Add versioned documentation publishing and navigation - #1291
Prepare the documentation for Read the Docs hosting and native versioning, replacing the proposed custom GitHub Pages archive and selector.
Description of the change
Addresses #1246 and the maintainer’s suggestion to move to Read the Docs. The build configuration installs the project and documentation dependencies with CPU-only PyTorch on Python 3.11, fetches Git history for package version detection, and treats Sphinx warnings as errors. Version-specific canonical URLs also keep the theme’s copied-source links within the correct release or PR preview.
GitHub Actions retains strict HTML builds and doctests with read-only permissions, but stops publishing to Pages. A maintainer checklist covers connecting the hosted project, activating versions, handling historical release configurations, and moving links/redirects once the final hosted URL is verified.
Validation
The Read the Docs configuration passed official schema validation. Its exact checkout and installation hooks passed in a clean Python 3.11 environment, and Linux dependency resolution selected CPU-only PyTorch. Strict HTML builds passed for local, latest, stable, and PR-preview environment settings, with canonical/copied-source URL checks on root and nested API pages. All 54 doctests passed with model downloads disabled, along with the repository’s pre-commit checks.
Hosted project creation, live Addons behavior, and version activation still require maintainer access and have not been verified. No production deployment has been performed.
Documentation is now configured for hosting on Read the Docs, with versioned releases and canonical URLs.
Added guidance for building the documentation and running doctests, with warnings treated as errors.
Documentation builds are validated through GitHub Actions; automatic publishing to GitHub Pages has been removed.
The documentation build now uses Read the Docs configuration. The GitHub Actions workflow no longer publishes HTML to gh-pages and uses read-only contents permission. Sphinx reads the canonical URL from READTHEDOCS_CANONICAL_URL. New maintainer documentation covers local builds and Read the Docs setup.

Summary
Read the Docs build and workflow configuration .readthedocs.yaml, .github/workflows/doc.yml
The Read the Docs configuration installs documentation dependencies and runs Sphinx with warnings treated as failures. The workflow uses read-only contents permission, fetches full repository history, and removes the push step that published HTML to gh-pages.
Canonical URL and maintainer setup docs/source/conf.py, docs/README.md
Sphinx sets html_baseurl from READTHEDOCS_CANONICAL_URL, or an empty string when unset. The documentation adds local build commands and Read the Docs setup guidance.
NVIDIA/structured-data-models#1246 — The issue requests versioned documentation, and this change documents Read the Docs version setup.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 77ed7
This moves documentation builds to Read the Docs and stops GitHub Pages publication. The old Pages site stays online but will no longer update until the maintainer migration steps are done. The only concrete issue is a low-severity CI hardening item: disable checkout credential persistence.

Disable checkout credential persistence.
No later step needs Git authentication. Dependency installation can access the persisted read-only token. Set persist-credentials: false on the checkout step.
Based on learnings, disable credential persistence when build tooling executes dependency code and no later Git operation needs credentials.

Removing the Pages publication step stops updates to the site linked by README.md Lines 11 and 15. Read the Docs setup and redirects are still pending, so readers will receive stale documentation after this change. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Keep Pages publication until the hosted site, public links, and redirects are verified.

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ve reworked this PR to use Read the Docs instead of custom GitHub Pages versioning. Local validation passed, and the PR description now includes the changes, test results, and remaining maintainer setup steps.
