Summary

Skip the categorical vocabulary comparison when the input already holds the fitted vocabulary tensor. This removes an aten.equal compilation barrier in aligned prediction inputs.

Description of the change

AlignCategories remaps query codes and reuses its fitted vocabulary objects. Comparing the same object with itself is redundant; the four-line identity shortcut avoids that comparison. Separate vocabulary objects still use the existing value/order check.

This addresses one prediction blocker. Code-range validation is a separate fix; this PR alone does not enable full-graph KumoTabular prediction or fit.

Reproduce the compilation failure

On main b8ac2dc, PyTorch 2.14, the check below fails because Tensor.equal returns a data-dependent Python boolean. CUDA validation used an NVIDIA L4 with PyTorch 2.14.0+cu130; CPU reproduces the same barrier with device="cpu".

import torch
from sdm import CategoricalTensor, Stype, TableTensor
from sdm.processing import AddCategoryCounts

table = TableTensor(
    columns={Stype.categorical: ("color",)},
    categorical=CategoricalTensor(
        code=torch.tensor([[0], [1], [0]], dtype=torch.int32, device="cuda"),
        categories=(torch.arange(2, device="cuda"),),
    ),
)
processor = AddCategoryCounts().to("cuda")
processor.fit(table)

from sdm.processing.categorical._categorical import _check_categories

# Isolate this check from the separate code-range compilation blocker.
def checked_codes(table):
    _check_categories(table, processor._categories)
    return table.categorical.code + 1

compiled = torch.compile(checked_codes, backend="inductor", fullgraph=True)
compiled(table)

Recorded main exception (torch._dynamo.exc.Unsupported):

Data dependent operator
  Explanation: Operator `aten.equal.default` has a non-Tensor output whose value is dependent on the data of Tensor inputs.
  Hint: Consider wrapping the operator into a PyTorch-understood custom operator (see https://pytorch.org/tutorials/advanced/custom_ops_landing_page.html)

  Developer debug context: aten.equal.default

Validation

Manual check Result
CPU Inductor processor transforms, graph breaks allowed Shared and equal-but-distinct vocabularies match eager; mismatched vocabularies still rejected
L4 KumoTabular predict, this fix alone, fullgraph=True Passes the vocabulary check, then reaches the separate code-range blocker
L4 KumoTabular predict, both fixes, fullgraph=True One Inductor graph, zero breaks, exact eager output parity

The model check used the standard small classification architecture, default recipe, pretrained=False, 128 context rows and 16 query rows after eager fit. It verifies compiler integration, not trained-model accuracy or performance. No test additions.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Category validation now handles cases where input categories share the fitted vocabulary, while continuing to check values and ordering when needed. This preserves existing validation behavior and avoids redundant work in the shared-vocabulary case.

_check_categories now skips device alignment and value-and-order comparison when the actual category tensor is the same object as the fitted vocabulary.

Do not bypass NaN vocabulary validation on the identity path.

AlignCategories defines NaN category values as non-matching and maps them to -1. However, _check_categories skips all comparison when actual is expected, including a shared vocabulary containing NaN. A downstream ImputeMode or Count transform can then accept a valid-range code that points to a NaN category instead of rejecting it as non-matching.

Suggested fix
         if actual is expected:
+            if actual.is_floating_point() and actual.isnan().any():
+                raise ValueError(
+ "Expected the category vocabulary for categorical column "
+ f"{columns[index]!r} to match the fitted values and order. "
+ "Use 'AlignCategories' before this processor for "
+                    "independently tensorized inputs."

Update the identity check in _check_categories so a shared floating-point

of skipping comparison. Preserve the fast path for identical vocabularies
