similarly prefixed script paths.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for daemon detection with paths containing spaces, quoted and unquoted commands, and mismatched script paths.

Walkthrough

Daemon identity checks now match flat process command lines against the Node executable and exact CLI script path, including paths with spaces. Tests cover POSIX and Windows matching, daemon verification, and command-flow test setup.

Changes

Daemon identity matching

Layer / File(s) Summary
Normalize and match command lines
src/util/daemon.ts, tests/daemon-command-line.test.ts
The matcher applies platform-specific path rules and tests command lines with quoted or unquoted paths, spaces, mismatches, and case differences.
Use matching during daemon verification
src/util/daemon.ts, tests/daemon-locale.test.ts, tests/node-command.test.ts, tests/node-quiet-mode.test.ts, tests/node-terminal-rpc.test.ts, .changeset/daemon-stop-spaced-path.md
Daemon verification uses the matcher for flat command lines and checks argv directly when available. Tests cover a CLI path with spaces. Command-flow tests mock stale-miner reaping, and a patch changeset records the fix.

The change makes daemon identity checks recognize CLI paths containing spaces. No merge-blocking risk remains. The one open comment is a small test-hygiene cleanup, and the Windows path was covered only by unit tests.

…form

The previous commit chose posix/win32 path rules from process.platform.
Tests (and anything else) that override process.platform then compared
paths with the wrong rules: on a Windows runner the node stop tests set
platform to 'linux', so the '/path/to/offckb' token from the ps mock was
resolved with posix rules while the CLI entry is a native 'D:\path\to\offckb',
and every identity check failed.

Default to the host's own path module (as before #533), including
realpath and Windows case-insensitivity; the explicit platform argument is
only used by unit tests that exercise another OS's command lines.
…nit tests

On windows-latest, node-terminal-rpc timed out (5 s) in its first test:
since #531, foreground startNode/nodeDevnet runs reapStaleMiners, which
lists processes through PowerShell CIM on Windows and can take seconds on
a cold runner (the suite already took ~5.4 s on the previous run). The
second failure in that file was fallout from the timed-out test.

Mock reapStaleMiners in node-terminal-rpc, node-quiet-mode and
node-command like node-supervisor already does; the reaper has its own
tests.

Clean up the temporary directory in finally.

afterEach already restores process.env.OFFCKB_CLI_PATH. However, a failed assertion before fs.rmSync leaves the temporary directory behind. Wrap the test body in try/finally and keep the existing environment restoration.
