Ghost-CLI's ghost install --no-setup-nginx --no-setup-ssl, for operators who already run nginx or Apache on the host. Until now a production site always included Caddy. The only way around it was an unsupported edit to compose.yml, which stack updates overwrite.

What changed

  • install --domain example.com --no-caddy selects a new site-mode profile, no-caddy, which runs ghost and db only. SITE_MODE stays production, so backup, restore, update, self-update and the supervisor need no changes. It writes no caddy/ or tinybird/, skips the 80/443 check, and keeps Ghost on 127.0.0.1:${GHOST_PORT}. It also works with --import for a production bundle, which suits a Ghost-CLI site moving to Docker on the same server while nginx stays in place.
  • Refusals: --with activitypub (and analytics, through config validate) is refused on a no-caddy site, with a message pointing at the docs. Also refused: --no-caddy with --local, with --email (Caddy's ACME account), and with a local site's bundle.
  • Verification and check: Ghost's health check runs, plus an ingress note saying the operator's proxy serves the site. That note gives the URL and the loopback port the proxy must send to with X-Forwarded-Proto: https. Nothing claims HTTPS works, because the manager cannot reach the host's loopback port from its container.
  • Docs: configuration.md#your-own-proxy has an nginx server block and Apache directives, a table of the headers, and a warning that a wrong X-Forwarded-Proto gives redirect loops and breaks secure cookies. The "unsupported customization" paragraphs in configuration.md and install.md are replaced. reference.md covers the install steps, the verification table and ports.
  • Shape: this follows S13 (✨ Added a shared Caddy for several production sites on one server (S13) #427): layoutOf, a Layout type, the payload's UNUSED map, and MODE_PROFILES mapping the profile to its mode. ✨ Added a shared Caddy for several production sites on one server (S13) #427 has not merged into next-docker yet, so the two branches each add those pieces. Whichever merges second needs a small rebase to combine them (add shared-caddy/infra beside no-caddy).

Shared Caddy (S13)

--no-caddy is allowed on a server running the shared Caddy: a no-caddy site is not on the ghost-ingress network and binds nothing beyond its loopback port, so the two don't conflict. After #427 merges, --no-caddy and the shared-caddy layout should be made mutually exclusive in install, because a site uses one ingress or the other.

Testing

  • manager/: format, lint, typecheck, and pnpm test (605 pass), with new install, import, config and verify cases.
  • Real Compose: an integration test (test/integration/compose.test.ts) checks that no-caddy,supervisor resolves to db, ghost, supervisor, with Ghost on 127.0.0.1:2368. I checked the same resolution locally with docker compose config --services. I did not run the integration suite locally.
  • e2e: tests/e2e/install.sh now installs --no-caddy beside the existing stand-in proxy holding 80/443. It then curls Ghost on loopback with Host and X-Forwarded-Proto: https, expecting the site JSON, and without the header, expecting a redirect to https://. Finally check must pass. CI runs this; I did not run it locally.

Walkthrough

The change adds a production layout for sites that use an operator-managed proxy instead of Caddy. The manager accepts --no-caddy, selects layout-specific profiles and payloads, skips Caddy routes and port checks, and reports proxy forwarding requirements. Verification checks Ghost health and reports externally managed ingress. Documentation and tests cover installation, imports, configuration, and proxy behavior.

Outside diff Scope the installation verification claim to Caddy-backed sites.

Scope the installation verification claim to Caddy-backed sites.

For a proxy site, installation checks Ghost and MySQL health, then reports an ingress note. It cannot reach the host proxy. This generic step says that installation reaches every site through its ingress, which conflicts with the new verification table and can give false confidence that HTTPS was checked. Distinguish Caddy ingress checks from proxy-mode health-only verification. Apply the same wording to the install summary. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the “Start and verify” guidance and install summary to distinguish
verification modes: Caddy-backed sites are checked through their ingress, while
proxy-mode sites receive Ghost and MySQL health checks only and report an
ingress note without claiming the host proxy or HTTPS was reached.

Ghost-CLI could install a site without setting up nginx or SSL
(`ghost install --no-setup-nginx --no-setup-ssl`), for hosts where the
operator already runs a proxy. Here, a production site always included
Caddy, and the only way around it was editing compose.yml to drop the
caddy service: unsupported, and overwritten by stack updates.

`install --domain example.com --no-caddy` now selects a `proxy` site-mode
profile that runs Ghost and MySQL only. SITE_MODE stays `production`, so
backup, restore, update, self-update and the supervisor treat it as any
production site; only the layout differs, the same way S13's member
layout is expressed (layoutOf, the payload's UNUSED map). It writes no
caddy/ or tinybird/, does not need ports 80 and 443, and keeps Ghost on
127.0.0.1:${GHOST_PORT}.

ActivityPub and analytics are refused on such a site, pointing at the
docs: their routes are written for Caddy, and the manager does not
configure the operator's proxy. The manager also cannot reach the host's
loopback port from its container, so verification reports Ghost's health
and a note that the ingress is the operator's, rather than claiming HTTPS
works. The docs give the nginx server block and Apache directives, and
say what a wrong X-Forwarded-Proto does.

- compose.yml: ghost and db also run under the `proxy` profile.
- manager/src/site.ts: the `proxy` profile selects production mode; the
  Layout type and layoutOf; proxy refuses analytics and activitypub;
SiteFacts carries the layout; no Caddy ports in .env for it.
- manager/src/payload.ts: payload files chosen by layout, not mode.
- manager/src/commands/install.ts: --no-caddy, refused with --local and
--email, and with a local bundle on --import; no 80/443 check, no
routes, and a summary that points the proxy at the loopback port.
- manager/src/verify.ts: no Caddy or HTTPS checks behind a proxy; an
  ingress note instead.
- manager/src/config.ts, backup.ts, commands/self-update.ts,
commands/doctor.ts: judge Caddy by layout rather than mode.
- docs/configuration.md, install.md, reference.md: the supported path,
  replacing the unsupported compose.yml edit.
- manager/test/: install, import, config and verify cases, and the real
Compose resolving the profile in the integration tests.
- tests/e2e/install.sh: installs --no-caddy beside a proxy holding 80
and 443, and curls Ghost on loopback with and without
  X-Forwarded-Proto: https.
"proxy" read as an HTTP proxy setting, or as Caddy itself, which is
also a proxy. `no-caddy` is the same word as the install flag and sits
beside `shared-caddy`, both saying what happens to Caddy. The docs
heading and anchor, "Your own proxy", stay: they describe the
operator's nginx or Apache, which is a proxy.
- docs/configuration.md: the nginx example uses `listen 443 ssl http2`,
  since `http2 on` needs nginx 1.25.1 and Ubuntu 24.04 ships 1.24.
- docs/install.md: keeping Ghost-CLI's nginx is its own move, where
nginx stays enabled and keeps 80 and 443, rather than a clause under
the Caddy move that then disables nginx. Installation is described as
verifying through Caddy, or Ghost's health alone behind a proxy.
- docs/reference.md: the same, for the start-and-verify step.
- manager/src/commands/install.ts: `--no-start` also prints the proxy
steps, which a site behind a proxy needs before it is started.
- manager/test/install.test.ts: asserts it.
