Summary

Allow SDM tensor wrappers to record CUDA streams inside torch.compile(fullgraph=True). This supports GPU prediction when cached values include wrappers such as a string class vocabulary.

Description of the change

GPU prediction transfers caches on a background stream, then records their use on the compute stream so PyTorch keeps their storage alive. Compilation emits streams.record_stream.default, which the wrappers currently reject even though eager stream recording works.

Forward this operation to every backing tensor, including nested wrappers. Match the operation by name because PyTorch registers it lazily; importing a private Dynamo module just to register handlers would add an unnecessary dependency.

Minimal reproduction on Python 3.12, PyTorch 2.14.0+cu130, CUDA 13, RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell:

import torch
from sdm import ColumnarTensor

def record(values, stream):
    ColumnarTensor((values,)).record_stream(stream)

values = torch.arange(8, device="cuda")
torch.compile(record, fullgraph=True)(values, torch.cuda.Stream())

Main raises:

NotImplementedError: 'streams.record_stream.default' is not supported for 'ColumnarTensor'

This fixes the stream-recording component. End-to-end fullgraph compilation of public predict() remains separate work.

Validation

Seven focused checks passed with no skips on the GPU environment above. The compiled lifetime checks cover six wrapper types; replacing forwarding with a no-op still produces three data-corruption failures under allocation reuse. This verifies that forwarding protects storage rather than merely allowing graph capture.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Stream recording now works consistently for categorical, columnar, nullable, table, and variable-length tensors. The requested stream is recorded across the tensors represented by each of these types, including when a tensor contains multiple underlying tensors. Other operations retain their existing behavior. This improves stream tracking consistency across supported tensor representations.

Structured tensor dispatch now handles streams.record_stream.default by applying the operation to each backing tensor identified by the tensor’s flattened attributes.

Changes: Record streams for structured tensors

Layer / File(s) Summary
Forward operations to backing tensors
sdm/tensor/mixin.py
Adds _record_compiled_stream, which calls the record-stream operation on each backing tensor named by tensor.__tensor_flatten__().
Route tensor dispatch to the helper
sdm/tensor/categorical.py, sdm/tensor/columnar.py, sdm/tensor/nullable.py, sdm/tensor/table.py, sdm/tensor/var_len.py
Each tensor type routes streams.record_stream.default through _record_compiled_stream. Other unhandled operations retain their existing fallback behavior.

Restore the compiled stream-lifetime tests.

Commit 79afba4 removed the allocation-reuse test for CategoricalTensor, ColumnarTensor, NullableTensor, VarLenTensor, StringTensor, and TableTensor. Restore it so full-graph forwarding remains protected by the asynchronous copy and torch.testing.assert_close assertions.

The remaining test only checks that eager record_stream() returns None. It does not detect a no-op or incorrect _record_stream_op implementation.

Add the compiled lifetime checks to the test suite.

The PR reports that disabling forwarding caused data corruption, but it does not include those checks. Add GPU regression tests for the wrappers and nested blocks under allocation reuse. (github.com)
