Pull Request

Summary

Adds the Moonbase backend support for Moonfin's Skip Trailer and Seerr requests in Cinema Mode.

This includes trailer identification for Jellyfin and Emby, settings synchronization, and server-managed defaults for the new Cinema Mode controls.

For the full feature explanation, screenshots, and client-side implementation, see the companion Moonfin PR #1832

Moonfin-Client/Moonfin-Core#1832

Related Issues

Companion to the Moonfin Cinema Mode Skip Trailer and Seerr requests feature.

Type of Change

  • Bug fix
  • New feature
  • Refactor
  • Performance improvement
  • API / endpoint change
  • Settings schema change
  • Documentation update
  • Build/CI change
  • Other (describe):

Area

  • Settings sync / profiles
  • Admin defaults / config page
  • Ratings (MDBList / TMDB)
  • Notifications / Push (FCM / relay)
  • Seerr integration
  • Games / Emulators
  • Custom home rows
  • Web Client (Go to Moonfin-Core repo)
  • Other / shared

Changes Made

  • Added a Cinema Mode media-resolution endpoint for Jellyfin and Emby, supporting trailer metadata, attached owners, exact-path matching, embedded TMDB/TVDB IDs, and playback-context fallback.
  • Added an optional filename/title identification fallback, disabled by default.
  • Added settings synchronization and administrator defaults for Cinema Mode countdown, minimum clip length, and button auto-hide.
  • Added checks to avoid ambiguous or incorrect trailer matches, while keeping playback independent of identification failures.

Client Impact

  • No client changes needed

  • Companion client PR(s) required, linked above

  • New setting keys added:

    • cinemaModeSkipCountdown (optional string)
    • cinemaModeSkipAutoHide (optional string)
    • cinemaModeSkipMinDurationSeconds (optional integer)

These match the setting names used by Moonfin.

CinemaFilenameSearchEnabled is a separate Moonbase administrator setting and is not synchronized as a client preference.

Compatibility

  • Change to the settings profile is additive only, no renamed or removed properties
  • New properties use the same type the client sends
  • Migration added for any renamed or removed settings (not applicable)
  • Older clients still work, unknown fields are ignored and no keys were removed

Testing

  • Built the plugin and deployed to a Jellyfin server
  • Verified against a live client: Moonfin Android
  • Manual testing completed for the Jellyfin identification paths

Verified trailer identification using typed and untyped TMDB metadata, attached owners, matching file paths, embedded TMDB/TVDB filename IDs, and title-based fallback.

Confirmed that embedded filename IDs work with optional filename/title search disabled. The companion Moonfin PR contains the full testing details.

Test Steps

  1. Install the matching Moonfin and Moonbase builds, then enable Cinema Mode.
  2. Play trailers with complete metadata, attached owners, and incomplete metadata requiring Moonbase resolution. Verify that Seerr identifies the advertised movie or series.
  3. Verify that Cinema Mode settings synchronize and that disabling optional filename/title search does not affect metadata, owner, or embedded-ID identification.

Screenshots (if applicable)

See the companion Moonfin PR for the client-side interface and demonstrations.

Checklist

  • Code builds successfully
  • Code follows project style and conventions
  • No unnecessary commented-out code
  • No new warnings introduced
  • Any new setting keys match the client-side keys exactly

Let admins set the countdown display, auto-hide delay, and minimum clip
length for Skip and Request buttons on Jellyfin and Emby.

Add the three preferences to the synced profile and admin defaults.
Keep zero distinct from an unset minimum clip length, and label the
controls clearly as Cinema Mode settings.
Add an authenticated Cinema Mode endpoint that returns the advertised
movie or series as a TMDB ID and media type. Share the lookup rules with Emby.

Prefer trailer metadata and owners, recover attached owners by matching
file paths, and use playback context when the media type is missing.
Keep filename provider IDs and TVDB mapping available without title searches.
Add an optional filename or display-name search fallback, disabled by default.

Read item and owner metadata without library visibility filtering so private
Cinema Mode videos can be identified. Use Jellyfin's compatible item-query
API and return an unresolved result when lookup fails or times out.
Expose the Cinema Mode endpoint using the shared resolver and add the
optional filename-search setting to Emby's configuration page.

Support Emby's string item IDs, parent and series relationships, and
owner recovery through matching attached trailer files. Keep authentication
and Emby's item visibility checks.
Check that Jellyfin applies the new admin defaults and preserves user
values when a default is unset. Verify that Emby saves and loads the
preferences, including zero as no minimum clip length.
Cover trailer metadata, owner recovery, playback context, filename provider
IDs, TVDB mapping, and optional title searches with release-year matching.

Check private trailer lookup without user-scoped library queries, reject
ambiguous or conflicting identities, and guard the compatible item-query API.
Verify authentication and the response format expected by Moonfin.
Check that filename IDs retain their movie or series provider type.
Verify that matching attached trailers must identify one owner and that
the Cinema Mode endpoint requires authentication.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Cinema Mode media resolution for trailers, matching them to movies or series and returning available metadata.
    • Added an optional filename-search fallback for identifying trailers without an attached movie or series.
    • Added admin controls for the filename-search option and Cinema Mode skip countdown, minimum clip duration, and button auto-hide defaults.

Walkthrough

Adds cinema-media resolution for Emby and Jellyfin, including trailer-owner and filename-based metadata matching, authenticated resolution endpoints, and configuration fields for filename search and Cinema Mode skip-button defaults. Adds tests for resolution, endpoint access, settings serialization, and default merging.

Changes

Cinema media resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared media identity resolution
shared/CinemaMediaResolver.Shared.cs, Jellyfin/tests/Moonfin.Server.Tests/CinemaMediaResolverTests.cs, Jellyfin/tests/Moonfin.Server.Tests/FakeLibraryManager.cs, Emby/tests/Emby.Plugins.Moonfin.Tests/CinemaMediaResolverTests.cs, Jellyfin/tests/Moonfin.Server.Tests/CinemaMediaResolverCompatibilityTests.cs
The shared resolver reconciles media types and provider IDs, parses trailer filenames, and performs eligible title searches. Tests cover provider-ID mapping, owner ambiguity, search behavior, and filename parsing.
Emby and Jellyfin resolver integration
Emby/Emby.Plugins.Moonfin/Services/CinemaMediaResolver.cs, Jellyfin/backend/Services/CinemaMediaResolver.cs, Jellyfin/backend/PluginServiceRegistrator.cs, Emby/Emby.Plugins.Moonfin/Emby.Plugins.Moonfin.csproj, Jellyfin/backend/Moonfin.Server.csproj, Emby/Emby.Plugins.Moonfin/Compatibility/IsExternalInit.cs, Jellyfin/tests/Moonfin.Server.Tests/CinemaMediaResolverCompatibilityTests.cs
Each host finds trailer owners and passes resolution inputs to the shared resolver. Jellyfin registers its resolver, and both projects include the shared source. Compatibility tests check the resolution JSON shape and basic resolution cases.
Authenticated resolution endpoints
Emby/Emby.Plugins.Moonfin/Api/CinemaRequests.cs, Emby/Emby.Plugins.Moonfin/Api/CinemaService.cs, Jellyfin/backend/Api/CinemaController.cs, Emby/tests/Emby.Plugins.Moonfin.Tests/CinemaMediaResolverTests.cs, Jellyfin/tests/Moonfin.Server.Tests/CinemaMediaResolverCompatibilityTests.cs
Both hosts add an authenticated GET /Moonfin/Cinema/ResolveMedia endpoint. They validate item IDs and media types, use an eight-second timeout, and return resolved or unresolved media values. Jellyfin propagates caller cancellation; Emby returns an unresolved result when resolution throws.
Cinema Mode settings and defaults
Emby/Emby.Plugins.Moonfin/Models/MoonfinSettingsProfile.cs, Emby/Emby.Plugins.Moonfin/PluginConfiguration.cs, Emby/Emby.Plugins.Moonfin/Pages/configPage.html, Emby/Emby.Plugins.Moonfin/Pages/moonfin.js, Jellyfin/backend/Models/MoonfinSettingsProfile.cs, Jellyfin/backend/PluginConfiguration.cs, Jellyfin/backend/Pages/configPage.html, Emby/tests/Emby.Plugins.Moonfin.Tests/MoonfinUserSettingsTests.cs, Jellyfin/tests/Moonfin.Server.Tests/AdminDefaultsMergeTests.cs
Both admin pages configure filename search and load and save the skip countdown, minimum clip duration, and auto-hide defaults. Settings profiles serialize the new fields. Tests cover zero and unset values and admin-default merging.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c69b1

Emby trailer identification may respond slowly when a metadata provider ignores cancellation. This is a bounded merge risk that should be fixed or explicitly accepted.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to c69b1

The new Jellyfin endpoint authenticates callers but does not carry their identity into media lookup or explicitly check library visibility. Restricted users may therefore receive identifiers for inaccessible media. The response is limited to media identifiers and type, while Emby explicitly checks visibility. Actual Jellyfin exposure remains dependent on host behavior that was not verified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new Jellyfin resolution flow authenticates a user but does not preserve that user's library-access boundary through item and owner discovery. An authenticated caller with an obtainable item ID may receive TMDB identity and media type for inaccessible content if host lookups return globally addressable objects. Authentication, type checks, and owner-ambiguity rejection do not establish item authorization.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The potential authorization exposure is bounded to metadata associations on one Jellyfin server. A normal authenticated caller needs an obtainable item ID; owner traversal could cross that user's permitted libraries. The inspected response exposes TMDB identity and media type, not media bytes, credentials, or administrative privileges.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A restricted authenticated caller could supply an inaccessible video's ID, or a trailer ID whose owner is inaccessible, and receive its resolved identity if host lookups are unfiltered. This is a supported authorization concern, not a verified disclosure. GUID validation, authentication, and ambiguity checks constrain the path but do not authorize the selected asset.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Existing Jellyfin library-facing code applies caller identity to queries and separately checks visibility, failing closed when compatibility bindings cannot enforce it. The new Cinema adapter does not use this established control pattern. Emby's explicit visibility checks provide additional counterevidence against treating the shared resolver itself as the authorization boundary.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The new settings use existing state ownership and persistence paths. Jellyfin default merges clone values per user, serialize saves under a lock, skip null incoming values, and retain numeric zero. Bulk merging catches individual failures rather than providing all-user atomicity; file writes retain existing backup recovery. These mechanisms predate the PR, and no new state-lifecycle concern was established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make caller-scoped item and owner visibility an explicit Jellyfin resolver contract, including same-path candidates and normalized series owners. Validate restricted-library behavior through the hosted route. Separately, consider an Emby completion boundary that does not depend solely on provider cancellation cooperation.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Emby's AwaitSearch ignores the 8-second timeout.

The Jellyfin version uses search.WaitAsync(cancellationToken). The Emby version returns the provider task as-is. If the TMDB provider ignores the token, the Emby request waits as long as the provider takes, and the 8-second limit in CinemaService has no effect. Task.WaitAsync doesn't exist on netstandard2.1, so you need a small polyfill with Task.WhenAny.
