Pull Request

Summary

A Jellyfin user with a parental limit saw everything Seerr offers through Moonfin and could request any of it, while the custom rows were already held to that limit. The proxy now holds Seerr to it too: list answers lose the titles above the limit and the unrated ones, a details page above it answers 403, and so does a request or watchlist entry for one. The page counts stay as Seerr sent them. A user without a limit is passed through exactly as before, and without a TMDB key a limited user sees nothing from Seerr, the rule the 2.4.0 notes state for the custom rows.

Every Seerr call from Core and Smart-TV passes ProxyApiRequest as one buffered JSON body, so the filter lives there and no client changes.

Type of Change

  • API / endpoint change

Area

  • Seerr integration

Changes Made

  • shared/Seerr/SeerrParentalFilter.cs: pure, compiled into both ports. Knows which paths answer with a list of titles (discover/*, search, media, movie|tv/{id}/similar|recommendations, person/{id}/combined_credits, collection/{id}), which are details pages (movie|tv/{id}, tv/tvdb/{id}) and which POSTs name a title (request, watchlist); filters the results, parts, cast and crew arrays through a verdict delegate, each distinct title judged once, six at a time; reads the TMDB id out of a details answer or a request body.
  • Jellyfin/backend/Api/SeerrProxyController.cs and Emby/Emby.Plugins.Moonfin/Api/SeerrService.cs: build the verdict from ServerRatingLimitService.ForUser and TmdbRatingService.GetCertificationAsync (user's key, else the server's), refuse a request before forwarding, refuse a details page and filter a list after the answer, flush the rating cache after a list. A lookup that fails counts as a title that cannot be placed and is hidden.
  • Jellyfin/backend/Services/TmdbApiKeys.cs: the key resolution CustomRowFetchService had privately, shared with the proxy. TmdbRatingService.FlushAsync on both ports.
  • shared/Seerr.Tests/SeerrParentalFilterTests.cs, compiled into both test projects: path matching, a page keeps allowed titles and people with its counts, each title judged once by its TMDB id, credits and collections in their own arrays, entries without an id or type dropped, other answers untouched.

Known limit, said here on purpose: Smart-TV's Discover rows stop paging when a page has fewer than 20 items, so a filtered row on the TV is shorter than it could be. Core pages by totalPages. A refill from the next upstream page can follow.

Client Impact

  • No client changes needed

Compatibility

  • Change to the settings profile is additive only, no renamed or removed properties (no settings touched)
  • Older clients still work, unknown fields are ignored and no keys were removed (same JSON shape, fewer entries)

Testing

  • Built the plugin and deployed to a Jellyfin server (Jellyfin 12.2.0; the 2.4.0 source with this patch applied, so the server stays on released code)
  • Verified against a live client (which one: Moonfin for Android 2.6.0 and Moonfin for Tizen 2.10.0, signed in as a child account with a Dutch limit of 9)
  • Manual testing completed

Test Steps

  1. dotnet test on both test projects (504 and 346 pass, 26 new in each) and the salvage tool.
  2. As the child's token through the proxy: discover/trending returns only titles rated AL, 6 or 9 for NL; search?query=carrie returns no Carrie; movie/<Carrie> answers 403; POST request for it answers 403 before Seerr sees it; movie/862 (Toy Story) answers 200. As an adult: 20 trending results, Carrie opens, nothing rewritten.
  3. On the phone and the TV as the child: the Seerr rows show only suitable titles, a request for one goes through.

Screenshots (if applicable)

Child, GET /Moonfin/Seerr/Api/movie/<id above the limit>:

403 {"message":"This title is above the parental rating of this account"}

Checklist

  • Code builds successfully
  • Code follows project style and conventions
  • No unnecessary commented-out code
  • No new warnings introduced
  • Any new setting keys match the client-side keys exactly (none added)

Review follow-up

  • SeerrParentalFilter.IsJudged(method, path) says whether a call is one the limit applies to (a GET of a list or a details page, a POST that names a title); both proxies resolve the user's limit for those calls only, so a PUT, a DELETE or any other GET costs nothing.
  • A part of collection/{id} that declares no mediaType is taken for a movie, which is what the Seerr contract makes it; elsewhere an element that declares nothing still goes.
  • The tests keep what the verdict was asked in a ConcurrentBag per test and compare without an order.

A Jellyfin user with a parental limit saw everything Seerr offers
through Moonfin: trending, popular, genres, search, similar titles,
collections, any details page, and could request any of it. The custom
rows were already held to the same limit. The proxy now judges each
title by its TMDB certification, with the rating service and cache the
custom rows use: lists lose the titles above the limit and the ones
nobody rated, a details page above it answers 403, and so does a
request or watchlist entry for one. The page counts stay as Seerr sent
them. A user without a limit is passed through as before, and without
a TMDB key a limited user sees nothing, as with the custom rows. The
filter is one shared class with its tests, wired into both ports.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Seerr requests and title details now respect each user’s parental rating limit. Titles that exceed the limit or cannot be rated are blocked, and supported lists omit them. Requests outside these checks and users without a rating limit continue to work as before.
    • TMDb rating results are saved after list filtering.
  • Bug Fixes

    • TMDb ratings can use a user-specific API key when available, with the server-wide key as a fallback.

The Emby and Jellyfin Seerr proxies now apply user parental rating limits to title requests, detail responses, and list results. Shared code identifies Seerr paths and filters list entries using TMDB certification verdicts. TMDB key resolution and cache flushing support these checks.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f6047

The change generally reduces access and denies titles when rating checks fail. Its completeness still depends on matching Seerr’s deployed request and response formats. Policy-reading failures and country-specific cached ratings also limit assurance that parental restrictions remain effective across failures and configuration changes.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The assessed boundary affects authenticated users accessing the configured Seerr integration through either server port: title metadata returned to limited accounts and creation of title requests or watchlist entries. Forwarding retains the caller-associated Seerr session; the changed flow does not establish acquisition of administrator credentials or cross-user session authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The watchlist candidate remains deferred. RequestTarget prefers mediaId over tmdbId, and the checked body is forwarded unchanged. A title-identity mismatch would require deployed Seerr to accept conflicting fields and select a different identifier from the filter. That upstream contract remains unavailable, so this is not a verified authorization bypass.
  • inferred — The person-search candidate also remains deferred. Filtering retains direct person records and does not traverse nested title data. If deployed person results contain movie or TV objects, those nested objects would remain unjudged; the deployed response shape was not established. Earlier inspection cited a generic external schema, which does not settle the deployed contract.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Parental policy is selected from the authenticated server user, not a user identifier in the title body. Recognized title POSTs are judged before the sensitive upstream operation. Successful recognized detail/list responses are judged before delivery, while Seerr’s existing session authentication and permission checks remain in the forwarding layer.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — List decisions are assembled before response rewriting is returned. Rating-cache persistence failures are logged rather than replacing the completed authorization decision. A corrupt persisted Jellyfin cache loads as an empty cache, allowing fresh lookups instead of trusting unreadable state.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate the filter against authoritative deployed Seerr request and response fixtures. Consider path-specific target parsing, rejection of conflicting title identifiers, and filtering of any nested title-bearing person fields confirmed by that contract.
  • proposed — Represent an unreadable parental policy separately from a successfully confirmed unrestricted policy, so policy-resolution failures cannot silently disable the new boundary.
  • proposed — Bind cached certifications to their effective rating-country context and define recovery for existing entries without that provenance. Validate concurrent country changes and restart recovery before relying on those entries for authorization. Credential-specific partitioning would require evidence that credentials change certification semantics.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #324 requires non-title entries, including persons and other entries, to pass through list filtering. In shared/Seerr/SeerrParentalFilter.cs, Keeps returns false when an entry has no mediaType. The filter therefore removes such entries. This conflicts with the issue requirement and with the review follow-up statement that an entry without a declared type still goes. The remaining implementation covers the required paths, rating verdicts, 403 responses, key fallback, pagination fields, and both ports.

Resolution

Update Keeps and its tests so non-collection entries that are not identified as movie or tv, including entries with no mediaType, pass through. Keep the collection fallback that treats an untyped collection part as a movie. Retain removal of identifiable titles with no ID and titles rejected by the rating verdict.

Remove the shared static Asked list, or the order-sensitive assertion can flake.

xUnit runs all tests in one class sequentially by default, so the class is safe today. The verdict callback still runs under Task.WhenAll with up to six calls at once. List.Add is not thread-safe. EachTitleIsJudgedOnceAndByItsTmdbId also asserts the exact order of the HashSet entries. In the current tests, Task.FromResult finishes synchronously, so the order holds. Please use a local ConcurrentBag and compare the entries without regard to order. Then the test stays correct if the verdict becomes async.

Resolve the limit only for proxy calls that use it.

VerdictFor runs on every proxied request, including PUT, DELETE, and unrelated GETs. For limited users, it also resolves the profile on each of those calls. The cost is small, but this matches the Jellyfin path. You can move the call inside the method and path checks to skip the work. This is optional.

…arts for movies

The limit was resolved for every proxied call, a PUT or a DELETE
included, and on Emby that meant a profile lookup each time. The proxy
now asks the shared filter first whether the method and path are ones
the limit applies to: a GET of a list or a details page, or a POST that
names a title. Seerr does not promise the mediaType field on a
collection's parts, and a part without it was dropped as something that
could not be judged; under collection/{id} such a part is a movie. The
tests keep what the verdict was asked in a bag of their own per test and
compare it without an order.

All three points are in f604765: the limit is resolved only for the calls it applies to (shared IsJudged, both ports), a collection part without mediaType is a movie, and the tests use a per-test ConcurrentBag with an order-free comparison. Both suites pass: 515 on Jellyfin, 357 on Emby.
