📋 Changes

Adds passkey enrollment to the web My Account API , so web apps can let signed-in users add a passkey, the same as on Android and iOS.

New public API (auth0_flutter)

  • MyAccountWeb.enrollPasskeyChallenge({String? userIdentityId, String? connection}) returns a PasskeyEnrollmentChallenge.
  • MyAccountWeb.enrollPasskey({required PasskeyEnrollmentChallenge challenge, required PasskeyCredential credential}) returns a MyAccountPasskeyAuthenticationMethod.
  • Same signatures and types as the mobile MyAccountApi.
  • Newly exported from auth0_flutter_web.dart: PasskeyEnrollmentChallenge, PasskeyCredential, PasskeyAuthenticatorResponse, MyAccountPasskeyAuthenticationMethod.
  • Failures are thrown as MyAccountException, like the other web My Account methods.

Platform interface (auth0_flutter_platform_interface)

  • Auth0FlutterWebPlatform.enrollPasskeyChallenge / enrollPasskey. They throw UnimplementedError by default, so this only adds API.

Implementation

  • Reuses the existing spa-js calls MyAccountApiClient.enrollmentChallenge({type: 'passkey', …}) and enrollmentVerify({type: 'passkey', location, auth_session, authn_response}). No new proxy methods.
  • authParamsPublicKey is passed through as the raw WebAuthn creation options JSON, the same as on Android and iOS.
  • The enrolled method uses the mobile MyAccountPasskeyAuthenticationMethod.fromMap mapping.
  • The authn_response sent for verification contains only the passkey registration fields (clientDataJSON, attestationObject). The browser's credential.toJSON() also includes authenticatorData, which PasskeyCredential.fromMap keeps (passkey login needs it). The My Account API rejects it with 400: "must NOT have additional properties: 'authenticatorData'".

Docs (EXAMPLES.md, README, dartdoc)

  • A browser snippet using parseCreationOptionsFromJSON → navigator.credentials.create() → toJSON(), for Chrome/Edge 129+, Firefox 119+ and Safari 18.4+.
  • A second snippet for older browsers that does the base64url conversion by hand.
  • Requirements: the tenant needs a custom domain, and the page must be served from that domain or one of its subdomains (the WebAuthn rp.id).

🎯 Testing

Unit tests

  • auth0_flutter: 185 browser (+10) and 171 VM (+3) tests, all passing.
    • test/web/my_account_web_test.dart: MyAccountWeb passes the token, challenge and credential to the platform.
    • test/web/my_account_plugin_test.dart: the exact spa-js params (type: 'passkey', connection, identity_user_id, the location rebuilt from the id, auth_session, and an authn_response that excludes authenticatorData), result mapping and error mapping.
    • test/web/extensions/my_account_extensions_test.dart: challenge/method mapping, and the trimmed registration response.
  • auth0_flutter_platform_interface: 2 new "unimplemented" tests (316 total). One test fails on main already (credentials_test.dart "toMap expiresAt…"); it depends on the time zone and passes in UTC.
  • Analyzer: reports no new issues in either package.

Manual end-to-end (Chrome, auth0-spa-js 2.24.0, a tenant with a custom domain and passkeys enabled, the page served over HTTPS from a subdomain of the custom domain)

  • ✅ Login, then a /me/ token, then enrollPasskeyChallenge, then browser passkey creation, then enrollPasskey. The tenant log shows "Successfully enrolled authentication-method through My Account API".
  • ✅ The same flow using the "Supporting older browsers" snippet (manual base64url conversion, no parseCreationOptionsFromJSON/toJSON()) also enrolls successfully.
  • ✅ The enrolled passkey is listed by getAuthenticationMethods.
  • ✅ On the canonical domain, the custom-domain 400 comes through as a MyAccountException.
  • ✅ From localhost, the browser SecurityError occurs before any SDK call, as documented.

Add MyAccountWeb.enrollPasskeyChallenge and enrollPasskey, with the same
signatures and types as the mobile MyAccountApi, backed by the auth0-spa-js
MyAccountApiClient enrollment calls. The verification response contains only
the passkey registration fields: the My Account API rejects the
authenticatorData that the browser's credential.toJSON() includes. Adds the
matching Auth0FlutterWebPlatform methods, tests, and EXAMPLES/README docs
(including a snippet for browsers without parseCreationOptionsFromJSON/toJSON,
and the custom domain and same-site origin requirements).

Walkthrough

The web My Account API adds passkey enrollment. It requests a WebAuthn challenge, submits the resulting credential, and returns the enrolled passkey authentication method.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 89df2

Web passkey enrollment is compatible with the documented SDK version, but malformed service responses can produce unclear errors. Guard those responses before merging or accept this bounded risk.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 89df2

The new enrollment flow reuses existing authenticated requests and preserves the challenge and credential fields needed for verification. No introduced authorization bypass was established. Risk remains nonminimal because account binding, replay prevention, and recovery after interrupted enrollment depend on service behavior that was not verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The security-sensitive outcome is enrollment of a persistent authentication method. Caller-supplied identity, connection, challenge, and credential values reach the My Account service using the supplied access token. Intended exposure is the token holder's authorized account within the configured tenant, but maximum cross-account or cross-tenant reach cannot be established without service authorization evidence.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new flow inherits existing controls: verification locations are constructed under the configured API base with an encoded method ID, each request's token is captured by a separate client/fetcher, and optional DPoP configuration is preserved. These controls predate the PR and counter arbitrary verification-host selection and shared-token confusion; they do not establish server-side ownership validation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The client exposes separate stateless challenge and verification calls, with browser creation between them. It does not locally consume challenges, serialize enrollment, or undo browser credential creation. Expiry, replay handling, concurrent enrollment, cancellation, and recovery after a failed or ambiguously completed verification therefore require service guarantees and caller handling. Missing lifecycle evidence is a coverage gap, not an established unsafe transition.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Document the service guarantees for subject and tenant binding, challenge expiry and single use, and reconciliation after browser creation or verification interruption. Targeted service-contract checks for mismatched accounts, replay, and ambiguous completion would strengthen confidence without treating client-side validation as an authorization boundary.

Guard the passkey response maps before conversion.

authn_params_public_key is nullable. A missing value causes dartify()! to throw. A non-map challenge or verify response causes the cast or Map.from conversion to throw. _myAccountCall then routes these Dart errors through generic JS error conversion instead of returning a clear response-shape error. Throw MyAccountException.unknown from both mappers; _myAccountCall preserves it.
