Guidance for coding agents on code hygiene and best practices - #1495
Conversation
…skip ci] Adds a reference doc that answers the questions a hygiene pass keeps asking in this repo, so each session does not re-measure them: which files have grown large enough that adding to them hides the addition, which subpackage arrangements already exist to follow when splitting one, what actually made the test suite slow, and which smells review rounds have corrected before. The general guidance (look for duplication, overlapping paths, files that lost their subject, tests that no longer earn their place) is agent-level and lives outside the repo; this file is the Antenna-specific layer it points at. Also wires it in where a session will hit it: two checkboxes in the pre-review checklist, a line in the agent-reference list, and a row in the docs index. The stale "~3700 lines" note on ami/main/models.py is corrected to the measured 5,236, with ami/main/tests.py at 7,654 named alongside it, since the old figure understated the case for splitting by about 1,500 lines. …ecifics [skip ci] Add a short "Code hygiene" section to the agent instructions with the questions to ask before a PR is ready, and rewrite the reference doc to hold what those questions need to know about this repository: measured hotspots, the module precedents to follow when splitting ami/main, the target import direction and its current exceptions, where configuration lives, the measured causes of the slow test suite, and scan commands that were each run against main. This was written by AI, for AI, with an AI summary of the PR? Is this something I should be reviewing? I don't have any reason to oppose this PR, but I think we need to redirect how this is done rather than adding to this large mass of intended AI attempted config. Some of this seems like it's personal config that should be shared differently, and some of it just needs to be organized. This is a harsh overview and some of these points are probably me not understanding the motivation rather than actual problems, but I feel that while the changes of this PR may be positive, these problems are larger and working against what the PR is trying to improve:

meh, my comment got too detailed and I'll just add that to my notes on the directions I'm thinking about for our docs. The tl;dr is that I don't have a problem with this PR, but I think the whole .agents and docs subdirectories need a revamp, this PR won't get in the way of that. |

Thanks for looking at this @kra. In this case, each point is based on something that I was personally frustrated with repeating at the end of multiple coding sessions, and the PRs are much better after I ask these things. I find that the agent spits out an initial version, then tends to get stuck and biased by its own work. So it helps to force it to step back and reflect. To look at the purpose and impacts of the changes, rather than the syntax of each line. I agree our But generally, if you start a session from the antenna/ repo directory, I find that our current harness is working well. It knows our project and the data models and gotchyas from the start. |

…was squash-merged #1461 landed on main as one squash commit, so its files reached main with no history link to this branch's earlier merges of the #1461 branch. Each add/add conflict was resolved by keeping this branch's side, which is #1461's final version of the file plus #1469's changes: main's copy of every conflicting file except ami/ml/results/tests.py equals the #1461 head this branch had merged. That test file takes main's version, which adds the test for #1461's last commit (the read-only results admin). Main's other changes (#1476, #1420, #1495) merged cleanly. Summary
This is a list of checks that I find myself asking the coding agents to fix and revise whenever I review their work. I wrote out the list and provided examples for each, but the final descriptions in this PR are written by Claude Opus 5.5.
