Receive E1.31 multicast, and number E1.31 from universe 1 - #232
Network Receive now joins the E1.31 multicast group of every universe its layer covers, so an sACN sender that multicasts reaches it, and the card says which universes only unicast reaches. ESP32 boards on built-in Ethernet now receive every joined group, and E1.31 numbers its universes from 1 when universe_start is 0, as xLights and FPP do. Fixes#216.
What changed
Platform: a socket holds a set of multicast groups, re-joins one group per read while silent, and leaves its groups by name on close. On the ESP32's built-in Ethernet MAC (8 filter slots), all-multicast is on only while the held groups exceed the free slots.
Network Receive: joins up to 64 universe groups, names in its status what multicast reaches, and reads on a timeout so a silent socket keeps its groups.
E1.31 numbering: starts at universe 1 for universe_start 0, on both ends (MIGRATING v7.1.0).
Process: CLAUDE.md becomes the index of the MoonWalk processes, with a generated table of the stage files that check_docgen keeps fresh.
Friend repos: the October 2026 digests.
Tested
Desktop: 2897 unit tests and 672 Python tests pass; the commit gates pass.
Builds: the P4, classic ESP32, S3 N16R8 and Teensy firmwares compile.
Hardware: scenario_NetworkSend_one_sender_many_receivers with a P4 sender and the desktop and a wired P4 as receivers. On the wired P4 receiving 97 universes: 16 joined universes, 519 packets/s, 0 lost, where it was 2 universes before. With only the hardware filter in use, an unjoined 3100 packets/s flood costs nothing.

**Core**
- UdpSocket holds a set of multicast groups (setMulticastGroups); joinMulticast takes the group's 4 bytes as the set of one, so Devices, Audio sync and OSC drop their string formatting.
- A silent socket joins its groups again one group per read, and a socket leaves its groups by name before it closes.
- ESP32: the built-in Ethernet MAC filters multicast in 8 address slots, so it passes all multicast only while MoonLight's sockets hold more groups than the slots left (3, measured on a P4); below that the filter drops unwanted multicast in hardware.
**Light domain**
- Network Receive joins the E1.31 group of each universe its layer covers, up to 64, and its status names the universes multicast reaches; universe_start re-prepares, and the receive task reads on a timeout so a silent socket keeps its groups. Fixes#216.
- E1.31 numbers its universes from 1 when universe_start is 0, in Network Send and Network Receive alike (e131FirstUniverse); Art-Net keeps 0.
**Scripts/MoonDeck**
- gen_moonwalk --claude-md generates CLAUDE.md's table of the stage files from their summaries, and check_docgen fails on a stale table.
**Tests**
- Multicast groups per layer, groups moving with a live universe_start, the multicast note, the warning when joins fail, a real multicast round trip, the re-join pacing per read and on a timeout, E1.31 numbering on both ends.
- Host tests keep multicast off the host's network: setTestJoin (network, succeed, fail) replaces setTestJoinFails, and every case starts on succeed.
- FrozenClock keeps the time it starts at.
**Docs/CI**
- Architecture, multicast section: the receive side, the membership caps, the ESP32 MAC's slots and the fallback.
- MIGRATING v7.1.0: E1.31 numbering; the MatrixPortal entry moves there from v7.0.0, whose release it is not in.
- CLAUDE.md: the processes are the one home of their rules and CLAUDE.md the index; the failure rule lives in the commit process, where a failure with a clear fix is fixed and only its check reruns; a pointer to the stage files and their table.
- Friend repos: the October 2026 digests for all eleven repos, the index split into a section per month with October's trends and candidates and a decision rule for candidates, British spellings and a mislabeled link fixed.
- Comments in the touched files to one line per paragraph (docgen warnings 2027 to 2007); help.json regenerated; moonlive.md links issue #221 by number; the backlog mirror regenerated.
**Reviews**
- Destructor read the freed group list on ESP32 and Teensy: done, the destructor closes the sockets first.
- Timeout re-join unpinned: done, a test pins it.
- Silence per socket masks one lost group among streaming ones: accepted, documented; a per-group check needs each datagram's destination address.
- Two formulas for the universes a layer covers: done, universesCovered.
- Multicast note frozen at prepare: done, refreshed each second; joined count atomic.
- ESP32 MAC mode recorded before the switch succeeded, int counters: done, recorded on success, uint8_t.
- "16 sockets' worth" wording: done, "16 memberships in all", with the consequence for later services.
- "no longer" in the digests: accepted, the prose check passes and a digest narrates another project's changes.

AudioService now analyzes microphone input with a fractional-octave filter bank and provides 16- and 31-band data to audio effects. The changes also update multicast socket handling and E1.31 universe mapping, add a waterfall effect, and revise MoonWalk tooling and documentation.
The FFT-based analysis path is replaced by block-based third-octave analysis and dynamics processing. AudioService supports worker-task processing, a 24 kHz default, a 48 kHz option, codec gain, squelch, and 16- and 31-band frame data. Tests cover filter response, dynamics, level conversion, and frame delivery.
AudioSpectrumEffect supports 16- and third-octave-band displays with optional readouts. WaterfallEffect adds a scrolling 2D visualization. Codec initialization accepts configurable input gain.

UDP sockets accept IPv4 address bytes and track multiple multicast groups. Platform implementations leave tracked groups on close; ESP32 Ethernet updates its multicast filter mode based on held memberships.
E1.31 maps a configured start of zero to universe one. Network Receive joins groups for covered universes, reports incomplete coverage, and maps received universes to layer offsets. Tests cover multicast joins, retry behavior, packet delivery, and universe mapping.

Explanation
The title "Receive E1.31 multicast, and number E1.31 from universe 1" matches two of the main changes in the changeset: Network Receive now joins E1.31 multicast groups for covered universes, and E1.31 numbering starts at universe 1 when universe_start is 0. The title does not mention the large audio filter-bank and dynamics work, but the PR objectives describe that work as separate from the E1.31 changes, so the title does not need to cover it. The title is specific and clear.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the main changes (multicast join for E1.31 groups, ESP32 Ethernet filter handling, E1.31 numbering from universe 1, MoonWalk process docs, friend-repo digests), links the fixed issue (#216), and reports validation. It follows the template's intent with a summary, what changed, and testing sections. It does not follow the template's exact headings: it lacks the 'What an agent wrote' section and the template's topic and limits line, and it does not state the contribute-pr checks. Those gaps are non-critical, so the check passes.

Clarify whether the eligibility conditions apply to both routes.
The sentence at line 17 gives two routes for a candidate: attach it to existing work, or create a backlog card. It then states that the textbook-answer, architecture, and interest conditions apply. It does not say whether those conditions govern attaching to existing work, creating a backlog card, or both. A digest run can apply the rule differently on each route.
Confirm the intended scope. Then state the rule once, and keep all existing conditions in it. Do not add conditions that are not already in the sentence.

Add tests for the stage-table check.
The new stage-table behavior has no pinning test. with_stage_table in moondeck/docs/gen_moonwalk.py:689 and _stage_table_freshness in moondeck/check/check_docgen.py:1169 are not referenced by any test in the repository. CLAUDE.md principle 4 requires that every behavior is pinned by tests whose descriptions read as functional documentation.
Add tests that cover these three outcomes:
A fresh table produces no finding.
A stale table produces a CLAUDE.md finding that names the uv run moondeck/docs/gen_moonwalk.py --claude-md command.
Missing markers produce a CLAUDE.md finding that reports the missing markers.

Serialize the EMAC mode switch so an interleaved join or leave cannot leave the MAC filtered.
When a leave and a join interleave across tasks, the MAC can stay in filtered mode while four or more groups are held. Later joins and leaves that keep the count above three do not retry the switch, because the compare-exchange in ethFitMulticastFilter() finds the stored mode already matches. The MAC recovers only when the count drops to three and rises again, or when the Ethernet driver is reinstalled. Groups beyond the three free slots stay undelivered until then.
Hold a mutex across the compare-exchange and the ioctl, so each switch completes before the next one reads the mode:
Suggested fix
static std::atomic<bool> ethAllMulticast_{false}; // the mode the MAC reached
+static std::mutex ethMulticastMutex_; // serializes each mode switch with its ioctl
// Put the MAC in the mode the held groups need; a socket's join or leave calls it, and a switch that failed is tried again on the next.
static void ethFitMulticastFilter() {
+ std::lock_guard<std::mutex> lock(ethMulticastMutex_);
if (!ethEmacHandle_) return;

joinMulticast overwrites own_ before it leaves the earlier group.
setMulticastGroups leaves the earlier set by reading groups_[i].ip. After a first joinMulticast, groups_ points to own_. The next joinMulticast call writes the new address into own_ first, so the leave loop targets the new address.
The old group is never left, so the socket keeps its membership.
The leave of the never-joined new address fails.
On ESP32 EMAC builds, ethHeldGroups_ stays too high.
This breaks the documented contract of setMulticastGroups: "leaving the earlier one". Current callers (AudioService, OscService, DevicesModule) call it once after open(), so no caller triggers it today. Fix it so a reused socket stays correct.

The audio now measures the 31 third-octave bands an analyzer shows, each through its own filter, so the bass separates note from note and every band updates every frame; the sixteen bars WLED draws are picked from them, and audio sync stays as it was. A new Waterfall effect scrolls the spectrum down the grid, Audio Spectrum draws 31 bars or 16, the codec's input gain is a setting so line-in no longer clips, and a slow board's microphone no longer drops samples.

- AudioBands: the sixteen bands are picked from the 31 as WLED-MM's default GEQ pattern picks them, the conditioner runs over all 31, and peakHz is the loudest band refined by parabolic interpolation; the loudest-bin estimator, the band edges and the Hann window go.
- AudioService: the bank fed 64 samples at a time; the input drained every tick, a block analyzed each time one fills (up to four a tick), so a slow frame rate no longer overflows the driver; internal RAM (InternalRamObject), measured 30% cheaper on the classic ESP32's quad PSRAM; 48 kHz added and the default; a sample-rate change resets the bank, both conditioners and the block fill; the DC blocker's corner at 5 Hz at any rate; a `cpu` readout of the bands' and the read's share of a core and the input's real rate; `codecGain`, the codec's analog input gain (30 dB microphone, 0 dB line-in).
- AudioFrame carries the 31 bands and how many this frame measured (0 from audio sync).
- Platform: the audioFft seam goes on both platforms with the esp-dsp dependency and the P4's DSP fallback note; audioCodecInit takes the gain; the ESP32 PDM read stages until the driver is drained.
- Measured with the 31 bands at 48 kHz: 6% of a P4 core (470 FPS), 16% of an S3's (344 FPS, the FFT release ran 320); the classic ESP32 at 22,050 Hz 12% (85 FPS), at 48 kHz 25%.
**Light domain**
- AudioSpectrumEffect draws the 31 bands or the sixteen (`bands`), its level bar as tall as a bar is wide at either count.
- WaterfallEffect, new: the spectrogram scrolling down the grid, one column per band, carrying the fraction of a step so a row is the same time at any frame rate.
**UI**
- The Olimex ESP32-P4-PC device model sets codecGain 0, its only input being the headset jack.
**Tests**
- The bank: ISO 266 centers, band counts per rate, a tone at each center reads its own power with the neighbors 16 dB down (11.5 in the top octave), 50 Hz and 60 Hz apart, pink noise flat within 1 dB, equal decay from 250 Hz up, click delays per band, chunks of 1, 7 and 512 read the same, 8 kHz, the semitone layout.
- The bands from the bank, the peak between band centers, the WLED-MM centers; the 31-bar spectrum and its level bar; the waterfall's history; the codec gain; joinMulticast leaving the earlier group.
- bench_kernels gains the bank's cost per sample; the FFT test goes.
**Docs/CI**
- The audio plan rewritten and renamed (0 of 6): step 1 the bank, harmony as step 3, per-band onsets with the kick timed by its click, the beat with the downbeat from chord changes, Anjin's and Troy's measurements, Scheirer, Goto and Faraldo as prior art, the measured costs and delays, the classic's rate as an open question; the live-performance plan points at its new steps.
- Audio input, lessons, small boards, mooncore, moonlive and attributions say the bank; issues-in-other-projects keeps esp-dsp on record, unused; help.json regenerated; the Waterfall card.

Update the stale cost sentence in the @technical appendix.
Line 50 says the state is thirty-two floats and the work is sixteen logarithms per block. This change grew BandConditioner to kMaxBands = 31. It now holds 62 floats, and bankToBands computes up to 31 logarithms per block. The sentence now describes code that no longer exists.
Correct the counts in this change, which is the one that opened the file.

A network can also forget one member while others keep hearing. A router that snoops can stop forwarding a group to a station it has not heard from, which stops a stream on that one board. So a socket that joined a group and hears nothing for 3 seconds joins again, at most every 3 seconds, which re-announces the membership. Every multicast receiver gets it from the platform socket: audio, OSC, discovery and Network Receive, which re-joins a large set one group per read so no read pays for all of it.
An E1.31 receiver joins one group per universe, so a large layer asks for many. The network stack caps memberships: 16 in all on the ESP32 and 8 groups on the Teensy, shared by every socket, and Network Receive's card names the universes multicast reaches and leaves the rest to unicast. A layer that takes the whole table leaves none for a service joining later, so audio sync or OSC feedback then says unicast only on its own card. The ESP32's built-in Ethernet MAC adds a narrower limit: it filters multicast in 8 address slots, which the stack's own groups mostly fill, and a group past them is joined yet never delivered. So while the sockets hold more groups than the slots left, the platform switches the MAC to pass all multicast and lwIP keeps the joined groups, as a driver falls back to all-multicast once its filter overflows; below that the filter drops unwanted multicast in hardware, which on a LAN carrying a large sACN show is the difference between a third of a P4's frame rate and none. The W5500 has no per-address filter and passes all IPv4 multicast once a group is joined, and the Teensy's MAC filters by hash, so neither has the slot limit.
Move the ESP32 EMAC detail to its owner and shorten this section.
Line 289 restates the EMAC filter mechanism. The same text already sits in the @technical section "The internal MAC passes all multicast once its filter overflows" in src/platform/esp32/platform_esp32.cpp. The page now carries a second copy that can drift.
The "Multicast and IGMP snooping" section was already close to the 500-word prose limit. These two paragraphs add about 300 words. The check_prose rule MoonLight.SectionLength ratchets that count.
Line 289 also has several sentences that carry more than one thought. For example, the sentence beginning "So while the sockets hold more groups…" ends with a P4 frame-rate remark. The paragraph uses bare negations such as "has no per-address filter" and "neither has the slot limit".
Keep the user-facing facts on the page:
Group limits are shared by all sockets.
Network Receive's card names the universes that only unicast reaches.
A layer that takes the whole table leaves none for a service that joins later.
Link to the header's @technical section for the EMAC mechanism.
As per coding guidelines: "A page links down to detail, it does not absorb it… A fact stated above its home is a second copy that drifts." Also: "A section stays within 500 words of prose" and "A sentence is one thought."

One fork commit, on a new branch cut from our `main` late in the month.
- **An optional BLE control transport** (`codex/moonlight-ble-transport`, 2026-10-25, 399 added lines across ten files): an encrypted control channel for a controller outside WiFi range. A native NimBLE peripheral with GATT attributes for identity, state and commands, pairing with persistent bonds, a bounded 512-byte line reassembler with backpressure and recovery after rejected input, and a non-blocking exchange with the scheduler. The caller owns startup, identity and request dispatch; desktop, Teensy and BLE-disabled ESP32 builds share one stub, and shipping firmware defaults are unchanged. The commit message says the hardware test ran on the HELIO prototype before the transport was extracted, and that Codex wrote the contribution at the author's request. It was offered to this project the same evening as [MoonModules/MoonLight#158](https://github.com/MoonModules/MoonLight/pull/158), open at month end.
This bullet combines transport behavior, platform details, hardware provenance, authorship, and pull-request status. Separate the user-facing feature summary from proposal status and use one topic per bullet.
As per coding guidelines, “A list holds one kind of thing” and “Say it, then stop: about 30 words.” The reusable digest prompt also requires short bullet points.

Only real issues, not PRs. The commit log shows what shipped; the issues show what users *hit* and what the maintainers are prioritising, the two together are the real activity picture. Skim: notable bugs opened (recurring pain points, hardware quirks), fixes closed that map to a commit, and any heavily-discussed feature request or design thread. Fold the user-facing ones into the summary below (a widely-reported bug that got fixed, a feature the community is pushing for); an issue with no user-facing outcome yet is still worth a one-line "watching:" note if it signals a direction. Don't list every issue, surface the few that matter, the same bar as the commit summary.

If the tag is NOT an ancestor (the project cuts releases from a separate release branch, e.g. upstream WLED tags off `0_15`/release branches, not `main`), do NOT split: keep the month whole and just note which release shipped that month as context, since the trunk you're summarising feeds future releases rather than being the release line. Whole months with no in-branch release stay one section.

No activity on `mdev`: the branch tip is still the 2026-08-24 merge of `MoonModules:mdev`, so there are 0 commits in the window. No versioned release was published, so the month is kept whole.
- **Experimental branches:** `troy/hdmi-on-p4-experimental` is the only branch that moved, and it moved a lot: 69 commits between 2026-10-02 and 2026-10-30 (36 files, about 14,000 lines added), nearly all of them a rework of the audio-reactive usermod on the ESP32-P4 HDMI board. The FFT is out of the measurement: 31 ISO third-octave bands are now read from two biquad filter banks (8 low bands at 3 kHz, 23 at 48 kHz), the 16 bars the effects read are 16 of those 31, which 16 is a live setting with seven patterns (from "Sub Sub - 20Hz" to "Mid Bass - 80Hz"), and the AGC and the "target pink" curve give way to a latched loudest-band reference and a once-measured input-chain calibration, checked bar for bar against a hardware RTA (white noise rises, pink reads flat). The GEQ PPA effect gains an "RTA Mode" checkbox that draws all 31 bars, every effect that reads the bands now snapshots them first (readers could see the frame change under them), the ES8311 codec's line input drops from +30 dB to 0 dB analog gain (it was overloading the ADC), and the codec input gain becomes a live setting on the ES8311 and ES8388. Two hang fixes: the analysis task parks itself at a safe point instead of being suspended while holding the publish lock, and one shared I2C bus now serves the codec, the HDMI bridge and the touch controller (under the IDF v5 driver the second bus installed on a pin pair silently took the pins from the first, so codec writes NACKed forever). HDMI: a tearing fix, and after a link timeout the display stack is torn down and rebuilt instead of re-initialized, so a missing or slow monitor no longer panics the board. P4: the USB-Serial-JTAG peripheral is handed from the IDF to the Arduino HWCDC (ending a reset loop under console traffic), and a reset on serial disconnect on combined Serial+JTAG boards is fixed. Started but not working: a `usermod_v3_deck` usermod that makes the P4 the USB host for a Soomfon CN003 / Mirabox N4 stream deck (keys, encoders, LCD keys as a WLED control surface), stuck at transport bring-up with commands going out and no input arriving. Also: the Pioneer Pro DJ Link effect (live deck title, artist and waveform) gains auto scaling and fixes, a `tools/verify_ar.py` checker reads `/json/ar` from a running board and checks its invariants, and the simulation scripts move to `tools/ar_sim/`. Many commit messages carry a Claude Code or MiniMax co-author trailer. The branch's 2026-11-01..03 commits (a tempo tracker, LTO back on) fall outside the window.

Take a std::span<const float> in process, not a pointer and length.
process(const float* x, size_t n) is a new public signature with a pointer and length pair. The repository rule asks for a span, which carries the bound so the caller cannot desync it. The !x guard then goes away. push must wrap its single sample in a span.

Move the test helpers into the anonymous namespace.
The anonymous namespace opened at line 13 closes at line 51. The helpers checkTone, pinkMultisine, checkFlat, decayMs, checkDecay, clickDelaysMs, readInChunks, and checkSameRead are defined after that close, so they have external linkage. If another test translation unit in the same test binary defines a function with the same name and parameter list, the link can fail with a duplicate-symbol error. If the definitions differ, the program violates the one-definition rule, and the linker can select either definition without an error.
Move these helpers above line 51, or reopen namespace { before the first helper and close it after the last helper.

The audio now learns the room's noise floor by itself and opens a gate a set squelch above it, so a silent room stays dark and quiet music still fills the bars; the levels and gain controls are gone, and floor is now called squelch. Audio Spectrum shows everything the audio gives an effect: the level meter, the hits, the gate at its right edge and the dominant frequency along its top, all behind one readouts switch, and every coloring follows the selected palette. The default sample rate is 24 kHz, half the cost of 48 kHz with the same sixteen WLED bars.

**Core**
- AudioDynamics, new, pure maths beside the bank: the level (each block's RMS in dBFS); the floor by minimum statistics (Martin 2001), the quietest block of the last 10 to 20 s from two half-window minima, so it follows a room growing noisier by any step and forgets a dip; the bands' own floor, the quietest loudest band; the gate, opening squelch dB over the floor and closing 4 dB lower after 250 ms; the top, following the loudest band with a 20 ms attack and a 3 s release while the level is over the close threshold. Bands and level map through a 40 dB window under the top whose bottom never sinks under the floor.
- Removed: BandConditioner, LevelConditioner, the levels and gain controls, the conditioner's ratio and maximum gain, the two learned tables.
- AudioFrame carries the gate and whether it is open (gate 0: no dynamics measured, as from audio sync or simulation).
- AudioService: one SpscRing of frames for the task and the tick paths, the newest frame taken with the strongest onset kept; the sample rate an enum with 24000 as the default; the block duration fixed when the stream opens rather than read from the live control; an audio task that does not stop keeps the input open (deinit reports it) rather than freeing it under the task; the card's dynamics line shows level, floor, top and gate.
- FractionalOctaveBank::process takes a span.
- Platform: the ESP32 receive channel's 60 ms DMA ring in its own function; the desktop vendoring note to one line.
- NetworkReceiveEffect drains every ready socket and the E1.31 socket on each wake.
- Measured on the boards with this build: P4 3.6% of a core at 24 kHz (6.8% at 48), S3 7.2% (14.4%), classic ESP32 8.4% at 22,050 Hz (19.0% at 48), the cost following the rate since every octave runs at the rate it needs.
**Light domain**
- AudioSpectrumEffect: `readouts` (was levelBar) switches the level meter, the hit square, the gate mark at the right edge (white open, red gated) and the dominant-frequency mark along the top, each a bar wide; off, the bars alone, as GEQ PPA draws them. Every coloring follows the selected palette, sweep included, with a `speed` slider shown only for sweep; a bar's color computed once per bar.
**Tests**
- AudioDynamics: silence keeps the gate shut, music opens it, music shorter than the window leaves the floor alone, the floor follows a 10 dB step and forgets a -129 dB dip, the bands' own floor scales quiet music, hysteresis and hold, a quiet song after a loud one reaches the top, the window narrows near the floor, the top holds while gated, the gate's place on the bands' scale.
- AudioSpectrum: the gate mark, the peak mark and readouts off, palette height and sweep, speed visible only for sweep. AudioService: the strongest onset kept across a dropped frame.
- A palette-rescan test made order-independent; the Drivers container test rescans first; the E1.31 rejoin tests share one helper; FractionalOctaveBank's helpers in the anonymous namespace; stale comments in AudioLevel and ModuleContract tests.
**Docs/CI**
- The audio plan renamed (2 of 6): step 2 done with what was built and removed, its tests, the boards' measurements and the open points (the input's measured rate wanders, the P4 loses a fifth of its FPS at 48 kHz, Hub75 takes 6.2 ms a frame); the audio modifier showcase dropped; the live-performance plan's links follow.
- MIGRATING: levels, gain and floor to squelch; a stored rate comes back one rate lower, and the default is 24000.
- MoonWalk: a squelch step in the advanced stage; gen_moonwalk.py in the commit process's docgen trigger.
- Friend repos (Funkelfetisch, troyhacks), issues-in-other-projects, the architecture's EMAC note and audio-input updated; card and appendix paragraphs cut to one line with xrefs; help.json regenerated.
- Gates: the first round ran everything, the ESP32-S3 n16r8 firmware fresh; the final round after the readouts and marks change ran specs, prose, docgen, backlog, code and docs, and skipped the builds, scenarios, flashes and the Reviewer, the product owner's call.
**Reviews**
- Reviewer: the floor could not follow a noise step over 3 dB (seen on the Waveshare as -129 dB stuck): done, minimum statistics, two regression tests.
- Reviewer: the bands' window stopped at the RMS floor, so quiet music read empty or full: done, the bands' own floor, a test.
- Reviewer: an audio task outliving its stop could read a freed I2S channel: done, deinit frees nothing until the loop has exited.
- Reviewer: AudioSpectrum looked up the per-band color per pixel: done, once per bar; height stays per row, a row table needing a grid-sized buffer.
- Reviewer: MIGRATING had the stored-rate shift backwards: done.
- Reviewer: the audio task read the live rate control for the block duration: done, blockMs_ set when the stream opens.
- Reviewer: three stale comments: done.
- CodeRabbit: a dropped frame lost its onset: done, the strongest onset kept, a test.
- CodeRabbit: sampleRateSel as raw indices: done, an enum.
- CodeRabbit: the cpu readout's percent comment: done.
- CodeRabbit: FractionalOctaveBank::process by pointer and count: done, a span.
- CodeRabbit: Waterfall drawing more than one row per frame: skipped, the rows are its time axis by design.
- CodeRabbit: BandConditioner's span, the AudioBands cost sentence, AudioLevel's bin wording, magToByte: no change needed, all removed in this change.
- CodeRabbit: the EMAC doc, the Funkelfetisch and troyhacks bullets, the committer date, positive present tense with #19025, the gen_moonwalk trigger, the E1.31 rejoin with a test, FractionalOctaveBank's helpers: done.
- CodeRabbit: TEST_CASEs inside namespace mm: skipped, the tests name mm:: as the rest of the suite does.
- check_code: reinit's complexity, audioMicInit's length, syncEnsureSocket's nesting, two duplicated test blocks: done, extracted.
- check_docgen: the readouts control line over 80 characters: done.

Reset the sample rate to the actual default, "24000", not the index 2.
The reset description says it puts the rate back to its default. This PR changes the default to kRate24000, which is index 3. Index 2 is 22050. The main steps already use labels ("22050", "24000"), because the control now persists by label. After this reset runs, the device stays at 22050 Hz, and a later scenario inherits that rate as if a user had chosen it. The step name reset-audio-gain at line 132 is also out of date, because the step now writes squelch.

The defining line is the **data relationship, not the connector**: *does the module consume the light output buffer?* If yes it's a **driver** (ArtNet, DMX, SPI-LED all consume the buffer, differing only in transport; a DMX sender uses a UART/RS-485 transport but is a driver because it sends the rendered buffer). If no, it's a **service**.
Services are **user-add/deletable children of the `Services` container**, the core-domain twin of the light pipeline's `Effects`/`Drivers`: a top-level container holding user-added children of one role. The firmware is identical whether or not the hardware is wired. The user adds the module when they solder a gyro on and removes it later, reusing the generic child add, replace, delete and persistence machinery; `Services` declares `acceptsChildRoles("service")`. Fixed device infrastructure lives under **System** instead, wired by code rather than user-added: identity, network, the inspection tool Tasks, and the board's I2C bus. That is the System/Services split. Direction is per-module, not a role: a service may read (gyro), write (relay), or both, so one `Service` role spans the category. Each is a header-only or `.h`+`.cpp` core module under `src/core/`, reaches hardware only through a domain-neutral platform primitive (`platform::i2c*`, `platform::audioMic*`, …), and gets a spec in `docs/moonmodules/core/services.md` (enforced by `check_specs.py`). Most poll in `tick20ms` or `tick1s`. The exception is a service whose data an effect consumes *every frame*: [AudioService](../../moonmodules/core/services.md#audio) reads and analyzes its I²S microphone in `tick()`, because the audio effects react per render tick. Its per-tick cost, one FFT, is part of the render budget.

Update the AudioService exception: the analysis now runs on its own task.
The line still says AudioService "reads and analyzes its I²S microphone in tick()" and that the filter bank "is part of the render budget". This PR moves the read and the analysis onto mmAudio through startAudioTask(). That task is pinned to core 1 at priority 6. The render tick() now only drains the SpscRing. Analysis stays in tick() only on a board without tasks. The repository rule states that "a doc describing what the code no longer does is a defect. Fix it in the change that opened the file." This change edited this exact sentence.
📝 Proposed wording
-The exception is a service whose data an effect consumes *every frame*: [AudioService](../../moonmodules/core/services.md#audio) reads and analyzes its I²S microphone in `tick()`, because the audio effects react per render tick. Its per-tick cost, the filter bank, is part of the render budget.+The exception is a service whose data an effect consumes *every frame*: [AudioService](../../moonmodules/core/services.md#audio) reads and analyzes its microphone on an audio task of its own, and `tick()` hands the newest frame to the effects. A board without tasks runs the filter bank in `tick()`, inside the render budget.
As per coding guidelines: "Continuous improvement: a doc describing what the code no longer does is a defect. Fix it in the change that opened the file, not in a sweep."

The rewrite's heaviest month so far: 37 commits on `main` between 2026-10-11 and 2026-10-31, all by the maintainer. The language gains `switch`, a fixed-point type written like a float, working bounds checks and task control; a differential fuzzer that runs random programs under QEMU and as C finds a run of compiler bugs; and three register-allocation passes bring an ESP32 Game of Life frame from 15.2 ms to 8.1 ms against 6.0 ms native.

Define how the digest reads multiple branches.
The introduction allows the digest branch to be "the branch or branches" named in the Branch note. Step 1 still reads "the digest branch" with one git log command, and step 2 refers to "the branch you're summarizing." A run that follows step 1 literally can cover only one branch.
Specify whether step 1 repeats for each named branch. Then specify whether each branch is reported separately, as the Funkelfetisch and troyhacks entries do, or combined. If the counts are combined, state that a commit that appears on more than one branch is counted once. Step 6 should list the commit range for each branch.

A fuller month on `main` than September: three new 2D effects and a palette, a rework of segment transitions, the audio-reactive usermod moved onto the V5 framework with a new background ADC manager, fixes for 2D effects on large HUB75 panels, a security fix, flash-size trims, and another round of contributor and agent guideline edits. No versioned release was published in October (v16.0.1, 2026-07-07, is still the latest, cut from a release branch), so the month is not split, and nightly builds stay intentionally off while `main` migrates frameworks (#5880).
Line 9 combines feature work, framework migration, security fixes, footprint changes, release status, and nightly-build status. Split the summary into focused bullets or short sentences.
As per coding guidelines, prose should say it, then stop at about 30 words.

Shorten the October lead in the `main` summary to about 30 words, focusing on
the month’s key changes. Move release status, nightly-build status, and other
details into separate short sentences or bullets rather than combining them in
the lead.

Add the stage-table rule to _RULE_NAMES.
_rule_name() does not match this finding to a _RULE_NAMES entry. It returns CLAUDE.md. The findings record then holds an error whose rule has no entry in its rules table. Add _STALE_STAGE_TABLE_RULE to the tuple so the rule keeps its own name and label.

Size the columns by thirdsCount, not a fixed 31.
n is always 31 when the frame carries third octaves. At the new default rate of 24 kHz, bankToBands measures 28 bands, so thirds[28..30] is always 0. On that rate, the right tenth of the grid is permanently dark. AudioSpectrumEffect already uses f->thirdsCount as its bar count, so the two effects disagree on the same frame. The unit test does not catch this, because simulated music reports thirdsCount = 31.

f->thirdsCount instead of a fixed 31, while preserving the existing 16-column

Remove the reference to the removed floor control.
The changed lead says a quiet signal "is a WINDOW problem, set with the floor control". This PR removes floor, gain and levels and replaces them with squelch and the learned dynamics window (see MIGRATING.md). Because no floor control exists, the comment sends a reader to a setting they cannot find. The guidelines treat a doc that describes removed behavior as a defect.

Update the ESP32 I2S gain explanation to remove the reference to the obsolete
floor control and clarify that the learned dynamics window adapts to the signal,
so quiet input does not need boosting. Preserve the warning that excessive gain
can trigger onset detection in a silent room.

Check the receiver’s join before requiring multicast delivery.
A successful sendToAddr does not establish that r.fx joined the group. If membership fails but the host accepts the send, CHECK(landed) fails even though the test cannot receive that multicast packet. Check the receiver’s joined count and skip the delivery assertion when the join is unavailable; retain the assertion when the join succeeds. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
